unauthorized automatic renewal rippoff
First of all the site was useful in finding people looking for an apartment to share. I had to subscribe to their services to communicate with the other Roomster members. I authorized only for a 3 day subscription for something like $9.99. That was OK. After three days they automatically renewed my subscription for a month at $29.99! I am sure they had some small print which I may not have noticed where unless cancelled by me will proceed with automatic renewal. The interesting part is that it is not an automatic renewal of another 3 days but a month! I can't believe the rippoff I went through. Be aware of it if you use roomster.com. Make sure that you login and check your account history and cancel the subscription once you are done with the services.

the website is designed to charge unsuspecting consumers for additional memberships
I signed in on day 3 of my subscription planning to cancel. When I logged in to find out you had already charged me for 30 more days. Looking at the terms, I was about 3 hours later than 72 hour cut off, all because I didn't get to take care of my personal computing needs in time to cancel before it was automatically renewed. I am a medical student traveling for rotations- I do not have access to a computer to take care of personal matters during the day while I am in clinic. The moment I got home, I tried to take care of this only to see I had already been charged. I have been recommending their site to my peers who also need to travel for rotations. I will no longer do this, and I am going to inform those that I have recommended the site to about your ruthless attitude toward customers. The website is designed to charge unsuspecting consumers for additional memberships and it works because no one ever reads the fine print. This is borderline fraudulent and most certainly unethical. I have found their customer service department to be very rude and short with their responses. Please pay attention to these reviews and do not use this site!
Exactly same situation. They should state a 72 hour subscription if this is how they want to run their business. Yes, 3 days is 72 hours but in the world of online subscriptions, if you start on the 1st of a month your renewal should start 3 days later on the 4th. Or at least renew at midnight. Furthermore, if they want us to believe that part of our money goes to keeping their site full of serious inquiries then they should charge to post a profile not when you need to respond to messages. Anybody could post random pictures of house.
unsuspecting customers will incur a $30 automatic renewal fee

I called the phone number listed for this company because of the problems connecting to the website and logging in,
and a lady answered with a loud "Hello". So I thought I may have had the wrong number. Is this a company run out of someone's garage or something?
rip off, scam, unethical!
This site is an absolute rip-off.. Stay away i've never encountered such unethical business in my life. Paid $6 for a one week subscription and authorized for no more charges be posted on my account, they've charged me $29.99 two different times and they have no phone number to contact, and won't respond to any of my emails. This is a rip off, find a way to make an honest living not ripping off college students who don't have $60 to throw out the window. Stay away from roomster!
Roomster.com is a total rip-off. A one week subscription should be just that. You shouldn't have to hunt and search the "fine print" to find out they will auto-renew. It's intentionally misleading. Legit businesses don't hide how they conduct their business. Their customer service is non-existent and the fact they make it almost impossible to contact them if you have a problem further shows they're scammers.
unauthorized withdrawal of funds
I thought I signed up for a 3-day subscription for $5.99 to help me find a roommate. I did not find a roommate using this site, and it did not seem like I was going to. So after the three days was over, I figured that I did not have to do anything else since my subscription was over. WRONG. I just discovered in my bank statements that Roomster.com has been charging me for an automatic renewal at a monthly cost of $29.95. Over the last 3 months, the total amount of money that Roomster has taken from my account without my knowledge is $89.85.
When I discovered the problem, I tried to contact the company, but they do not have any other way to reach them listed on their website except for an email to the Help & Support desk. I have only gotten snippy responses from them that are neither timely, nor answer my questions. Furthermore, what sort of company hides these charges then does not have a way to contact them? SKETCHY! So, I called the Better Business Bureau. As it turns out, Roomster.com had 124 current complaints against them regarding this issue. They now have 125.
Whatever you do, DO NOT give Roomster.com your billing information. Not only will you not receive any worthwhile services, but they will charge you a ridiculous amount without your knowledge and then do their best to prevent you from contacting them! If you have already made the mistake of using this website, please contact the Better Business Bureau immediately to help file a complaint!
Roomster just agreed to give me a full refund, which will satisfy my grievance. However, I'm not closing my BBB complaint until I have received the check and the funds have been fully transferred.

