Last night, my boyfriend and I went to Hy-Vee to buy some Coca Cola and cherry syrup to make Cherry Cokes at home. Anyway, we searched the store for some cherry syrup and couldn't find it. We then went into the "wine and spirits" section where we found Rose's Grenadine, which you ought to know has absolutely no alcohol. While we were checking out, the grenadine wouldn't ring up without a managers approval. We waited patiently for said manager and when he arrived, he asked to see an I.D. I asked him, "Why do you need to see an I.D.?" He said, "It comes from the wine and spirits section, so you have to be 21 or older to purchase it." I said, "That's ridiculous, grenadine is alcohol-free." He then repeated that it came from the alcohol section. It was ridiculous and made our trip pointless. They had no problem ringing up our Coke which came from the wine and spirits room as well.

I think it's really stupid that I couldn't buy something simply because it was (unfortunately) placed NEAR alcohol. There were bottles of Coke and newspapers in that room as well, do you have to be 21 to buy those? No.

After we were rung up, we searched the main part of the store for a similar syrup and couldn't find one. Thanks, Hy-Vee. You suck.

Yes, I agree that it is ridiculous. However, I really must tell you that is not HyVee's fault. I used to work at a different grocery store chain and we had the same policy-we wouldn't sell Clamato, a tomato juice commonly mixed with beer, although alcohol-free, to minors. Same policy with grenadine. I think it has more to do with state law than store policy. So while it is a stupid policy, it's not just HyVee. It's like that everywhere.

Hy Vee is full of stupid employees, and right there is the problem. Policy does not override law. Hy Vee's manager's know this and should do whats right for the customer. It is the first thing they teach you in business college, and why Hy Vee has the policy, the customer is always right! I went to Hy Vee, told them about cheap ink they were using on prescription bottles, that was rubbing off. This is a problem when it rubs off six to seven days after picking up meds, on certain controlled substances medications. They said they marked my file to put tape over the bottle from here on out, so if ever stopped by police, I could always prove the meds were mine. I was stopped by police after a second time this happened. When I went to complain to a manager and pharmacy manager, they called me a criminal, said I was threatening them, when I was pointing out a possible risk to their customers only. Hy Vee openly admitted it is their cheaper ink, to save them money, they know is at fault, yet al most had me arrested for addressing a concern with a store manager, just because no one else has yet complained. That is Hy Vee for you !This was in Des Moines IA, Park Ave store, manager- Rusty.

I agree with the assessment that hy vee is full of liars and cheats. It's hard for a person that grew up before the Reagan years to see this happen to our country. At one time I was an avid hy vee shopper. Due to incompetence in the store employees at each location I no longer shop there. When I took pictures of green meat in their meat cooler I was asked to leave the store. All we can do as consumers is boycott the establishments that mistreat us. It would be nice if there was an agency that would represent us, but there isn't. I've tried all the consumer protection agencies to no avail. They will take your complaint and your proof it's illegal and side with the corporation in the end regardless. All we can do is let them know we won't shop there anymore.
