It would be nice to see a Class Action Lawsuit against Acer for their refusal to repair a cracked lcd cover (near left hinge) on their notebooks. Acer customer support only states, "the laptop is out of warranty and they have not heard of this issue."
When researching the cracked cover problem online, it is evident that this is a common problem with many models of Acer notebooks. The replacement part costs $109.00, and you have to do it yourself. This is an Acer design flaw and the consumer should not have to pay for the repair (warranty or not).
Are there any attorneys out there willing to take on this issue?
I am the original poster to this forum. The new back I installed in 2010 finally cracked again last week and in the same location! Including this Laptop there are 4 Acers of this model in my family. ALL OF THEM HAVE CRACKED AT THE HINGE! If anyone reads this... do yourself a favor and AVOID Acer computers. The price may be appealing but the quality is not there! I have a 2004 HP Laptop that is still running strong with no defects. DO NOT BUY ACER! BUYER BEWARE!
I have an Acer [protected] and have the same problem. I leave it on my desk, rarey move it, only open and close it and both hinges are now broken. Acer will not help. Never buy another Acer.
Loosened my hinges by removing them and heating them with a propane torch to remove some of the tension (only have to heat them for a few seconds). Sadly when I put it back together I now have lost the lcd light!
Ordered a new board off ebay, hope that does it.
Here are some pics
I have theexacyt same carck on my acer 9410 left hinge. ACER computers and their support are terrible. Do not buy one.
I have the same issue. My cover where it attaches to the hinges broke completely. I removed the lcd cover and am now trying to design and build new cover for it. I'm considering what the best materials might be. Thinking about using a clay mold to form a fiberglass cover reinforced with metal strips. Still need to figure out how it will all attach together.
We have 2 9410Z's- BOTH have had the left hinge freeze up and crack the cover. I loosened the hinge by putting the hinge in a vise and prying the outside piece apart from around the hinge pin slightly with a screwdriver. Only problem was I loosened it a bit too much and now it won't stay up. Had to epoxy the cover together. Hoping to find new hinges soon.
Acer just sucks in general. Be glad you don't have a motherboard problem. I have an Aspire 5532, had it replaced under warranty and now it's dead again and of course, just out of warranty. Who wants to help me sue them? Their tech support in India is worthless.
I have an Acer 9410Z with the exact problem described. The right hinge has frozen up and the lid is cracked. Needless to say, I will never purchase another Acer product and I hope that people reading this thread will take these complaints into consideration in their own purchasing decision.
Replacement parts are unavailable at this time as well.
I have the same problem with the right hinge. I won't get an Acer again. While the computer works fine, I am disappointed that I can't even find a replacement part for this problem. I do have an IT person in the family who can do all work that I need on any of our computers, which saves a bundle.
I am actually looking to getting a Toshiba to replace the Acer 9410. I don't really need a 17" monitor.
If anyone knows where to even get a top cover for the 9410 I would appreciate hearing. You can e-mail me at gyingst@gmail.com
Thanks
I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 9410. The hinges have both frozen and the case cracked on both sides at the hinges.
Hey good to see this I have an acer 9410z and the left hinge broke completely right holds on. Now my dc charge port has broken; had to take the entire machine apart. Unbelievable and then the port is part of the motherboard. Are you kidding me? Will never get another acer. MAC or DELL for me only in the future!
Do NOT buy acer my screen cracked at the left hinge also, through no fault of mine. Now DC charging port has broken had to take the entire thing apart and the port is a part of the motherboard. Cannot even get to it without taking EVERY SINGLE SCREW out of the dang laptop. RIDICULOUS!
I have a same problem and no way to get parts too.
I have an ACER 9410 ... replaced hinges and cover once ... same issue ... definitely a design flaw ... expensive to replace (£126 - hinges and plastics).
Would not by ACER again if I can help it!
So how exactly do we get a class action suit going against acer?
Hi! I have gone through the forum and agree that problem is certainly a DESIGN FLAW with Acer. Mine cracked on the right hinge side near the start button. As usual, Acer India denied having a replacement part. Seems to be the most common complaint besides the Start Button breaking up.
