false promises, inadequate education
In the year 2001 I was working customer service at a telephone company, living on the bad side of town and just making ends meet. I became disenchanted with my life and decided that I wanted to persue higher education to better myself and my position. After some thought and research I decided that a technical school would probably better suit my needs as I was going to have to continue to work full time in order to pay my rent and bills. I headed over to my local ITT Technical Institute and spoke with a recruiter regarding my desire to educate myself and dreams of inproving my station in life. I must say, he was good at his job, I left his office that day feeling like I had all the answers to my future right there in my hand. If I remember correctly he was a former Air Force recruiter. Looking back now I realize how innocent and naive I was. My father helped me by taking out a personal loan in his name and I signed up for federal loans as well to cover the tuition for the next two years. I walked in interested in going through the CAD (drafting) Program but somehow the recruiter talked me into signing up for the BRAND NEW Multimedia program that was going to be starting next September. I was thrilled, for the first time in my life I felt like I was on the right track. I was determined to do everything it took and devote all my spare time to my studies. I began classes that sept. They started out with some general education type classes and some basic computer classes. Right away I thought their classes didn't cover nearly enough and some of the instructors only role was to assign pages in a book which was a bit discouraging, but I was still determined and fooled into believing my education would be what I make of it. I continued this for two quarters and then in my 3rd quarter I was unable to fool myself any longer. We were supposed to be taking a Trig class, which I was terrified of because I had not completed any higher than Geometry in high school, we spent the entire length of the course reviewing Algebra. That was the first thing that sent up a red flag in my mind and I began to really look at the education I was receiving. I was having more and more of a hard time with the instructors and their lack of knowledge in the areas they were teaching, it was common when you asked an intructor for assistance to have him referring to his book and trying to look up the answer with you. It became more and more apparent that most of the instructors were in no way qualified to teach the subjects. This was the quarter that we were supposed to begin our 3d MAx class and because the school had not found anybody to teach the class they had a CAD teacher fill in as our instructor. He knew absolutely NOTHING about 3d Max, he literally assigned us pages in the book and could not answer any questions regarding the program. We spend most of the time desperately trying to figure out the projects on our own time. I met with other students several times a week trying to complete our assignments in the lab. Probably the most appalling incident that occurred while I attended was in my Visual Basic class. I was one student in a class of about 40. The instructor was a sweet man and worked in the field as a programmer. The problem was not that he didn't have the knowledge base but that he did not know how to adequately teach. I had never really thought about the ability to teach people as being a skill until well into my visual basic class. towards the end of the quarter everyone in the class was failing but 2 students. The director came in and lectured us all on how his teen son was taking U.S. robotics and passing with an A but we all couldn't pass a visual basic class. It's always nice to have the director of a school you are paying tens of thousands of dollars to attend imply that your entire class and you are idiots. At the end of his demeaning lecture he proceded to tell us that we would all be passed with A's! It was bad enough that we were being insulted but to not adequately teach us the subject matter in which we are paying thousands of dollars to learn and then to turn it around and act like you are doing us a FAVOR by passing us? That is proposterus. I was enraged and appalled that I was paying these people to talk to me like a child and blame me for the schools inadequacies. That quarter was wrapping up and the next about to start. I was excited to begin the next quarter because most of my classes were now going to be multimedia specific, I asked the director about the instructors and what type of field experience they had. He stumbled around trying to answer before I realized that they had not yet found any instructors for the multimedia classes that were to begin in a week! I continued still having a sliver of faith that they would work it out and things would improve, after all we were all paying thousands to attend. The next quarter was the worst by far and my last days at ITT Tech. The very first day we had trouble getting our books, some of them had not come in yet and would not be in for a couple weeks. I went into my 2nd 3d max class which they had found an instructor for named Mr. Burgess. He claimed to work in the field and showed us a very limited portfolio of images etc. but when we asked him simple questions he was unable to answer them so I have my doubts about the ligitimacy of his claims. He was hands down the worst instructor I have ever seen, he was a nervous mess. I felt sorry for him. You could see the sweat pouring off of his head as he stood in front of the room. He stuttered and didn't make eye contact. He constantly made errors when trying to explain assignments. The class was supposed to be a lab class but we were still in a classroom, they were still setting up the lab. Within the next week they moved our classroom to the lab. I will never forget that day, the very last day I attended ITT. I walked into school after having worked all day, I was just on time and found my way to the lab. I walked in to the room to find it empty. There were tables set up but no computers. There were stil mounds of cables and monitors as if the classroom was still being set up. I was confused, I hunted down the director and verified that it was the right class. Finally a few others shuffled into the room but still no instructor. After about 10 minutes the instructor showed up with a had full of copies and nervous and unprepared as usual. He proceded to ask me if I could take the copies and staple them into packets for the rest of the students. I couldn't believe it... he was asking me to spend MY CLASS TIME that I AM PAYING FOR to be a teacher's aide? This blew me away, I'm not even sure if I responded to him, I think I may have just stared at him. I looked back over the classroom, as it was now 15 minutes past the start of the class and realized that there was a total of 6 students remaining. Out of our entire program, 6 people were still here. It was right then that I could delude myself no longer, my dreams and goals were all crushed. I was depressed and walked out of the classroom not responding to the instructors attempts to speak to me and left. I never returned. It has been almost 10 years and to this day I still get emotional reliving my experience at ITT Tech. I owe thousands in student loans that I continue to struggle to pay every month but the biggest price I paid was the destruction of my hope and dreams for my future and my faith in the education system. I have never been the same and I have stopped many many people from making the mistake of attending ITT Technical Institute. That is about the only thing that makes me feel any better and the fact that I got one beautiful thing out of attending ITT, I met my husband there who also went through this experience with me and we have a beautiful son. If I didn't make that mistake then I would not have them in my life. If anybody has any information about class action lawsuits please send me info at [protected]@yahoo.com.
Thank you,
Suzanne

