We have found in our bank account today that there is a pending charge of our membership renew fee on our credit card. As your staff didn't ask us and of course we didn't consent to authorize this automated renewing when we were in BJ store in yesterday, we called your store today for asking you to withdraw this charge on our credit card, but she refused to do so. Because our home policy is not to allow the business or store to use this kind of automated renew to access our credit account, we had to call our credit company to dispute this unauthorized charge on our credit card. We would like to be the BJ member but we don't like what your store did, to force our membership automatically with even letting us know first, this time.in general, we like your customer support in the store, but this time, your staff attitude isn't very good and was not helpful at all. After we told her that we didn't consent this charge or give BJ any authorization to do automated renew membership, she just would not listen and refused to withdraw this credit card charge and told us to complain to the BJ just like she is not a BJ staff (I did asked her if she was not BJ staff while I had already complained to her?). And she threatened us that she will report this incident to her manager, like we are bad customers. Without our consent, this automated membership renew charge is like forcing the membership and rob our money. So, I would like to make this complaint to you and we may report this incident to the government authorities.
I have the same concern. I was enrolled in auto renew WITHOUT MY PERMISSION, I consider this fraud because they renew you 1 month before your membership expiration dat. Costco here I come.
I also was put on auto renewal WITH OUT my permission I don’t think that BJ has the right to do that I don’t know how much the charged this is not right
Same here. I just see a pending charge on my credit card without my permission from bj for membership renewal. They did it last year, we had to go to the store to cancel it. Well BJ do it again this year. That's is the end of BJ. This is fraud and BJ means to do that to all their members.
Bj's did the same to me. I logged onto my online banking only to find a pending charge from Bj's for an unauthorized automatic renewal fee deducted from the account 22 days earlier than the membership set to expire. This is fraud because I never gave them permission to store my debit card information for any reason. Had I used cash to purchase the initial membership they would not have been able to store any banking information. There needs to be a class action suit against Bj's because this is a fraudulent practice. And imposing an inconvenience of having to make calls in an attempt to be refunded is time consuming and time is money.
Yes! They did this to me too! I never set Auto-renew, and never would! I got email saying they would resolve/refund me, but a week later, and still NOTHING! It’s fraud!
I too, was the victim of the BJ's Comenity Bank Fraud of billing a credit card I had from BJs (do not recall requesting one, seems to have come in automatically). I have been working for over 3 months trying to resolve the continuing nightmare experienced, as repeatedly refute the autorenewal and the subsequent late fee charge for not paying the erroneous auto renewal.
I have telephone records documenting nearly two hours of my time spent on the phone with BJs Customer Care Center. They ultimately said that they took of the renewal charge (three months ago). I also requested that the credit card be cancelled. I have moved, and there is no BJs near me, I never recall ever using the credit card. I tore it up when the renewal charge was dropped, and thought this nightmare was over.
NOT. Next month, there again is the dreaded charges for late fees on something I did not purchase. I never used the card!.. I have since spent over 2.5 hours on the phone with Comenity Capital Bank Customer Care Center (supposedly), trying desperately to have them cancel this credit card THAT I NEVER USED! I'm assured that the fees will be removed, call back in three business days. Call back, and as other have experienced, the fees are not removed. I get excuses, like, the system is backed up, then hang on a line for over 1 hr, with no one ever picking up. It is now three months later and the bill is up to $199.00 having never used the credit card once. Plus, theyu continue to ask me for vital information such as my full social security number, and I now wonder if this is an official scam related to identity theft.
Now Comenity Bank "personell" from the collections department share many apologies, and excuses, and that I need to wait 14 business days (up from 48 hours), before I can cancel the credit card that I never ordered. Not ironically, 14 days takes me into the next billing cycle and it is most predictable that the credit card balance (solely accrued from late fees for not paying a renewal fee, that was taken of of the credit card in May, 2022. This id definitely a scam. I was told that my complaint has now "transferred" into a dispute. I'm not sure what that means.
Other odd observations, are that my bill has changed recently. The card is no longer listed as a "My BJ's Perks Mastercard", but is listed as a "BJ's Wholesale Mastercard"
I also just opened my bank account and found an auto renew, never did I give my permission for any type of renew. I'm on hold right now with BJ's headquarters. BJ's did the same last year but I did not notice as I was dealing with the death of my husband. Hopefully headquarters is decent and refunds my money. I tried calling the Weymouth Massachusetts store but the phone rang and rang, VM full. How crazy is that. Still on hold with corporate, coming up on 10 minute hold. I think I'll contact the AG's office if I do not get results I want today. Just got another voice from them, another while to speak to a human or hang up and call, are they kidding me.
