Gym Membership have not used membership over a year

I have not used my membership for over a year, because they said it was a 24hour gym, tried to get in on night 3 or 4 times, could not get in, so I quit going have not heard from them over a year, about money, they saw I was not going so they quit taking money out of my account, then I get a letter in the mail from ABC Financial that they started to money out of my account, the only thing is that I lost my job on 4/30/15, so I have no money coming in, I have to find a phone to call them

Gym Membership Cancellation not processed

Golds Gym held my husband to his one year contract even though he was called into active duty. When he stopped paying his monthly dues, his account was handed to a collections agency. When contacted by the agency he paid in full what they were calling to collect to fulfill the one year agreement. He advised the agency he did not want to continue a membership with Golds Gym. The agency said nothing about him needing to contact Golds Gym directly. Two years later he received a call from the same collections agency stating that his contract was not cancelled and he owed another two years worth of monthly dues! When I called corporate headquarters they said that we were responsible for the amount because the collections agency doesn't have the ability to cancel the contract. Why weren't we told that by the agency?!?! And how were we supposed to know that the agency was not a part of Golds Gym?!?! The Golds Gym recovery agent, Jody was unsympathetic and did not even care to listen to all of what I had to say before interrupting me to tell me that it is my husband's responsibility to know the terms of his contract. She continued to say that while over speaking me over and over again. It is hard for me to believe that in fine print on the contract it says, "Our collections agency is not a part of Golds Gym. You must contact Golds Gym directly to cancel your membership." Jody's words were, "You can ask anyone in the company, this is how this is always handled." So this must be a normal occurrence!

Gym Membership Rude managers/lack of ownership

I had an issue when I tried to cancel my account. The manager Lauren Turner (condescending, rude and judgmental) refused to help me cancel my account so I contacted corporate who said they could not do anything but would have a franchise owner call me. I waited a week and heard nothing so I called the portland branch again getting a different manager (which is funny because when I asked Lauren if there was ANYONE else but her i could speak with she said no). His name is Ben. Ben appeared to be extremely helpful and cancelled my membership and since I had recently lost my job and knew my bank account would be low I SPECIFICALLY asked if I would receive ANY more bills from them. He confidently assured me he had taken care of it and no I would not receive any more bills. Well, low and behold when I check my bank account before getting gas guess who took out 19.99 and caused a $32 overdraft fee? That's right, portland planet fitness. I immediately called them and the young man who answered said a manager would call FIRST thing at 930 when she got in. No one called. So I call again and am lucky enough to get Ben who now tells me that because I cancelled so late in the month (being after the 10th) the payment for march was already set to go through and there was nothing they could do to help me and if I wanted to complain to contact corporate. Sound familiar? I highly doubt I will hear from the franchise owner and instead I get told I'm harassing them because I keep calling because I am sick of being passed off to the next person and told to wait for an answer. It is one of the most frustrating things I have ever gone through and I am still out 51.99 because of it. The most help I got was through contacting Westbrooks manager and even at that there isn't anything he can do. If you currently use them I highly suggest you cancel. Ben is a grown man who refuses to take ownership for misinforming me and the best I get is "well it's in the contract". Apparently not even Ben, the MANAGER, can understand the contract then and maybe they should consider re-writing it. By far the WORSE customer service experience that I have EVER has.

And the reason she wanted to speak to franchise owner was because they tried to debit her account in January it failed but February went through so when she tried to use the gym she was not allowed, tried to cancel and couldn't without paying the January bill. When no owner returned her complaint request that's when we contacted Ben and he assured her she would see no further charges and account was canceled. Both lies. How can you not empathize? O ya your a ###. Sit up on your elitist pedestal of perfect grammar and syntax that really makes you a better person than everyone else. Yet your from Hungary and not even from portland maine USA. Therefore have no life

Why are you defending planet fitness? Bottom line they promised her that would cancel without any future charges. The only reason she cancelled past the 10th is because she was waiting for a call back from the franchise owner which hasn't and will not happen. You seriously have nothing better to do then to come on this website and ridicule people for spelling errors most like my caused by anger and haste? I would tell you to go to hell but it it seems as though you are already in one of your own creation.

I asked Lifetime Fitness to Cancel my membership and I submitted a written request in person to the membership services desk. The Membership representative took the request and guaranteed that I fulfilled the requirement, no other actions are required on my end, and the cancellation will be activated in 30 days. When the 30 days period passed, I found out...

