Beware of Studypool's Unfulfilled Promises: A Student's Review
Studypool is an online tutoring service that has been recently gaining attention for all the wrong reasons. As a university student myself, I was personally contacted by Alex Scott, who claimed to be the head of outreach at Studypool. He offered sponsorship for our university club. Being the student that I am, I was excited to hear about a sponsorship opportunity.
However, after researching Studypool's reputation, we discovered that they have a history of sponsoring clubs but failing to follow through on their promises. Alex Scott had told us that we would receive a financial contribution of $100 to start, with the potential for larger sponsorships in the future. However, after agreeing to their terms, we never received any payment or response.
This type of behavior is unacceptable, and it is clear that Studypool only cares about their own interests and not the well-being of students. It is important to spread awareness of this type of behavior so that other universities and clubs do not fall victim to this same trap.
While it is true that Studypool has a large number of tutors, their overall reputation and actions are not trustworthy. As students, it is important to be cautious of online services that promise too much and deliver too little. We should always rely on resources that have a solid and proven reputation.
In conclusion, I highly advise other students to exercise caution when considering Studypool as an option for online tutoring services. Their sponsorship promises are questionable at best, and it is clear that they do not genuinely care about helping students succeed. It is important to do thorough research before using any online service or platform. Do not fall prey to promises that are too good to be true.
Terrible Experience with Studypool: Fraudulent Tutoring Website with Unprofessional Practices
Wow, where do I even begin with my terrible experience with Studypool? Let me tell you, as both a tutor and a student, this platform is an absolute waste of time and money. Don't be fooled by their easy-to-join signup process- do some digging on this company before you commit to their services.
First and foremost, let me be blunt- Studypool is NOT a real tutoring website. It's essentially an essay writing website, although they'll never admit it. They dishonestly misrepresent themselves to both tutors and students, making promises they can't keep. If you're a student, you're basically paying for the same kind of service you could easily get for free on online forums like Yahoo Answers or Reddit.
Another major issue with Studypool is their lack of proper vetting for tutors. Literally anyone can become a tutor on this platform- all you need to do is write some decent application essays and voila, you're hired. There are no education or teaching credentials required, which means you're getting people who may not be qualified to tutor you. Plus, any tutor work that you do submit becomes property of the company, so they can technically use it as they please without any obligation to pay you for it.
Let's talk about the company itself for a moment. Studypool is anything but professional, honest, or reliable. They have a history of payment issues- sometimes even "losing" payments altogether. Sometimes they take payments from both tutors and students without any explanation as to why. And guess what? Their disclaimers allow them to do this legally, so you're basically at their mercy if you run into any issues.
In terms of their customer service, their online "live help" is essentially useless. They'll just cut and paste unrelated information from their website and forums without actually addressing your issue. And don't even get me started on their proper use of grammar- or lack thereof.
Overall, I've had an incredibly unprofessional and shady experience with Studypool. I borderline on considering them an outright fraudulent scam. Save yourself the headache and go to a REAL online tutoring company. Don't make the mistake I did.
My Experience as a Studypool Tutor: No Waiting for Payment, But At What Cost?
I recently decided to sign up as a tutor on Studypool, mainly due to their claim that there is no waiting period to receive payments, and that some students are willing to pay a good amount of money for a tutor to do their homework. After completing a short grammar/writing assessment, I waited for 24 hours to hear back from Studypool to find out that my application was under review. I contacted them via chat box, but instead of receiving an in-chat answer, I got an email hours later. After getting approved, I looked through the student questions. I liked how many topics there were to choose from. I had to do three "newbie" questions as a kind of assessment. The newbie questions are easier to "score" than non-newbie questions, which you have to bid on competitively against other tutors.
My first assignment was explaining Florida's child support laws (500 words, cite sources following the APA style guidelines) for $5. I finished the essay and submitted it to the student, but I got scolded by pop-up text boxes about not introducing myself to the student first and using appropriate lingo to make the student comfortable. I was urged to use gifs and emojis liberally, again, to make the student feel at ease. My second assignment was "Explain the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire" with the same style guidelines, which was also for $5. I sent the student an introductory message and finished the assignment. For the third assignment, I wrote something medical-related for $4, but it had no minimum word count. This time I did not add a message or any gifs or emojis. None of the students responded to any of my messages at all.
Although the assignments were all approved, and I was promoted to "rising star" status, I still have not received payment for the answers I wrote over a week ago. I soon realised there was something about a 20% commission rate, which means I would only receive $11.20 for over 1,000 words, which I've still yet to receive. I never received another assignment since those first three newbie questions. The students are prompted to submit a "range" they're willing to pay, and most of the questions I'm qualified to answer are in the $1-$20 range.
I found the website interface to be quite troublesome. The drop-down menu at the top right corner takes you to your profile, your tutor panel, your questions, etc. Although, your tutor panel and your questions are the same thing, and you are taken to the same page when you click either one. Your profile is a wonky-looking page with something you wrote in your application plastered to the bio section. When I once again opened the chat box to ask how I could change it, I received an email hours later, which said "you can do it through us"- that's it. I also downloaded the app, and it seems to be improved. However, they do not have a way to access your profile, which means you cannot update your bio yourself, review your tutor panel, see your messages, see your questions (past and present), or read your reviews from students. I also couldn't find anywhere - online or in the app - to view my earnings.
Overall, Studypool is an okay concept. However, I don't like the fact that I have a moral aversion to helping students cheat. I was also unwilling to partake in the "race to the bottom" that bidding on assignments consists of, so I decided not to pursue Studypool any further and instead cash out the pittance I earned. However, I was informed that I cannot withdraw my funds until I reach $50, and after emailing several different people, I realised that Studypool makes its money by advertising a service to students and offers tutors the opportunity to earn money by fulfilling that service. Tutors sign up, perform Studypool's services, the students pay Studypool, so that Studypool can pay the tutors, and Studypool keeps the money instead. I tried to escalate my claim to receive the payouts I earned, but was simply told by a bored Studypool rep that if I wanted to see the money I already earned, they suggest I continue working on the platform until I reach $50. In the meantime, they will keep my earnings. I feel like the service isn't worth the hassle or my time.
