food okay, service at dinner lousy
The service is good if you go during lunch when there are friendly waitresses and they are compelled to show off, for instance, to the government workers. One of them, who is the daughter of the proprietor, is very fixated on money. Twice she did not want to refund me a larger bill after I paid as if the change should be her tip. This is not her tip. I offered it to the other waitress who was more attentive. Next time I split my change in half, which she also took as an insult that I did not offer her the exclusive right to the change but instead shared it with the other waitress. I knew she took it as an insult because the next time I came in, and I was happy for them for this, it was New Year's Day and they were busy, so she hurriedly seated me. She did not return my greeting of Happy New Year's day even when I made a point of greeting her when seating, and also when leaving. Yet she made a very obsequious point of wishing the Caucasian visitors "Happy New Year!" whenever one left. (I do not think she bothered to wish the African American visitors "Happy New Year" either.) She seemed to ignore or take for granted the customers of Asian descent. They are very concerned about money, for instance, when I lunched I heard one refer to me as just a $10 income. I realize I may have not been ordering that much for dinner since I only ordered a $14 vegetarian. She sort of made fun of that also that I would order Buddhist delight. Then the dish it came in was dirty! The glass dish on the outside was greasy like they had reused the dish from another customer. All the teapots seem to be missing their teapot caps which is pretty bizarre since the knobs only cost like less than a dollar since they screw into the top. The Buddhist delight dinner was very mediocre. I know because I've eaten a lot of Chinese food, including in Hong Kong, and among the best restaurants. They seemed to think that Buddhist Delight would be saucy Chop-Suey without the meat, but with just a tad more mushrooms of various type, but not much more than that. Also, to save money, many more Chinese restaurants are hiring Latino cooks who took a course in Chinese cooking. I've seen several places where the Latinos are doing the cooking in the back, which saves them money. I would not write this up---I really wish them well---but when they are not very nice and especially to Chinese customers, it's quite disheartening. Talking about how much money they hope to make off of you, and treating you with respect only according to your appearance (apparent class or income or race) is discriminatory and tactless.