Gym Membership billing

A person Named Nancy Park called me and I explained to her that mu spouse and i are on unemployment and cannot affod any membership payments at this time and that we are continually harrassed by Paramount Acceptance to that end. Of course that made no impact upon her and I explained to her again that we as consumers have rights and that includes being harrassed via telephone continually. She bgan to lose her composure when I mentioned the Attorney Generals office and Federal Trade Commission complaints that were coming her way... people are suffering out here without jobs and important life matters, Golds Gym does not make it very far up the survival post when you are in a economy to these extremes. I have not wrked in a year my either, does that matter? Evidently we should dumpster dive for dinner and then go work out afterwards... :) Yummy... what pathetic Nazi-ism tactics...

Gym Membership Worst customer service experience ever!

I was a member of Anytime Fitness for over two years. I paid for my membership by automatic withdrawal. I moved from the McMinnville area and tried to close my membership. I was told I had to give TWO months notice in writing before they would stop taking payments from my checking account. This letter had to be received by the club before the 1st of the month. I talked to the Anytime Fitness in Albany and they said that if I worked out exclusively in the Albany club my membership would transfer.
I worked out exclusively in Albany from September 2009 until February 2010. Meanwhile McMinnville was receiving my membership dues.
In late January, I realized that I was not using my membership as much as I had expected so wrote a letter to Albany (thinking my membership had transferred) and it arrived there on the first of the month. They contacted McMinnville and faxed my letter to them. Meanwhile we are now on the 2nd of February. McMinnville called me and told me that I had to submit my request to withdraw 30 days in advance and it had to be before the 1st of the month. I asked for them to consider that I had submitted my request before the first, I was just mislead as to which store to send it to.

The manager argued with me. When I asked for the owner's number, I received an emergency number. I called that number and left a message. I sent an email to the website and the manager called me back and argued with me again. She basically maintained that they would take additional months worth of dues - as it was company policy. When I said I would stop my bank from paying an additional month, I was told the company would sue me and it would cost me more.

I was effectively blocked from talking to the owner since she told me she would relay the message and he would call me back. I never received a call. I am assuming that either my calls were effectively blocked or the owner didn’t care enough to return my calls.

More recently, when I notified Anytime Fitness that I filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, someone (they didn’t sign the emails) argued with me again reprimanding me for not honoring the contract. Two emails were sent then I quit emailing. That night I received 4 phone calls after 11pm – all of which I have reason to believe were related to my dispute with Anytime Fitness.

I again made several attempts to contact the owner leaving messages in another store he has. No response. Clearly Anytime Fitness is not concerned with customer relations.

Their response to my complaint to the BBB was yet another - unsigned - rude note reprimanding me and stating directly they would NOT apologize for how I was treated!

I believe this is my worst customer experience ever!

Charlz. Whether or not you respond to this is of no consequence to me. It is typical once the facts are brought up that merit less accusers run for the hills. I was expecting this from you once confronted with the facts. I will get to that later. I will answer your last comment first as to why "her or anyone would flame people who post comments about the service they received from a business", I have three reasons. Before I get to those reasons I think you should be clear that you are not speaking of service you received but rather the issues arising from an agreement that you agreed to sign, then had issues because the business followed it. Big difference! My reasons for posting here since you asked are; #1- I work in an industry that deals with contracts on a daily basis as I have previously stated. I found these comments directly related to my profession and have experience directly related to these situations. #2- I also have had a personal experience with this company, their contracts, procedures and know they did what we agreed to on our agreement, because I followed it as required. #3- I can't stand the fact that people want to blame others for their decision to agree to terms of a contract then want special considerations because the terms of the agreement they agreed to no longer suits them, then post inflammatory half truths on these sites to try and discredit reputable businesses. Those are my reasons. Now, to the FACTS, which you did not address in your last post. Not addressing the facts is commonplace for people who distribute blame as you do. In your last post you only want to point out technicality as to who you actually called (which is irrelevant since the contract doesn't ask you to call anyone, mail drop (goodness, it's a mailbox) OR club), and you want to point only to the 30 day notice period and the actual months you were charged ("soi disant" charges?!). Again, none of that is relevant unless you did all the other items. What about the certified letter I mentioned and is asked for in the contract, have proof? What about the club actually cancelling your membership in the club which is not even required of the club? Was your contract even eligible to cancel when you wanted to cancel it? Do you have bank statements proving these charges were taken out 30 days AFTER your certified letter and return receipt? All of these items together would prove you did what you say. You should possess all of these items if it all transpired as you claim. This paperwork is indisputable if you are telling the truth! This is FACT! If you expect anyone to believe that you followed all the terms of your agreement, sent your letter and have proof of it and got over charged after that point and you just let it go, come on! You will post here obsessively but not get your refund by providing this information to the club to prove a mistake they may have made?! This is not believable. As a matter of fact, if you can prove these items and you can prove Anytime Fitness denied you a refund I will arrange to help you get your refund through our office. That's how confident I am that you are only telling a story to fit your own delusions. Lastly, this site does serve a useful function if used by responsible posters. Posters who actually post on service they receive and not on contracts they sign then expect businesses to change the terms to fit them when they see fit. These statements are not assumptions or innuendo they are FACT. If you think otherwise, ALL of the paperwork I mentioned would prove it so.

