I subscribed to this companies "Build the Flying Scotsman" series, having purchased the first copy in the newsagents. I subscribed on line and opted to pay by direct debit, thought would be the easiest method. I received the first shipment - two issues, and waited for the next shipment. On the 16th Feb. 2008 I received a letter from Hachette asking for payment for the first shipment, I e-mailed them immediately advising them that I had instructed them to take payment by direct debit, and that I had their confirmation email stating this. I heard nothing so e-mailed them again on the 20th Feb., it is now 3rd March and to date I have not even had an automated reply from them.
Having read some of the comments on your site regarding this company I feel that I may never receive the issues I am missing or they will take the money and still not supply the goods. Needless to say I would NOT purchase anything from this company ever again.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I recently (As in this year) ordered magazines from them as I was unable to get issue one of the knitting magazine in the shops I was waiting over three months to recieve the package and there was no issue one so I have cancelled, am waiting on Freepost labels so I can post them back yet am still receiving letters threatening a Debt collection agency for €3.50. I wrote an email to them today threatening them with the ECC (European Consumer Centre). Hope it works! It’s the principal rather than the €3.50. I ordered online so I could receive from issue one, they agreed to cancel yet I’m being billed for a service I didn’t receive!
I have had a terrible time with Hachette Partworks, their scamming knows no bounds, I'm pulling my hair out! I 'subscribed' to the art of knitting last February, giving them a direct debit. Come may, I hadn't received a single issue, despite my £1.99 initial issue being taken. I got a few letters saying there was a delay in sending. So, I cancelled my subscription via email as the newsagents had issue 6 and I hadn't even had issue 2! I then start getting letters demanding money for the issues etc! I never received ANY, AND the're the ones who took money from me! The've now passed it onto a debt collection agency, but no matter how many times I write/email, I still get debt collection letters! I simply can't get s bad credit rating as I'm trying to buy my first house next year...
I really don't know what to do, and it angers me that something like this is happening, when financially I'm very responsible. Grr!
It's terrible that a company like this exists in the credit crunch when there are so many lovely businesses with incredible customer service that fail!
My boyfriend's half tempted just to pay the debt collection fee just to get rid of the problem as we're both incredibly busy and really can't risk a bad credit rating.
Don't worry, I told them I was sequestrated and they still demanded payment until my Trustee got hold of them! Useless, ignorant ####.
OMG, i should have checked this website before i ordered anything from Hachette, they are really cheaters. initially it was £1.99 per month and after about 6 issues all of a sudden it went up to £11.99, having no received any issues they are sending letter to me to pay and if not the matter will be passed to a debt collection agency, i tried to contact them via email so many times, but there was no reply back from them. tried their 0871 premium number a few times and no one seems to talk but its connecting and i was charged 0.18/ minute, i was wondering if i can take them to court.

Similar problem, tried to pay bill for a Marvel subscription, cannot get through on phone calls, in total so far been on hold for 30 minutes, obviously gave up and attempted to email, no reply, details sent to debt collection agency and a random five pound fee attached on top. Wrote to local newspaper, awful company, wrecking peoples credit.
I too have been having problems. I subscribed to The Art of Quilting, and after 8 or so issues, decided to cancel. I tried to email them, but the address on my letter from them bounced, so I contacted them via their website. I received no reply.
Around that time, my debit card changed, so they sent the next parcel (despite the fact I'd cancelled) and were unable to get payment as the card was now invalid. Several months later, I received a letter telling me to pay up or they'd add £5 to the bill and pass it on to a debt collection agency. I called them, explained that it was their mistake (expecting to be told not to worry about it and have an apology on the phone). They told me to either pay or return the items. I asked for a pre-paid envelope to be sent so I could return the items. They sent me an address, but not packaging. I didn't have anything large enough to post it in, and had no intention of buying something special when they had said they would send something, so waited till I received a large box from Amazon and returned the items to them. (I have proof of postage). Two weeks later, they sent another letter, telling me they were now passing on the details to a debt collection agency. I called them today, and told them I'd sent the box nearly 3 weeks ago. They said it could take up to 28 days to process returns, and asked me to call back in two weeks.
