Becoming my favorite app except
PLEX does what iTunes should do. It makes all my media on my home server available on any platform anywhere. I've got it on my iPhone, my iPad, two macs, 3 Apple TV's, a Roku TV. a Sony Bravia smart TV.
I can listen to MY entire collection in my phone...outside...at the gym...on the road. There's the rub, needs integrating with cars that allow iPod control from their nav systems for hands-free use; needs to be on CarPlay.
But all this is possible for music, movies (non-DRM protected), and TV shows (ditto DRM limitation). I have EyeTV and capture my TV off the air to my Mac and process them to iTunes.
This app does not use iTunes to get to the media but goes right to the folders where it is located. iTunes needn't be on the host machine. This will also work with a NAS.
My stuff where and when I want it. Perfect!

4/12 Addendum
OK, big problem, frequently new music added to the PLEX server only shows up on ATV4 as a cover. When you select the cover on Apple TV you get a blank screen with the album name and date but no tracks. Others on the forum are having the same problem but none of us have a fix that works. These tracks show up in every other app (iphone/iPad/Mac...even Roku) but not in the Apple TV app. PLEX has NO factory support. They leave it all to forums so when their software IS THE PROBLEM ... there is no recourse and no place to go. Changing from 5 stars to 2 until PLEX fixes THEIR problem.

