I attended a CPR training required by my employer, on August 8, 2023. In a large group setting, the instructor of the CPR class began the class with jokes and playful behavior. As a group, including myself, were under the impression that if he could joke, so could we. He made a comment when demonstrating how to use an AED device. He stated" I am going to treat the device like you do a woman. What's the first thing you do to a woman? You turn her on." This was one of several comments he made that were degrading to women. At one point, he threw a small toy at me and I was not sure if he was playing around with me or mad at me. After he made a statement about "sucking vomit out of his child's throat", I stated that I would too then need first aid because I would also vomit and choke. (I was referring to my weak stomach.) He then screamed at me, in front of the whole room, and shouted "Can you be quiet? I'm sick of you, you have been interrupting me this entire time!" He appeared angry, red in the face and neck stained. The entire atmosphere in the room changed after he lashed out at me. I remained quiet the next 10 to 15 minutes. He then walked over to my table, placed his hands on the table directly in front of me and in a mad tone says "So what? Are you gonna quit? You interrupted me the whole morning!" I stood up, picked up my phone and bag and stated to him that I would not be interrupting him anymore and I walked out.
He is an independent contractor with American CPR Training Center:
John LaVolpa
Certified with: American Heart Association
Trainer ID: [protected]
Direct Email: [protected]@gmail.com
Desired outcome: I would like for him to to be reprimanded on how to speak to trainees without aggression and intimidation tactics. I believe he should be removed as trainer for companies that require CPR certification.
