Friend of mine was interviewing for a job. He was against 3 other people. One was his daughter-in-law. They were interviewing for a job as the Merchandising Execution Team store supervisor in store 1410 in Mt. Home, AR. Even though he was obviously more qualified than any one else interviewing he did not get the job. I dont know if he was not selected b/c he had been very sick and had been out of work for over a third of the year, or if they are guilty of ageism(which is not selecting applicant b/c of his or her age.) Home Depot has been guilty in the past of pre-selecting applicants (i know from experience) so it is no doubt in my mind that the interview does not mean JACK. They obviously had their choice from the beginning. THIS JOB INTERVIEW AND HOME DEPOT SHOULD REALLY THINK BEFORE THEY WASTE PEOPLES TIME AND EFFORTS. GIVING THEM HOPE THAT THEY'RE GONNA GET A JOB WHEN THERE IS ALREADY A PRE-SELECTED APPLICANT SHAME ON HOME DEPOT FOR ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN.

Who is to say that one person is more qualified than the next? Were you in the interview with each and every person who applied? I don't think so. I understand that it may appear that "ageism" as you put it could have been a factor, but the fact of the matter is that Home Depot may or may not hire anyone that they want. Also the job description for that position has many drawbacks for someone "older" that may become a hardship for them. The MET team is in charge of most of the resets in the store.. movement of product, movement of beams and requires some strenuous activities. I am not saying that your friend was not qualified, but maybe the hiring staff at The Home Depot felt that he was.

Saying that a company discriminates against anyone on a public forum is not the best way to handle the situation either. There are many customer service lines and HR lines available if your friend feels that he has been slighted. I would suggest he go that route if he has questions as to why he did not receive the job he applied for. Of course that is just my opinion...

Home Depot is all about the interview. it doesnt matter how qualified or unqualified the person is...if they bomb the interview, they are not going to get the job and thats just how it is. maybe you should research the way home depot works before you try to critisize one of the biggest companies in our country.

I agree with Jco626. You should know more about a company before you post such things about them on a board like this. Home Depot is like any other company, they aren't perfect, but all in all it's a good company to work for. If you compare it to most other retail businesses, you will find more happy employees than you will anywhere else.

Home Depot does not discriminate on age. I am a 53 year old woman and was just hired for the MET team.

I work for the Northern Virginia District MET. Within the team, we have an associate who is well over 60, and the old guy definitely exerts himself. Furthermore, as a team that goes from store to store, I have see numerous associates who are senior citizens. jlh281, your argument doesnt hold any water.

I was not saying that Home Depot does not hire older people, I was just saying that is there choice on who they hire. There are several older associates in the store in which I work and most of them do a fantastic job. I was just saying that it is not right to say Home Depot does not hire older people or that they would discriminate based on age.

According to SOP, if the associate can pick up and carry 50 pounds they can get the job. If a 50 year old man cant left that then they can't get the job. If a 70 year old woman CAN left that then they have a better chance to get the job then the 50 year old man. Work load is everything to the hiring MEMs of MET. If a (20 year old) kid can not handle the work load then guess what... no job on the MET. Get your head out of certain areas of your body and if you have a problem with MET call your HR rep.

Home Depot sucks! I was on the MET team for 6 months and it was the WORST job I have ever worked! You work like a dog for pennies and then when that big bonus check comes ($140 for 6 months of work whoa big DEAL!) It would be a good job for a kid in high school, but if you find yourself on the MET team and you are not in high school, I feel sorry for your career path.

I been on the MET Team for a little over 4 months and I've been with The Depot for 2 years before that as a Cashier. Yesterday was my 48th Birthday. Saying that Home Depot as a whole discriminates is untrue. There are policies and Sate and Federal Laws against that. Now, I'm not saying that it does not happen, all I am saying is that if it does it it an individual Manager doing it. Also, my Area Supervisor is turning 50 in a couple weeks and she is one of the best Supervisor's I've had ever.

If you find you don't like the MET Team any Associate can always apply for an In-Store Position, as we are Home Depot Employees.

I love my job, I'm not the type of person who liked waiting for customers to come to me, now I'm busy all day and I can see the results of my hard work at the end of the day.

How can I contact this "MET" team division? I have a little different situation. I had a friend working for Home Depot on nights stalking shelfes. She wound up on the MET team and just transfered to another store. I hear with the MET team, they are assigned multiple stores. My issue is this person skipped out on paying a loan and even though I filed a claim for small claims, it was dismissed because she could not be served. When I talked to the courts about it, I was told that because she is now living outside the state (Salt Lake City, UT), and Im in Wyoming (about 3 hrs drive ) that I would need to file a small claims against her in Utah. So, I would like to see if anyone can direct me to someone in the MET devision that I can talk to about having this girl served.

Thanks for any help.

In many cases hiring for supervisor position comes with a wage limitation. Ageism usually has no bearing on hiring. Home Depot hires many people that are advanced in years.

