Care given to senior residents
My dad has been in the Neches House since Sept 2011. When we went up to see the Director to fill out paperwork, he went beyond his job to make my dad and myself feel wecome. When he came out of a Rehab for recovery from being in a hospital, the Director who assisted us at the time, was fired. Had no clue why. They are working on their 2nd director, and by talking with her on some of the things going on, she makes me feel like she is totally not concerned. The only hope my Dad had in that place was a employee by Wendy, who was awesome to my dad and other residents, but she has moved on to another job. When I visit my dad, he says that he has noticed some of possessions have come up missing. I keep him supplies with snacks and when it's time to stock up for him, he is totally out of everything. I know that my dad doesn't go through the amount of food and personal items in one week.
Another thing they say they have house keeping come in and clean the apartments. That is a joke. His bathroom wasn't clean in 2 weeks and the smell from the bathroom was beginning to be overwhelming. It smelled stall and musty. I had taken my dad to go run errands a week ago, and when we came back housekeeping was in his room, and when we came in the girl was snooping through his closet. I give my dad money, and it has been noticeable that he is asking for alot more now. I asked him if he tips these people for cleaning and he says no. I went to visit him on Father's Day, to take him out for lunch, we couldn't lock his room because his keys were missing. Knowing my dad, he always kepted his keys in his pocket. When I asked the director about getting another set, she said that they were being made. (he went 3-4 days) without being able to lock his room, I asked her if they go in there room, and she assured me they didn't. My dad now props something up against his door now, so they just don't barge in.
I am currently trying to get him out of there, but they are no help in regards to getting his records to the nursing home that I am trying to get him in.
All I can say, don't put your parents in this place.

Threats of &points&to be assessed if complaints made
This Assisted Living Concepts Assisted Living facility (Austin House ) has for the past few years cut the number of staff attending residents even though the number of residents has risen; the quality, quatity, and variety of foods served has diminished under mandatory -- company directed -- budget cuts in food allowances and the "second" (weekends and some week days) cook is grossly unaware of the quality of food served; the quality, longevity, and morale of side has diminished markedly with the most senior, well-trained aides being demerited or fired in order to hire untrained, poorly trained, uncaring, inept staff. Some aides are scgeduled to work for 16 straight hours two weekend days putting residents at risk. Residents are threatened by "reassessment of points" resulting in higher daily costs whenever complaints are made or whenever a resident has a need -- short-term or long-term -- in spite of the facility being an assissted living facility which offers aid with :basic needs. No recreation or activities director has been hired, although one has been promissed for 5 months. No exercise is provided other than audio tape; activities posted on a calendar are fictious and never led or promoted by anyone working in the facillity. "Secret" deals are struck with new teneants while longer-term tenants are charged more and more. Family dinners and monthly family events have been abandoned for a once a year family dinner -- this year held on a Tuseday night when few family members, an NO out-of-town family members were able to attend. Aides have been found sleeping during nights when they are to be awake and aware; aides have "hidden" dso as not to be disturbed by a needy resident or family member. Numerous falls and injuries have gone for hours unnoticed or unattended to because mandatory "two-hour" sweeps of hallways have been abandoned.
Residents have been neglected by a company which touts a 34.9% gain in profits. All profits have come on the backs of numerous helpless senior citizens who are afraid of retaliation by increased costs assessed or by unsavory business and personal practices. AVOID THIS COMPANY

Thank you for confirming what I suspected.
The town of Denison takes a lot of pride in practicing good business. How did the Reed House of Assisted Living Concepts manage to stay under cover for so long? This business needs to be outed.
I am having the same problem with my relative at the Reed House in Denison, Iowa. Do they even have a director anymore? I am not getting any calls returned. This bills are incorrect and my emails are not answered. Wait, I did get one call back from Ken in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area. Even the regional manager is confused as the phone call reported "sorry, we gave you the wrong number with no answering machine, " but didn't leave the correct number. Or maybe they were telling me they "tried to return my call and I didn't have an answering machine" which is not true. There are a lot of lies going on with this company. We have an attorney now, since it has gone on far too long and we are reporting this to the Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau. We are billed (even though we cancelled immediately) but they have had the keys the whole time. They have been authorized to market the unit but how would we even know if they were attempting to do that? Please, would like to hear how anyone else has been able to get out of this place!