Got the same problem, it first started at the right side near the powerbutton. I was travelling a lot so I had to close the laptop and open. After a while the left side broke to so the laptop is now standing still with the screen open. There is no way I can close it now. The 'funny' part is that I can just lift the screen up.
The hinges are very tight and are not able to close. I refuse to pay for repair even if my warranty run out. It is not my fault, it's a fault by Acer. Now i'm getting a Dell hope he will last more then 2 years.
I have a acer 9410z that the lcd back cover is cracked. No longer can open it or close it. Took it apart and the hinges are way to tight.
My acer is 3 years old and has never been misused and has no sign of wear.
The acer tech that told someone on here that the back cover breaks because we misuse it is so full of bull!
I repair laptops and buy and resale them also and I have never saw anything like this before. This is a very bad design and ACER knows about it but they are to cheap to do anything about it.
I will never buy a acer again and I will tell others not to buy from them.
Acer needs to stand behind there product and make this right because if they don't they are only hurting themselves and the people that work for them because with so any unhappy people they will lose more money in the long run because no one will want to buy from them again. Acer can not keep the doors open if they are not making money.
The lcd cover cost $79.00 plus shipping on a web site I just found but the cover is just going to break again unless you change the two hinges also because in all the sites I have been to I had read that hinges are locked up or real tight that's whats breaking the cover in the first place.
The hings are $34.00 plus shipping.
I think I will say goodby to acer and go with a sony.
I have the same exact problem you guys are describing, both hinges froze up and the plastic cracked and later broke, unbelievable.
I have had an ACER 9412 for 4 years and after 14-months same left hand side crack on LCD case cover - the photo almost identical to the problem I had. I ordered replacement parts (rear plastic, new hinges, etc) - over £100 and fitted myself as ACER said it was out of warranty and they would only repair at significant cost. All well for another 15-months and then exactly the same problem. Now I can't find the parts at anywhere near a reasonable repair cost. I contacted ACER and pointed this design flaw out to them ... same old "it is out of 1-year warranty you will need to take it to a service centre and pay for repair".
In the UK we have the Sale Of Goods Act - this should protect us for up to 6-years from purchase for design defects. The issues is that whilst it sounds nice to have this protection, UK law requires the complainant to prove it was a design flaw - in my view all these examples show it is - but I bet the burden of proof is higher and the costs prohibitive for an individual - so really the law is useless for consumers.
HOWEVER, WE CAN ALL DO SOMETHING - NEVER BUY ACER again ... and then tell everyone about our experiences ... I've switch to ASUS products and very VERY impressed.
same problem here
I have two Acer Aspire [protected] laptops and both of them have cracked at the left hinge. Reading the posts it appears that Acer is unwilling to acknowledge the breaking as their design problem. Too bad! Both of my units have functioned well and I had a good feeling about Acer products. After reading all these posts my feelings about Acer support have certainly been negatively affected. I have decided to add my comment to help show this is not an isolated incident. Hopefully a prospective Acer purchaser will see this site and make an alternate purchase. Thanks to the people who added comments about parts sources and repair techniques.
Where can you buy replacement parts for this design flaw on the lcd cover? Same area of the back cover has cracked on me as well after treating the laptop very well. Appears to have something to do with the large 17" lcd screen. Personally will never buy anything over 15" again. Completely unnecessary and too heavy and stiff.
http://www.skyline-eng.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=8313 ~ However it is out of stock and they want $200! You can almost buy a cheap toshiba laptop for that much. Acer Online Chat support is less than helpful and I've been given multiple links that end up nowhere. Sucks, as I apparently won't be able to have a mobile laptop any longer, bc of this issue.
I have had the same problem. First the left side cracked when the hinge froze up. I replaced both hinges as it was getting harder and harder to open the computer without cracking the rest of the case. I finally replaced both hinges but it lasted about a month before the right side cracked. Now if I want to use the computer i have to prop the screen up carefully because it is now detached from the rest of the case. I think it was a bad design to have the hinges so close to the edge of the case and Acer should be responsible. I have two other 17 inch computers and never had a problem with the case cracking.
