Store (#115), located at 10516 Katy Freeway in Houston, TX, Hobby Lobby employees work up to 14+ hours a day during the holiday season and are only given one lunch break and one meal break when they are supposed to get two rest breaks and two meal breaks. If the employee says anything about not getting a second break they are harassed for speaking up. The managers get upset when the employees ask to go to the restroom. If the managers think that an employee has been in the restroom too long (more than five minutes) they are paged on the intercom and scolded like a child upon return.
Friends and relatives are promoted and trained over other deserving employees. The Store Manager makes and controls this hostile atmosphere at our store by pretending that he does not ever know what is going on even though a lot of employees have told him over and over again. The store manager also contributes to the poor work environment by laughing at these situations, constantly speaking badly about employees to managers as well as to other employees, ignoring problems, and worst of all, being part of it. Also, at this particular location, one particular culture has formed a cultural clique and is allowed to be rude, discriminatory, and disrespectful to other employees who are not in this clique. The managers in this same clique try to, and often successfully harass those who are not the clique out, to make room for their friends and relatives. These managers harass particular employees by trying to make them look bad via demeaning, discrediting, conflict, exacerbation, fabrication, etc., thus making them unworthy or undeserving of promotion or permanency in the company.
Also, the language used by management, including the store manager and some employees at Hobby Lobby is extremely and constantly foul and offensive. It is hard to believe that Hobby Lobby is a Christian-based business by what goes on inside.
Employees are afraid to speak up because they do not want to get fired, be harassed or given a bad job reference.