Please avoid using this site. I signed up for the 3 day subscription and at the end I was billed an additional $29.95 for a month of access that I did not request.
This site could use a better lay out and I was surprised that there weren't more matches in my area. Maybe other people heard about the scam.
Overall, the site leaves you with a feeling of being taken advantage of and scammed because you're being automatically billed for the site's most expensive option. Roomster is definitely taking advantage of people at one of the most stressful times in their lives because we all know that moving takes it's toll.
Roommates.com, Craig's list or placing an ad in the local paper are all better and cheaper options that got me more results. I'm moving tomorrow and this was not from a connection or info found on Roomster.
Like others, I signed up for a 3 day membership and on the fourth day the billed me $29.95 for a month. This caused 3 other transactions to overdraft at $38 extra a pop at my bank.
What's worse is after you complain they stick a couple of "roommate referrals" onto your roomster mail so you will look at them, hoping to get what you are looking for, but the potential roommate has a locked profile. This is to prove that you are still using it after you complain.
I signed up for a one time pass on Roomster that was supposed to expire in 3 days. Without notice they stored my credit card information and they have been charging me a monthly fee of $29.95. I did not use their service after three days. I tried to find their contact information but they do not provide it bacause this is a fraudulent company. Please stay away from this if you want peace of mind.
I was recently getting my apartment renovated and I had planned to do a full gut renovation of the space. Because of the extent of the work that I was having done I would not be able to live in the space while the construction was being done which was going to take at least six months so I knew I had to find an alternative for the interim. A friend of mine was telling me that they used Roomster to find a roommate after they had gotten into a fight with their previous one and had only good things to say about it. I’m usually very skeptical about these types of services but it came highly recommended from a trusted friend so I decided it was worth the risk. After creating a profile and purchasing a subscription, which was pretty reasonably priced, I was looking through the various listings and features of the site. They offer a bevy of tools that help pinpoint the best possible place for you. I settled on a nice one-bedroom place not too far from my current place and it was extremely affordable. The whole process went without a problem much to my surprise. Would definitely recommend to people looking for places for good prices.
My parents just got divorced and my mom decided to leave UK after 52 years and move to the United States. I wanted her to be close to me so I was looking for a place near me that was affordable for her to stay while she got back on her feet. I would have had her stay with me but my place is smaller than some closets that I know of. I found her an amazing deal on a place to rent right down the street from me on Roomster. It was super easy to create a listing detailing what I was looking for and before I knew it I was getting messages from people offering me rooms. I ended up choosing the one closest to me and I have to say it was a very seamless experience and I’m so happy I now have my mom with me, she doesn’t speak English very well but she’s learning!
I already found a nice roommate using Roomster. It's really a reputed website. New posts are adding every moment. You may try it for yourself. Thank you Roomster!
I like the messaging service on Roomster it makes it super easy to communicate with people's listings and enhance of the overall efficiency of the site. Low cost of subscriptions & tons of affordable listings.
Roomster is so easy to tell people what you are looking for and then to find it without sifting through tons of irrelevant posts. Best site!
Few months ago I was moving out of my old place looking for a more affordable option. After searching the net for a few days I came upon Roomster and gave it a try. They had a plethora of options and I found something that suited my budget better.
I was looking for an affordable room and Roomster help me find a great pet friendly room to rent. Highly recommend
scam!!! beware
I noticed that the complaints on this site re: roomster.com are old. But everything that is said about it is true. This site is a scam. I signed up for a 3 day trial for $5 but was charged $5 and $29s for the monthly renewal which i never ordered. It is unethical to charge someone's credit card for a subscription they never asked for. Plus, all the...

I am not satisfied with their Website service - roomster.com. My 1st time of email sent to them thr their Website never got response, their website not user-friendly, and I cannot get help in a reasonable time. Yesterday, 2/23/2011, is the last day for the 2-week subscription I tried to cancel the subscription, but they already charged me a fee, $29.95 for a whole month. Next day, 2/24/2011, I request a refund for the unauthorized charge, but they would not return my money. I left my account open and did not cancel on 2/23, because I don't know if I am still able to sign in their site and contact them for the refund. The Roomster.com is a very tricky Website and very unethical.