Susief1's responses are full of name-calling and unverified assumptions. She even misquotes me in "proving" that she reads the comments, and then takes the opportunity to go into another splenetic tirade. What I said was that I got the telephone number of the maildrop from the gym and then called [it]. The inference is clear. She assumes that I called the gym rather than the maildrop. Oh well! Suffice it to say that I did everything the contract asked me to do and more, and money continued to be debited from my account from Feb. 11 to Apr. 11. (Susief1 "would bet" that this was the 30 day notice period--another wrong assumption that shows she didn't read my first comment closely.) Why is it necessary for her or anyone to "flame" people who post comments about the service that they received from a business. This website serves a useful function, and attacking the comments and character of other respondents doesn't seem to be a part of it. I am not going to respond to anything further she says: it seems clear that it would merely call up another farago of false assumptions and innuendo.

This response from charlz is typical of people who want to blame others for there own shortcomings. As stated in my previous comment, "NEITHER of the parties can deviate from the contract". So, if you followed the cancellation policy as stated on the agreement and an error was made by Anytime Fitness and money was collected outside of the agreed upon terms then a refund would be in order. Since your last comment I looked over my previous Anytime Fitness agreement and it clearly states that you should send a letter either certified or registered to the cancellation department. This is generally done so that a person has proof that a letter was sent. No company or individual can guarantee that our not so efficient US postal service always delivers letters that are addressed to them or that they are delivered to the proper addresses so, the registered or certified letter proves that the letter was mailed in case it is lost or wrongfully delivered. If you followed these instructions and met the terms of your agreement then you would have proof to get a refund for those extra days you were charged and I am sure Anytime Fitness would satisfy this request. Again, SIMPLE! Additionally, once the letter is received there is a 30 day notice as per the terms of your agreement. I would bet this is what charlz paid but again he probably failed to READ the agreement. Again, SIMPLE. Charlz stated that he considered the agreement as "not simple" in his previous comment (this term is code word for "I didn't read it so I want to blame somebody else"). By the way, I do read the comments before commenting and to prove it, here you go. In your last posting you stated you "called the gym". Where does it state on the agreement that when you want to cancel you should "Call the gym"? IT DOESN'T! Furthermore, if the facility cancelled your membership when you went into the gym then they did you a favor since the agreement CLEARLY states all cancellations must be mailed to the cancellation department (via certified or registered letter). They had no obligation to cancel your membership "at the club" but they did by your admission and you still want to complain and point fingers at all but yourself. So, maybe you should read your agreement before commenting or pointing the finger at others for your lack of examination and due diligence. As previously stated, this is typical of some people in my "soi disant legal expertise".

Susief1 should read the comments before commenting on them. Had she done so she would have seen that I went to the gym to see if it was possible to resign my membership there; then I sent the written notice to the Sherwood address (as per the contract) and got no response. No telephone number was given for that maildrop, but I got one from the gym, but when I called I was told that I would have to go back to the club. In the several months this was going on the club was pocketing the money debited to my account. Finally I went back to the gym--just as I did at the beginning of all of the whole affair--and my resignation was processed immediately. None of this merits the remarks "dumbed down" and "people like this." Trotting out her soi disant legal expertise is all beside the point if she fails to look at what was actually said, and chooses instead to merely be uncivil.

WOW! I agree with trethree! The contract is simple. I just went through the cancellation process at Anytime Fitness McMinnville and it went just as the contract said it would. It was simple, if charlz thinks it isn't a simple agreement then maybe there are bigger issues at work here. It is only a one page document. It is amazing to me that people sign agreements and then don't want to follow them. I work in a legal office and deal with contracts and agreements frequently. An agreement gives both parties certain rights and expectations. NEITHER of the parties can deviate from those parameters. It is so frustrating that some of the public is so dumbed down that they don't understand this simple aspect of a contract. It is what it is people, agreed terms by both parties BEFORE you sign! It is all in writing and by state law you have 3 days to review all contracts and cancel for any reason within those 3 days if you don't agree. I checked my Anytime Fitness contract and this too is mentioned in bold letters on the agreement. When I cancelled my membership Anytime Fitness did exactly what the agreement said it would do. It was what I expected because it was written in the agreement. Seeing these responses on this page does not surprise me since I deal with people like this on a weekly if not daily basis. People that just can't grasp their end of the agreed upon terms. I would bet that Anytime Fitness did the same as they did for me while dealing with these peoples cancellations but I would also bet that these people just didn't want to accept what they agreed to. In my experience Anytime Fitness followed what they promised by way of the agreement. Additionally, the facility itself was a great place to meet my fitness needs.

