Totally agree with ALL internet complaints about this place. GOOGLE STRANDS AND THE OWNER SHIRLEY GORDON! This woman is a MONSTER! Shirley has lost soooo many clients in the last at least 5 years. Shirley is definitely not hard to book an appt with. I have left after nearly a decade. There was no way I could refer over a couple dozen clients to this woman and her to continue to charge the way she does and serve attitude like she does. Adios BYTCHE! She has a serious chip on her shoulders and chooses to break all the rules at her choosing. She doesn't abide by her own price list and then uses hair length as an excuse. On one day she'll classify you as having short broken off hair and charge you one price; then on the next visit she'll say you have long thick hair and dbl or triple charge. Outrageous. I have never experienced such a crazy attitude EVER from a DC area stylist. She seems to have gotten worse since putting a plug in for herself to do Mrs. Obama's hair and that going by the wayside. Who would recommend her for her nasty ways. She's so unpleasant to be so talented. Terrible atmophere because she's so full of herself and stinky.
Shirley and Strands are only saved by the occasional appearance of her sisters who act as receptionists and business people. She cannot keep a stable receptionist because her temper is too hot! Her sisters seems to try to smooth over the damage Shirley does as she looses her clients. She pushes products on clients while criticizing your hair.
Shirley Gordon back bites clients; is snippy with clients about everything from children in the waiting area only for a short amount of time. She can't even greet clients as they enter the salon. There is no client appreciation EVER. She posts and encourages clients to TIP her and she's the owner. This wouldn't be a problem for exceptional service; but she is so stressful she needs to give the clients something other than being so fussy. She seems very sour that clients are not using her for $500 services for coloring, trims, cuts, etc. Her prices are unreasonable and there is no way she is the only talented stylist in the city to choose from. There are other stylists like Carol in Downtown Baltimore; Kim Whitehurst (formerly of Strands)in Silver Spring; Genivive (Shirley's former apprentice) in Silver Spring; there is Lisa (formerly at Strands) at Textures Hair Salon in Silver Spring, Demetrius at Salon Essence on U Street in DC and sooo many more.

great salon...this is not true...you can tell by the "over" negative things said...i love this place and Shirley...very professional
I am a hairstylist in the Washington DC area and I have met Shirley a few times. We both were attending the yearly color conference . Shirley has won many prestigious awards in our industry . Many hairstylists would look up to someone with her talent. I have been in this business for 30 years and I must admit her work is impressive. I was searching for education through Wella and I was surprised when I recognized Shirley on their website. She was listed as one of their top stylists. I knew she was a educator for them but to be listed as a top stylist is amazing because Wella has thousands of educators . With her accomplishments she could command higher prices.
The original complaint is CORRECT. She exploits customers whom she presumes can pay more. I was not impressed with her services at all and her demeanor leaves much to be desired. Will not return nor recommend to anyone.