dishonest sales practices
I signed up for Roomster.com after finding it on a search engine advertised as a free service site. I was looking for immediate occupancy rentals and after spending 30-45 minutes creating my "free" profile I reached the page asking me to purchase an upgraded membership. Since the site advertises it's service as free, I declined to purchase anything and continued with the basic membership.
When I checked the status of my account a few days later I noticed there were 5 messages from what I assume would be potential roommates interested in my profile, but I was surprised and frustrated to discover that you cannot access your roomster messages without purchasing a membership. It also states in the terms of use that you cannot put your own email address or phone number in your public profile. By doing that, you are forced to use their email service if you want to contact anyone on the site - which costs a monthly fee.
Once I realized that this complany was absolutely NOT operating honestly, I began to look for a way to delete my account. It turns out, you cannot delete your account. You can only disable it.
I sent them an email through their Contact Us page requesting that my account be deleted and telling them why I wanted to delete it. I received an incredibly rude email back about how most of the service is free and they offered no option for deleting my information from their site. I wrote back again asking how to permanently delete my account and instead of emailing me back, there is now a message when I try to access the site saying they disabled my account for “violations of terms of use.”
I will soon be changing my email address because of Roomster's behavior. I feel like I've been robbed because of their bait-and-switch tactics and my inability to delete my information from their system.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I paid 15 and now have to pay monthly or year subscription for it to actually work (contact with people renting} and I also got fished in by fake craigslist add. what can I do now to get my 15$ back?
The bait and switch comment that states was "resolved" how so. I have same exact problem I need "resolved"
yes this company stinks.. but on the bright side.. log in.. change all the info to untrue info.. including your email address.. remove pictures and put random characters in the person info section (including your name) .. UN-check all notifications area..
this is what I did.. of course i never paid for anything so what i did just deleted my account for me.. the account exists but it's just completely random info that has nothing to do with me, my name, my email, or anything to do with me.. so it's as good as deleted for me.. maybe you can change your CC info on the site the same way? and when all said and done it'll be like you don't have an account.
Just a suggestion.. have a good day :)
The same thing happened to me. They sent me an email saying someone had viewed my profile and emailed me. When I subscribed for the 3 day trial for 5.95 so I could see the email, it wasn't from the same person they'd said it was from; it wasn't even from a person who matched my requirements at all. When I went to cancel the account it was just like he said; they wouldn't cancel it, only disable it. And it automatically renewed for $30 because apparently you have to cancel it twice, two different ways, and they make the website like a maze so you can't figure out how to do it. They also refuse to refund my money even though the new 30 days hasn't even started yet. My fault for not thoroughly understanding all their shady policies and practices before giving them my credit card info. I just wanted to get this out there so hopefully someone else can be spared from having to deal with this shady company. I suspect most of their accounts aren't real people anyway, as I got no legitimate interest in my posting. Only enough to bait me into paying them then no follow through. Stay away!
it is april 2019. roomster is a terribly dishonest and unethical sight. i am a lawyer w/ 16 yrs experience. I suspect that they are faking craigslist ads for roommates, then directing them to non existent roomster site...a link has never directed me to a specific roomster ad...just the site where i was ALREADY a paying subscriber and still couldn't get on via the app nor website. also charged me 30/mo. altho I didn't see that anywhere in the immediate signup...they're all abotu 'got ya'.
rip off
Simply put: DO NOT USE ROOMSTER.COM
They will charge your credit card, WITHOUT YOUR AUTHORIZATION after the trial period ends. You will get NO warning at all, of when that is, and they will renew your subscription for a full 30 days, for the outrageous amount of $29, 99 .
I had it happen to me, don't let it happen to you. They are a rip-off, and a scam. Together, we can make it stop, if we complain enough, noone will use their site anymore, and they will be forced to shut it down. I read horrible stories, of people having to CANCEL their credit card, because roomster.com would keep charging them without authorization! Let's put an end to it!
sneaky!! unauthorized charges
DO NOT USE ROOMSTER! I signed up for a 2 week service to look for a roommate. Which by the way did not work because this service web site is really BAD. When I signed up I did not notice that somewhere under the terms of agreement there is an AUTOMATIC RENEWAL! So I was charged 29.95 for something that I did not use and a SERVICE THAT REALLY SUCKS!
hidden charge unwanted subscription continuance
THEY DID IT TO ME TOO "Roomster.net aka Roomster Corp. - New York. This internet based company sells a roommate service. They offered me a 4 day pass for 5.95. However, they neglect to inform you that you are really signing up for a monthly service and they begin charging 29.95 immediately without notice. "

This happened to me as well, they are a fraud and take money from the people. I was signed up for 3 days and now I am getting the bills of monthly subscription. Roomster.com must be sued. Its destroying peoples peace of mind, bank information and bills. Its making me sick.
They will bankrupt innocent people for sure.