I don't know why the apostrophe's in the above complaint don't work, apologies.
I agree, so glad I am not alone on this. Promises, promises, promises ... we haven't heard a word about the facility in Iowa we were to move into at the Denison location. Our check has been cashed, my mother will not move in, they have the keys, we can't get our money or phone calls returned.
In January of this year it was decided that the facility in Denison, Iowa, would be a great place for my mother to live. Many area residents have told us great things and how caring the staff is towards their own family members. The staff was very good at returning our calls and answering our questions, UNTIL AFTER we actually signed the contract. Seven days after the contract had been signed, my mother had a miraculous turnaround; she can take care of herself and is able to stay in her own home where she is comfortable and safe. She is not moving, and she gave the facility both verbal and written notice within seven days.
We didn't get a copy of the contract until a week later, no one could seem to find it. I suggested they look at the computer and voila! there it was. The keys were returned, the termination papers signed, and the stop payment authorization was sent in. We followed all the steps necessary. We asked what needs to take place, what our options are and no one knew what to do. This situation had never taken place before "in the history of the company."
We were referred to the Omaha area manager. He told me since my mother had signed a 12 month contract (before we had a copy of the contract) that she would owe for 12 months whether she lived there or not. I asked him what would happen if they would market and re-rent my mother's unit. He replied that my mother would still be paying for the 12 months rent, even if she didn't live there, along with the new tenants.
I told him that was not legal: in the state of Iowa you cannot charge two rents for the same unit. His reply to me was, "We can and we do and we will." The director of the residence told me she heard what this gentleman had told me about "double dipping" and said, "He lied to you." Yes, he did, and this is not acceptable. I do not want my mother living in a facility that condones this. It raised all kinds of red flags, from the contract not being located, to different employees telling us different things, and calls not being returned. Rather than let us out of the contract, we were steered into renting a one bedroom apartment instead of a studio. We will not move in.
They could break my mother's contract to upgrade her, they could break my mother's contract if she became too ill for them to accommodate her.
It is an "adhesive" contract. The facility can cancel the contract at any time. We are not able to cancel it on our end.
We are still not sure what our options are and are still waiting for the Regional manager to call us back from a week ago. And we are waiting for the director to call us back, and that is a call we've been waiting for since last Wednesday.
Does anyone else have a situation like this? What was the final outcome for you? Open to suggestions.
Its all about making as much money as possible. Similar things will start happening in the UK more and more as these kinds of facilities become privatised. Its shocking that the eldery or any vunerable person is left in these conditions. Are there no authorities that investigate these complaints?
astor house
I am a former employee of Astor house one of the many houses owned by Assisted Living Concepts, being a employee there once for a year and the second time almost 2 years, I have seen alot, this corporation does not care about the residents all they care about is how to get the money the food is awful and there are always they same thing, temperatures of foods are not taken, because there is only one med aide on the floor per shift, rooms are left filthy, urinated laundry left in rooms for days, people have been overmedicated, and neglected! It a very worriesome place to be employeed, this corporation cares nothing about the elderly that live there its all about the money, there are no activities for residents unless its done by a voulenteer, the bus hardly runs and it leaks, this is the oregon coast so with a leaky roof on the van its impossible to take residents anywhere, but assisted living concepts who steals lots of money from the elderly, is to cheap to replace or repair their van! I am telling anyone who has a parent, if you are looking for a assisted living facilty for your parent, be very careful, I wouldnt put my dog in Astor House, let alone a parent I love, there are many other assisteted living faculities here in astoria or seaside, that are good, but I would not recommend Astor House of Astoria Oregon to anyone, be very careful!

This is the worst hotel I have ever had to stay in. It's supposed to be a three star hotel and it has NO AIR CONDITIONING! It's very small in size in the bathrooms and the rooms. The staff is very nice. But, it's very uncomfortable. We had to get two fans and keep them
running the whole time. I have never heard of a three star hotel with no air conditioning! Also the beds are very hard like a rock!
Sounds very familiar, it is a shame that some really great people got treated with such hatred. I think this company should be shut down. Sorry to hear about others experiences similar to mine. Thanks.