How the heck does it take 4 weeks to open a box, and match of the stuff on their files?! I would suspect Amazon deal with more returns, and do so much more efficiently! Issue is still unresolved, but could/would they seriously take me to court for £21?!
Don't be bullied by this rubbish lot. Of course they won't take you to court for that amount of money. I had the same with them for £20. Ignore them - they're scammers. Just report them on to Trading Standards immediately so that they can get dealt with properly once and for all!
Hi have also similar problem. I have bought the flying Scotman and that i need back issues so i have rang them in November 2011. I purchased the back issues that i need and that i still haven't received a response. I have spoken to hachette a number of times. all i get is that they are on order and where due May this year. But i still haven't heard a thing i have emailed but no reply. So i am still try to get the three issues parts 29, 74.106 still no refund or partworks.
Ebay is the place to watch there's some things available now.
Theya are the worst customer service department I have ever come across. I ordered the art of quilting off hachette and they set up two accounts for me! It took me until I received the first issue to realise this so I rang and cancelled one of the accounts. I had already payed by direct debit (which I had not authorised may I add) for the first issue, this was only 99p so I left it. A couple of weeks after I cancelled, I received the next issues and a folder in the post twice again. I phoned them and got hung up on and emailed them which it took weeks for them to reply to. Eventually I got letters from a debt collection agency saying they were going to take me to court for £27.
I rang the customer service department again and the woman was very rude and I ended up ringing the debt collection agency who at the moment are supposedly sorting out my query of the debt. Hachette can have their magazines back, I don't want them I have just never spoken to such an uninterested and rude customer service department and will never use them again
Gosh, I wish I had read this earlier. I had a subscription to a Classic Pocketwatches magazine for my grandfather. He decided that it wasn't really for him so I cancelled in January. I then received a letter last week saying that there was a payment due - my card had actually expired around the time of cancellation so I thought I may have missed a payment.
I went to saynoto0870 and the alternative number I called was for a London office. She said I had come through to the wrong company so I resigned myself to the 10p a min line and got through to - I think - South Africa. I didn't feel comfortable giving my card details but was told it was my only payment option. The lady I spoke to refused to give me email confirmation of payment, and I don't like not having written records of transactions. I'm thinking I may need to cancel my card ASAP.
Cancel it immediately. Scammers!
God I thought I was the only one. I ordered the art of crochet magazines as it was easier as my local newsagents only sold up the number six. I'm now into the 20's on it and had some trouble. I told then I wanted to pay by direct debit but was told that was not an opinion for me as I love in Ireland. So I told them I would pay through the website I paid the outstanding balance on my account and awaited my next order which according to the website was dispatched on the 15/06/2013. I received an order yesterday 23/07/2013 which was not the right one the have sent me
The ones after the order I am waiting on. They are trying the bill me for the order I never received I have sent three emails with no response yet and have tried ringing there Irish helpline which I can't get through to as it keeps telling me this number cannot accept the call. What is there game? I will pay for the order I got yesterday but unless I get the other order I am not paying for it. Wish I had of just ordered thru my newsagents now.
Oh dear they just don't seem to get any better either i this year 2013 signed up for the peppea pig make and bake for my little girl whos 3, first 2 issues i ordered came out fine and payment went out ok, my next 2 issues never came i rang up was told there had been a shortage and that they would be out asap in which they did, next 2 issues never came rang up said sorry they would be sent out asap in which they did but missing my free gifts had to ring up again, plus i was now behind on the issues by this point so asked where my next ones were she told me they would be posted on the 12th july 3 weeks later they still hadn't arrived so i rang again asking where they were to find that the issues hadn't even been allocated to me so i had been lied to, i asked to speak to a manager i was now disscused with the service to be lied to again the gentleman who took my call gave me his name but when i asked if he was a manager said no im a senior consultant why on earth did he never start the conversation with me to start with that he was a senior consultant a manager was not avaliable could he help?. This person told me and emailed me that he was very sorry and that my issues will be posted asap and that my account would run smoothly from here. How wrong was he, i went to do my shopping this weekend just gone (Aug 3rd 2013) issue 12 is on the shelf i haven't even had 8, 9, 10, 11 plus my last free gift so i rang on monday asking why i was so behind to be told by a so called manager as i doubt very much she was that my next issues 8, 9 will be posted on the 12th Aug 2013 and then every 12th after that my next ones and so on meaning my account was now going to run several months behind what it actually should be and there was nothing she could do about it. I then decided in this phone call enough is enough they don't seem to care that this is appauling customer service and that i have a very disapointed 3 yr old at home as when i go shopping she asks everytime for it i tell her the postman brings hers yet the postman isnt as the company simply are not holding up what i signed up for!. 3 times i had to ask for my account to be cancelled as she just ignored my request until i asked her why she was not canceling it. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO READ THIS BEFORE YOU SUBSCRIBE STAY WELL AWAY!
