I replied to a "Craigslist ad for a Personal/Administrative Assistant. Reading it you would have thought the dream job had just dropped from the heavens. Momentarily I got excited, then decided to do a little research. I Googled Angel Investment Network and SCAM came up on about 5 different sites. I was going to respond back and ask for references on this company just to see what he says, and ask to speak with the last PA. Below is the email on craigslist I responded to.

You contacted me applying for the position which I advertised on Craigslist. Do take time to go through this introductory mail and feel free to pass any questions on.

My profile briefly:

I'm Brian Peterson, 52, and a father of 2 wonderful kids, a successful entrepreneur and investor, a member of the Angel Investment Network. I'm also a research journalist and I travel every now and then within and outside the US working on various independent projects, this is why I need someone who can help keep up to date with all of my activities especially when I'm away and amidst my busy schedule.

I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has since moved on with her personal life and it has affected me in a way. I found her previously on the craigslist website and I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been.
Please note that you are being hired only on a personal level. All correspondences would be made and promptly reported to me personally. The position is part time and home-based meaning you can work most times from your home as long as you have a regular internet access. You are also hired on a trial basis for now until we are able to see how well we fit in, this however does not affect your weekly wage.

Most of your activities will be carried out locally and most official packages will be delivered via posts. You will be actively involved in my personal, business and financial life.

In summary, your activities as my assistant amongst other things will include;

* Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence;
* Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring;
* Organizing and maintaining diaries, memos and making appointments;
* Dealing with incoming email, faxes and post;
* Carrying out background research and presenting findings;
* A personal reminder for Schedules, programs, flights and keeping me up to date with them as they come up;
* Arranging travel and accommodation
* Carrying out specific projects and research;
* Taking on some of the my responsibilities and working more closely with management and other staff related to me;
* Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.
* Handling and monitoring financial activities.
* Processing and taking charge of weekly payments and purchases.
* You will also be a part of my household and a helping hand to issues as they arise.
* General clerical activities.

Basic wage is $550 a week.

Any extra personal expenses (transport, gas, etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working week.

This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing, just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I

believe will resolve itself as time goes on.

This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I'm currently in England now for a project, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with immediately, prior to my arrival.

I got a very similar letter as well from a Joel Sutton. Several red flags went up for me as well, and after emailing him saying that I need to know whether this is a credible job and would like to meet in person, he started to act like I didn't trust him. Of course I didn't trust him, I found the job on Craig's list. Below is the email he sent me:

Like i said i do travel a lot and for these reason i trying to get Personal Assistance in some countries to help me handle some of my states affair, (2 days in a week is just fine by me as a part-time job.)And as i may have you know i am not in the country currently.Therefore if you will like to proceed by working for me please let me know only for these did i place my advert on line to find possible candidate on line as well.In less than 2 weeks from now i will be in the states but i do need a PA to help me handle some affairs until i arrive and then we can meet and discuss further, But you will get paid under these few weeks.

I have been checking my files and what i would want you to do for me this week is to run some errands out to some of the orphanage home, I do that every month .The funds will be in form of Cashier's Check or United Postal Money Order and it will be sent over to
you from one of my clients and i have some list to email you once you received the funds, You will make some arrangements by buying some stuff for the kids in the nearest store around you so you can mail them
out...

And my last email from him after saying that I needed a little more proof that this wasn't a scam and an actual job. This told me everything I needed to know:

I don't want hire you to insult me okay and I should be more inquisitive if you will be capable handling my affairs for me but i never did.I need you to trust me and you have to be honest with me.I will call you if i need to and i will make sure i call you okay.You should get back to me with your full name and address with phone number.I will need you to be honest and time conscious working for me and also i expect you to executing every of my instructions according and as i have just considered you as my personal assistance and your first assignment will commence this week of which i will be giving you every instructions on what to do.In the meantime i will like you to stay in touch always and look forward to my email in case of any update as you have some work this week which you might likely receive your first weekly payment from these assignments.