12/21 Addendum
PLEX needs a music only app for CarPlay with search and scroll capabilities appropriate for the road...ideally with voice command capability. The “perfect” music player for CarPlay simply does not yet exist. Desperately needed !
Great idea but too many frustrations
I’ve had a plex pass for six months now and have completely converted all of my media to the system. It works for the most part on my hard-wired network at home. Where it is really lacking is on wireless networks, whether in my house or out and about. I’m sitting in my house right now waiting for the latest episode of This Is Us to play on my phone. I’ve cut the quality down to 480p at 1.5mbs and am still waiting for the show to start playing five minutes after pushing play. I’m the only person on my network and nothing else is using WiFi. Ironically I can use Netflix with zero delay. Why does Netflix work and plex not?
Couple this with the frustrations in using plex in general and I’m seriously rethinking whether going this route was the right choice.
I’ve read in the boards that grid scheduling is coming. It needs to be here now! Does anyone know how to find what channel a show was recorded on after the show has been recorded? I’m recording old episodes of This Old House and am getting the same episode 5 - 10 times because it’s playing on different stations, but I don’t know which stations because that data isn’t saved with the program.
Also, when I have a conflict for three series I’m recording how do I manually adjust which show I want to record? The only way I’ve found to change the shows that plex thinks I want is by canceling an entire season of one show to get that one episode of the other show to record. There should be a way to cancel just one episode of a show without changing an entire series.
Cmon guys. Do we really need a buggy commercial editor when so many of the basic functions of a DVR are missing? Please put ALL of your resources on grid scheduling. If that doesn’t show up soon I’m gonna bail.
Ok but a few issues
You must pay a $4.99 fee to activate device streaming but it seems to be per Apple ID as I was able to activate on my iPhone and iPad but only pay the fee once. The fee does not work across family sharing, my husband had to pay it again separately for his devices.
Airplay isn’t an option with this app. Sometimes I can get it to work by mirroring my phone to my 3rd gen Apple TV but it’s clunky, buffers/freezes, or stops completely, and you have to keep your phone screen on and you can’t switch apps. (An Airplay option would let you turn off the screen or switch apps and still play the content to the TV as well as control it with the Apple TV remote.) If you have a newer gen Apple TV, the Plex app works fine for it so far so no airplay isn’t as big as an inconvenience.
An even bigger Airplay issue is when I use a Bluetooth speaker to listen. It is extremely difficult to get the app to play through my Bluetooth speaker. (No other apps have the issues.) The app will randomly stop transmitting to the speaker, even though nothing has changed and there’s no reason for it to stop playing in the speaker, and suddenly switch to the device speaker. I have to forget the speaker and reconnect it multiple times before it works and if I pause the content I have to do it all over again. Only this app causes that to happen.
It also randomly freezes completely and several times I have to force quit the app and try to get it to play again. My other streaming apps don’t have as many problems even with live tv.
Also, when you play something the video doesn’t always show up, like the sound will play but the video doesn’t come up at all or it takes awhile to appear.
Lastly, this app doesn’t always keep your progress perfectly tracked. It can be off by several minutes and sometimes it’ll lose it completely and you end up starting from the beginning, not really a problem just a nuisance sometimes.
Problems but with potential
Wildly inconsistent, although the apple plex app is much better than on my droid bionic. I run plex through a central server which distributes through an ABUS music distribution system by JAMO. The online discussions are not easy to follow for troubleshooting certain issues, but I finally figured out some of my issues:
1. Choosing which device to stream music. This is especially important to me because of my house music distribution system. Plex seems like a perfect choice because now I have remotes to access and play my music (smart phone, ipad). On this issue I couldn't figure out how to access my plex server and keep the resources on the server which connects to the Abus distribution hub. Neither my droid or ipad could find a player and would only stream music to the device accessing the server. Finally figured out that on the server both the plex server AND the plex player have to be open. Then the accessing device gives the choice of where to stream.
2. Plex player gives error when opened using windows Remote Desktop. A huge pain to me because my server containing plex has no monitor or keyboard.
3. Toggling remotes between droid and ipad. Music on my server started with one device being stopped or paused with the other is hit or miss. However, multiple devices accessing the server can play independently.
4. Genre searches didn't work until apple itunes software loaded onto server. Genres don't match iTunes or wmp. Weird...
5. Too many freezes on both droid and ipad. Would not access music on server without reboot of devices.
6. 'Now playing' only shows music streamed to the accessing device, not music streamed and left on the server.
7. Creating playlists without using iTunes.
8. Too many time outs. Then plays with time out screen showing.
9. Remote menus? What are they? Don't appear to be functional.
9. Photographs do not display consistently on droid, but do on the iPad.
O.K that's enough.
Issue since update
Update 08/20:
So after many updates that failed to address the issue below, and my being unable to find fixes for it on forums etc. I would constantly check to see if the issue had been resolved and this included deleting the app from all iPhones and and iPads then reinstalling it over and over. It became almost a daily ritual…very inconvenient and annoying. Well today I was going through that routine and surprise surprise, I was able to choose a channel from my OTA live TV guide and it PLAYED! In the future I will be very selective about updating this app until I check the reviews for a while after implementation.
Since the most recent update, all iOS devices are unable to play OTA live tv channels. When I choose a station it attempts to play it but quickly stops and returns me to the guide page. It still works when I use my Apple TV 4K (tvOS), and worked on all iPads and iPhones just before update. Please address this issue as it is one of the primary functions that drew me to plex in the first place. Update: 08/03 So a new app update was pushed out today, (08/03), but it didn’t address the issue people are having with the live over the air tv portion of the app on iOS devices ( all iPads and iPhones). Bring up the menu/guide choose a program and it tries to play but just brings you back to the menu/guide or just hangs up. It works on my Apple TV’s and worked on phones and iPads before the second to last update. Please Please Please fix. New update 08/09: New update and still no fix for live OTA playback issue on all iOS devices…no change Another update 08/11…another fail at fixing this ongoing issue. Still cannot play OTA live tv feeds from my antenna on any iOS device. Used to work before one of your updates broke it…. 08/17: new update…same garbage. No fix for over the air live tv play on any iOS device. I guess if not many people use this feature on these client devices then it’s not worth it to fix even though one of your updates broke it.
Roku app making me force Direct Stream 10 bit HEVC to avoid unnecessary transcode?
I'm TRYING to figure out how my go to PLEX CLIENT, while I gave a seemingly ATV 4K HDR with an insanely powerful A10X chip but then the lack of mkv support caused the need for a demux of 10 bit HEVC that my QNAP NAS drive's Intel Bay Trail 15W TDP CPU (w/basically Intel 3000 HD) just couldn't handle. Meanwhile I also bought a PS4 Pro hoping that despite it stating no support for HEVC, but wondered if the because the GPU "based on Polaris architecture" and the clock bump to 2.1Ghz, it might someday get a software update to leverage a hybrid decode of 10 bit HEVC.
Well... suddenly my PS4 Pro is playing low bitrate 1080p 10 bit HEVC and my Apple TV suddenly was no longer causing my NAS CPU to spike to 99% and is so low I can only figure some updates from either INTEL or PLEX are allowing direct stream and demuxing in some way it's now like having hardware acceleration and no decompressing of any 10 bit HEVC 1080p MKV w/AAC 5.1-7.1 attempts by my Linux based NAS suddenly?
Unfortunately over Thanksgiving I drug my trusty Roku Ultra was unnecessarily requiring my NAS transcode every 10 bit HEVC movie? I tried EVERYTHING and I had finally try a Force Direct Play to stop it! I tried two different Vizio 1080p Smart TVs and a 46" Samsung 1080p LED and ALL required I transcode all 10Bit 1080p HEVC material!? Then I switched from "auto" to "force" Direct Play my CPU dropped back to the 5-7% I'd been used to until now?! I even have to force one Vizio with SRS abilities to Dolby Digital and kill the "auto" detect as well?! Meanwhile my Apple 4K HDR and PS4 Pro can at least suddenly can PLAY lower bitrate 10Bit 1080p AAC or AC3 5.1-7.1 MKV without hitting my CPU anymore?
Should I be grateful two devices are doing things they previously could not with my weak Bay Trail QNAP NAS PLEX server or be upset that whatever they did, the Roku app is NOT okay. I tried everything. FORCING Direct Play was only way to Remote Stream over the holidays. Sadly it's been a few months not using it to know when or how this change occurred?
I’m done with iTunes!
In the last 5 years I have been so frustrated with iTunes, I have finally considered the switch to something like Plex. Here’s a few of those reasons. One day I go to open my iTunes library from my desktop machine running Mojave just to add some artwork that iTunes wasn’t recognizing and organize the library a little better and then it struck me. My Mac Mini was running High Sierra and couldn’t be upgraded to Mojave since it’s a bit too old. Which means, when I open the iTunes library again on my older MacMini running as my server, it will not be perfectly compatible since my newer version of iTunes I opened the library with modifies some key files which make most of my files disappear! What the heck?! I go to open again on my desktop Mac running Mojave, and they are still there. So, I’m now screwed. I must now open the library on my desktop machine if I am to have “whole house” music and media. I would have to upgrade my Mac mini to a newer machine costing between $600 and $1800! No freaking way! Here’s the next reason. And this one is disturbing! I spent weeks pulling in my entire CD collection as full audio quality AIF files at 16bit/44.1 since the music is important. At some point in time I must have agreed to some Apple nonsense that tells them what’s in my library and while I’m doing some server clean up I notice all of my music library files have been auto converted by Apple to their stupid .m4a file format! Are you kidding me?! Apple has taken the liberty to screw with my original rips of my own CD that I bought in a store years ago?! Unbelievable. That was the last straw. And yes there’s more but if you’ve been using iTunes, you know what they are. The answer is Plex. Plex has everything I’ve ever dreamed of in a media server solution and it’s been executed with great thought and it pretty much runs on any platform! And just buy the full Plex pass and own it for a lifetime and give Plex the price they deserve for such a great ecosystem for managing your media. I will never go back to iTunes. And they crazy thing is this... I have been a hard core Apple advocate since O.S. 6 on a Mac Classic!
It makes the PLEX experience
