In July of 2016 a pipe on an inside wall had burst and caused damage to the wall, flooring and subflooring. One of the floors was visibly warped, and the other flooring was visibly damaged.
We immediately called Universal and a plumber. The plumber came right out and repaired the pipe. After a few days, Universal sent out an adjuster. The adjuster said she could only document damage she could see, but if there was more Universal would come back. This did not happen.
Almost a month later we have to email Universal and ask what is happening with the claim. They did not answer, but finally mailed a check for the flooring only. It took almost 6 weeks to get the funds due to the fact we had to send it to the mortgage company to sign first. Several contractors specializing in water damage were contacted by us for estimates. On 10/05/2017 we sent in an estimate for water mitigation to Universal. We did not hear back. An email with the estimate was sent again on the 24th. This email stated what the contractor had told us. We asked what needed to do to proceed with the repairs. We did not hear back. On the 28th an email was sent with the estimate again. On 10/31 we FINALLY get a response from someone named Jenny Fernandez. Her response confirmed receipt of our “correspondence” and stated that our email was sent to the desk examiner assigned to our claim. It also stated that they examiner would respond accordingly. No one ever responded.
On November 10th, we once again emailed Universal asking what we needed to do to get the repairs started. I was then contacted by phone the next day. I was told that Universal denied our claim because we were negligent in not getting the repairs done. Apparently, we were supposed to try to gather the money and pay for the repairs without them sending the adjuster out again?
I filed a complaint with the state against Universal on 11/25/2017. To add insult to injury, on 12/7/2017 we received a letter of non-renewal from Universal.
We now knew that Universal had no intention of helping us. We contacted more contractors to make the repairs to the flooring, subflooring and walls. A contractor was hired and made all repairs at our expense. This was our first and only claim.
