Flying Ryan Air, Bournemouth to Dublin. 20th August @ 1955. Gate closes at 1925. Flight was delayed and not due to land until 2005. Staff member (female, long dark hair, navy jacket)was asked by me why she was making customers go through into a small area to stand there for anything up to an hour. She was immediately rude and her attitude was not what I would expect from a civil question. She told me that it was Ryan Airs policy that she closes the gate at the original time. My wife then presented her driving licence as identification ( she gave this same id in Dublin for the trip out), the same staff member demanded a passport, I pointed out that in the common travel are the only requirement was photo ID, Immediately she became aggressive by saying ‘don’t tell me my job’. Her demeanour was aggressive and unhelpful. I asked to see her manager, she replied I am the manager. She then refused to board me, called for security. She spoke to security. I then spoke to security and explained what I said. The security staff member then told me she wasn’t a manager,,she was incapable of dealing with customers in a respectful manner. I returned to the desk was checked through and stood waiting to board for another 25mins. At no point of the interaction did her fellow staff members try to step in, in fact they supported her bad manners. I’ve flown in and out of airports throughout the world for over 60 years, this is the first (and hopefully the last time) I have made a complaint about a staff member. She was clearly not trained well, felt she had the right to abuse customers. If she worked for me I would immediately retrain her and place her under supervision. I would also retrain her colleagues. It was a distasteful episode that nobody should endure. As it happens, customs in Dublin explained that Ryan Air were the only airline that demanded a passport. At least we were informed by a customer focused member of staff
Desired outcome: Customer focus retraining. If an question is ask replying it’s policy isn’t sufficient. A brief explanation would suffice