I have had a similar experience at the McMinnville club. My membership agreement says that the "renewel terms may be cancelled at any time kprovided a 30-day written notice is delivered to the club or by mail to [an address in Sherwood]. I joined on April 11, '08, and at the end of January '11 I went to the club to cancel my membership. I was told that they couldn't help me and that I must send the letter to Sherwood, which I did on Feb. 1, '11. I heard nothing in response, but when I found that my bank account was still being debited on Aprill 11, '11, I called the telephone number for the Seherwood office (which does not appear anywhere I could find, and which I was given by the club manager. I was told that they could do nothing for me and I would have to resign my membership at the club. I haven't yet gone back to the club, but I must say that I have a very low opinion of the business practises I have been subjected to. The contract is not a "simple agreement" as trethree suggests. The gym, itself, is nice, but I would never have joined if I had known that I would face this sort of difficulty in resigning my membership.

I have belonged to many gyms and fitness facility's in the past and am currently a member of 2 different gyms. It sounds like you did not follow the instructions on your membership agreement. All gyms and fitness centers I have ever belonged to have simple agreements that both party's agree to at the time of joining. If you don't agree with the terms of the contract then don't join the gym, otherwise you should act like an adult and follow the contract as agreed. Sounds like the gym was just doing what it agreed to do from the beginning. On a side note, I have many associates who belong to Anytime Fitness and I have only heard great things. I am thinking of dropping one of my memberships and joining Anytime for the convenience.

I had a similar experience with a tanning company in east Texas. They would not allow me to speak with the owner and wouldn't even give me her phone number. I had a friend discontinue their membership because of the way they treated me.

I'm a member of Anytime Fitness (Beaumont, CA) and I'm thankful that our owner is great! Sorry for your experience.

Gym Membership Account Charges/Cancellation

My mother purchased a 1 year membership as a Christmas Gift, she canceled and they have continued to charge her credit card. We have called, gone in person, called the corp offices. Now they are sending me invoices and I never even signed an agreement or paperwork w/them...the membership was a gift! I would never sign up w/them again nor would I recommend them to anyone.

Gym Membership ABC Financial

I made the costly mistake of joining the Fitness Edge in Stratford, CT. This company uses ABC Financial to collect their membership dues. I joined last December at one of those booths that they had set up in the Trumbull Mall. Well I should have taken the time to read their contract before I joined because they have a lot of gotcha's that they don't disclose at the time you sign up. For example: I used a debit card to pay my membership each month which was $21.20 per month and didn't have a problem for the first 9 months but then the magnetic strip on the back of the card started to fail. So I ordered a replacement card from my bank. I didn't realize at the time that they change the number on the card when they give you a new one. So when ABC tried to run the card for my monthly payment it didn't work. Instead of them giving me a call to resolve the issue I got a bill in the mail about a month later (just before my next payment was due - go figure) and they charged me:

$26.20 membership dues - somehow it jumped up $5.00 with no explanation.
$17.50 finance fee - not mentioned when I joined.
$8.00 late fee.
$51.70 Total

This was my first time missing a payment and the fees alone $30.50 were more then my regular monthly dues. That's 70% increase. I remember when loan sharking was 20% or more.

I guess the Fitness Edge is really hard up for money. I have been a member at Planet Fitness for more then 2 years. They take care of their own dues and I've never had a problem. I would recommend to anyone looking to join a gym in the Fairfield County area to avoid the Fitness Edge and join Planet Fitness. I have documentation to prove all of this if anyone needs it.

I was a member of Fitness Edge and love it. This was a $60 a month fitness facility and they lowered there rate to $21.20 saving me the customer over $400 per year. I never had any problems with the club. They are constantly adding equipment and the staff is nice. Plant Fitness is terrible.

As anyone knows, when you change your Debit or Credit card you need to notify everyone who is debiting it or it will decline. When that happens you typically would incur some sort of late charges that in most cases can be waived if you conduct yourself in a good manor. Ultimatley the biller wants to keep you as a customer.

you people need to understand how it is on the financial end i work for a financial company and the reason we dont start correspondence fpr 30 days is because the customer usually knows this and gives is the heads up. YOUR contract weither it be for bills or for a gym membership HOLDS YOU RESPONSIBLE! and its perfectly legal.

I just had the same exact problem but I had a membership with Gold's gym. Yes, I was 14 days late due to not realizing my card number wasn't the same. ABC didn't bother to call, email or send me a letter telling me there was a problem even though they had all of my contact information. I wish there was to actually take action against them.

*sigh*