temporary credit/predatory lending
Think twice about enrolling at ITT Tech. They will take full advantage of you any chance they get. Listen carefully. Before starting classes I sat down with one of their financial aid clerks to discuss cost breakdown. I got a clear picture of exactly how much the grants and various government loans would cover. At $486/credit hour, you are still between...

My son enrolled in ITT Tech in Dunmore, PA and was accepted, they had told him he would get grants, etc. to pay the tuition for Computer Technology. He is presently disabled with a disease called BiPolar Disorder and they told him to try it. He could not do the work required of the classes and withdrew after two days, now they are saying we owe $1011.00 and have forwarded the bill to this collection agency listed above. They have not sent me any breakdown of the charges and my wife has tried to explain the situation to the local Finance Director for ITT Tech and he said we still have to pay. Both my wife and I are on disability and my son has an attorney working on Social Security Disability for him. I do not know where to turn for help.

I attended for two years at the Dunmore location as well. I'll spare the long story. In short, the teachers were uneducated, and in many cases lied about the degrees they had. The dean was a drug addict, and he even asked me for cocaine. Shortly after he was let go, I'm not sure as to why. I'm drowning in debt because I refuse to pay for something that holds no true value. I was honestly in better standings prior to attending ITT of Dunmore, PA
If someone can forward me some information on how to resolve this matter, it would be greatly appreciated. After letting this slip by for years, I can no longer ignore the issue.