I've worked on the MET Team for over 2 years and have seen in my oppinion, a few people overlooked for a met supervisory position simply because other people with more supervisory experience were hired and promoted to supervisors. I thought I could keep doing a great job, winning Homer awards right and left (gold status) filling in as supervisor on occasions and it would get me somewhere. But instead, I am still a MEA and not a MEAS. I guess I beleive in seniority a little realizing that character plays a huge role in who is promoted but what happened to moving up the ladder ? I feel like some political, social bypass game is being played here and have lost my incentive to go above and beyond the call of duty anymore. I just wish Home Depot values ( if that's what they are) could take precident here namely, letting an associate progress and fulfill his job description and become promotable based on his or her aptitude and attitude. Instead it seems to have become a political/social game.

I'm working with the MET in Brandon, FL. and let me tell that I really love this job. In fact, I have a schedule from 5AM to 2PM (Monday to Friday) "FREE WEEKENDS!" and I have the enough time to share with my wife and children. Also, I'm taking classes of Pre-Medicine at evenings and I receive the support from my District Manager, Supervisors, and co-workers. Anyway, we spend more time in our workplace in comparison of the time that we share with our families...and Home Depot is our second home.

Take Care...ok!

@ billy from boston. I agree with you about how there is nothing but politics and social antics in the work place as far as its concerned towards promotions and rewards.. there is very little to gain in the HD work place and it sucks because where you can improve in one place you are automatically failing in another. Its really whack and a bs fictional world that took the place of VENDORS, that were doing their job properly, and cut the amount of money that home depot had to shell out to pay said vendors.. MET is a joke. in all fairness to people who like the job. GOOD FOR YOU. if you have a family perfect hours. but as far as a career path.. I agree with the statement METteamsucks made up above.. its a job made for people that are in school or have very low job quality expectations.. everytime I hear someone talk about professionalism in HD MET team.. it makes me laugh.. you wear JEANS to work.. a bright ORANGE shirt that might as well have been cut from a prison jumpsuit, and a homer award for doing your job! I worked with the MET team for 8 months. waste of time.. as a former REGIONAL MANAGER for LA Fitness.. THD has very little professional standard and gives two [censor] about their employees, SWEET you have SOP standards and a FULL time hour set with weekends off. WGAF. as far as the interview process goes.. no the 50 pound rule does not apply. everybody checks yes. its all about who you know and keeping the jobs towards friends and families of the associates (APRONS) at THD. so as far as im concerned a BIG FAIL to corporate propoganda to make it look amazing. and a BIG [censor] YOU to the world we know as the MET team.

@Former ASSociate. I have been an employee @ HD for 26 years. First off, you made a point of having been a REGIONAL MANAGER for LA fitness. That's hilarious that you would complain about HD. I guess the fact that you are an "X" REGIONAL MANAGER means you were an "Xcellent" employee. That's probably why you are no longer there. I'm sure you were an excellent MET also. Stop blaming and bs'n people because you couldn't cut it at either job. Also, your facts are incorrect. Home Depot does not pay vendors to service their product, the vendors pay HD. As fas as your WGAF statement, you obviously did when you were applying for a MET job. Retail is not for everyone, plain and simple! As far as moving up the ladder, that's some more of your lack of knowledge and drive to be better. You don't deserve promotions, you have to earn them. THD is far from being a perfect company, but they/we do have values and standards. I've worked in every area at the store level, and was able to progress at my desired level. I like weekends off, so I waited for a specific job to come open, and when it did, I got it because I earned it. THD has also allowed me to go to nursing school for the last 3 years and still maintain my job. Your 8 months ats a MET doesn't make you qualified to count the buggies that you should have been pushing in from the parking lot in the first place. I just graduated from school, and will eventually go to part time at THD. The bottom line is, THD strives to do the right thing by it's employees and sometimes there are bad managers...they are usually found out and fired. Remember that this is a for profit company! If you don't produce, your are not here long. The only way that THD was able to grow and succeed, is because of the balance of a well run company and the best employees money can buy, PERIOD!

P.S. GET A JOB!

Several points are discussed here.
I am currently employed by MET.
I love this job PERIOD.
although I am a felon, being truthful on my application worked in my favor, as THD gets good money from the government via tax credits for hiring my sorry [censor].
I love the fast paced environment, as keeping myself busy takes my mind off of my homocidal thoughts.
Peanuts for pay? With age and experience comes larger chunks of the pie.
So what if THD is paid $35.00 per hour for us from the vendors? giving is less than half of that is par for the course. THD pays for our uniforms, [censor] ups, insurance and mileage/travel time.
What other company would give you that?
5:am to 2:pm is a great gig; weekends FREE
PAID holidays. Sure beat the pay that I used to receive in prison @ .10 cents per hour.
Stock options are great too. Take advantage of their benefits, they are there for us to use.
For the people who like the title of having a job, but don't like the work; change jobs, the turnpike is always hiring for toll collectors.
Thank you Frank Blake, Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank. you are doing your part in keeping the streets safe and rehabilitating criminals like myself.

