I love this app! It has words that I have never heard before
I have two other apps created by Monkey Taps. I downloaded this one from a suggestion on their Motivation app and I am so glad I did! I just started reading the words randomly and because of the wide variety of vocabulary it offers, I now choose one word out of five that is typical by definition, but that is not used regularly. I memorize the word and the context in which it is intended to keep in my memory for future use. I’m impressed with the apps that Monkey Taps has created. They are people centered, growth oriented and are easy to use. I purchased the yearly subscription to all 3 due to the functionality and the benefits that they provide to me. Thanks everyone at Monkey Taps!
If it's what you want
If it's what you want, it's good. I want something similar to what I had as a student in the 90's with unusual words we were unlikely to encounter or even use in conversation but sometimes knowing a word is enough to give context to an experience. Two come to mind because they've entered my lexicon to at least a small degree:
Flews- dog lips. I see them as the ones on the sides with uneven edges
Fire-fanged- overheating something in a microwave. I think we all agree it's different than overheating something any other way.
Devs, oh talented devs- anyone can make a word a day app. It takes a special kind of developer to release a truly unique Word of the Day App. You can be that developer.
Great app. No complaints except…
This is an excellent app (or should I say venerable?) I love it because of its simplicity - easy to use - and amazing content.
However, there is something I noticed. Recently I’ve been learning Italian and wanted to change my language on the app to Italian. In order to do this, I have to change my overall language - which was kind of upsetting.
$20 a year doesn’t seem too bad for membership, but it’s honestly annoying how many features are blocked. I won’t take off a star for this issue because I know you need to make money somehow, but it can get frustrating to see so many things encouraging membership.
That’s all! This is a terrific app but there’s a few things I noticed that are annoying.
Would Recommend if You’re a Knowledge Hungry Gryffin-Claw (Griffindor and Ravenclaw)
Honestly I’m sure any type of person would enjoy this app. Kids, teens, and adults alike (It lets you pick your level of vocabulary to improve your experience). And it actually (mostly) gives words that you (again mostly) don’t know. But I would say it’s a bit annoying that it continues to ask me to get premium. Which is dumb because it’s really not worth your money. Which is why it’s stupid that someone would keep these features from you. What is even the point of preventing people from having the best experience with this app and improving their lives (at least al little) when know one’s gon’ waist their money in it anyways. It’s POINTLESS! Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy this app as I have.
Cool but needs improvement
I love that the app gives you new words as often you you like. A few improvements I would love to see are:
-Give the gender of the word along with the word. Knowing the correct gender is crucial.
-Give context. Sometimes seeing a word used in context can drastically improve ones understanding and the likelihood of it becoming a useable vocabulary word. Don’t just give the word “comida”. Show it used in a sentence: “quiero comer comida”.
-Give the option for the notification more like a flash card. Have the Spanish word on top with its translation separated with a space.
Lastly, make the list of vocabulary more useful. I get a lot of words I already know. Make the list of words Not the top 100 most used words.
Good app, Great potential.
Blah
Look, I enjoy words. The app is simple. Swipe up, swipe down. Change how the background looks. That’s really it. I don’t care about backgrounds. Is it functional? Does it help? Will it help improve my vocab? Is it worth paying for? My answer is: No. Save your money, better off just being disciplined everyday and picking up a dictionary. I would have enjoyed this app if half the buttons worked and if you had the option to hide the definitions. I am not sure how this has been rated so high. Just download the websters dictionary for crying out loud and you will be better off. At least you will get more options. I am canceling ASAP. Nothing personal. Congrats on being brave enough to have something out there, but this is not cutting it. At least for me.
Absolutely Amazing App
This app has completely grown my brain.I was falling back in my vocabulary grades and my parents started to notice,I didn’t want to fail them so I was looking at apps to improve my vocabulary because that’s were I needed the most improvement. I tried all sorts of apps but this is the only one that works for me ,I absolutely love the fact that I can study words that apply to my learning and the time that I receive them , not forgetting that I can also listen to the words because they are a little lengthy. My vocabulary grades went from the 70s to the 90s and I am so happy to make my family proud again .I would definitely recommend this app to anyone struggling in any area of school work. Thank you to the creators for making such a wonderful and helpful app.
Great App! But with some room for improvement
I got the subscription and think it’s worth it! I like how you can customize the background and font depending on the user’s mood and personality. However, my only grievance here is that I mainly use it to broaden my Spanish words, but the pronunciation doesn’t sound native, and if anything sounds more like Spanish words spoken with an American English accent. Think “taco” pronounced as “taecoe”. I think it is a valid cause for aversion. Because if the app were to offer foreign (non-English in this situation) language then it should also be accompanied with the accurate pronunciation. Maybe I’m just being picky but if you imagine a native speaker looking up words in their native language and seeing how it’s being represented, you’ll understand how the person might feel.
Neat idea but not comprehensive
I was super excited about this but, after having the premium version for a few months, regret the purchase. I already know many of the words at the advanced level, and the lack of an internal dictionary within the app means that I can’t use the app to look up words I don’t know. I love that you can add your own words, but wish there was a faster way to do that than typing in the correct spelling and definition yourself. The widget and notifications are helpful, but I noticed the words repeating after just a few months. I also wish there was a way to pick a background and a font for the widget independently of each other. This app was fun while it lasted but ultimately not worth the price tag—especially when Merriam Webster offers a better version of a similar thing at a fraction of the price.