I agree! I initially signed up for the 3-day membership in because visiting the city I was planning on moving to. I was only in that city for 2 days so I was happy to see that they offered a low cost ($4-$6) 3-day "trial" membership which was all needed to check e-mails (that I couldn't access with the free account status) from potential roommates and make arrangements to meet up with a few see some places while I was visiting. That was July and it is now September and I keep getting billed!
First of all, if you don't cancel by the allotted time (end of 3rd day...maybe) they conveniently enroll you in the 30-day membership @ $29.98!
Second once you have been billed, there is NO REFUND! You are billed for and stuck with full 30-day membership, which does not include what you already paid. Ok, I can see that (kind of), I guess you have to be on top of it to not get billed.
HOWEVER there is the third and most important issue: YOU CAN'T CANCEL! The website lays out cancellation instructions but really, this is all in theory because month after month, I am still signed up. I have canceled multiple times just be sure and it appears that I get some kind of confirmation of the fact, yet I am still being billed 3 months later! I have moved, I no longer need a roommate and I no longer need the service so why am I still being billed?! I removed my profile info, made myself unsearchable and canceled but the billing (and sometimes the emails) continue. I've tried to call the number on my bank statement, no answer...actually a busy signal and I tried e-mailing, no response. As inconvenient as it is, I had to file a fraud dispute with my bank which means I have to go through the hassle of getting a new card, hoping that any credits and returns using that card number have been made before doing so and waiting for said card to arrive in 5-7 business days, which will then require me to need to update all my automatic bill pays and such. Ugh, if only I could just cancel! Unfortunately I can't so if you experience these problems (with anyone) the only thing you can do is get a new card issued. Thanks Roomster you helped a lot and made my moving experience all the more memorable.
billing
Unethical business practice experienced today by this company. It is not possible to speak with someone on the phone, I read through terms of service and billing and did not catch that they automatically set you up for renewal monthly for $30 which is non-refundable. I disabled my subscription but later learned after reading all of the above posts that I also needed to disable my account to prevent further billing. The web-CSR was curt, unhelpful, and clearly portrayed the ethics of the company in his response as greedy and deceiving. I will be reporting to the BBB, consumer reports, and vow to join any class-action lawsuit against them. Please post link to said lawsuits so that I may sign up.
The genesis of my complaint is due to billing, however, it should be clearly noted that the utility of this site appears to be worthless. I spent the 13 days of my original 2 week account spamming hundreds of other "account holders". I never received a response from anyone nor any interest. Empty promises and unethical business shine like a beacon on Roomates.com

unauthorized charges
Roomster submits unauthorized charges to customer accounts. When I received (1) mail message, I authorized a 3-day subscription to check the message at a cost of $5.95. I was shocked to see that Roomster had charged my account for an additional $29.95 3 days later for an upgrade for 30 days. If I was going to upgrade for 30 days, why would I pay for 3-day...

Just to be clear with everyone reading this. Roomster.com is an honest & reputable company. We do not make any un-authorized charges. Why would we? We have been in business for 6 years and continue to provide an excellent roommate matching service & even better customer support. On the credit card payment page & the paypal payment page state our subscription policy, and cancellation instructions. Roomster subscriptions can be canceled at any time by the member.
(the text below is from our credit card page)
"Subscription rates apply to credit/debit card and PayPal payments. All fees are charged in U.S. dollars. As long as you remain a roomster subscriber, your subscription will be renewed at the monthly rate. This will ensure uninterrupted access to your subscription. Charges will appear on your bill as 'roomster'. You can cancel your subscription at anytime. To cancel your subscription, click the "Edit profile" link on the top navigation, then select the "Settings" tab and then click the "Subscription" link. Click "Cancel my subscription".
The only data supplied to us & you about this user is that she is "Kerri from Austin, Texas U.S.A." If we had more information we could pull the records, which would show sign-up, usage & cancellation history. What's odd about this "report" is this person is that she claims that she paid via Paypal. As you may or may not know Paypal informs you of an re-occurring subscription type payments & gives you instructions how to cancel it, as well as emailing you the details.

