Check Denials
I went to WalMart and had a basket full of groceries and was declined after the clerk ran my check. I was completely humilated and annoyed because I have never had issues using checks in the past. The clerk gave me Certergy's number and I called and they told me that since I was not in there database I could not write checks in any of the stores that they monitor... What a joke, these companies are losing money because of this, after that incendent I went right to Price Chopper and had no problem writing a check.(Price Chopper does not use Certergy)
Declining good checks
My husband and I both wrote checks to our local K-mart from 2 different checking accounts and both were declined by Certergy. We then used our debit card from one of the same accounts and because it did not go through Certergy was accepted. We contacted Certergy a number of times trying to get a reason our good checks were declined. All we got was a standard no explanation answer. We then asked for letters in writing as was stated on the printout on the back of our declined checks. After almost a month and several requests we have not received the letters. We have contacted corporate K-mart who seems rather unconcerned. We know a number of customers this has happened to and feel that retail stores are getting a bad service from Certergy and will ultimately suffer from this but how do we get someone to do something about this? We too were embarrassed and will not return to
K-mart or any store that uses Certergy.

Certegy is in place to protect the businesses. I have never heard of a case where Certegy had messed up like that. Could a store have falsely reported you? If so, I would work with Certegy to discover the root cause. If you have never had a check issue before, the root of the problem had to be a store that uses their service. Certegy took over SCAN (Shared Checks Authorization Network), which many stores using Certegy used until the buyout. I don't know how their systems work, but perhaps SCAN had information that hadn't properly migrated over to Certegy yet.
