So, I was trying to reinstall AOL, right?
So, I was trying to reinstall AOL, right? And then out of nowhere, this pop-up from a person named Beth pops up, asking if she can help me. She checked out my computer or something and told me that I had this trojan virus thingy that needed to be removed before I could proceed. She said a technician would call me to clean up my computer. Well, the technician did call, and they said they could fix everything for a grand total of $199.99. I thought, "Sure, why not?" But then I decided to call AOL just to double-check, and guess what? They told me I got scammed! Turns out, I didn't need to buy anything to download AOL. They advised me to contact my bank and the authorities. Man, I want my money back, and I never want to hear from these guys again.

I recently got a new computer and wanted to download AOL Gold. However, a message popped up saying that I wasn't eligible. Then, a chat box appeared from a person named Beth, asking about the message. She mentioned that I would receive a phone call. A technician called and requested access to my computer. They ran a report and claimed that I had a network issue. They asked if I had tried downloading a file earlier, even though I had just bought the computer thirty minutes ago. The technician then insisted that I needed a program to fix the problem. They showed me the prices and explained them, also mentioning that AOL doesn't sell these programs but can suggest where to find them. I ended up paying $349.99 and granting them access to my computer. Later, I received a call saying that the issue was resolved. Everything seemed fine until I started setting up my computer and began to doubt the situation. So, I decided to call AOL. They deleted what was installed and informed me that I had been scammed. It turns out I didn't need to purchase an SSL to download AOL. AOL advised me to contact my bank and the authorities. I want a full refund and never want to hear from them again.

Netgear Nighthawk Extender Issues with "Tech Support" contacting me for services. Felt like I was in a Hostage situation... On 09/04 I had issues with connectivity with my Netgear Nighthawk Extender. I went online and clicked on a Netgear link to see if I could get any information on a solution. A pink popup (Betty) asked if they could help me. I asked if they were with Netgear and I was told yes and asked if I would like for the tech support to call me to help me hook up my Extender. I said sure. So "Kevin" called and told me that he needed to remote into my computer to see what the problem was. I allowed this. From that moment on I was in shock and felt like I had been taken hostage. Kevin told me that my computer was infected and kept saying "that shouldn't be in there even a little bit but you have over 22,000 csrss.exe within your computer"! I asked if it was a WORM and he told me "Yes". I asked where it came from and he said "someone put it there". I said who? and he said "someone out of the country". Of course I then was told that it HAD to be removed and they offered tech services, $249.99. I gave them my credit card. I was then given to "Jason" who zipped here and there "fixing" my computer. Deleting, Opening... I couldn't keep up. I was becoming quite upset but still stayed online with him after all he was already in my computer. He told me that my computer was fine, I have McAfee but my Network was infected. I stated back to him that I had McAfee, he said it did not protect the network only the computer. I then stated the ISP has security protection doesn't it and he said No. I think I was in shock. I'm not sure who I was speaking to at the end because Jason said he was giving me back to Kevin to finish hooking up my Extender, but the person I was transferred to identified himself as Jason but with Kevin's voice. I don't think he realized he had done this. He couldn't get the Extender to work so he offered what I assumed was Netgear to send me a Repeater. I asked if it was the same Extender, he said no not that good but a Repeater would work for me. I refused. He then tried to get me to hook the Extender directly to my computer with an Ethernet cord. I couldn't find one so I was supposed to go buy one and call him in the morning to finish up. He said that I was safe to use my computer now. When we hung up because I had an uneasy feeling, with different name/same voice, I checked the phone number [protected] (the # that called me) on the internet and it had numerous scam warnings. I immediately called McAfee and they said that a remote access program had been downloaded onto my computer, they removed it and suggested I protect myself. I received phone calls from Geeks Core on 09/05 @ 2:07 pm, 09/06 @ 6:15 pm and 09/07 @ 10:38 am. I did not answer these calls. Mind you THEY are calling me, the first call was from them was from a pop up. Further this is 1) the weekend 2) a Holiday. I do not think this is normal business practice. Whatever they did or deleted I will probably never know because as I told the Geeks Core tech I am not computer savvy. But that does not mean I am stupid. I am stressed and thought someone was helping me. I read the other complaints and it sounded very familiar. That is why I am writing this complaint. I do think this is a scam. I was not looking for someone to help me with my computer or internet service. I was simply looking for information on the Extender in what I thought was a Netgear website.