I also worked for the company for approx. 8 years. Worked my rear off, worked multiple shifts often, was called to fill in on a daily basis, even volunteered doing activities on my wharf little bit of time off that I had. The last two years, I was treated like dirt and felt like the Corporate level was trying to push me out by messing up on my benefits and pay checks. I always spoke up about problems and regulations that were being broken. So, one day I was fired and given an outlandish write up where they attempted to belittle me and claimed that I was a trouble maker and a liar. The corporate level and new administrator also called me bad names and were extremely unprofessional. One year later, I got a bill for my annual insurance premium. Now, they have hired a new CEO. They are really talking the company up and their new expected positive changes that will benefit the elderly. The damage is already done. They will never change and will continue to lead everyone astray.
I worked at pioneer house in walla walla washington until 2 years ago. It wasn't a great company, but no serious problems until a new manager was hired and a noticeable difference in attitude by the upper managment became clear. Long time experienced workers were treated like garbage, service went downhill, and residents that seemed to need more care then we were set up to provide started moving in and it became a scary place to be. I didn't feel comfortable participating in a company with suspicious motives and declining levels of care and that seemed to care about money above all else so I quit after 8 years of service. I don't know what it is like anymore, but would think twice about moving your family member into it.
I used to work for these a holes, experienced workers forced out to make way for inexperienced low wage workers, I would never allow my family to live their.
I agree with what you say One of many previous employees. The comment I made about documentation was more or less directed toward Brenda who always seems to be what I would call "a know it all."
That being said though I do stand by the fact that I document, document, document. What happens to this documentation once it leaves my hands does end up as you state in many instances. So as wrong as many may find what I am about to say, I must state this anyway.
I live by the old rule of "Cover thine own ###."
The problem is that the administrators at the houses are so desperate for a job that they lie to the State when they come in to visit. This has happened on multiple occasions at a facility in Jackson County, Oregon. Also, documentations tend to get mysteriously misplaced. Documentation won't matter anyways because they will accuse you of being a trouble maker and a liar. They will then fire you because you will not follow through with their plan of being untruthful to the public and for not selling the place and making more money for them.
In response to Brenda: Are you in this line of work? Just thought you must be. If you are then you know we keep tons of documents. State law requires that we keep accurate records of anything and everything. State law also holds each caregiver personaly responsible to report anything of an unlawful nature.
And be assured that each violation is thouroughly investigated and all the company is required to do is correct any violations found by the state investigation.
Alison, I am currently employed by ALC in the Southeast region. I will say you are spot on. Our facility has the exact same issues you mention.
In my opinion corporate is the problem, without question. With 200+ facilities one should wonder why so many ALC houses, in several states have the same identical problems going on.
All I know that we as caregivers can do is provide the best care we can. Our residents deserve better but at least I can sleep good when I go home with the knowledge that I gave it my all despite being required by ALC to work with limited staff and supplies, materials etc...
Marigold House-Alexandria, LA
The facility makes promises to families and cannot possibly keep because of lack of staff. They have two (2) personal care aides for 45 residents. Security system is never on and residents have been found wandering down the busy street (4 lane) or have been found outside and fallen on the ground and unable to get up without assistance. My family member has been found in deplorable condition and appeared she/he had been that way for quite some time (hours). Medication is being given by a person with an extensive criminal record. There is not a dietician to plan meals for residents. Very unsatisfied with facility, all they give you is false promises.
All of this is true, and much worse. I am a former Director there. The alarm is frequently off due to the fire alarm system going off and it disabling the magnetic locks, leaving all of the doors unlocked for hours at at a time, since the contracted alarm company has to sent a tech from Shreveport. Also, the assistant, Shonda, is bitter and hateful because she is consistently passed over for promotion due to her inexperience and poor attitude, so she enjoys making life miserable for anyone else that gets the job. During my tenure, she broke into the rooms of visiting employees to take pictures and rummage through their stuff, then show the pics to other staff, and do other things to sabotage events. There were also several incidents of theft- both of cash and medications. I reported it to the regional director as per policy only to find he and the corporate office covered it up. One of the ladies that pass meds (Catrice) has a history of stealing money and meds from residents. The regional director and corporate staff know this, but they refused to let us get rid of her. She was barred from another facility for being caught for the same thing! When I left there was no maintenance person, only one housekeeping person (who was also getting ready to leave), and bare bones staff. If you care for your family, DO NOT place them in ANY Assisted Living Concepts/Enlivant property...