Thumbs down
I’ve had this app for a long time, but I really dislike the fact that they’ve apparently removed the “thumbs down” option. I like building my own word lists and use the “heart” far more often, but there are words (we all have them) that are grating and that I would add to a list that I’d personally avoid using, just for fun. Once in awhile, too, a sentence example will pop up that’s a little dated (I wouldn’t go so far as to say “offensive”, but maybe a little “insensitive”)—those, too, would end up getting a thumbs down. It was all in good fun and was an easy way to differentiate words while building vocabulary.
Now, only a heart is available. Puppies and sunshine and unicorns for all! It’s silly. I’m far from “get off my lawn; the way things used to be” guy, but come on: are we really so collectively delicate now that we can no longer handle even the mildest rebuke imaginable: a virtual dislike button?
Wants me to subscribe for a monthly/yearly fee
Downloaded this and then started a setup process once you open it. Asks about how many times a day you want to see notifications, what your vocabulary level is, etc. All questions I’m okay with until about ten questions in I get a screen that is talking about the subscription. $30 a year, but you can cancel at anytime, and you get a three day trial. Only option I saw was to continue, which I’d assume would mean accepting the subscription. I’m all for learning new vocabulary, but I’m sure there are better options out there that aren’t charging you money. I’d even understand a free app that has most functionality blocked until you subscribe. But making the app free to download, without making it clear it’s not useable without a subscription, seems wrong. At least let me test it out without subscribing, and a three day trial that I actively have to take steps to cancel doesn’t count. Immediately closed and uninstalled the app.
Stop giving me useless words
The app started out fine with words that I might actually use in daily life… until it started hitting me with words of different body parts, types of cheese (cooking cheese, Swiss cheese, table cheese), and other words that aren’t very useful or that are common knowledge. Some of the definitions are inaccurate too. Sadly, I already deleted the app, so I can’t give an example word for word. The most I remember is the word “hack” had a definition about fixing something. Searching the word up, as I’m pretty sure hacking has nothing to do with fixing, it turns out no definition even comes close to matching it. The word “encrypt” as well. It’s not to convert data/information to code. They really need to check the source of their information.
Also, it should have an option to show ALL the definitions of a word. The word “hack” only had one wrong definition when there are many more definitions.
TLDR: good start, but gave niche words and had incorrect definitions
Can Live Without It
As a user of the vocabulary app, I was initially drawn in by the sleek and modern aesthetic of the interface. However, I was disappointed that the app was not entirely free and that advertisements and requests to purchase a subscription were a frequent distraction during my use.
While I appreciated the various vocabulary-building exercises and word lists, the constant pop-ups urging me to purchase a premium subscription proved too distracting and detracted from my overall experience. Additionally, I found that much of the same information provided by the app was available for free on other websites and platforms.
While the app is a useful tool for those looking to expand their vocabulary and learn new words, I ultimately decided to delete it in favor of other resources that offered similar benefits without the added distractions and pressure to purchase a subscription.
Overall, I would recommend this app to those who are willing to pay for a more comprehensive experience, but caution that those seeking a completely free vocabulary-building tool may be better served elsewhere.
Love the app, BUT…
I love this app/ it’s beautifully designed, aesthetically pleasing, is exposing me to relevant words I want to remember, & allows you to favorite words to come back to. I have been using the app two days and have two issues, which may be user error— I hope so! I am open to feedback! My issues are as follows:
1) every time I open the app, the music I am streaming thru my phone stops. WHY?! A couple of times I have gotten my music to continue to play while I use the app- but it is inconsistent and I can’t figure out what I do to get that to work, and it plays on low volume like background music. Most of the time the music just stops playing and will not play when I am in the app. That is a major issue for me. I want to be able to listen to my music (#1 priority) AND learn new words- at the same time. The two should not be mutually exclusive and frankly this is a deal breaker for me with this app. I have played around with the sound, turned off the “theme sound” and turned the “words playing sound” off - that does not work either. Why does a vocab app take over sound from my phone? It’s nonsensical…
2) the search feature is buried and it appears that it only searches thru words that have been shown rather than all words in the English dictionary. I would love for this to be my one-stop shop for vocabulary, and not have to go to dictionary.com to look-up a word. Hopefully I am missing something…
Vocabulary - Learn words daily Complaints 17
Husband: to use sparingly
A lot of the words seem to be defined incorrectly like husband for example was defined as “to use sparingly” and idk if that’s just a definition of the word I’d never heard of or what but I’d like to learn words I could actually learn and use in my advanced writing without sounding silly.