I have been a student at ITT-Tech for over a year now and I honestly have no complaints. The instructors are great, the material is great and the school is great. I am not saying that anyone out here is lying, but maybe just had a bad experience. I graduate in June of 2012 and I know I will find a great job with everything I have learned so far.
Hello. I am a graduate of ITT Technical Institute and have experiences very similar to the discrimation decribed in this web site. I also am seeking help for their, ITT, frauduent presentation of their program and job prospects afterwards. PLEASE contact me, I would greatly appreaciate further knowledge of how many students where mislead and misrepresented to also and how to file a law suite or class action to make what is VERY WRONG, RIGHT for myself as well as those whom have similar experiences npw and while attending ITT. I am a former student of ITT Tech, and I'm in the process of forming a case against ITT Tech for fraud based on deceptive business practices, false advertising and predatory lending practices. Anyone who wishes to participate in this effort is free to contact me on my new blog site, www.idiotnotes.com.
My goal is to gather evidence from former staff and students from all over the country and present this evidence to the appropriate agencies who can put a stop to what they are still being allowed to do. Even better than that, I hope to be able to put a strong enough class-action case together on all of our behalves to convince the courts to force ITT to reimburse us for the costs we've all incurred because of their deception.
If we can all get together and fight this, maybe we can at least cause some kind of student loan reform where this illegal activity is no longer allowed to continue and it can no longer rack up victims. And yes, we are victims...we were charged for goods and services that the company did not even attempt to deliver or provide and we deserve to be compensated, or at the very least we deserve a refund of all charges incurred because of this fraud.
LAWSUIT FOR DUNMORE, PA CAMPUS
If you attended the ITT Tech Dunmore, PA campus and were discriminated against for any reason (especially by Professor Brown or Dean Middlebrooks), please contact me at sraquel@aol.com.
I am filing a lawsuit on behalf of my brother who has a disability and is constantly discriminated against and harrassed by Professor Brown and Dean Middlebrooks.
If you are a current or former student and you have witnessed discrimination at this campus, stand up and do the right thing! Contact me at sraquel@aol.com.
My fiance attends ITT Tech Dunmore, PA.
The so called professors don't have real experience in the field of computers- MIKE BROWN in the beginning was pouring concrete in the morning before teaching at night and Ladies and Gents He is the COMPUTER CHAIR PERSON!
My fiance is ADHD. He never wanted to ask for special treatment so he didn't ask for it. I however, made Mike Brown aware of this about a year ago when we spoke on the phone as my fiance was having a hard time in school- and I explained the situation.
they have had him take one class a couple times now. They didn't graduate him last semester.
I called them up screaming. Mike Brown and Middlebrook- the Dean (cough cough Deans have doctorate degrees, , sorry) He has not been able to maintain work and keep up with this idiot place they call an education institute. Any educational facility worth thier salt would graduate a student that they see is trying thier best. I just can't keep supporting my fiance, his 20 yr old daughter and myself- I am on social security because I need a transplant and I had to take a part time job to handle the house finances because of ITT Tech.
They do idiotic things- like he missed the 2 alloted miss days. Then there was a snow day and they counted that against him as an absence and kicked him out of the class! I have never heard of such a thing. I have 2 college degrees from Pennsylvania State accredited universities - snow days - we had many, beyond 3 my senior year.
He had to take an online class where the information didn't link online! When he still couldn't get on line to access the class 4 weeks later- they FAILED HIMM!
AND HANDS ON? WHAT HANDS ON? they are given a simulator. My brother is a pilot- let's teach him with a simulator- no they sure didn't. he had hands on- as ITT Tech claims they are top of the notch at
Others at ITT Tech have had the same problems and am filing complaints with the Pennsylvania Board of Education but considering THEY AREN'T ACCREDITED I don't see how this will go very far.
IF MY FIANCE KNEW ME WHEN HE SIGNED UP IN MAY 2007 HE WOULD HAVE NEVER GONE.
ONCE HE SAW THAT HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN CERTIFIED IN MICROSOFT AT MY COLLEGE FOR WAY LESS HE WAS SORELY BESIDE HIMSELF. HE IS 'GRADUATING' ITT TECH WTIH OUT ANY CERTIFICATION!
ALSO NO ONE IN THIS AREA HAS GOTTEN JOBS- ONLY ONE PERSON MY FIANCE KNOWS IN THE 2 YRS HAS GOTTEN ANY KIND OF DECENT JOB. THEY EXPECT A MAN WITH 4 KIDS AND A FUTURE WIFE, 2 CARS, MORTGAGE TO MAKE IT ON A $15/ HR JOB-
DON'T GO TO ITT TECH. I can be contacted at dymondsnsaphirez@yahoo.com if anyone wants to chat about this. Also another student is interested in any actions for a class action lawsuit. I can put you in touch with him also
It's hard to find a real school these days. I don't trust any school that is advertised on tv. They are all scams.
I had a hell of a time with these people! Let me tell you my story.
I did a quarter at ITT and decided to move onto another school (Rasmussen - great choice). I got a bill, too, with 'ten days to pay'. During this time, I had to attend a funeral for a friend who got killed in war this June. While traveling, this company called me and tried to get me to pay immediately.
My response was very simple, "I will glady cooperate and want to comply. However, since you could be scam artist, I am going to call ITT to verify your information. Then, I will call the number they send me."
The [censored] on the phone could not believe I would double-check him. It was as if it never occurred to the company that someone might actually have critical-thinking skills (which, funny enough, I got from one of the courses I took at ITT - Sally Dodge, you're the best). The conversation went into the ridiculous. Finally, I hung up, called ITT, got the right number, made a formal complaint, and then called the right number and paid off my debt immediately.
This company buys ITT's debts at a fraction of their original worth and then give commission to the person who ropes you in. This is why the people on the phone are so nuts - they want their commission. This is also why 'my [censored]' went nuts when I said I'd call back. He even went so far as to give me his direct line (dumb, because now I had proof of who he was) and to demand that he could call back in ten minutes. I think I had to give him permission to call me again. I did not.
When you pay them, they pocket a decent deal of your money.
My advice is to tell them you've rescinded their right to call you, and to then take your time. Your credit is already compromised. I am sorry that ITT went on you like they did on me. I got the call the day after my ten day grace period was up, and I was at a military funeral. Nice.
Best wishes to you, sincerely.
avoid!
Anyone considering getting a degree should consider going to a real college and focusing on getting a real degree. I am currently a criminal justice student at itt tech san diamas. From day one with this school has been nothing but a nightmare. I thought this was going to be my last semester at this school and I could move on with my life and forget this bull**** school. But the cj dean Mr. b refused to give me the extra class I needed and I'm stuck here an extra semester. Thanks for nothing Mr. B.

