On Tuesday 12-19-2023 my spouse and I was in the checkout line of John (cashier) and Roy (assistant). At the Costco location of 1444 South Sossaman rd. Mesa, AZ [protected]. Approximately at 5-5:30pm. My spouse was using his Costco card, and I was using our Debit card. We are both are the same Costco card membership and on debit card same last name. John refused to ring us up. I asked to speak to the manager. Jesse (supervisor) was informed by me and spouse and John the cashier what the issue was. My spouse and I was asked to go to another register to try and resolve the issue to avoid holding up the line. After explaining again everything to Jesse who was very understanding and said the situation should never went as far as it did with John. He apologized. Jesse asked if we wanted to speak with the manager because I mention I was taking this issue to the top even after speaking with them because this was serious. We did speak with Tiffany (Manager) and she was also disappointed what we experienced. John said that since my husband was using his Costco membership card, he had to use his debit card we explain and even showed him our name is on our debit card and Costco card. Still refused to check us out. I did not have my Costco membership card with me, but my husband did. John did not ask the couple in front us even though one used his Costco card, and she used her credit card. Did not refuse them service.
We feel this is a form of discrimination towards us as a male couple. We did speak a few days later when I called to speak to Mike (store Manager). He was embarrassed that this even happen. He did apologize. I would like to see this addressed at the top of upper management. We should had never experience this and this is unacceptable customer service anywhere especially at Costco. We were so upset that it bothered us all night and the rest of the week and as you can tell it still does weeks later. After speaking with Family and friends and co-workers about our disappointed experience we have decided to address it further.
We understand policies and we were not asking for policy to be broken but there are always exceptions to policy. This is beyond a policy issue it is refusing two married male couple service from your cashier. If you going to ask for us to use the same credit card and the same membership card, then you need to ask everyone.
My spouse and I would like to see a response to this complaint.