It's a great time for me cause, I just found a Room. I spent only $400.00 per month. I am happy at all for this. Hurry up! If you need Rooms you can go without any hesitation. I recommend this all time. Thanks Roomster.com.
I required a room in emergency then i visited Roomstar.com and found a nice room. I rented this room easily. I found the site to be easy to use and straight forward. If you need Rooms you can go without any hesitation. I recommend this all time. So i think Roomstar.com is a helpful site.
This website is a SCAM! LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE!
They charged my credit card 29.95 with NO REFUND. ### of the earth! Misleading piece of $#*!s.
Very deceiving rates. Automatically renews your subscription without alerting you to the fact.
Roomster charged me $29.95 for 1 day of service! I asked them for either a refund or agreement to only pay $5.95 for the service and they refused.
ROomster.com are thieves, They are Rogues, they just charged me $29.95 for a month something i had not agreed to.
after paying for 14 days these Certified Criminals charged my bank account 30 dollars without my consent, it would give me great delight to watch your scamful business go down. THIEVES, (spits) CROOKS YOU ARE, You will reap what you sow. I am very furious and trust me this is just the beginning, just wait till i make a video, blog and circulate it round dorms, you are in for it. NoneSense!
Absolutely agree with everybody above.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS SERVICE.
It is full of scammers and dubious people.
I have been charged insanely high fees for this ### service.
I agree that Roomster.com is a SCAM! I also signed up for the 3 day trial subscription and was charged for the 3 days + 3o day membership. I emailed the help desk and the customer service rep told me that I had to cancel the 3 day subscription or I would be automatically renewed for 30 days. I cancelled my subscription right away so they would not charge me for another month, right after I cancelled the Customer Service Manager, Ashley Larson emailed me thanking me for my cancellation and quote" All future billing has ended. You will have full access to your Roomster mail box for the duration of your paid period, but it will not be renewed" and that I would be prompted to upgrade again. I tried to email directly to Ashley Larson (CS manager) requesting a refund but she did not answer my email.
I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT ROOMSTER.COM IS A SCAM! AND TO STAY AWAY! THEY WILL LIE TO YOU! iF YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED BY ROOMSTER, PLEASE REPORT IT SO WE CAN START A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT! AND PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS!
crooks!
My daugher, also signed up for a limited membership, but my credit card was charged TWO $29.95 fees the following month! The phone number is bogus, noone to contact, the bottom line is DON"T USE THIS SERVCE< THEY ARE CROOKS!

The problem is that it will not stop there; they will continue withdrawing money from your credit card unless you declare your card lost or stolen as I did. Roomster says that in order to stop the payment you need to cancel the subscription from your roomster account but there is no tab on your personal account to do so. There is a section where you can disable your account but they will still take money from your account every month. So I suggest you to cancel your credit card so they will issue a new card number for you and roomster will not have authorization to withdraw money from your account anymore. I know it is a nuisance to do so but it is the only way to stop them. I really wish someone will take legal action against them soon or later. In the mean time one way to revenge is to open a new FREE account with roomster and to use their GIVE A SHOUT to the other member warning everyone about the danger of giving roomster their credit card number. I have done so and I have warned about 10.000 around the world about this scam, but finally romster banned me from accessing their web site. So I decided to find a way around it and I downloaded a software to hide my IP address (you can do the same by following this link http://www.hide-ip-soft.com/download.htm ). Now I can access roomster.com again to continue my warning campaign. I hope that many people will follow my suit so roomster will have no choice but to actually go and get a real job to make a living as many of us do instead of stealing from honest people
unauthorized charges!!
I can't believe this! I paid $3.00 or $4.00 for a few days after a $29.00 1 month access. I went into my account and unsubscribed over a month ago. I am now being hit for some bogas ### recurring monthly charge of the $29.00. Oh and on top of that? In the whole time I have been watching this - I've had 3 maybe 4 people who were actually possible candidates. Now, out of those I have only spoken to one.
Today, I work a $9.00 an hr. job in this messed up economy. I have child support who is going to start deducting $305.00 out of my check. The banks hit me with an overdraft of $34.00 for roomster. I am already short on this last months rent due to sick days. So I need this roomster crap like I need a hole in my head!
I'm sure writing this is just spinning my wheels too. Not like anything is going to get done about it. Pretty great that we have such technology, that a company can take money from clear across the United States for a service that I need right here. Then keep hitting a zero balance account and jack me up for a bunch of debt. Now I get to complain using the very technology that they are using against me. I almost think that computers are a f'n waste of time and humanity sometimes! So anti-personal.
Poor reflection of customer service. No real concern for the person trying to get them off the email list. Tried several times. Followed all the steps. "Still" getting harassing emails.