If it were up to me I would give away education for free. There will aways be someone who out there looking to take advantage of you. If you feel ITT took you for a ride and that you have learned your lesson and will never go there again, well at least you learned a lesson. No the question is will you allow others to take adavntage of you? The fact is if you did your research instead of blindly relying on others that do not know you to make your education decision your would have had a much better college experience. I have completed three degrees and attended many schools and in each school I had to take charge of my education and guide my career path.

Think twice
As a former employee of ITT Technical Institute (as an enrollment representative and then as a Career Services Specialist), I encourage you to think twice about attending ITT Tech. Please understand that I am not a disgruntled employee. In fact, as an employee they treated me okay. But the bottom line is, my integrity was challenged on a daily basis as I saw students come through who should have never been enrolled in school.
The admission requirements are sub-par to say the least...in essence, anyone can be admitted into most programs. And boy, do students pay. At over $425 per quarter credit hour, ITT is praying on the less fortunate (in many cases) and encouraging them to take loans they will never be able to pay.
From what I witnessed of the education, it is well below average (aside from a few good instructors). I attended and graduated from two state schools (both of which were much less expensive) and received a much higher quality education.
And finally, the most important part that most people do not realize: ITT is a for-profit, proprietary institution (State schools and community colleges are not-for-profit and not publicly traded). It is publicly traded. What this means: Students are paying to keep shareholders happy and to pad the pockets of the executive staff located in Carmel, IN.
When I was an admissions representative, I was reviewed by the number of students I enrolled. It didn't matter whether I thought they could cut it or not, they wanted numbers and that was the bottom line. When I was in career services, I was judged by the numbers of 'placed' students. It didn't matter if they had a felony or no competency-they still had to be placed or I didn't keep a job.
A natural question you may have: Why did you work there for 2.5 years if you had so many issues with the school? if I had it to do over, I wouldn't have. But now I'm going to try to keep some people from making a decision they will regret.
The Bottom Line: Attend a community college or a public, state school. It will save you a great deal of money and the education will be much better.

