Eagle Hill Equine Rescue care of the horses

Authorities have been contacted about this place before. they cant do anything, there is feed, water, and shelter. but the horses are all dying. there are not enough experienced workers to take adequate care of the horses. i have watched these horses deteriorate and drop weight like crazy. Not the mention the owner of the rescue, Annie Delp, mixes her stories about horses so that you will want to adopt them. lots of people have adopted horses and brought them back because what she said didnt match the horse. Causes of death are usually lied about. i cant stand to go anymore because its just too sad seeing all those horses going to waste.

Eagle Hill Equine Rescue Inhumane treatment of animals

This "rescue" is run by ann delp. Her efforts began legitimitely, rescuing pregnant mares used to make hormones for pharmaceutical companies. (see newspaper article here: http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2004/052004/05172004/1321870) however, the conditions of the farm, and the animals on it, have deteriorated over the years.

Now, delp obsessively focuses on rescuing foals, which are a byproduct of the racing industry. (see newspaper article here: http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2009/042009/04232009/461027) I believe the reporter who wrote this article does not know much about horses, or she would have walked out in the field to do some fact checking for herself. The conditions at eagle hill farm are atrocious. The 40 acre property holds somewhere around 150 horses, possibly more (estimates once reached 180 animals). Almost all of the fields are dirt, with no grass for grazing.

Although delp generally has a bad reputation in the fredericksburg, va horse community, local authorities have had trouble pinning anything on her. Animal control requires food, water, shelter, and necessary veterinary and other care (farrier work, for example) to be provided for animals. There are no regulations for pasture management to maintain proper forage for the animals. Also, delp has successfully evaded prosecution by pretending that animals in poor condition are recent rescues. Horses that have been at the farm for years, languishing in unacceptable conditions, are given new names and exploited for publicity. Delp shows off these "recent additions" to her herd and explains to the public that their previous owners did not take care of them and that is the reason they are in such poor shape. What everyone doesn't know is that these animals have been on delp's farm for years, unable to thrive.

Another tactic delp uses to evade trouble is to move the most underweight and despondent horses to fields off of her property. She has a free lease on two fields across the street from her farm that animal control, conveniently, doesn't know about. Lucky for delp, culpeper animal control calls her a day ahead of time and lets her know they will be coming to do a farm check. This allows for enough time for the saddest cases to be hidden away.

Horses are allowed to breed freely at this farm, and babies are born "unexpectedly" every once in a while. I suspect it is delp's irrational love of baby horses that drives her to delay geldings for years.

The following unacceptable things have been witnessed:

Horses going lame from lack of hoof care
More foals dying than being adopted
Horses dying from living in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions
More focus on bringing in new horses than adopting existing ones out
Inadequate forage (grass or hay)
Inadequite parasite managent (bot flies and worms)
Blatant disregard for animal comfort and wellbeing
Uncontrolled breeding of horses and other animals
Pollution of local water body from waste runoff
Hoarding of animals being disguised as rescue

The list could go on and on. It disgusts me that this organization is allowed to continue. Ann delp believes she can do whatever she wants to these animals because she has been, thus far, unopposed. She has lied to hundreds of people, including law enforcement officers and members of the public who genuinely care about animals. She is gratifying some personal need with her pseudo-rescue, instead of providing horses with a better home.

I beg you to do something about this. Go see for yourselves and call culpeper animal control at [protected] and let them know what you think. Call the free lance star at [protected] and tell them this should not be allowed to continue.

Please stand up to ann delp. She must not be allowed to hoard any more animals.

If any authority would like to know which horses were at the orange county location, I understand that the resident 0f such facility has records and photos of those horses, which have never been viewed by the county. Please contact me for more information. It has been understood that low body score at the main farm has been attributed to being located at the orange country facility, which may or may not be true.

Horses have evolved to do best on a natural forage diet. What nutrients does hay have that grass doesn't when hay is just dry grass? All hay is is just forage when horses can't get enouth grass. Please explain to me how hay can gain nutrients after it has "magically" transformed (dried) from grass. As I see it, the natural way is always better, with humans or animals (just as drinking a Fruit20 isn't the same as eating a piece of fruit); so, grass is nutritionally more benefitial to the horse. I have not read any research that has pointed otherwise. If studies exist, please let me know, as I am only interested in what's best for the animals.

I don't know much about the vet situation over there except that if a vet is visiting the farm, it is not the same one as before. I hope this year's foals have seen a vet. I have heard rumors that some of the younger foals have passed away, but I do not know if this is true.

