CanLaw Inc Electronic legal kit un-openable/abuse and threats

My experience is identical to that of angry1010. I ordered an electronic "legal kit", which arrived as a password-protected .zip file. Contrary to the company's instructions, there was no read-me file in the download containing an activation code. Essentially, I had paid $63 for an un-openable .zip file. After researching the company and discovering a myriad of complaints against its owner, J. Kirby Inwood (if only I had done this before ordering!), I decided to contact CanLaw through PayPal's Resolution Centre so that the correspondence would be fully documented. After politely asking for the activation code, I received a torrent of abuse from Inwood. Apparently, I'm a "lying thief” and “deadbeat”, who is too “stupid”, “lazy” and “hopeless” to open a read-me file. He goes on to say that his company does not provide tech support because “none is needed” and he refuses to “teach people how to read.” Bear in mind that he wrote this in the PayPal Resolution Centre for all to see! As as result of his response, I escalated my dispute to a claim, requesting a full refund. While the claim was active with PayPal, Inwood sent numerous messages to my personal email threatening to go to the police to file criminal charges and claiming that he had reported me to two credit bureaus. Not surprisingly, PayPal decided in my favour and I was refunded for the price of the legal kit. Since then, I received the following message from Inwood: “You have until Friday Oct 9, 2015 to remit a total of $250.00 as payment in full for the costs of the stolen legal kit and admin costs or we will file a law suit against you in Small Claims Court without further notice to you.” Here’s a good question: Why didn't Inwood simply provide me with the activation code when I originally requested it? It would have saved a great deal of time and effort on his part responding to a PayPal claim against him and composing threatening emails to me. My guess is that the legal kit doesn’t exist or else it’s so unprofessional that Inwood doesn’t want customers to open it. He’d far rather call them then “stupid deadbeat thieves”. My brother-in-law is a lawyer and he tells me that Inwood’s threats are laughable. Nevertheless, he advises that I save all his messages in case his threats escalate and I need to contact the police. Has anyone else had a similar experience with CanLaw? I’d love to hear how it played out…

Kirby J. Inwood is well known as a shady businessman and bully who delights in taking advantage of people's naivety and making threats against them when they realize they have been 'had.' His business, CanLaw Inc. has a warning posted online from the Law Society of Canada. It reads, "Messages sent out in the past by CanLaw or Mr. Inwood have branded the recipients as 'a fool and a bigot, "'and 'a pig and a rat.' 'Who the hell do you think you are, you arrogant, conceited [censored]?' another message is quoted as saying." His abusive behaviour is due to an alcohol addiction and personality disorder documented by the legal courts after he assaulted his Soviet born wife and infant son immediately after bringing them to Canada in 1988. Avoid doing business with CanLaw at all costs unless you enjoy verbal abuse and losing your money. As far as his legal threats go, he has in fact launched vexatious and malicious lawsuits against people that he feels owes him money:

I would keep a record of your correspondence and invoices you receive in case he carries out his threat. Your brother-in-law is probably correct that he doesn't have a case but that hasn't stopped Inwood from wasting the courts time and the defendant's money.

I ordered a will kit from Canlaw and was never given an access code for the file. Emails were not responded to and I was out $62. Stay away from this site as they will take your money. Canlaw is not a law firm and no lawyers work there. Do not seek legal advice here.

A number of people ripped off by Canlaw have gone to the police in London and were told it was a "civil matter." Seems Inwood is using the legal loophole to continue this unethical business practice. Considering how many people have been ripped off, a class action suit would probably be more likely to get Inwood to clean up his act. Any lawyers out there willing to take this on?

I sent an honest review about an awful lawyer via canlaw.com's review section. In caps they replied that I seek therapy because of it. I have attached the review and email from canlaw. Extremely unprofessional.

The anon person complaining is probably either a deadbeat who owes CanLaw money or someone who phoned asking for free legal advice and got mad when told not to phone.
These complaint sites post defamatory lies without checking the facts and are liable in court. They need to be shut down.

it is easy for anyone to post a complaint if they have stolen money or services from a company and the company tries to collect
CanLaw has been on line since 1996 and we have helped well over 325 thousand people get legal help for free. Never charged a penny.
We have countless good testimonials some posted on the web site.

And along comes a couple ###s who owe CanLaw money and are attacking us for trying to collect
The fact that this web site publishes anything people post speaks to their credibilty too.
You decide who to believe.

Replying to comment of CanLaw

No one has stolen money from Canlaw but in fact the reverse is true as evidenced by some many complaints of people who ordered legal kits only to find there was no text file with a password in the downloaded .zip file. When they requested one they were subjected to abusive language and essentially "ripped" off. Considering Inwood's history of domestic assault as well as his anti-social behaviour toward the public in general, it would be better to avoid this site altogether. The image below was sent to a lawyer who declined to use his "services." You be the judge:
