Claire's management

Not surprised!
i've experienced crappy racist's management at claire's these last few days!
i had a problem with them, they said that's why jacksonville, nc store in particular only have the one black employee working for them.
So i'm guessing she alone is good enough to fit their quota.
Disgusting!
they tried to convince me it was the "black" sales rep. Fault, when in actuallity it was white management not being honest.

btw she is brown, not "black".
Do to the horrific experiance at claire's & seeing they have a video camera globe on their store ceiling, they can probably see my credit/debit card security pin code that i entered into their system at checkout... Today i withdrew all funds & deminished credit limit on the card to a zero...
Therefore i can be sure their trickey, deceptive practises will
not affect my account. I do not trust knowing that claire's store could possible have access to any of my brown pennys.

Claire's False Imprisonment and false shoplifting charges

I am writing out of frustration regarding an event that happened on 12/29/2010. My 17 year old daughter was shopping at Deerbrook Mall at Claire’s Boutique when she was physically stopped outside the store by an unidentified employee of UF Security (contracted by Claire’s) and was falsely accused of shoplifting. My daughter was made to go back inside the store where she was found not to have any merchandise but was still hauled away by the mall police and issued a citation for “theft under $50”. I now have to go to court to defend my daughter’s rights. She was with her mother at the time of the incident who was made to leave the store while my daughter was searched.

The thing that gets me is that this was a busy shopping day, being that it was just after Christmas, there were many people in the store. The "employee" obviously made a mistake, or even giving benefit of the doubt, maybe she thought she saw something. The standard practice of a store accusing someone is to maintain constant surveillance on the shoplifter in question so that they can't "ditch" the stolen merchandise. This helps the store from avoiding any embarrassing mishaps. If they don't have any merchandise on them the practice is to let the suspect go. This didn't happen. Now I have to hire an attorney to defend my daughter against an incompetent, poorly trained and bitter employee who can't admit that they might have made a mistake. The worst part about it is that I reached Claires regarding the matter and their stance was that they are going to support their loss prevention person and proceed with action against my daughter, stating that although they "don't want to give her a record, it is a good way to learn a lesson". A lesson of what?!?!? That they have a record of doing this? That they hire incompetent people to "profile" potential shoplifters?

I hope that everyone that reads this and has had a negative experience in Claire's or any other retail store thinks twice about shopping there. Especially if they just have that sinking feeling that someone is watching them unjustly. I, personally, will never step foot in a Claire's Boutique or any of their sister stores, nor will I ever go back to Deerbrook Mall, in Humble Texas simply because of the treatment there.

txmom2five is the closest to anyone educated here! My daughter and her friend (13 at the time) called me one day in the all to say they had been "accused of shoplifting at Clair's and were being held by the 'police.'" When I got there, there they were with a "mall rent-a-cop." I pulled the aside and said what is going on? My daughter's friend said that she actually put some pierced earrings on and the girl accused her of trying to steal them. Neither of these girls has any reason to steal a $2 pair of earrings. They were terrified. I got involved and we got into words. Next a real cop shows up and pretty much deescalates the situation. After a few choice words from me -- we left. The girls then told me that the Claire's girl (before I had gotten there) forced the to give out all their personal information. The rent-a-cop tried to get me to sign a piece of paper saying that we would never enter the mall again. I told him to stick it. Nobody can make you sign something. THE SCAM (below)

They actually pressed shoplifting charges because they had their information. I showed up at court and nobody from there showed and we were dismissed. The end? OH NO . . .

CLAIR'S DEPENDS ON SHOPLIFTERS! The employees are not expected to find a shoplifter, but they are rewarded! This makes everybody a suspect. You can pay your fine, go to court like me, get it dismissed (like me), or be found innocent . . . the end? OH NO . . . NEXT, you get a letter from some law firm in Florida that you must pay (in my case) $1, 000+ or they are going to sue me in civil court for damages. Combing the internet, I find that people are actually taken in by the threatening letters and try to pay, make deals, etc. If you pay anything, you have just admitted guilt. THIS IS HUGE MONEY-MAKING INDUSTRY FOR CLAIRE'S AND THEIR OTHER STORES! If you get a letter from them (innocent or guilty) -- TOSS IT. Do not even acknowledge. When they start calling, hang up - or block them. Tell them not to ever call again.THIS IS A SCAM. If they don't find a REAL SHOPLIFTER, they will accuse the easiest target (tweens alone). They make more from this than any of the cheap sh*& they sell in these stores. for every "shoplifter" they accuse, they bring in a days take in, if not more!

Unfortunately, we must now educate our daughters on what to do if they are accused of shoplifting and STAY OUT OF CLAIRE'S! To the lady that wrote this post -- HOW did they separate you from your daughter? You should have called the police. They had her kidnapped. Mall police cannot "write citations." You should have stood up for yourself and your daughter (I am not criticising you, just trying to be informative when others are caught in this game!) They know what buttons to push, how to make you think they are within their rights, etc. This is something they are trained on! This should be against the law and until everyone BOYCOTTS CLAIRE'S AND ANY OF THEIR OTHER STORES, this will continue. If nobody shops; there, there will be nobody to "accuse."

Educated consumer 266 - you are not "educated". Since it's considered a Class C misdemeanor she's not entitled to a court appointed attorney. So, the dad has to shell out his own $ to fight the case. And, yes, they will prosecute because they are hoping the parents will pay the fine instead, then they can go after them for more $ in civil court. In TX - that's up to $5k. Hmmm, theft under $50, but you can sue in civil court and potentially get $5k. Sounds like they are looking to make mad $ off of parents who just want to protect their kids and who can't afford an attorney to fight it. Sad, but true.

I find it sad that parents automatically believe their children over adults. If the store was busy what did the employee have to gain by taking her time away from her other duties? Do you really think the employee would assume she stole if your daughter wasn't doing something wrong or even suspicious?

I had a very negative interaction today at Claire's. I had a complaint and was talking to the assistant manager who very very rude to me; she sighed, huffed, rolled her eyes while I was talking to her. I informed the manager who tried to tell me that the incident never happened because she was standing right there and saw the whole thing. She threatened to call the police and told me I was verbally harassing her. I told her to go ahead. And waited. The guy eventually shows up and she told him I threatened to "kick (her) f(bleep)ing ###". I said no such thing. I had my children with me and I don't use that language. I know it's hard to believe, but I can get my point across without dropping an f-bomb. I will NEVER set foot in a Claire's again nor will I allow any of my five children to do so.

On another point, both the manager and the assistant manager were dressed like [censored]s. I, literally, could see most of their breasts and their skirts were barely beneath the bottom of their butt cheeks. Is this the message Claire's wants to send to our daughters? If so, they can keep their cheap, crappy jewelry.

Thanks for posting your experience (educated consumer). I've had a similar situation at a target, where my wife was shopping, forgot to pay for something and when she was leaving the store, she set the electronic device off. When she was turning aroung to find out what happened, she was forcefully grabbed from behind by three employees. She never left the store, had no intention of stealing anything, was never given a chance to discuss what happened. My wife is absent minded at times, but not a thief. All that was needed was to confront her and say Ma'am do you happen to have something you forgot to pay for? or allow even a second or two for the person to acknowledge that the alarm went off and she needed to return to the cashier or customer service. There was no concealment, no intent, but the brilliant highly educated personnel, deemed it necessary to take the action that they did. Target needs to investigate, as well as review their own policies and procedures!

Not that i'm calling anyone out here but if the daughter is truly innocent then justice will prevail. Don't waste your money on an attorney, let the system provide one for her.Claires can foot the bill later. You cannot be deemed a criminal without proof, by that I mean hard evidence or fact. If she did not do it then there is no video of such an act. That combined with no possesion, leads to the plaintiff or prosecuter failure to show proof. That being said... I'm sure you heard the expression "burden of proof", if the prosecution cannot support the accusation with fact there is no case and will go dismissed. Go to the pretrial enter a plea of not guilty and let it go to trial... no atty in there right mind is going to invest the costs of a hearing over $50 unless they believe they have a case, keep in mind however that if your daughter is hiding the truth and they prove it the punishment will be harsh and exspensive. Good luck.