Note:If you decide not to work again please give me a week notice before you get paid. I will appreciate your acceptance mail as my Personal Assistance

I received this same email about a week ago but I actually was applying for a Data Entry position and in turn they stated that the position had been filled but while reviewing my resume they feel I could fulfill the position of personal assistant. I should have done the research that I am now doing because they are requesting to send me a check and big no no for me. I will not cash a check for someone whom I've never met in my life. I am giving this information to craigslist and also to the company they claim to do business with as well as report this to the credit bureau because they have enough information on my resume. Here is the email I received:

ANOTHER ALIAS...John Hill (When something seems too good to be true, it probably is.)
Here is the email I received below...I have been scammed by someone from craigslist before, so some things really stood out that gave me a bad feeling: Spelling/grammar errors, mentioning "cashiers check" or "postal money order" (said to be given to me from one of his clients). He mentioned he used to work for the Angel Investment in Canada and the United States...says he presently owns PNL...?

Hi, I got the same scam. I set up a separate email address to email those "confidential" employers you see in newspaper ads and ones on craigslist and got this back from "Robert Smith"

hello everyone, i too received the same email from James Morgan, I responded to the email and stated that it was a scam and i am going to report him to the local authorities. I received a 20 minute phone call from Mr. Morgan advising me that this was no scam. I saved the message. Why cant they get caught. Why is it so hard to shut these guys down.

Wow, I haven't seen this and I haven't applied for any position with anyone but this sounds like a variation of this scheme. They send you a bogus check with instructions like the ones above "buy something for a kid". You get the check, they assume you have cashed it and it takes a while for the bank to figure out it's bad. In the meantime, they contact you to tell you, they made an error and the funds are needed somewhere else, so will you please return the funds (with your good check made out to them). You figure, well, I do have the funds so what's the big deal? But you don't have the funds, you have a bad check or phony money order. My friend almost got caught in this one - different context, different type of job (she's an artist).

I received this email today and it did not seem legit to me, so I googled the company he claimed to own and found this page. I am glad that I did. I too answered an add on craig's list. Obviously, they have done nothing about the complaints made by you ladies.
Has anyone experienced any problems financially, someone trying to open accounts in your name?
I obviously will not respond to this person, but does he have enough info from my resume to steal identity? Or anything else? I don't know?

Hi all,
Geeeeze, they were offering me only $450/week, now I feel DOUBLY scammed! heh heh.

For mine, the name was David Bellagio, he was age 42, and he ALSO has only 2 kids... he also is heartbroken as the young PA that left him, evidently filled as much of his fantasy world as this scam does.

Did anyone go back in to craigslist and report the scam? I live in a ski resort, chock full of rich people, so I didn't think to check other regions (which I just did, via Google, to find "him" in about 8 different regions).

I too applied for a Personal Assistant job on Craigslist and was surprised with such an immediate and enthusiastic response from a man named Ben Cruise. He had the usual profile and I have been corresponding with him through email with him for a couple of weeks as he claims he is in Italy. I keep asking him when he is coming back, when we will meet and when I can start work for him. When he said he was sending me $500 in the mail for me to buy things for an orphanage in my hometown, I became a little suspicious. Then, today, he made a mistake. He signed his last email "Steven C." instead of "Ben" like he normally does. I am now convinced I have been duped. Although I haven't ever given him any information besides my phone number, email address, and physical address, I am worried now. What exactly can he do with those besides send me mail, email, and call my phone?

Although I am desperate for a job, as I am unemployed, I felt uneasy as I read the email. I immediately start googling. So, guys pay attention to that tiny small voice, intuition, or whatever you want to call it, it's usually right.

Process rental applications in Resident Data.
Type various letters, Prepare 3 Day Notices.
Retrieve and process faxes
Send unpaid rent notifications to tenants.
Deposit and monitor payments of all owner contributions

YOUR DUTIES AS MY NEW ASSISTANT ; While I am out of the states, I need some one who can stand in the gap for me. Addditional duties will be: To receive letters and mails on my behalf. Receive checks and money orders from clients who want to attend the forth Coming workshops or Live shows . Schedule appointments for me. Book my flight tickets. Send letters and mails from my clients. This position is home-based and flexible part time job, you can be in any location you will be working from your home doing all the activities.All you need do is to check your emails twice daily and keep your phone on most times in case I might need to call you from anywhere I may be . Apparently after all this time these scammers are switching it up! I got a reply from a resume I sent out via craiglist but my reply came from a woman named Ebony Valesquez- and the email was practically verbatim to everyone elses!