At first I got this for the iPhone, but when I picked up an iPad the experience was so much better. I just wish I knew the commands better because I am probably only using a fraction of them. It would actually be great to have access to the media manager from this app, and of course a finer-grained fast forward/reverse would be nice.
I find that the freezes up quite often, and sometimes it cannot find my wireless network when the network is just fine. My biggest regret is that when PLEX crashes (way too often on HD content) the PLEX app has no keyboard I can use to interact with my mini. This forced me to purchase another keyboard app, which I can actually use to control PLEX.
When the app works it is great but it isn't as stable as it should be and, as mentioned, it really needs a keyboard so that I can interact with the computer when PLEX crashes.
Update since 3.3 and PLEX Home Theater:
There are several issues that cropped up with this release that are disconcerting. First, with this release the developers abandoned PLEX Home Theater w/o telling paying customers who either had not, or do not want to 'upgrade' to PLEX Home Theater. that would rate a loss of a star. Second, getting to the navigation and control screen takes more, not less, effort, and is undocumented with the app. They provide the address to help pages but it isn't a navigable link so getting to the help pages is painful. Third, and this is not so much a problem with the app as it is with PHT, the default skin is very difficult to navigate, and the Aeon skin became available after the PHT conversion, so for a while the app was almost useless. With the Aeon skin, and once you become familiar with the new app interface, things are better, and the changes to the Aeon skin are good (though the search keyboard can be improved and buttons for common things like subtitles would be nice). I briefly knocked the app down to 1 star but now I've raised it to 3.
October 20 update: I returned from a trip to find that my PHT player no longer shows up as selectable. I may be able to control the player with a ‘remote’ app but that is why I purchased the PLEX iOS app. Some might tell me to ‘upgrade’ to PLEX Media Player, but I really love the Aeon Anoobie skin and hate what the PLEX folks deem as an improvement with their standardized, homogenized, boring skin. Back to a single star.
The perfect server! And MORE!
UPDATE! I’ve been using Plex as my media server for years (see below) but now they’re streaming their own movies!?! Wha?!?! And the movies they’re streaming are actually awesome! Tons of classics (enjoying Apocalypse Now) right now. The movies they have aren’t on any other streaming service. They just made the best even better. I already had the Plex app installed on my TV’s so my library along with Plex’s new library pretty much just eliminated the need for my other streaming services. It still connects instantly and effortlessly to all my devices, bringing my library wherever I go. My library just tripled thanks to Plex’s streaming! Yes, there’s ads, but not excessive, and a small price to pay for these classic gems!
What don't I love about Plex! The app(s) is amazing. I absolutely love that it consolidates and organizes my entire media library, which is extensive! I love how it downloads the metadata for my movies and shows, displaying the cover box, summary, rating... Everything! And finally a reliable app that lets you add subtitles! Even my 5 year old knows how to use it. It streams flawlessly to my Apple TV, and plays almost instantly and without buffering over my Cellular data. I've downloaded it to all my devices, even my Samsung TV. I have tons of movies, a lot I don't remember, and it really helps to see info on the movie without having to switch back and forth between IMDB. Hubby said it turned my library into Netflix! and a neat little feature I just noticed after correctly separating my movies and TV Shows- it plays the show's theme music while you're browsing for an episode! Plus they're separated by season with synopsis of each episode making finding what you're looking for easy. Not to mention the "shuffle" option, making watching shows like Tales From the Crypt random and fun! The "on deck" feature is great, showing everything we've watched recently on ANY device, allowing you to pick up exactly where you left off instantly, settings in tact!
My short review turned into a long gush, but hey. I'm a huge fan. The app is more than worth the price tag. If my 2 and 5 year olds can figure it out (browsing by cover photos) I'm a happy camper! I just wish they would install it into the Apple TV to save me a step! Any streaming problems is no fault of the app nor the server, it's the Apple TV dropping connection. Which makes my Samsung TV my new go-to for movies! Thank you Plex! Goodbye Air Media Center!
Good app, Poor support
Now that the app is working as desired it is an excellent app. I bought this primarily for the remote access but it took hours to get it to work due to the poor outdated online support. Read the lowest rated review and it descrbes a lot of things I went through to get it to work. I eventually stumbled on the solution I needed somewhere in the all over the road Plex support sites. I didn't book mark the answer and Im sure it would take me hours to find it again.
The problem is, what is at the forefront of how to set it up for accessing the Plex servers remotely talks about setting up port foward in the router and setting the IP in the app to direct to the Plex server on you PC. The steps involved were specific for Apple but for Windows you have to do a lot of self education. It turns out even the Apple instructions will leave you hanging. I was able to translate the Apple instructions to Windows and it still didn't work. I have an older wireless router and even considered buying a newer one like the negative reviewer did. I finally got the app, when trying to connect to my Plex server, to give me an error saying there was a problem with authenication. This told me I was at least making the connection. According to the instructions, setting up a password was optional and if I understood it right you had to do this with 3rd party software. A search of Plex sites using parts of the error message took me to recent forum posts stating that with the most recent up date you had to set up a Myplex account and sign on in both the Plex server and the Plex Ios app. It didnt say anything about putting check marks on a couple things in the Plex server sign in window but once I did that, boom, the app was working as advertised.
