Cracker Barrel - Treatment at Greenville NC 0495 Store

Complaint in reference to:

Cracker Barrel store # 0495
710 SW Greenville Blvd.
[protected]
Greenville, NC 27824
Occurred on May 10, 2023 around 6:00 pm

I bought a ring for one of my sisters, cost around $21.00 and a glass cross for my other sister, cost around $25.00 for gifts; my sisters were in the dining room at a table waiting for me. They were from FL and this was our last day together.

My sister could not wear the ring. I looked in my bag and there was no receipt. I went directly back to the young lady I had just made the purchases from; I think her name was Kiara and told her I would like a refund for the ring that I had moments earlier bought. She remembered that I had just purchased them. She said that she had thrown away the receipt and I could not get a refund for the ring because the receipt was in the trash (had I been offered the receipt I certainly would have taken it or if she had put it in my bag, I would have had it). Neither of those occurred.

Still no problem but I really would rather not have a store credit so she called her floor supervisor, I later found out her name was McKayla, to the front. She seemed disgruntled with me because I wanted a refund instead of a store credit. She picked up a few receipts and said she couldn’t find the one that the clerk had tossed away (just a few minutes earlier) so she threw a few receipts down and just left. I asked the clerk where the supervisor had gone and she said that she had gone to check on something in the back. I thought maybe she was going to try and pull up my transaction.

At this point, if she could not find my transaction I would have just accepted the store credit because my food was now getting cold and I was feeling depressed over the whole incident.

McKayla brought back her supervisor Ruth and there lays my reason for this complaint

Ruth came out and told me in a hash voce to go to the other cash register. Before I even said a word she told me I should not have walked away without my receipt therefor putting the onus on me. We had a back and forth with me saying “I did not just walk away, I thought the receipt was in my bag”, and her saying “I should have waited to get the receipt and it would never have been thrown away in the first place”.

I felt humiliated and embarrassed.

Had she not spoken to me in such a belittling way and insinuated it was my fault, I would have just settled for a store credit.

After asking Ruth for her name and telling her that I was going to report her, she calmed down and gave me my money back and changed the tone of her voice. Too late, I was already in tears.

I went back to our table and sat and cried. My sisters were very upset about the way I was treated. Not a good last memory of our time together.

When I went to pay our bill, Kiara had McKayla come up to take my money, totally unnecessary. I had not gotten McKayla’s name at that time, so when I asked for it she smugly said “it’s on your receipt” but then pointed to her shirt and proudly spelled ever so slowly “Mckayla” as if I was stupid. I told her, in tears, it really would have been nice if someone had at least said they were sorry. She just smiled.

This episode has really upset me and I should never have had to leave your restaurant feeling so depressed, disheartened and in tears.

Maybe it doesn’t take that much to make a 76 year old cry but when I got to my car, I just sobbed.

This whole situation was completely avoidable.

Thank you,

Darlene Paris Pipkin

Desired outcome: I would like an apology.