Do not be duped into paying
Absolute trash app- do not download. It’s literally just a list of vocabulary words. That’s it. No exercises… no curating… no practice. And the Spanish voice to text isn't even correct. They start you on a three day trial and then charge you $30 for the year if you don’t forget to cancel. Don’t be duped.

# sneaky add‘a
Sneaky pop-up ads that block the word you are trying to read, I feel like you are tempting me with something that I might like, but who knows cannot enjoy or find a use for this app because of the ads, If it’s a subscription fee you would like be upfront about it and keep those ads or YouTube or something else good day

Fraudulent charges
I downloaded this app and accepted the 3 day free trial. Before the three day period was up, I made sure to cancel renewal. Subsequently, I was charged $19.99 for the year…. I reported this to apple but until this issue is resolved, I will not update nor trust this predatory company. $20 is better spent on a dictionary.

Pronunciation
I love the words that it suggests to me, but they are worth very little if I cannot pronounce them correctly. They have a feature that will dictate the word for me, but most of the time it does not pronounce the entire word, but rather the last syllable. This app would easily get 4 stars if the developers fixed this bug.

Basic vocabulary is irrelevant
I’m not sure why I’m getting words like “hard drive” which is basic, elementary vocabulary. For this app to hold any value to me, I’d prefer challenging words that are not common in everyday language. The point of using this app is to expand upon the language base I already developed throughout my primary and secondary schooling.

Lukewarm
The app functions properly and does what it says it will do. But you would think an app with only one function would be more thorough. Does the word have Greek or Latin origin? Is there more than one definition? What are its synonyms? So I don’t have any complaints about the app in and of itself. Just seems like very lazy execution.

PAY TO PLAY
This app asks you to pay a $25+ subscription fee to gain any access, and only gives you 3 days as a trial. That is absolutely not enough time to get to know the program. I’m getting really annoyed with all these apps cropping up that may help me with furthering myself, and they’re all subscription with a ridiculous amount of money attached.

Problems still exist
I’ve been told that all the problems were solved with the newest update but they weren’t. Some of my flash cards still left empty with definition. I don’t know how to study like this, and started using other apps. I’m speechless after paid for a such a high price and got nothing. I just wish the app can get back to what it was before I paid.

Swiss Cheese? Feedback?? Kitchenware?! A joke
Purchased over a month ago for a new word a day. Was initially challenging but after about 3 weeks, the words became infuriatingly simply. I don’t understand how the vocabulary changed from worlds such as “pusillanimous” to “Swiss cheese”, “feedback”, “kitchenware”…. Looked for a difficulty setting and did not find one.
An absolute waste of $20.

Exorbitant subscription for an app with few features
First of all, this is not a free app, as the app store would indicate. You can’t use the app without signing up for a $20 subscription. I don’t mind paying for quality software, but this practice is deceptive. Frankly, it’s not very good either. I’d expect something that promotes learning through spaced repetition for this cost. But it has none of that.

Words are too easy
I’m on advanced setting and it’s giving me words like “lanky”. Not bad for children and I respect the developer’s hustle, but I wish I didn’t spend $20 on the annual subscription.
Advice to the dev: please add in a thesaurus so the app at least has some functionality beyond the daily word function. I would pay for that. The current version however I can’t recommend.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Nope
It's very easy to tell when an app lacks any actual value. If the developer REQUIRES that you sign up for a subscription BEFORE you are able to even try it out, they don't even believe that there is any value in their product. That expains why so many users duped into signing up, get charged even after they've cancelled their subscription.
Stupid business model. Worthless app. Dishonest, amoral company.

Too easy even at advanced level
Waste of my time because I have to receive and look at too many words to get any I don’t know. All the messages about don’t give up, you can become erudite are just annoying. They are not allowing me to express why I am not interacting with the app which is that the words are not challenging. One word in 10 or 20 at the advanced level might be new to me. Please offer a way to indicate need for higher challenge level

Biased mean daily words of evil!
This app is very biased and mean when it comes to the daily/hourly words that pop up in notifications. 9/10 words are related to negative/bad connotation if you are trying to learn new and motivational words. Some of the words are so annoying and confusing in terms of its meaning that it’s best to not use this app at all. You are better off deleting this app and read a random book instead - just simply Google any words that you don’t know.

Both a monumental failure and success
I used this app daily as I enjoyed creating collections on certain words I was integrating into my writings. Then after several weeks, the collections just disappeared, as well as my account. I spent a lot of time sifting through words, creating collections on their feeling or intent. Now, all my time is out the door- without any notice or reason from the app.
My advice, don’t invest time bookmarking words you like. Don’t even bother creating an account.

Why lie?
Downloaded the app assuming it would be like most other free apps and it would be free with limited functions. The app instead glued you fill out a weird questionnaire about your learning goals and vocabulary level, which I guess is fine, but then they want to charge you to use the app. Not to use the premium or the upgraded or the complete version, but the actual app. So, it’s not free, it’s set up so that people come into the app expecting something and you just didn’t need to do that, just make it a paid app. Just don’t even bother with the misleading next time