I am happy with it now but I was about to delete it from my Iphone and chalk it off as a wasted five bucks. Hopefully if they update the app and make changes in the future they will take a few minutes and update thier support site as well. If there had been clear and consise instrucions, the average person could probably have this up and running in no time. If that was the case I would have given this app 5 stars.
By the way, I was led to Plex after buying an LG smart TV that uses Plex and requires installing the Plex Server for some of the Smart TV features. I am getting some error messages on the TV that are Plex related when trying to play some Plex media apps and I am getting the same dead end results trying to find the cause. Doing a Google search on the errors shows the message in the suggestion drop down after typing just a few characters. This shows that the error is being searched quite a bit on Google. Hopefully I will stumble on to the solution to these error messages somewhere in the Plex "support".
Plex, what are you doing??
I had to write a review as of this last update, end of May . The podcasts are great to finally have, but the new iOS interface is ABYSMAL. To think I was excited about the “customization” options that they described in the release notes. It turns out the “customization” simply means adding, removing, or reordering all of the useless, unnecessary content “rows” that Plex is so obsessed with, such as “recently added”, “recently aired”, “top movies with ——“. Really!? Then you have the individual library sections, such as movies, TV shows, etc., whichever libraries you’ve created on your server. The splash page for these individual libraries is a JOKE! There is no customization inside these library splash pages. You have a top “on deck” row, with posters, then a single line “category” button for “all TV shows, etc,” followed by a single line button for Playlists, then more poster based content rows, like the above mentioned useless descriptions. Looking at it is like being able to see a fart. All this cloudy, randomness billowing around with no room for my eyes to breathe! I can’t focus on one thing! If I only have 1 item “on deck” that row, which takes the top ONE THIRD of the screen becomes a useless waste of space with only a single poster. Then as I scroll down, I see repeated items listed in the various poster based category rows, since that item meets the criteria to be in each row. It’s a design nightmare! Even the last version was better, where I could select my library with a large tile, then permanently select between 2 options at the bottom, “discover”, and “browse”. Discover would show the useless poster based category rows, while browse would let me see all my media alphabetically (or in any other sort order) and let me find the item myself, the MUCH preferred way for me. Frankly, I LIKE seeing all of items and having to scroll through them. I’ve spent HOURS and HOURS carefully curating my ripped disc collection, customizing the poster choices and such. Seeing all of these beautiful, colorful posters is like looking at fruits of my labors. Every time the list gets bigger because I add a new title, it only adds to my joy over my hard work and growing collection. The category rows trying imitate Netflix and other streaming sites is utterly USELESS in this regard, particularly because my collection is small enough that I know where everything is. Plex has now made the process to get to my desired screen that much uglier and bloated. I really didn’t think they could have stepped backwards from the last interface. The solution is easy, copy the Plex Media Player app for the PC! This interface is the epitome of balance between the two approaches to library viewing and I LOVE it. The last interface was actually closer to PMP. This recent update is a step away, and it’s hideous. Please get back on track.
Plex Complaints 11
Plex tv (or lack thereof)
There are too many dates, issues and citations to list. The Nvidia Shield Pro version (Android) is unusable. It may work for a while, but then all of a sudden all of your database you painstakingly built will just be gone. No way to connect to the server or even tell if it's running (the documentation and forums are all incorrect, misleading and incomplete - but ultimately simply do not work). I cannot get to my server, so I'm left with uninstalling the whole mess and rebuilding it from scratch. This takes an entire weekend with my media library, and it is no joke. Their lack of phone support is inexcusable. Their lack of common sense inclusions in their documentation is inexcusable. They have no concern whatsoever for your time. This product was obviously written by a bunch of 5-year olds who are better at legos. There are enough features there to make you want to invest your time - DON'T. You WILL regret ever installing ANY of it. The fact that they are given a 100% legit rating here is comical. Technically they're doing nothing illegal, it's all on you for using it, and there's no accountability from them - but that's not illegal. I despise companies like this.
Desired outcome: Tell me how to:- log into and see/configure my server ("connection refused")- understand WHY my database just disappeared.- determine the status of my server - in ANY useful manner.- offer some alternative to uninstalling everything
Movies play before showing descriptions
I would use this app more if it didn’t immediately launch the movies before giving a look at the description. And, when I get a Plex email, I have to avoid checking out the movie links because a movie will launch before I even know what it’s about. And trying to go backwards to get the description requires much trial and error. Zero stars if I could.