I subscribed to peppa pig for my son this year(2013). After issue 8 I phoned & cancelled the subscription with hatchette & my bank. The problem was they kept sending the magazines. Again I called to tell them to stop and the account was closed. 3 months later in October this year I've had a letter from them telling me I owe £31.95 with £5 admin costs & the account had been passed to their debt collection agency. I'm gutted. I stopped the subscription in June and because they were unable to take money from my card as I'd informed my bank they had cash invoiced me for magazines I didn't want. Please someone help... Phil
customer services is non existent, they do not respond to any questions or requests. I believe something should be done about it, BBC Watchdog comes to mind maybe then we would find out whats going on.

I subscribed to the Black Pearl Partwork some weeks ago I received parts 3&4 but nothing since. Emailing them is a waste of time as they do not reply. At £700.00 + per subscriptionithought they would be more customer friendly. There are members of the Partworks Forum who have had similar problems.I am seriously considering cancelling unless I hear from them in the next 7 days.
I have never had a problem with these people. I am currently collecting big and little knitting projects and receive my issues on time. I only pay when I receive them! Really happy with service. I hope I'm not tempting fate by writing on this page! Lol x
Twice received wrong magazine issue 23 twice sent back last magazine received wasnumber 29 yet youre still taking payments ? Subscriber number is sto48280/03
I have had an ongoing complain against Hachette since February this year. They incorrectly amended my invoice for monthly Disney's books from £8.97 to £17.94. After phoning half-way around the world and a 20 minute plus phone-call at my expense, the point I was trying to make had not made any inroads and the company representative said one months payment had been returned. I told him that this was impossible as I have a Debit card only and no payments had been returned. A second phone-call made left me having to send them proof that no payments had been returned by sending in 6 months of bank statements. Today, after 3 more e-mails where I have asked for this matter to be investigated and confirmation sent that my balance will be 0-1 months worth of books, they have sent this.. Dear Mrs James
Thank you for your email.

WHAT MORE CAN I DO?
Like many of the above, I too ordered items from Hackets Partworks Ltd. After several issues I noted that the items I was paying for increasingly worsened and were of very poor quality. I cancelled my subscription in August 2014 but a month later I received yet another issue of pocket watches. I contacted Hackets and informed them that I had cancelled my subscription and they instructed me to return the items to an address they provided on a free post address. I did so and received an email a few days later confirming reciept and i thought the matter closed. In March 2015 I received a threatening letter from a debt collection firm call CCS Collection demanding payment or they will seized goods from my home. I contacted CCS and explained their clients had made a mistake and the items were returned at their request to an address they supplied. CCS blatantly called me a liar and a con artist and said if they have to they will force entry to take my goods with or without a court order.
I fully agree with everything I have read in regards to this company. It is they who are the con artist and are using bully boy tactics for force payments for they clearly do not provide.
They are vile. I have had horrid dealings with this treacherous company. Report them to every business support organisation you can as I am and also to the Police.
I have just as issues with hatchet after subscribing to their art therapy series. They set up 2 accounts in different names. They said one had been cancelled. Today I received eventually the first issue with all the promised bits and pieces missing, twice one for each account. Covering letter said supplies were low and all items would be despatched when available. Direct debit to be taken for both accounts in two weeks time. Contacted customer services to cancel both subscriptions they never apologised and were very condescending. They promised to send me a letter of confirmation within 10 working days confirming this. I will wait and see. Please stay away it is not as promised.
I have learned through investigations that Hackets Partworks Ltd is owned by a French company and the address given on their website and letters is little more than a mail drop with the mail being collected once a week. This company has had numerous complaints made against it throughout Europe dating back to 2001 but because the company is French owned the UK Trading Standards have little authority to act against them.