I agree. Often it is near impossible for an outsider to really shift through the marketing strategies and know that there is inadequate staffing to meet minimal standards of care, until a loved-one moves in and begins to make these observations themselves. Family may misconstrue loved ones concerns as adjustments to a new environment, or they have always been a bit critical etc...My suggestion is to listen, make your own observations, if you see one staff member on evening/night shift ask yourself how can one person be responsible to give showers, answer emergency call lights, answer telephone, pass medications, perform housekeeping duties, serve meals, provide personal care, etc...The employees normally love the residents. Their frustration is too much is being placed on them.
used to work for assisted living concepts, astor house astoria oregon, looks like they run all their houses the same, get your mom out of there while you still have a mom

Care given to senior residents
Company( from Menomonee Falls, WI) operates under many different names and in many different states as an assisted living home for seniors. Charging astronomical amounts per day and month, they cannot deliver what they promise when they leave a whole building under the care of just one employee at a time. They do not live up to what they are selling. They claim to have everything you need for your mom or dad to be safe and happy and then just dump them in their rooms with no activities, horrible food, uneducated and non licensed employees and then let them get hurt, lose weight, and become depressed. There is no personal care given, just the minimal. If you question them they tell you " The state says we don't have to do that in assisted living." Well it is funny how they can do everything right up until they get you to sign on the contract. Then suddenly...its not their job! If it is true that the state does not make them do what they say they will do, then shame on any state that allows them to do do business ! Don't listen to their words, look at their actions. Ask to see a schedule. Ask to see credentials.Talk to current residents. Don't fall into their scam because that is all it is. Find a more reputable company to trust with the care of your husband, wife, or parent.

I will tell you first hand that the truth to the statement "if corporate knows anything...employee will be fired" that is exactly what just happened to me this past summer. I voiced a complaint to HR regarding the Heartland division regional director of operations(RDO), who we will call "warthead" for now and the so called "intelligent corp specialist" who were just as useless and clueless as the next. I was working on fixing assessment tools online as resident's were being overcharged for many years, months or even entire time residing in my residence. We were supposed to have a trifecta team in every house, I was it! I had no orientation except for about a 7 hour day with another wellness director(WD) at the Butler location and then set free. There was no regional nurse until the flop of a WD at my house resigned, came back to ALC short time after quitting, probably threatened to quit again so she was promoted ! Another person that flopped another residence was also promoted to corp level? Anyway, the HR girl that I had sent my complaint to never responded in no way, shape or form. Then the new "buy out" and how everything is "going to get so much better", give me a break I have reached out to the new CEO and let me tell you he can give two sh**'s about the residents and the families only to keep the beds full from what I see. It is pure torture knowing what I know and worrying about the wonderful residents and their families being robbed of time, money and dignity by the lack of standing up and following own company policy and procedures beginning at the corp level, although a little birdie has said the a couple of the corp clueless VPs were just let go...great step in right direction from what I witnessed.
Does anyone know who the President is currently for ALC? I need to contact him and go over the heads of the head nurse and her boss for the home in Lufkin. I have seen good people who actual care for the residents to be replaced with inexperienced personnel. I am so tired of seeing the good leave and the bad continue to mistreat residents and employees because of a degree. You got that education, use it and if you don't have people skills and patience, you don't belong in this type of field.
FYI! ALC has been bought out by another company as of earlier this month...TPG Capital.
Maybe now things will change! Come on TPG make my house GREAT & my job worth it!
I have good & bad things to say about the ALC house I work for in east Texas. My Resident & Wellness Directors are GREAT, they have been in the business for a long time & truly are there for our residents. The kitchen, laundry, & activities ladies will do whatever they can to please our residents. The PSA workers are about even, most of us want to be here, enjoy our jobs & love our residents but like at anything business you have those few that are just here for a pay check. That's frustrating to those of us that truly care for our residents. As far as the overall company ALC...they suck! I feel they should put some of the money they get each month from our residents back into the house. My house is always in need of silverware & glasses. They could update the table linens, the dirty carpet throughout the house...I could go on & on about the updating that is needed. Our PSA's need better training, better pay & drug testing.
