no recourse after being scammed
There was a "mansion" offered for rent on TripAdvisor for $1390/wk. I sent the link to my wife, recommending it for her mothers birthday. It was offered by Scottsdale Golf Villa's. When my wife clicked the link the price became $3400. She thought I was recommending it so booked it and paid in advance. When we arrived, we found it to be a few old condo's connected together.
When I brought this to the attention of staffers at TripAdvisor, which is a difficult task because they don't use phones and take days to reply via email, they said they'd discuss it with the owner of the Villa. They removed my factual review.
I don't have the time to take this to a States Attorney General, but TripAdvisor is party to a scam and they know it, don't care, and I assume it's happening more often every day. Beware.
here I am without a place to stay and giving access to my credit card
Made what i thought was a reservation thre tripadvisor.com. they said they would send me an e nail with confer. # along with other details. did not receive e mail. i called the hotel which tripadvisor made reservations for me. the hotel did not receive this info. i made 2 different phone calls and was told the room was booked. meanwhile, i had already gave them my credit card number to pay i so called booking fee. here i am without a place to stay and giving access to my credit card. i called the bank and cancelled my card. what a scam.
negative reviews
We have been no.4 on Trip Advisor for a long time and when we were no.1 it generated several very damaging reviews from jealous competitors. These reviews are clearly fake, such as "charging exorbitant prices for food", or "waitress not knowing anything about wine list". In such cases I write a reply asking the writer of the review to bring his bill for full refund, knowing that he could not do so. Strangely these replies have never been published, as it does apparently not conform to guidelines. We know that the writer of these fake reviews is a restaurant owner who is above all a computer expert. Although his restaurant is bankrupt and his food is average he has managed to pull all his bad reviews from Triadvisor website. We are not computer experts, we'd rather concentrate on making good food and giving good service. This attitude from Tripadvisor is very disappointing.
The bottom line is that someone who is computer savvy can get incredible ratings by damaging his competitors and write himself positive reviews by spoofing is ISP.
Hello Attia7501, Thank you for your encouraging review. I am still frustrated because some negative reviews are so obviously fake, but as long as they conform to Trip Advsor, the staff won't remove them. I haven't even been able to post a comment. I tried to log on to http://anyavee_railay_resort.tripod.com, but it did not work.
Best Regards,
Dear Restaurant owner, If your food and wine are good, please don't worry from one bad review. I always say pictures are better than words. If the reviewer provides evidence of the bad service or high price, then why he/she is not posting the bill/receipt for everyone to see. I recently visited a Hotel/Resort that posted wonderful pictures about its location (Anyavee Railay Resort) when my wife and kids and I arrived at the resort, we found out that it sits on a swamp area with garbage and litter all around the entrance of the hotel. I took pictures of the swamp and the location of the Anyavee Resort and posted the, along with our review to show the people that we are 100% honest in our reviews. If I were you, I would ask and encourage my customers to leave comments on how good your service is and how decent prices your restaurant offers. Good luck with your restaurant. Please visit http://anyavee_railay_resort.tripod.com to see the horrible experience my family endured while visiting this resort. God Bless
What you say is correct, though not widespread in practice. There are many examples on TA owner forum and on this website http://tripadvisorwatch.wordpress.com/
fraud
TripAdvisor has this hotel listed as #2 business hotel but when we stayed over Easter weekend, the place was appalling. I placed a negative review on the website and shortly after they pulled it. 2 weeks later it was reposted with lies by the General Manager saying we did not stay at his hotel. My wife contacted him, even got an apology from him but hi...

Expedia owns Tripadvisor.
Tripadvisor it's an ILLEGITIMATE web-site already reported to the court in EUROPE ( waiting for the judgement on next 2011 ).
USA, after 11th Setmber 2001 has paid great attention to terrorism and ANONIMOUS behaviours.
It's unbelivable that nobody in the USA has already reported Tripadvisor as an ILLEGAL EDITOR which protect anonimous reviwers who most of the time, being protected by this unlowful system, they produce libellious contents.
It's unbelivable that the AMERICAN JURIDICAL system is NOT protecting turism enterprises from this UNFAIR competition system created, owned and managed by EXPEDIA!
Expedia-Tripadvisor don't reveal the true identity of the writer, if they are asked, in ored to protect the on-line reputation.
REVIEWS are a good value to protect travelers from being cheated and to promote the hotels and B&B which DESERVE, but...ONLY WHEN TRUE, RELIABLE, linked to a real traveller and to a real paid booking, and generated by someone who is responsible for what it's written in the review!
EXPEDIA-TRIPADVISOR are abusing the real value of the reviews and are damaging the free and fair market.
Expedia-Tripadvisor demand over 30% of the value of the booking generated by the system...this is MAFIA!
When the AMERICAN ISTITUTIONS will analize and act against EXPEDIA?

not unbiased
This company claims to be an unbiased service where people who are traveling/eating out can go and place a review of the hotel/motel/restaurant, etc. The site is completely unfriendly to businesses who get slammed by a disgruntled person. Anyone can post any negative thing they want about a company, lies included but businesses have their hands tied on the type of management response they post. Even if a review is spewing lies, the business can not say so and can not respond directly to the person complaining. Most of the time, these reviews are from people who want something for nothing or have some other hidden agenda. Their reviews hurt businesses and there is no fair way for a business to respond. When trying to contact TripAdvisor as a business owner, they simply dismiss your response or tell you it can't be published. I've also had TripAdvisor contact my business wanting me to pay them for advertising - how does this keep them unbiased? It's curious that the top businesses rarely have a negative review. Is it becasue they pay TripAdvisor? Makes one wonder...