I am proud of the work I do with the MET team. I enjoy the job we do. I enjoy coming to work each day. Admittedly, we don't have the greatest relationships with the stores but we do try. There are alot of associates, and department heads that choose not to take an interest in what we do and they run and hide when we are in their stores and then there are the one's who do appreciate our work, understand it, and do take an interest. We do have alot of 50+ age associates on our team and I see that they put out alot more work than alot of our 20 year olds. It's a shame that the younger generation doesn't seem to work as hard as the older generations. i'm 37 and I bust my butt. I am proud of my work. When I see something selling I think about how that affects my success sharing. When I can help a customer it is a gratifying feeling. Of course my job takes place within my bays but being in those bays in between the aisles does give me a chance to help customers. I do it if i can and if I can't then I will find a store associate to help them. Alot of times store associates are hard to find when we are in their stores. I think the store managers do not schedule their asociates to work like they should when we are there. I think store managers need to understand that we need their associates to be around to help the customers so we can get our bay services done in a timely manner. But going back to the topic I think alot of 50 yr olds work 2x as hard as the 20 yr olds.

HD MET TEAM IS A SCAM. MET TEAM WAGES ARE PAID FOR BY THE VENDORS. THE MET TEAM INCEPTION WAS TO PROPERPLY PLACE AND FACE PRODUCTS THROUGH OUT THE STORE FOR EASE OF PURCHASE AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. THE MET TEAM IS TO SERVICE "X" AMOUNT OF BAYS IN A MANNER SUBSCRIBED BY CORPORATE. THE BAYS ARE TO BE LEFT IN A CERTAIN CONDITION BY EACH STORE'S DAY AND NIGHT STOCKING CREW, WHICH NEVER HAPPENS. SO THE END RESULT IS MANY VENDORS WHO ARE PAYING TO HAVE THIER PRODUCT SERVICED NEVER GET TOUCHED BECAUSE THE MET TEAM ALWAYS SEEMS TO RUN OUT OF TIME BECAUSE THEY ARE BUSY HANDLING STORE REPONSIBILITIES JUST TO GET EACH BAY HALFWAY PRESENTABLE. MET TEAM SUPERVISORS ARE AFRAID TO COMPLAIN TO THE STORE'S MANAGER OTHER WISE THE CAN BE LABELED AS "NOT EASY TO GET ALONG WITH OR NOT A TEAM PLAYER AND WILL BE FIRED OR TRANSFERRED SELLING FERTILIZER IN ALASKA. UNFORTUNATLY BECAUSE OF HD POLICY AND THE WAY THEY ARE DOING BUSINESS, THE CUSTOMER AND THE VENDOR ARE GETTING SCREWED. AS THIS EMAIL IS BEING WRITTEN THE EXECUTIVES IN ALANTA HD ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT VARIOUS WAYS OF IMPLEMENTING MORE RESPONSIBILITIES FROM EACH STORE TO THE MET TEAM AT THE VENDORS EXSPENSE. I GOT TERMINATED FROM HD MET TEAM, BECAUSE I BROUGHT UP THE ABOVE COMMENT. SO MOUCH FOR "DOING MORE FOR LESS" JUST AS LONG AS ITS AT THE VENDORS EXSPENSE.

I work for MET in NH, I have to say about 30 to 40% of our team is 50 or older so to say THD practices "ageism" is not true. Every MEM or ASM who performs inteviews knows what they are looking for in an associate and that's what they look for. Your friend obviously wasn't the most qualified plain and simple.

As a current MET team employee... I can vouch for the fact that THD DOES hire 50+. A huge issue I've seen in the 11 days as said employee is the lack of knowledge that runs rampant in my particular team. Unfortunately my supervisor is a nice guy but doesn't know squat about running a team... We pay the price for it when audits come and were questioned through the roof about stuff we have no control over. I don't know how all of this bears on the shoulders of Home Depot... Actually, like most of the complaints... It doesn't. Individuals should be held accountable for their shortcomings... End of story. I agree THD is super corporate... But that's what they are.. I guess you could say they should pay more attention to the people they put in supervisory positions... But there are always those that have their own agenda and crap people become leaders... I'm not sure if that means THD doesn't know how to run a company properly. They're not perfect... Nothing is and do their shortcomings suck sometimes when it affects you directly? Yes. But to ostracize the company as a bad one is ridiculous. I'm just grateful that I got hired somewhere making more than 8.00 an hour. The job market is crap... Without certifications or degrees, your time and hard work isn't worth much... I appreciate THD paying above average pay per hour. I need to do this myself, but it sounds like a lot of the posters above need to start looking at the big picture instead of placing blame on the biggest targets.