These types of "schools" are SCAMS. They are created by corrupt rich people to bilk money out of "the stupid". They affilliate themselves with government "lenders" who will give these types of "schools" kickbacks for signing up as many suckers as possible with loans from places like SallieMae.
Once you have signed your name, you are done for. You CANNOT get out of this loan, no matter how hard you try! You are stuck paying it! Unlike a bank loan you CAN get out of if you show reason that the "school" was forfeit in their duties.
The government backs these types of "schools" because this is how the government scams kids and people out of a hell of BILLIONS of dollars a year.
Never attend any of these so-called 'colleges' because the Degree does not hold the same weight as a community college or actual college. They are about numbers, not education. This includes ITT Technical Institute, Devry, Kaplan, Argosy, Everest, the Art Institutes, and anyone advertising "a great job" or "easy fast degree." How do I know? I have worked at most of these places.
ASK about the placement numbers. Here is how they get a lot of them. Lets say a student taking courses finds himself a job - the college does not find the job, the student gets it himself. Or, the student graduates and she is no longer heard from again. Both of these students will be counted as "jobs found by the college." They will add 2 to their count.
NUMBERS! The more students in class, the more money they make, so they do not care you are in class learning, only you are in class. This is why it is so easy to pass, when you are absent they harass you to return, and if you are about to drop out they move hell and earth to get you to return.
ANYONE is admitted. Students with criminal records are allowed in law or medical - even thought they know they will never get a job. SURE the students are told to sign a waiver and sure it is illegal to ask or say anything. But they will gladly take their money. Even sex offenders.
COST compare the costs to community colleges carefully - don't let the reps spin the tale. They are NOT reps; they are sales persons. Once they get your number, they are to call you AT LEAST 10 times a day. Then your number goes to someone else. Another 10 x a day.
Instructors like me are told to pad grades, 'help' failing students, and give work that is easy. Does this help you in the real world? NO. Take my word, and this is why I'm job hunting. STAY AWAY.

Has anyone here that is a former Admissions Representative, got terminated from their position for a verbal and two writtens? If so any trouble with UC?
This former employee knows what she is talking about. I have a son with Tourette's Syndrome. He didn't have the money to go to a community college and I admit I just did not get educated enough about how high the tuition is when it comes to ITT. Also, my son originally enrolled to get an Associates Degree. I was there when he signed up for that. It was a two year program and it seemed like it would be worth the time and effort. I told ITT about my son's Tourette's. They didn't really seem to have anything much to say about it. They did promise him a great paying job and they promised to give him assistance in looking for a job after he graduated. Then about 6 months into his schooling, one of the employees of ITT came to my son and told him if he went for his Bachelor's degree he would get even more money. This, of course, meant more time at school (two more years) and alot more money. They didn't really talk to him about the additional cost. Since I wanted my son to do this on his own and not interfere with his education, I didn't object to him changing his ambitions. As time went on, and the tuition costs (with many private loans that are at least 12% interest loans) went up, there were times when my son was supposed to be taking a certain class to work towards his bachelors and they would not have that class available. This meant it was going to take EVEN LONGER for him to graduate. I also noticed that ITT oftentimes was short on qualified teaching staff. In the end, my son graduated four years after he started at ITT and only had an associates. He is almost $100, 000 in debt. I actually have parent plus loans that I am responsible for in the amount of over $8000. Aaron has been out of school for years now. ITT never helped him get a job. They always told my son that they didn't have anything available for him. He did get interviews, he did not get hired. Most of the time the jobs that were out there required experience. Also, he still needs certifications. Forget that, he can barely pay the student loans and there are many more loans in forebearance that will come to haunt him soon. DO NOT GO TO ITT. I wish we could get involved in a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THEM. They are fraudulent and greedy.
I am an Army Vet and current student at the National City, Ca ITT campus.
About an Hour ago, I received a call from my math II instructor, to inform me that the school had dropped me from his class. I had only missed 1 day, last Wednesday, Oct 16, 2013. For some strange reason, the school dropped me that day. My instructor can testify, that i haven't missed 3 straight days of class(ITT drop policy). THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE DONE THIS TO ME! I got drop last quarter(from the same class) because i had to leave the country to bury my grandmother. I notified the school before leaving, and they assured me i would not be dropped. They dropped me anyways.
What is wrong with this school? Now, i have to file a complaint with the VA, because they have reported to them, that i dropped the class, and now, i'm going to have to repay the VA out of my own pocket! That's over $2, 000 that i don't have. I 'm not employed and i live off my VA disability and my BAH that i receive for going full time to this school. This will now affect me financially.
Beware of this school.

I attended ITT in Dayton, Ohio and did not have a good experience. I was there about 10 years ago and my story is similar to Suzanne's. If anyone is going to file a class action suite please contact me @ kmw27@woh.rr.com. I have also told a lot of people not to attend the school because of the high cost and inadequate education practices.
Thank You,