I have further learned that the debt collection company's employed by Hackets Partworks Ltd have also been reported on numerous occasions for threatening behaviour when collecting debts on behalf of Hackets.
Having read all of the above appalling accounts of abuse and poor service being provided by Hackets and the tactics they employ to fraudulently make money from its customers and listening to hundreds of accounts from customers who have lost money due to their trading practices it is my intention to collect all the details and records concerning this company and force the issue into the Courts to stop them trading and to bring them to account for their criminal actions.
With this view in mind I would invite any and all customers of Hackets Partworks Ltd both past and present to contact me with details of their experiences so that I may be able to produce a file for legal action with the intention of having money unlawfully collected by this company returned to the customers concerned.
I can be contacted by email a tony.kerry12@ntlworld.com. Please note that NO charge will be made for this service.
Signed..Tony Kerry
Hi Tony, I'm liaising with you privately by e-mail so that we can take this company head-on.
Dear Tony, I as so many others have had a nightmare with Hachette Partworks Ltd. I originally signed up to 12 issues of Art Therapy - a gift for a friend who was giving up smoking, I had no idea Hatchette Partworks were any way involved with Art Therapy and I did not sign up for any subscription, I made a one off payment for 12 issues and that was that as far as I was concerned. I received an email from hachettepw@jacklinservice.com on the 26/09/2015 welcoming me and confirming my account had been set up. I was totally confused & a little bit angry! I had not opened/set up an account or requested one! The email stated I could access my account and manage my subscriptions via the online account they seemingly had set up without my knowledge! So I thought OK I'll just sign in and cancel it; but of course with these crooks this was not possible! When I attempted to access the site it wasn't there, a message displayed that there was a NET error and the CERT had been revoked. I then replied to their email telling them I could not access their site, that I did not wish to subscribe further & that I had not indicated to them in any way that this was the case and that they should not continue to take payments as I had not agreed to this. I then continually tried every week without success to contact them by phone to no avail. Months went by I was so sick of it I can't recall how long but eventually their site came online. Finally, great I thought; but NO of course I could not enter the site as it would not accept my subscriber number they had issued me with. (I see recently their site format has changed again). I eventually in April 2016 went to my bank providing copies of my emails and print out of your above message amongst others, and reclaimed some of the money they shouldn't have taken from me and cancelled any further payments. Thinking that was that I was happy it was all over. Alas No! 2 years on and out of the blue I have this week received an email and letter from CCSCollect demanding money on behalf of their client Hachette Artworks Ltd. I am at a loss as what to do next!? This whole issue has hung over me for 2 years, I suffer with mental health issues and this is again sending my anxiety levels up and up, so much I'm physically being sick.
I'm guessing you receive many messages like mine and I'm so sorry to burden you with another moaning email, any advice would be much appreciated as now I'm nervously a prisoner in my home awaiting CCSCollect to rear their ugly selves at my door.
yours sincerely Ali Goulding, ali.g.torquay@talktalk.net
Report both Hachette and CCScollect to trading standards. Bailiffs DO NOT have any right to enter your home without permission of the courts, and if anyone should turn up on your doorstep, leave them standing there while you call the court they claim to have the order from.
I am frustrated by this company. I subscribed to Art Therapy after picking up Issue 1 in a newsagent. I wanted to make sure I got each issue, but shortly after subscribing I received an email telling me that demand was high and I wouldn't be receiving the four issues a month I was initially promised, but two, and maybe not in order. Sure enough, I received issues 2 and 3, then 4 and 5 then 8 and 9, with one free gift missing too. I have looked on their website, and my missing issues, plus where I should be up to, are all available to buy there and then. I emailed them about this and did receive a reply, but it didn't address the issues I had raised, namely why my issues were so behind when they were available to buy on the website, or why they couldn't start supplying me with the four a month I had been initially promised. I emailed again asking for my questions to be answered, but their second reply still did not address the issues. I have only been billed for what I have received, but am wary about how they will handle me cancelling my subscription which I will be doing shortly.
I agree entirely with what you say - absolute SCAMMERS!