Payed for a 3 day subscription to check out the service and come to find out that I was charged for a full week. I googled Roomster and nothing but scam reports came up. Come to find out the thieves hide the "automatic renewal" in their terms of service which is quite unethical. I plan on reporting them to the BBB and the department that handles online business for fruad. All online business should be mandated to add automatic renewals separately from terms and conditions. I will complain to my bank as well and get a charge back!
I hope that many people will follow my suit so roomster will have no choice but to actually go and get a real job to make a living as many of us do instead of stealing from honest people.
Im having the same problem and I want my money back now and there is no way to get ahold of anyone to recieve it back.. So I don't want to have to sue anyone just give me my money.. BAck ! Never using this site again..
Same ### happened to me too. I signed up for a 3 day subscription and then they use fine print to "auto-renew" you. Who buys a 3 day trial subscription and then wants to renew? NO ONE. The best part is that they don't even send you an email telling you that they are charging you. Because who would go back to a site they think is useless after 3 days to check their personal "billing" inbox? Complete ###. DO NOT USE ROOMSTER!
unknown charges
This is the e-mail I sent them...
I signed up for a three day trial of your site for $5.95. Your site charged me $29.95, and you clearly had a strategy for billing automatically though I only signed up for a three day trial. You don't have a phone number for me to call to get in touch with anyone to discuss this, and its clear that you have already set up your site to answer for your "unscrupulous" but "authorized" charge in the list of "legal-ese" in your terms and conditions. I am disgusted by this experience. Not only has the site been fruitless to me, I should have known better than to sign up for your service when it was advertised to be free until I got the ONE e-mail in my "inbox" that you wouldn't let me read. I AM GOING TO REPORT YOU TO THE U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, the BETTER BUSINESS BURREAU, THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION, the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE and any other group that I can to ensure that you are found out and your practices are published. "You" (the person or persons that "run" your self-run site have poor morals and must not have any conscience. I hope that $30 was worth it. I'm going to make it my mission to relentlessly publicize your dishonesty. You disgust me.

Did anything ever come of it?
internet scam!
I was looking for a room mate and decided to try this service.I signed up for a 3-day subscription because you can't read any e-mail response unless you subscript at least 3-days which is a trial offer.I started getting responses right away. I answered all the e-mails, sent out group e-mails, called several times. It didn't do any good because no one called me back. This is a scam of the worst kind .I think some consumer fraud organization should close this
sight down and force them to return our money. They are cheating the people.

hidden subscription
I signed up for a 3 day subscription because you can't read any email responses unless you have some kind of subscription. It didn't do any good, because the persons who had emailed me about my apartment never responded, which makes me think they were not real (set up by the company?). When I reviewed my checking account online a month after my 3 day subscription, I found a charge for 29.99 from roomster for a month of service. Always read the fine print.
I feel that this company targets students/young adults who may not be as apt to read everything before signing. I don't think this type of business practice is ethical and it should be regulated.

This company is the biggest ripoff. I sent over 75 emails to prospective renters regarding my rooms for rent. I got back maybe 2. I don't beleive these prospective renters are real. I think they are made up by this fraudulent company. I signed up for a two week trial for $14.95, and now they are trying to charge me a monthly fee of $29.95. I am disputing this with my bank which I beleive will be successful. How do we contact Better Business Bureau about this company? This is awful, the way they take advandage of people.
Concerned consumer.
