My husband was admitted to emergency Netcare Pholoso Hospital on 17 December 2023 after a cycling accident. He was disorientated and a bit incoherent so I asked the nursing staff to please ask the doctor dealing with him to phone me with an update as soon as he had seen him as I live in Johannesburg and was not able to get to Polokwane.
The attending doctor didn't bother to call me. The following day my husband was scheduled for surgery and as I was many kilometres away I again asked the doctor to please call and update me after the operation and the prognosis. Again no response to my request. After numerous calls to the staff in ICU who said they couldn't help and couldn't give me any information I was at my wit's end.
My husband said he was given a blanket to use to dry himself after washing as he had not yet been cleaned of blood or dirt after his accident, and was told that they didn't not have towels.
He had a very bad night that night after the operation and with the machines constantly blaring, he tried several times to call the nurses on duty to see why the machines were beeping and was then told that he should have called them because one of the tubes had come out.
He then asked to be discharged from ICU and the doctors threatened him as I had already called Netcare head office with these complaints. The doctor than only spoke to me and asked why I had complained and was extremely hostile even after I asked him to understand my concerns about being so far away. He was discharged after signing the disclaimer and given no medication to endure the trip to Johannesburg where he was immedicately the following morning admitted to Milpark ICU.
I would like to say that Milpark was a relief after the treatment and facilities experienced at Pholoso Hospital, which is a disgrace. Having to pay medical aid fees for a hospital that can in no way be construed as a private hospital doesn't make sense. The staff, doctors, facilities are absolutely disgusting, and this is not the first I have heard about complaints about this hospityal and its staff.
Desired outcome: Fix what is supposedly a private hospital and what we pay exhorbitant fees for. I would like feedback on what is being done about training doctors, nursing staff, etc.
