I am reporting this information to you in an attempt to make justice happen with the online university who did this to me.
My story starts in 2006 when I signed up for online classes with Kaplan University. I wanted to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies. I attended one semester, received two textbooks, and started my journey of attaining my online degree.
Halfway through the semester, I realized that this educational opportunity was not for me. The classes were too fast for my understanding and I was falling way behind. I was doing very poorly and did not think this was the right course for me. I did not attend classes for the next semester, nor did I ever receive any other textbooks or materials.
After a while, the representative at Kaplan University contacted me and asked if I would like to attend another semester. I was talked into continuing for one more semester, taking two classes. I stopped showing up for classes online after a few weeks and told them to drop me from the school.
During this time, I got married and moved away.
Several years later, I was working for a now-former employer of mine, who notified me that there was a wage garnishment issued for me. I was shocked and had no idea who this creditor was. I found out that Kaplan University charged the federal system $25, 000.00 for my “education” and turned it over to the U.S. Government. I now owed over $35, 000 with all the fees and interest, and should I fail to pay I will have my wages garnished.
Needing the money, I continued working for a few more months while I tried to figure out what I can do about this defaulted student loan. Finding out that there is almost nothing I can do about it, I quit my job. I had no choice – such a large portion of my already small wages were being garnished that I simply could not continue working for that salary.
Since then, EdFund notified me that in order to stop legal proceeding such as wage garnishments, I must get my loan back to a good standing. So I was making payments for 9 months in the amount of $267.00 in order to prevent legal repercussions.
However, I now owe close to $40, 000, do not have my degree, and all this for one or two semesters and two textbooks. Something here is not right: Kaplan University used illegal, immoral, and fraudulent tactics to collect this money from the Federal Government, and from me. In my research into this matter, I learned that there are many others who they have done this to and I will be looking into a class action suit. Kaplan University committed fraud – plain and simple. How else can they justify getting paid $25, 000 for one student for less than two semesters and for 2 textbooks?
I tried to resolve the matter with Kaplan University first. I contacted them, and they were not very helpful. I asked to see the information on my education, and they sent me some forms over that were very complicated and had a bunch of bogus fees on there – for example, Internet Fee $1, 600 – that they just created.
I certainly believe in paying for my education and have always done so in the past. But there is no way that Kaplan University deserves the amount of money that they are charging me.
Let’s be honest: I am 32 years old and worked as a salaried employee my whole life. The chances of me ever paying this loan off are very slim. So I will be in debt likely for the rest of my life over something that was based on a lie.
Also, the saddest part of all this is that I still did not finish my education, and with the amount of money I now owe, I simply cannot continue my education at all.
I am looking to pursue this matter to the full extent of the law. I have so much to lose, and so much I have already lost: my credit is destroyed, and the stress of this matter has caused me a deep depression. I am pleading for help on this issue. I want justice to be done so that Kaplan University does not continue to turn students into victims.

I also attended Kaplan from [protected]; i couldn't finish due to so many problems that occurred with them, including with the financial aide and troubled teachers; I actually had a male teacher IM harassing me, very unethical. The complaint with the teacher was brought forward and I won that case, but as for my charges, I'm at a lost for words. I was told from the beginning that it would cost me $25, 000 firm, but so far I'm in over $35, 000, they state it was because I didn't graduate from one of my classes on time and because tuition had increased...and then I had to undergo surgery, which for some reason caused them great distress, because they didn't want to draw out the papers for me that I would be a student later returning to her studies. While I was recovering from surgery I got multiple phone calls from them claiming I was a current student who owed them money; it took about the 3rd phone call that they finally got it straight and then after I had recovered and tried returning to the school, they want another $5, 000 to finish! I can't finish the school now. This school is a complete joke. If anyone reading this comments wants me to paste my complaint letter to the school, I will gladly paste it up here

iam a victim of kaplan as well. they say i owe 30, 000 for a couple of classes i had taken. i gained nothing from this so called university. the only reason why the call themselves a university is so that they can charge u more money for the classes. any way, they are threatening to garnish my wages as well i dont know what to do either. their is simply no way i can pay them almost 500 a month .we need to do something about this so it stops!

I am in the same boat with the rest of you. I am at a point where I have decided to have my attorney look into this to see what can be done.

Kaplan is also trying to clean me out (to the tune of over $40, 000). I was enrolled in the Business program in pursuit of my Bachelor's and doing well for about a year - Dean's List, Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society, etc. I really didn't have much to complain about. My turmoil began at the beginning of my second year. I have 2 special needs children and was suffering from health issues. I explained to my Advisor and all of my Professors that I would have to withdrawal because of these issues. I was in the process of a huge legal case with my son and surgery bound at the same time. It was just too much.

I withdrew and filed deferments ever year with the school in order to have time to financially recover from my legal and medical issues, as I was not working at the time. I was told when filing these so-called "deferments" that the payments would be based on the amount of time I was enrolled and attending - NOT the overall cost of the program to completion! Now, 4 years later, they are threatening to attach my wages and proceed with legal action. Now, I'm no martyr, but my first thought was, "Haven't I suffered enough?"...

If anyone has any idea on how to resolve this without causing further detriment - I am all ears!

Wow, If I knew then what I know now. I would have NEVER given Kaplan a second glance now 35000.00 plus 4000.00 they say I still owe and did not receive my diploma in the mail. oh and let me add my credit mean nothing to other universities. I am for the rest of my life with this debt that I cannot afford. I hope something is done about this "University" no one should be going through all this BS to have an education.

Well, i am currently a student and i am withdrawing at the end of my semester which is done in two weeks. After reading everything on the internet i must say i am truely scared. When i withdrawl i plan on having email stating that i am withdrawled and also i am calling and recording it. I have already talked to Salley Mae where i now owe 3134 in loans that i told them to never take out. Which they did anyways. So that is why i am withdrawing. Please pray for me everyone. I am 32 and my credit has been crap since i was 17. It is now great and i am living on disability. I am vision impaired and now have to work a 19 dollar an hour job to pay this sh^^ off. anyways, i will keep u all updated!Good luck!

It happened the same with me. I attended one semester and could not continue because they were asking me to pay the fees so I dropped of just to realize later that Kaplan continued to get my student financial without my consent for the next two years. Now I owe over $10 K - They are a SCAM university and their diploma worth nothing...
