Ross Dress for Less - employment of no english speaking staff

Please know that I am not a bigot, racal profiler, racist or ethnically biased.
I am American born citizen of immigrant people who came to this country, eager to learn & speak English and that English was the language of this country that has given them and their decedents a home in a land of free and equal people these many years.

With that said; I am greatly pained to send this letter of [major] complaint in reference to the hiring policy of above noted store in the West Kendall Miami suburban area.

My purpose and intent to visit the store was to return and replace an item purchased earlier in the week.

I was greeted in Spanish by Orfelina/ 714946 who proceeded to process the return by trained rote of the item and sales slip before her.
I was ready to pay for the exchange when she couldn't find the new item on the sales receipt.

I explained to her, in English that I was purchasing the item.

She had no idea of my words, intent or conversation.

It was at that time a co-manager stepped in an explained that Orfelina does not speak any English; And yet holds a speaking position, dealing with the public in an American owned corporate business in the United States of America, in a city that has a well above average unemployment rate, and further demands that every [American-Anglo] needs to be bi-lingual English-Spanish in order to secure any form of even the most menial, minimum wage employment here.

While I would never suggest that a job be denied to anyone who is seeking to work, none the less I do have to question that a non speaker of English is given a job dealing with the American public in an American owned company, over an out of work American citizen who may not be bi-lingual, and will not be considered for the same position.

As said, shame on you.

All Ross` employment documents and training videos are in both Spanish and English. So, they're endorsing it, but they can't refuse to train a select group of employees because of eeoc. Also policy requires cashier training. However, there's been incidents where foreign (non Spanish speaking) applicants
who spoke English, but couldn't read it didn't get hired because there were no forms in those languages. Had to pass up experienced workers because of this. Guess that's not discrimination.

Sorry, but the Citizenship test should come in only one language. If you want to live here, speak it.

It is ridiculous to expect the English speaking American to speak Spanish if the same condition for employment is not imposed on the non-English speaking Spanish potential employee. The policy should be for all--learn the language first, then we'll hire you. Our country is one of the few that feel it is somehow politically incorrect to expect the foreigner to learn our language. It's simply ridiculous!