I am currently employed with alc as a dining service coordinator. Just so everyone knows I have dedicated my time and heart for every resident. All my meals are hot and fresh. I believe That my building has one of the largest menu's. So far what I've seen from the corporate level is garbage. They either fire anyone they want or people just quit. All I know is I should be making $35, 000 to $50, 000 a year. I make 30 cents above minimum wage... And I believe what major faults the company has come from corporate short changing every employee, if psa's and med techs have to go to college for there positions I would believe they would be paid more than $9.25 a hour. With that kind of wage the company will never be able to keep people employeed. What else I've noticed is our building makes over $110, 000 a month. And were always short on staff from everyone quitting. If you want most of these problems addressed, people who have family living in a alc building is fight for the staff, I promise you that I've came in at midnight before to cook for 2 residents who just got back from the hospital. My activity's lady is far beyond anything you could ever imagine she is the sweetest lady and I believe one of the major reasons residents stay. If you want anything done go to the top and fight and fight... If not I believe one day the good ones who really care about your family members will be gone. Hope this kind of helps some of you out. I hope alc changes soon because I feel like it might already be to late for this company. From A dedicated Chef In Washington.
The staff was friendly and took good care of my father. We were blessed to have found a place that Dad could go and enjoy the privacy of his own apartment but know that help was there if he needed it. It was tough on the family knowing we couldn't care for Dad, but from the day he moved in it was clear we made the right choice. Sojourner made us feel comfortable and Dad started to join in activities and socialize again which had not happened since Mom died. We thank the staff for all they do and bringing Dad's smile back.
All True, Just understated - amazing control ...
I have written in above posts about my experiences with ALCCO's home in Three Rivers, Michigan. Well, to explain a little further, mom lived there 2 years. Things were getting so bad, we were planning to move her, but what really prompted the move sooner than the 30 days notice we had to give was the fact that I found out they had been operating without a license for the last 6 months mom lived there. My dad has long term care insurance for her and it REQUIRED the facility to be licensed. Well, long story short..for the last year ALCCO has been sending my dad bills for the balance of the last 30 days she lived there...we moved her out on day 11 of the 30 days and they kept billing him for $3075 and sending him letters telling him that if they had to hire an attorney my dad would have to pay for it. Well, we contacted an attorney of our own and he said to have no more communication with them and we didn't, up until this week when I found out the CEO, Laurie Bebo had been fired from her position with the company. I thought, ok...a new person in charge, let's try getting this bill resolved once and for all. You see, my 84 year old dad worried everytime he went to the mailbox that he was going to have a bill from them and it truly bothered him. So I got the new CEO's email address and sent him an email about the situation..I sent it a 9:47am. By 10:30 am I had a phone call from someone from the company wanting a litle more info from me. I emailed him more details and within 10 minutes he was calling back and told me that my dad's account had been zero'd out...no balance due! He told me that CEO Roadman truly cares about customer service and treating people right. I CAN TRULY BELIEVE IT. I could not believe how fast he resolved this issue for me! I hope he makes the choice to fire a lot of employees and get some in the facilities who really care about the residents, too. I believed that ALCCO's theme before was promises, promises, promises...but am changing my view a little. Hoping to see great improvement with Mr. Roadman as head of the company! Just too bad we had to move my mom out of their facility and 40 miles from home now instead of 10..makes it difficult to visit her as often as we'd like.
I worked for an ALCCO community in southeast Texas for about 15 months. I had been going to the community as a home health nurse for several residents when the RD asked me if I would interested in the Wellness Director (nurse) job when I earned my RN degree. I took the job and began the day my license was listed on the Texas State Board of Nursing website. The RD had been the WD and had conveniently been promoted again to Regional Nurse less than two weeks after I began working. I, new to the business and as a supervisor and the ONLY nurse in the facility, was left to run the duties of the RD and the WD for two months when a new RD was hired. The air conditioning malfunctioned until it no longer worked for about a year. Finally, last summer, the company ok'd it to be replaced. In Texas, in these HOT summers with no air conditioning. Each resident room has a PTAC unit, so they found relief in their rooms, but for the visitors, volunteers and employees--90+ degree heat=inhumane. They did not care.
