I recently received a call from Bradley Evans and his supervisor, Melissa, from Southern Magazine Promotions. When I answered the phone, they said that I had been entered into a drawing by one of my credit card companies and that I won a free vacation and three magazines subscriptions. The only thing was that I had to pay for the fourth one. By the end of the phone call, I had signed up for six magazines and was paying $50 a month for 20 months. Of course I didn't do the math and was caught off guard. When I hung up the phone, I had realized that I just signed up for a $1000.00 magazine subscription. I called them back from my caller ID and said that I wanted to cancel the order that I just put in. Melissa told me that I couldn't and she would take a year off. So, I looked up their name on Google and found a link with a letter describing a similar situation listed on your website. I was able to get the whole canceled through the pushiness of my father.
I just wanted to add a complaint to let people know that they are out there again, and preying on anyone they get a hold of. They are fast talkers and will tell anything you want to hear, and then ask for a credit card number. I was gullible to fall for it, so I wanted to try help warn other consumers.
Beware!
I am so tired of people calling about this crap. I didn't sign up they took advantage of my mentally disabled mother and she signed me up now I have these idiots charging my bank account $99.32 as of 8/4/2009 and then 8/29/2009.
I got sucked up as well. I am in construction, so I am forced to answer my phone if anyone calls -- part of the job. I was in the middle of a big job and my phone rang, all I could really understand was the vacation part and verification through my credit card. Oh, and 6 FREE magazines. Well, the second call came, I talked to them and verified that it was me and used my credit card as verification(I have had to do that before, but they charged a $1 verification to my acc. and then refunded...) and next thing you know I get charged 49.92. I have been trying to get ahold of them, but magically I cannot. I have not received any magazines, been charged six times I think, and the manager only works 2 hours a day so I can't get ahold of him/her very easily. My next step will be to file fraud against the company. I have received NOTHING, not even a magazine or vacation or anything. So here I am, $300 down to them, and I have nothing to show for it.
SMP, I am going to take you down if you don't stop this bull.
i just got a call from the same company i think. they told me my name has been drawn to be entered into a $1, 000, 000 sweepstakes and because i was entered i also automatically won a free lady's or men's diamond quarts watch. i will also get 6 magazines and only have to pay for one with will be $4.60/week and that was required to be entered in the sweepstakes and to get the watch as it was a promotional thing. i told them it sounded scetchy and i wanted to think about it. i found this site and it definitly told me what i wanted to know. thank you sooooooo much for speaking up. now i know its all crap and i can tell them where to stick it when the supervisor calls me back.