I have been building Hachette's Part Works U96 Submarine and Mallard Engine due to problems with having copies pulled by my Newsagents supplier WH Smith, I thought that contacting Hachette by E-Mail possibly 5 times Phone, several times, Letter once and a Recorded Letter I would have received a reply but looking at the correspondence this company has had over the years I do not know how they have remained in business, I thought it was WH Smith was the problem but it looks as though the problem is not theirs but their supplier Hachette Ltd., if this is the case how does one proceed with obtaining a satisfactory outcome
Report them to Trading Standards - they are threatening, vile and abusive crooks!
Seems like my wife and I've also got trapped in this Hachette Partworks scam. We never subscribed or said yes for any books but they sent some Disney books for our little one to arrive in few months. And followed by that they are asking to pay for them. We returned the books to their mailbox (fortunately it had free postage), though may not have been in their 14 days period. Now getting letters from their litigation department that our payment is transferred to Debt collection agency. Has anyone managed to get on top of these scamsters? Tony Kerry - (tony.kerry12@ntlworld.com) - did you manage to make any progress? I'm happy to provide our account if it helps the case.
Tony, I have not. I have had the same experience with them with Art of Knitting. Debiting my account with books I never ordered nor subscribed to. I think the Police should get involved. I am happy for you to contact me on jackiaston@outlook.com
AVOID the hackets partworks. SCAMMERS!.They would give out vouchers to expectant mothers and ask you to keep some books and send the others back to them. They will never acknowledge receipt of books and they will start threatening you with forceful collection of debts. They are simply taking advantage of people in a very disgusting way.
Justabout sums them up - look at the threatening e-mails they send from judge dredd. I'm shaking in my boots - NOT!
What a headache. Cancelled my subscription to Judge Dredd as found them cheaper elsewhere. Whilst I was away, I received four more copies AFTER cancelling which i didn't know until I got back and started to receive the letters demanding payment. I tried calling several times - either terrible line, or I get hung up on or no answer. Sent emails (which get answered 5-8 days later) asking them to let me back in my account on their website (which no longer shows up any of my subscription information) so that I can see for myself when I cancelled and when the copies were sent out. Each response from them did not address my question but instead answered a question I didn't ask?! Now they have the debt collection agency on me without addressing my questions (I would have paid or returned the goods if I was mistaken but no answer to my question was given). Told the agency to hold off until I resolve this - they've given me 14 days yet Hatchette still not responding to my questions (yet writing back with stuff that doesn't make too much sense). I don't know who to turn to for help as the Debt collection agency will be calling me again and Hatchette not being cooperative. Extremely bad customer service and impolite staff.
Absolutely appalling - I'll rate them everywhere I can!
As of this moment, I have been on hold to their "customer services" for 1 hour 17 minutes (and still waiting) with no answer. I am trying to ensure that they do not send any more books from the Wonderful World of Disney collection.
Their non-existent customer services suggests that this is not a legitimate business.
Agreed 100%
I cannot believe from reading these emails how many complaints this company has and they still have not improved their customers service, surely they should be held to task - I have tried to get the email address of the CEO of this company to include him in an email I am sending to complain and guess what there is not one. I have paid £13.95 for 4 issues - usually I get them through my news agent but my fault I lost them. After 4 weeks no mags but money in my bank no longer there. When I telephoned them, quoted the order no - they never heard of me or my order. Funny that I said you took my money - after much ado and a lot of shouting - had to give my post code 7 times before I was understood - I was told it will take another 2 weeks - I blew a fuse demanded to speak to a manager eventually got one I told her I was not happy about another 2 weeks wait and suggested in the interest of good customer service guaranteed next day delivery was the only route to take. Was promised this and guess what - still not got them but I did get an email today saying 'oh we found your order; and it will take another 2 weeks to come' Not good enough because where was my money put and what would have happened to it if I had not of complained. I am a book keeper and have to account for all money coming in and goods going out this is called reconcillation. - Who is the company's accountant and how are these books reconcilled? Oh I did state this to the Manager so I am not talking behind anyones back.
Whole heartedly agree they are very very poorly organised & are overly reliant on customer self service.
Ordered a series of books from them late in the print, purchased the missing parts at extra cost to myself only to be told the fineprint of the deal means the special subscription offer only applies to subscrbers who engaged in the first week.