The comment made about the only concern being sales...you hit the nail on the head. The sales manager is required to perform 20-25 sales call weekly, the RD is required to do 10 (1/2 that of the sales manager, but also responsible for all of the micromanaged tasks of the building/operations/staffing/ etc. I was required to perform 2 calls weekly which was not bad, but I am not a sales-person. Nurses/WDs with under 40 residents are paid a salary based on the following formula: 1 hour per patient per week. So, we had 32 residents=I got paid for 32 hours. Do not be confused, you will work much more than 32 hours per week and that is Laurie Bebo's expectation as she makes the comment that 12-hour shifts are a standard by most "tri-fecta" staff. Now, if your facility has 40+ residents, you are paid for 40 hours per week.
Upon hire, you are promised (or at least I was) that you will receive adequate training for your job. Negative. Count yourself lucky that you will meet with your regional nurse to complete your "check-off
list"...consider that your formal training. I was luckier than most because my regional nurse (the former WD/RD of my facility) liked me and would tell everyone she "hand-picked", but I can tell you that most other WDs were not. When I would vocally disagree with my regional nurse, I received a "1" on my "quarterly" evaluation, but the hilarious thing about it...that "1" was based partially on the time-frame that was used for my annual raise that I did receive. Again, I was lucky because my RD, sales manager, and most of the direct care staff (who make minimum wage) did not receive annual raises. Per company policy, the rating system is 5, 3, 1. Only one direct care staff member could receive a rating of 5 which resulted in a 5% raise. Out of about 10-12 employees, maybe 3-4 received 3% raises, yet every year, the daily rates for residents to live in the community increase at least $3/day "to cover raises". Sure they do.
For 15 months, I asked (almost weekly) what the process was to implement the hourly pay of the direct care staff at our facility. It was virtually impossible (once I actually got an answer) because there was an analysis that had to completed based on three other assisted living facilities that had the number of patients we did and did not require any certification AT ALL within a 30 mile radius (I believe). Impossible in the Golden Triangle. Also, the PSAs (personal service attendants) and the Medication Aides do not require certification and do not receive any extra money for being certified because that would require ALCCO to pay them more. Want to know who is responsible for training them, monitoring them, and any mistakes they make (as un-certified personnel)...the one nurse in the community...the WELLNESS DIRECTOR. You know, the WD (like me) who was scheduled to work 4-8 hour shifts to comprise her 32-hour workweek). Yep...nice, huh?
When the president of the company that you work for is listed on Forbes and makes a base salary equal to what I earned a month refuses to shake her employees hands and goes as far as to tell them that this may not be the job for them (after they have busted their buttocks to make things work as best they could)...there is a problem. When she makes almost twice as much in bonuses as her annual base salary, but when the majority of her employees are not receiving duly-earned raises, let alone bonuses...there is a problem. I agree that if you are working at any job, it is your/my responsibility as a nurse/employee/human being to stand up to the wrongs and for what is right, but I can honestly and sincerely tell you that Assisted Living Concepts based out of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and run by President/CEO Laurie Bebo is not going to change anything about the current situation because she is making off like a bandit. How is the president/CEO of a company meeting her criteria for bonuses when most of her employees are not?
I will say that at our facility, the majority of staff loves their jobs and that love for their job and the residents they care for is the only thing that keeps them there. Yes, there are some that do not care but they were/are the minority. If not for the restraints/constraints put on the local facilities by the corporate office, they would be much more efficient, effective and "properly" staffed. I might consider placing my loved one there with the current staff that is in place because they have proven their loyalty to the residents and I know they care because I worked with most of them. That being said, I would never allow my money or their money to line the pockets of those who are in charge at the regional and corporate level.
As far as working for ALCCO, I can handle almost any adversity or difficult situation, but that was a very educational experience for me. I will find it impossible to every secure employment with a company more poorly operated, but at the same time...I learned how I did not want to be. As a nurse, being on call 24/7 is draining especially when you are not properly compensated for it. In my area, the going rate for a WD is $25/hour. You can go to work at home health, a school, hospice, or hospital and make more without the headaches of having to deal with the thoughtless doings of a severely micro-managed company whose priority is not patient care, but sales or B-I-B (butts-in-beds).
I sincerely hope that change comes to ALCCO, but I do not see it happening. If you offered any job at any level...RUN! You can do much better and have much better luck making changes that desperately need to take place. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
At-a-job-that-truly-makes-me-appreciate-being-a-nurse (DMF)