I didn't go to the expo, but I think she took one of her horses there.

FBG, Because the horses don't look so "cute" anymore. And also because that would require a focus on getting the horses adopted out.

If we're thinking about the same horse, the horse at the expo was at the farm way before then. And I hope he's okay, too.

I have never been employed by Eagle Hill Equine Rescue or Ann Delp. I am merely a concerned citizen and animal lover. Statements of truth and opinion are not defamatory. I have not posted anything false, just things which are not widely known. This is America, where free speech is a right. If my complaint is offensive to Eagle Hill Equine Rescue or Ann Delp, my hope is that measures will be taken to better the lives of the animals living on the farm. Those animals are what really matter here, and my intention is to encourage Eagle Hill to improve the conditions of the horses. Putting things out in the open and raising awareness will, at least, increase scrutiny and encourage people to form their own opinions about the farm and take whatever action they see fit.

Justice has finally been given to these horses. Tho the owner continues to fantasize that she has an operation, the County advised this "rescue" has been shut down and they are no longer allowed to take in any more horses. They are only allowed to have five horses on the property. All of the remaining horses were seized and are being cared for: https://www.fredericksburg.com/news/local/culpeper-farm-surrenders-starving-horses/article_2e4d301d-2487-5b4c-aceb-810dd62cc26c.html

People here I encourage you to check into Eagle Hill Equine Rescue now. It takes a village to bring places like this back. Eagle Hill has come a long way and I would like people to come out and see that these situations have changed drastically. Eagle Hill is trying very hard to correct issues that have occurred in the past.

Regarding Luna and Teddy,
I must be starting to lose my mind because I just don't seem to remeber you ever even tearing up. In fact when you all met Teddy, it was far from tears. I also don't remeber any comments made about the no hay and water thing... (Although you did point out to me that one of our horses had a halter that was rubbing her face).
I'm sorry about Luna. It's not fair he went through that. But may I point out you were told by Jeff we didn't at that time have the money for a surgery that costly? And by adopting him you were taking responsiblity for that? (Wheater it should have been handled that way or not thats still what was told).

We don't run a 5 star barn, nor have we claimed to do so. And we really don't apprecatie it when stories are fabricated either.

Early summer of 2011, I donated some medications, leg wraps, miscellaneous horse medicines etc to this place. I cried when I drove around the farm. No water in water troughs...no hay. Horses standing in dirt fields with rocks, tiny shelters where only 3 or 4 could fit in a field of 18 or so. For those of you who don't understand the magnitude of this article. Allow me to elaborate. Picture yourself not having your snacks or your 3 square meals a day. Take away your warm house, your blankets and oh ...water or whatever that beverages are that you have daily. How does that feel? Now, imagine your neighbor beating you up over the one meal that you get each day...you get it now? I adopted a horse from this place. She did nothing but lie about his care. He had an abscessed tooth that would have cost $300 to pull...she had a dentist donating---yes d-o-n-a-t-i-n-g his services...yet the tooth had gotten so infected that the infection ate thru his jawbone and Mother Teresa( Annie Delp) did nothing...She wants to be a martyr and get handouts...Shame on any of you for visiting that farm and not doing a thing for those animals...

I have been vollunteering at eagle hill for almost a year now and I would say that I am a pretty active and loyal vollunteer there so coming from someone who actually knows what there talking about, eagle hill is a really good rescue who not only rescues horses but they even rescue people... I'm one of them a year ago I got expelled from school and got into trouble with the law and I started going to eagle hill and as I was going there annie helped me so much by getting me through my community service and just giving me lots of support in getting me back on the right track she's like a grandma to me and I have learned so much about the health and care of horses. So I am a whiteness and I am actually one of the main people who supply the feed and the hay these horses get a brand new barrel of hay every other day they are always supplied with hay in there fields and each horse is feed twice a day with more than enough food all the horses are treated equally and yes we do provide the extra attention to the horses that may need it like the
ones that are under wait or over wait or horses that need supplements this is why we have are barn and we are actually currently building a brand new barn with 4stalls for the
horses in the other side of the farm...so if you are gonna say ### about us then please
don't bother stoping by for a visit and getting your FACTS STRAIGHT!

I already noted that there has been much improvement in the last few years. Just let's admit what precipitated the changes.

Purchased and hauled to VA when every other facility in the state had to, and still has to, turn away horses already in the area and in trouble. People are begging rescues every day to take in horses in VA.