I have never heard of this company before but the have been taking money out my bank account on an old card for 5 months! just been given a refund via bank and they are looking into it.. STAY AWAY FROM HATCHETTE PARTWORKS!
The Police should be contacted as they are fraudulent crooks who need to be brought down.
I have had no issues at all with this company and feel it only fair I should say so, I have had multiple subscriptions and anytime they had a delay in supplying an issue due to demand for that issue or issues we were given a free gift which was of the same nature as the subscription we were paying for.
On the rare occasion I needed to speak to customer service I got through immediately and I was dealt with in a professional manner, I am sorry that some of you have had unpleasant experiences but that is not the experience I have had .
Hachette are still up to the tricks above!
I have not had anything from them since September, leaving me with a half complete collection and now a threat of debt collectors!
they are nothing but a bunch of legalised con artists!
I doubt if they are even legalised! One man show and a crook at that!
I had a great experience with the Black Pearl set. I presume as a French company they are not just taunting you, but also farting in your general direction. Go and boil your bottoms lest they taunt you a second time.
I am not a subscriber but have made several one-off orders from this questionable outfit, as I wanted to collect the volumes of Doctor Who The Complete History covering the 1960s and 1970s only. Quite simply, more often than not, they have not sent my orders, leading to a series of Emails and phone calls to an overseas call centre, which have resulted in my being constantly lied to until the books are eventually sent or I receive a refund. The books are difficult to obtain elsewhere, but the way things are going I will probably only finally complete my modest collection when I am an old man at a car boot sale!
Utter cowboys.
I know exactly how you feel.
You are within your consumer rights to file a complaint with the financial ombudsman if its 8 or more weeks from your original order (if you're based in the UK) & if they owe you money file a report with action fraud & forward on the crime reference number to Hachette via email.
If you paid by PayPal you can file a claim via them for up to 3 months or more after payment (it does take around 45 days to get a refund)
Or contact your Bank or Credit Card Company & file a chargeback for failure to provide goods or services.

I have been in touch with Hachette customer services department on numerous occasions via the telephone, email & now by letter concerning missing orders I have via their UK based website shop.
Thier business now owes me a great deal of money from ether missing items or failures to make promised refunds for items their customer services department are claiming are out of stock, these are for fact items that they still at this time of writing shave on sale in your website shop.
I find the contempt their business has to its customers beyond unacceptable, it is unacceptable for any business to fail to even bother to contact their customer over missing items or refund money for items that are out of stock.
I have been lied to by their customer services colleagues & managers about receiving return calls, ether refunds or being sent missing orders on many occasions now.
I have written to them, emailed them & told them over the telephone that any future failure to respond to me will result in the following actions being taken against their business:
I will file a complaint with the UK Financial Ombudsman on their businesses fraudulent behaviour.
I will file out and report to Action Fraud for theft & provide them with a crime reference number.
I will take legal advice if they do not respond to me.
IT's strange that "Companies" of this ilk are not highlighted on BBC programs like "Watchdog" "Rogue Traders" "Rip off Britain" are the BBC and the Authorities scared of these types of companies? if so! Why?
My name is Laurence Leviton. My account number is [protected]. My home address is 7 Tubby Swingler Close, Onrus 7201 South Africa. The product ordered is the Routemaster bus. My mobile number is +[protected].
Your squares issue 2 do not measure correctly nor does the instructions you give also you have no proper complaints department or any one to advise its probably easier to ask trading standards to sort
I have been collecting the terminator build magazines on a monthly basis. I was missing issue 27 so I got 3 magazines and a note saying I will receive issue 27 shortly a month on still nothing.
Tried ringing number with no joy. Same for emails what a waste of time they are a con.
I too took out a subscription for the Flying Scotsman, & managed to get to issue12, then nothing. When contacting customer services, they could not offer an explanation. Have had this happen many times with other models. These bad experiences have now put me off ever building any more models, ( something which I got a lot of pleasure from).
Communication is very slow, but once i received first order all was fine, was in hospital for a month, and the received very badly worded aggressive and rude letter for not paying on time. emailed to state my situation, no reply. paid off out standing amount and cancelled my subscription, very poor service, avoid