Never gets better
Movies freeze all the time. Look, I understand buffering. I get it. But these movies are freezing and wont move forward at all. I’m in my own home every other device and app not related to plex have no problems. Just plex. So Plex is the problem. There is no way to kick it or bump it. It’s just done. I can start all the movies I want, but they all freeze.

Plex is pure garbage
Doesn’t work on iOS; it fails to log me in. On the rare occasion it does work, it’ll play videos... but the video that plays is always wrong (i.e. it’ll say “season 2 ep 2” title but play season 8 ep 6). Every episode is different and wrong, and it’s not consistent like “ep 2 is always actually ep 22, 3 is 33, etc” but instead pure random wrongness. I can’t stand it. Same problem for my smart tv app. There’s gotta be a ton of alternatives that’ll do this basic crap without as much hassle.

Bad service, delete app I will
My friend signed me up with unlimited pass to plex media and he paid for life time membership and my app stopped working so I was told by apple to uninstall it and reinstall it. I did that and now it wants to charge me $4.99 a month or $149.00 one time. No thank you, I uninstalled it again after sending this. I am through with plex media and jacking prices up when lifetime has already been purchased at lowered rate. I even signed in with my account... limited 1 minute... bleh avoiding plex at all cost.

It never stays connected
I usually only get to watch about 3 or 4 episodes of a show before it loses the connection when I’m casting it to my Google Nest Hub and it won’t start up again (I like to have it on there while I’m playing a game on my TV). I have to close the app and leave it alone for a while. I don’t have this problem with any other app. It also will just randomly close out the picture-in-picture when I’m playing it on my phone. I have more issues with it than I can remember at the moment, but this app is very frustrating.

Wouldn’t recommend to anyone without infinite free time
The number of times Plex won’t work on Apple TV but will work on my phone. Or won’t work on my phone but works fine on the computer that hosts the Plex server. Or won’t work anywhere and you’re wondering why there were no notifications about the server app or the NAS or wherever the problem lies.
And that’s why Plex really fails. Because unless you have infinite free time to troubleshoot the dozens of was it can fail, or infinity times the number of people you share it with or in your family, it will be a constant frustration. Just buy a project car or something for your garage if you want to burn more time working on than enjoying a thing.

App still crashes
After multiple updates and even updating phones, Plex still does not behave well. I have the following problems.
1. frequent crashes right at startup or during play, Plex will crash (just returns to the Home Screen). It will take a couple starts in order to be able to use it.
2. Music player does not behave well in the car/Bluetooth. Repeat one will cause the app to not play, will lose artist/track information, will take a long time when track skipping (in excess of 2 minutes), and again, occasionally crash, this is evident when switching from Wi-Fi to cellular (leaving home).
I am a lifetime Plex Pass user. I’m considering switching to something else.

Very bad app for audio
So I left a review on here earlier and now magically disappeared so I am having to write it once more.
The problem is that the audio portion of Plex does not work well at all. It doesn’t retain any meta-data and most of the tracks show up without an art artist or album or title no matter how many times you enter this information and save it. This makes the audio portion off the app useless.I got a response from the developer saying that some other people had similar issues and if I wanted to add my experience on the thread. I have already done this in the forms without a response along with multiple other people.
Once they fix this I will be happy to change it to a five star review because it genuinely is a decent platform for video. But I paid for a lifetime pass and that includes using the audio portion

Bad Joke level customer service and Tech Support
Have had my plex account hacked over a month ago and I’m STILL dealing with customer service trying to restore full control over it. Service is good, app is good, but if you ever have a problem and need help? Man you are screwed at that point.
Update: Have had my account restored using a method not in the list of methods given to me by customer support which have an inaccurate list of such methods those were attempted only to be shot down, and I went down the list.
The only 2 methods they will accept is
1. payment details: which would be easy but who keeps the records of a sub 200 dollar 2 year old purchase that was not even bought on your credit card to begin with?
2. If there is a change of email you get emailed a link with a token in it. Which is what I was able to find. Don’t get me wrong I am very happy to have my account restored, but if there was a magic bullet to fix this which there was, why wouldn’t you go there first and save an entire month of frustration.
I will say that I really enjoy the app itself it’s all but revolutionized my entertainment, but customer service needs more money and the folks need to be retrained as they do not seem to be very knowledgeable, my issue used as a case in point.

Why won’t plex fix the issue with actor listing?
Update 1/30- the ‘your media your way’ is a distant memory. The core functionality of playing your media has taken a distant back seat to streaming ad supported and subscription services and pimping your info to ad services and social media. Fixes and bugs go largely unaddressed, users are deliberately mislead (like the fact the fact plex caches the metadata/we don’t get it directly, the RT or IMDB ratings bug thats been asked 100’s times and totally ignored etc). Getting Cloudflare setup for Emby as we speak.
Update 5/30 - wow have things changed with time. My beloved Plex, my favorite software since 2010 has lost its way. The iOS is symbolic of the recent shift in priorities, cast/actors hasn’t worked in more than a year. It’s list three actors which is fine; however not the starring cast but in alphabetical order. So you get 3 no name actors listed because their name starts with an ‘A’.

There is no better media server/client software built. The transcoding engine is smooth as silk. Coupled now with some ability for traffic shaping, and requiring relatively little processing power the ability to serve media to friends and family all over the country is awesome.
The fact that it's core functionality is totally free is extraordinary. I don't use many of the Plex Pass features, but it was money well spent regardless as it's become the corner stone of our family's entertainment (I do like access to beta releases). Well done.
