I was shopping in my local Salvation Army store (East Tawas Mi), with my daughter and 2-year-old grandson. The cashier just rang up my purchase of clothing for my grandson and other items. My grandson was holding a small colorful rubber ball. This was the last item to ring up and when my daughter looked at the ball, she said there was no tag on it. I am aware of the store policy if there is no tag it has to be processed and then can be sold. This was a small rubber ball probably priced at 99 cents. The cashier then told me the policy and I understood this to be true. However, I feel this situation should have been handled with some of God's grace. My poor little grandson cried when my daughter had to take it out of his little hands. I offered to pay two dollars for the ball, I would've paid five dollars for the ball even. I don't understand why this cashier couldn't show grace and ring it up under the current processing color for the dollar amount it would be priced at. This was such a small item and I had to choke back my own tears. I felt so bad. I understand the store policies. I used to work at Goodwill as a store supervisor and I worked at Salvation army downstate as an assistant manager. The cashier told the customer before us in line that she could get this one item at 15 % off (some swing set item) even though she wasn't' supposed to do it and when the lady donated her items after to not accept the coupon. So obviously she doesn't mind bending the rules a tiny bit. I shop at this location all the time and spend so much money there and I donate so many items. Why couldn't she just ring up the ball for my grandson? It was only a dollar or two. It broke my heart to hear him cry and the ball was the perfect size for him. My daughter was visiting, and we love to shop in the store. I feel this employee a keyholder I believe, could have let me purchase the ball for the current processing color and showed us some of God's love and grace. Every time I think about my grandson having the ball taken away makes me cry. 4/26/23 at 11:28am at the east Tawas family store.
Desired outcome: I would hope small exceptions to the policy could be made when the item is so small and by a case-by-case basis. My name is Catherine Compton, [protected]@yahoo.com