This is a follow-up to my earlier comment on BJ's charging my account without my consent. After being put on hold twice with customer service and getting no where with first rep, I asked to speak with manager. Savanah was the so called manager. I explained what was going on, absolutely no help, and gave me a scripted answer stating" Our policy is not to give back no more than one charge to my account" unbelievable! I then asked Savanah to speak to her boss, this is the comment I got back
" There is no other boss" OMG! I asked for the CEO's number or name, guess what, can't give you that either. I stated to her charging a person's account without consent is a crime. She stated that when renewing your membership at register, the system will auto renew you from there on out, it's a default. Again, OMG! Pretty much, tough luck on you. I'm sure this is what she or he as an employee is scripted to say. I hope the AG's office gets a hold of this practice and files a class action suit.
The same thing happened to me. BJ’s auto renewed my membership without my authorization. I don’t even how they gained access to my credit card anyway. That’s fraud. I am no longer have that credit card, let’s see how they going to charge it.
BJ's auto renewal without my permission on a uk credit card. I used a BJ's card in 2019. I did not sign up for Auto renew as I live in the UK. BJ's charged my credit card for renewal in 2020 and 2021. I only noticed when they did it again this year. We were not even in the USA for 2020 or 2021 (covid) despite them saying firstly they would sort it they now say they will not. I will be taking up with the credit card company as in the UK you are not allowed to do this. To make matters worse they have the nerve to say have a nice day and ask you to do a survey. Not how you should treat customers.
I found out today about the auto renewal! I am so disappointed that BJ's would automatically take money from my account. I was able to get a refund on the membership for this year, but i was unaware that I was a member last year. I feel that i was taken advantage of. I will share my story to people that I know so they are aware of how BJ's deceives their clients. Kathy
The same thing happened to me this week. I bought a membership from Groupon. Not ONCE was it mentioned when receiving my membership that it would auto renew. I don’t understand how they were able to access my bank account. Was it from the Groupon?
This should be a class action lawsuit. I am NOT happy to be surprised with money taken from my account without authorization.
During checkout, in small print at the very bottom of the screen, is a box that you’re supposedly supposed to UNCHECK. It’s automatically checked and unnoticeable so that you’re tricked into agreeing to an autorenewed membership.
They need to be sued, it’s such an obvious deception that anyone could be tricked into buying another membership to their [censored] club.
I was just charged for premium membership with out my consent
Me too just charged 55 i called to dispute it.
just saw this too!
what number did you call?
was it BJs Customer service or your bank?
This happened to me as well. My original membership was paid via PayPal. On my BJs account I 100% know that I turned off auto-renewal, but because I originally paid in PayPal, they ALSO had set up an automatic payment in there as well.
I emailed BJs customer service but didn't hear back, so I put in a dispute of the charge to PayPal. After that, then I did finally hear from customer service and they reversed the charge.
But here's the added rub in my situation - not only did they refund the auto renewal, BJs completely cancelled my active account, even though I still had 2 weeks left on my membership! How is that legal?
Thankfully Costco is opening up in my area in a few months.
BE AWARE!This also happen to me, I just realized this year that they have been charging one of my credit cards, they have it set up so conveniently for BJs that like me consumers that don't read the fine print get trap in the AUTOMATIC RENEWAL, my membership has not been used for the last 3 years and they did not reimburse the last years fee. I hope as many people as possible read this so it does not happen to others, that is a deceiving practice the automatic renewal should be a choice not a norm.
I am not even a member but I guess they got my credit card info from when I was visiting the store with a relative who is a member. Luckily my bank proactively blocked the charge.
This just happened me as well. At first I didn't think twice about it. Then a few days later I realized I NEVER used a credit card online as purchase and I paid cash for the original membership. Naturally I called and asked how they got the card # that they usesd for my renewal. ...THIS IS THE PART THAT SHOOK ME TO MY CORE. the agent from bjs customer service said they record and store every card # that I used to make all my purchases, In turn they use one of those to process EZ renewal. Im upset and debating canceling my membership
I have access to peoples accounts like my grandmother, we go shop with her debit cards for her food. Under no circumstances could or would I use her credit card for my personal renewal . That's an example. Many people are authorized to use other debit and credit cards for specific purchases (churches, school functions, elderly relatives) so that's what concerns the most about this storing forms of payment policies.
