On the evening of October 19,2023 I became extremely ill. My symptoms included experiencing: shaking, vomiting, severe pain , headaches, as well as disorientation. As a result, I was rushed to George Washington Hospital Center via ambulance. The medics could not get a glucose reading , my breathing was shallow and my daughter had explained that the Dexcom had been giving me reading 53 and lower…and when she was checking on me I was incoherent and stop responding to her voice. It was apparent that something was off and she immediately dialed 911.
After arriving at George Washington University Emergency Room, the doctors immediately began to work on me. They had explained to my family that my blood work indicated that my blood sugar was around 1400. and that the priority was focusing on lowering my glucose levels. As a result of my levels and associated complications , I was placed in ICU for several days. Doctors told my family, but once my levels lowered to less than 1000, doctor’s explained to me directly that as a result of my extremely high glucose levels, I had elevated troponin (heart enzymes used as a marker of a heart attack) which is released from the heart during a heart attack. The doctor further explained that the heart attack was caused by my elevated blood sugar levels because my heart was under a lot of stress from diabetic ketoacidosis and had also decrease my kidney function.
During my two weeks of medical care, doctors took several images of my heart which showed reduced functioning, ran several blood test, assigned me to daily physical therapy sessions, oxygen, and a long list of medication just to attempt to “improve my medical status”. To say the least , I was fighting for my life !
While in the hospital, and after the medical staff , evaluated and had confirmed that the malfunctioning of Dexcom 7 had led to my near death experience, I contacted Dexcom to bring to my concerns and this matter to their attention. Once shared, the customer service provider apologized and explained that it was not my glucose meter, but in fact it was a sensor in the meter that went bad.
In conclusion albeit meter, sensor …it’s all the same to me as a consumer who uses and relies on Dexcom 7 machinery to give accurate accounting of blood sugar levels. What is clear is that , Dexcom 7 is fully accountable for the malfunctioning equipment that gave me erroneous glucose readings that resulted in my declining health, near death experience, and mental stress on me and my family. I am requesting that your company compensate me for medical malpractice, pain and suffering. Please follow up with any necessary next steps and paperwork to expedite this request for damages. Thank you in advance for your review and follow up to my request.