Add me to the huge list of dissatisfied acer owners. Nearly impossible to find replacement lid. I did find one place online that wanted $129 for lid and hinges. Looked like it was coming from China. Sorry, too much money to put into this POS. I will drill the lid and use bolts and washers. Better than vice grips I have been using... (wife hates the look).
Hinge was stiff from date purchase. Hinge locked up now. Same left side cracked case above the hinge, broke all the way through to both sides now. Laptop is a good working laptop if I can find new parts I would love it! I picked it up by that area and it slightly cracked at first and has gotten much worse with minimal movement. It hasn't been shut for over a year. At least now that it broke completely I can close it again...
It's been a year since my Acer 9410 back cover broke, (same place as everyone) still looking for the Lcd Back Cover & Hinges replacement every where I look it seems to be out of stock I can not believe there's not a action class suit for this issue, is obvious that thousands of people have had this issue and Acer made millions on selling thousands of this model. I hope this thread continues until something is done!
Thank you!
I also have an Acer 9410 and have slowly watched as the left and now the right side at the hinge has cracked. I'm afraid to close it for fear that it will be the last time I do so. What a piece of crap. Obviously Acer must know about this and refuses to deal with it. I'm considering fixing it myself if I can find reasonably priced parts. Anyone know where I can find the cover as well as new, more flexible hinges?
I have an Acer Extensa 7220 laptop which is now nearly 4 years old. I have twice experienced the problem of cracks appearing on the cover close to the left hinge. When my laptop was only 9 months old a crack suddenly appeared at the left hinge. Fortunately it was still under guarantee and Acer replaced the cover free. Yesterday I noticed that a small hairline crack has now appeared close to the left hinge. I have always been extremely careful with my laptop and have always stored it in a case when not in use. I've never once left it sitting around. I would never buy an Acer laptop again as I think it is highly overrated as a brand name! Apart from the problem with cracks my hard drive has also crashed twice. I was led to believe that Acer was the leading make on the market. but sadly from my persnal experience this has not been the case.
Purchased Aspire 9410Z and LCD back cover broke at the left hinge a year later. Repaired myself (it was out of warranty) but repair only lasted for a few months. Very common problem, that's why the replacement parts are out of stock unless you want to pay $70-$150 for the cover. Not worth it, I have seen better (used) laptops go for $100+ online!
Acer should be reprimanded for not addressing this issue; they should treat their customers better. I will not recommend an Acer to anyone else.
I think Acer, eMachines, and Gateway are now operated under the same roof.
(based on my recovery software documentation having all three names on it)
Hi, I have the same issue with my acer [protected] laptop. I too want to go against acer canada and go to a class action lawsuit please.
Please if anyone wants to go for it or know about it or has already gone in class action lawsuit in canada, please let me know.
Thanks, really a great help here on this site for this issue.
Thanks

I have the exact same problem! My hinge broke after about 6 months, now the power supply won't work... Other than those two issues it works perferctly.
I have an acer aspire V5. I purchased it in September of 2013. I was trying to shut the laptop in January of 2016, and I heard a loud "pop." The screen of my laptop is cracked, and the shell under the left hinge is cracked. The crack goes right around the adapter plug in. Acer now tells me that the computer is out of warranty. When I bought the computer, from Micro Center, I purchased a 3 year warranty for $179.00. They have denied my request for service saying that I dropped the laptop. I did not drop the laptop ever. They say I should have purchased an Accident/Damage Protection Warranty.
I spend $900 on the 9410Z (the Z meaning it had a built in webcam). I have the same issue two cracks back screen case due to seized hinges. The front bezel was damaged too. The screws went threw the front bezel because the hinges were seized.
I bought these part for repair.
2 Hinges
2 hinge arms
1 front bezel
I could not find a back case for the screen anywhere after 3 years of searching and back ordering.
The five parts I did get cost around $150.
I spent nine hundred dollars on the 9410Z laptop. I have the same issue two cracks along the back screen case due to seized hinges. The front bezel was damaged too. The screws went threw the front bezel because the hinges were seized. This is from normal everyday opening and closing of the laptop.
I bought these parts for repair.
2 hinges
2 hinge arms
1 front bezel
I could not find a back case for the screen anywhere after three years of searching and back ordering.
The five parts I did get cost a total of around one-hundred fifty dollars.