Tripadvisor will not allow a hotel to defend them selves through their "Management response" if the response is a defence then Tripadvisor will allow it, if the response is an agreement and an apology then Tripadvisor will allow it...it makes their sorry site look better.
We totally agree that Tripadvisor is not unbiased. In fact, we know that they have not published some of the better reviews that were submitted by guests. We also cannot defend ourselves to poor reviews because Tripadvisor will not publish them. It is totally onesided.
reviews
They claim about their site "Reviews you can trust". It's a BIG LIE.
I posted negative review about hotel Alle Guglie on their site, wanted to warn people against this hotel.
Next 2 minuted tripadvisor.com deleted everything I posted. Do not read their site, they just cover terrible hotels what paid them.
Good luck!
Tripadvisor is a new mafia - if hotel does not pay them, they will destroy it!
Agree! You're welcomed on tripasvisor only if you leave positive comments for their hotels what bring them money! And they just cover them if hotels abuse visitors! Scammers!

I agree, my point is that somebody wrote a 1 star review about my Tour Company that's a fake wrote by a compatitor I know, do you guys know if there is any Lawyer in MA who can help me ? Please help !

Trip advisor is nothing more than a good ole boy club.
They ask for input but if they do not agree, they do nothing. If there is a "hot" topic, they will close the topic stating THEY thought enough was said. People complain all the time they can not find the contact button. They make it very hard to find so you will give up trying to find it. They don't want you to contact them! They send you around in circles till you just give up. Second most common question, where is my review, how long does it take? Again, if they don't agree it never shows up ! People complain all the time and for the most part they do nothing. Their site is stuck in the 90s. Hard to move around and nothing cutting edge, very old school.
Also, there is one person there that thinks they have to answer every question. They use the same ole lame answer over and over almost half the time.
" This site is member driven " bla, bla, bla.
You offer help and they do nothing.
The exercise sensorship to keep their little club warm & fuzzy.
Tripadviser is full of lies, just google tripadvisor lies or tripadvisor fake reviews and see!
They protect their own hotels, don't forget that Tripadvisor are owned by Expedia, why do you think that your reviews were removed, it was because it would not have earned them so much money in commissions.
Tripadvisor is a scam and the sooner the members of the public realise it the better.
fauls complaint about our b&b
We are a lovely B&B Cottage by the lake in Port Dalhousie. We have had wonderfull reviews from our international gusts for the past year and they hand write their reviews in our guest book which can be seen on the website.
We had a guest recently who nocked us down in price 3 months ago when they booked and when they arrived they loved our place and said so we also gave them some extras as we new they were on a small budget.
After 4 days of enjoying themselves and taking and taking they demanded a futher discount and we explained that we had already given them a very big discount in the beginning and could no give them a further discount.
When they left they had damaged the sheets with bleach, taken all the toilet roles in the storage cupboard and chipped paint off the stairs and damaged other thing to make our lovely place look bad. They took pictures of inside storage closets and made a mess of our deck furniture. and all the bad pictures which are staged they put on trip advisor with a horedous complaint. We tried many tines to tell trip advisor that their story was not true but trip advisor kept sending back my emails and not alloing me to defend my lovely B&B Cottage.
Someone needs to review Trip Advisor and close them down the are one sided.
Kind Regards
The Owner of the B&B in Port Dalhousie

We have a small hotel, which when we get a bad review I always reply to it as 99.9% of the time it is some-one who has been refused service in the bar or partied in the room and been asked to leave. Some of the reviews are so untrue you cannot believe that trip advisor actually prints them. We also have tried email and calling amercia (from scotland!) and they do absolutely nothing. When we do get a valied complaint I take it on board and do something about it. What really makes me angry is that I know for a fact the a hotel just along from us writes their own reviews (needless to say all brilliant) and they put them on the site. How do I know this, my daughter worked there and they would do it in front of her! Unfortunately I suffer from being honest!

false advertising misleading information
they allow anonymous people review establishments whether they stayed or not, reviews are never verified or checked, and if a hotel does complaint they make out to have the review checked and then come back and say they found nothing to indicate the review is suspicious, but I know because I submitted a review about a place that I stayed and got the owner...

The short version: Tripadvisor has a review system which allows anyone to post anything about any hotel, regardless of whether they have even stayed there. This allows all sorts of people to abuse the system. An example: a hotel was blackmailed and told that if they didn't give a former guest some money, the guest would write a false malicious review to...
