Date : August 4th 2021 @ 2:00 PM
Store : Canadian Tire Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, QC J8C 2V6
Name of employee involved: JUSTINE (female & cashier at check out) in her early 20s.
Incident: My wife (late 50s) and I (early 60's) approached the cashier check out at Canadian Tire in Ste-Agathe to pay for products we wanted to purchase and JUSTINE (Canadian Tire Employee and cashier) said to my wife that her medical plastic and impermeable mask wouldn't be tolerated in the store next time she came by, with a highly judgmental tone. My wife was instantly stunned as she had never been spoken in such a way before. Feeling uncomfortable of the situation, my wife grinned (through her hard plastic mask) and did not reply to her remarks whatsoever yet, overwhelmed by her judgmental tone. JUSTINE saw her grin through my wife's mask and immediately threatened my wife verbally and told her it wasn't appropriate to grin when spoken to, as she was serious about the matter. JUSTINE then kept repeating (lasted 15 seconds yet it seemed like an eternity) she had no right to grin in this manner and boosted her voice reiterating that she better take her seriously as she had the power to remove her from the store premises.
At this point I stepped in verbally and said told her to calm down. She began threatening me as well with the same proverbial speech as my wife, treating us as if we were criminals, from which I replied, she had better take a "valium" to help her calm her stress level. Her immediate response to my remark was to kick us out of the Canadian Tire store at which point I politely asked her to call her boss as I wanted to report the incident and her behaviour.
Minutes later the store manager (mid-60's) came up to me (didn't introduce himself as the manager or boss and he didn't want to give me his name) and said to leave the premises to which I replied "did you hear how JUSTINE had talked to us?". The manager AGAIN repeated the same words "to leave the premises" and leave the merchandise we had brought to the cashier. He obviously did not want to hear how arrogant JUSTINE responded to us. I wanted to file a complaint and the manager who did not want to give me his name said to leave. As respectful Canadian Citizens we politely left the premises as requested. The End!
Now and after careful thought on this unfortunate incident, we consider being a traumatic event, both my wife and I cannot understand what motivated JUSTINE (employee) to act in this manner. Hopefully it wasn't an abuse of power or worst yet, RACIST REMARKS & ATTITUDE towards me wife, as she is black!
Desired outcome: A written report of JUSTINE’s unethical behaviour in her employee file and advise top management at Canadian Tire of this incident.
