Purchased new 320gb eide hard drive from fry's eleceronics.. Not opened or returned product! Installed and tested bad. Checked and found that the serial number on the box did not match the serial number on the unit. Model number was the same. Unable to return part to fry's to exchange or get refund. Had to call western digital three time to get to customer service. They would replace drive. But uninterested about the serial number issue. Next time I will open the box to check the se4rial numbres or get a different brand.
Very bad customer service. Seems like they are not interested in the consumer just the larger corporations.

I purchased a Western Digital External HD (WD1600) a few years ago. I recently had to reformat the drive & therefore lost the backup software which came installed on the drive. I called WD & was told that since the drive was out of warranty I'd have to purchase the backup software (Dantz Retrospect Express). I explained that as I had "purchased" the software when I purchased the drive wasn't I entitled to a free download of the software since no CD came with the drive? No.
Therefore, WARNING for those seeking to purchase an external HD; check the box to see if it contains a CD of the system software, especially if it is a Western Digital product. If it does not, DO NOT PURCHASE IT (again, especially if it is a WD product). You will get no support after 30 days, including software needed to run the product and/or its features.
Try with Retrospect web site:

They should be able to help you.
However, Western Digital lacked in credibility as the mentioned software was supplied with the external drive so you got its license too.
western digital custome service rep just hung up on me. they do not want to support their product. sorry, i will be returning to costco. bad boys western digital...
terrible customer service. just got hung up on by customer service rep. they do nto want to support their products. do not buy them.
Let me start off by saying i have had an awful lot of bad western digital drives within the past year, however western digital has made it right every time.
This past time I too purchased a 320gb ide hard drive, although mine was from best buy.
I spoke to a wd rep today about a similar problem of my drive turning up smart bad after 48hrs of use. he was very friendly and informed me theres a scam going around involving from resealed bad drives to resealed boxes with playdoh inside. He also stated that wd has a contract with best buy that states they have to take the drives back and replace them with new drives off the shelf. with that he then advised me to bring it back to best buy, after a bunch of dirty looks (and what appeared to be the person that was helping me having a conversation with every other employee about the return) i got the replacement drive i was entitled to. (hey they cant void my warranty just because other people riped them off)
They should have tamper proof break away seals or come with some type of packing tape similar to the voodoo pc tape that says "sealed with a hex" just so you cant reseal it using different tape and try to pass it off as new.
all in all i was treated as a valued customer by western digital, prior to returning the drive to best buy i was dealing with wd support. The final person i spoke to (quite high up in the company) said if best buy refused to make it right, he would see to it i received a new boxed retail drive in the mail. I give wd support a 10/10, provided you get somebody that has some athroity to help you, not just one of there powerless entry level techs that do the email support, all they said is I will receive a referb drive. i stated that was unacceptable considering i had my newly purchased drive for less then 48 hrs.
In the end best buy even let me switch the ide for a sata (could make better use of sata at this point.)
I will buy western digital in the future(because they have always stood behind there stuff when ive had a problem), however i am going to stay away from them atm as i have been having bad karma with them recently.
