How the scam works
Here is how the scam works:
1) The salesperson asks to see your Fortis bill to find your gas rate ($/GJ).
2) They say you will save money by locking in at their rate if Fortis's prices climb.
3) They don't mention that they have never offered comparable prices to Fortis (over any contract length).
Now, the purposeful use of a bait and switch (all 3 pitches I have heard did exactly the same thing):
4) They say that if "rates" go down, your "rate" goes lower than the fixed rate of your contract.
The deception is that the conversation started by referring to your flexible "rate" from Fortis. But at point 4), the term "rate" began referring to the price offered by EasyEnergy. Allow me to clarify:
To the consumer, point 4) sounds like, "If Fortis starts offering a lower rate than us, you will receive that same rate."
What is actually being said is, "Once you're locked in with us, if the rate WE offer on NEW CONTRACTS falls below the rate of your EXISTING CONTRACT, you have the option of renewing your contract with us at the lower rate."
They call this option of renewing your contract at a lower rate a "Protection Plan". It is being misrepresented as: "Your rate with will always be either the same as Fortis's rate or lower. You can't lose!".
Of course, it is a grift. Just remember that you have 10 days to cancel. Their cancellations department is FANTASTIC and easy to deal with! Credit given where credit is due! And the salesperson is nice, but still earning a living grifting, so hopefully looking for new work. God speed!
Given their poor customer service, I would strongly recommend everyone avoid this business
Perhaps their pricing structure is worth it, but given their poor customer service I would strongly recommend everyone avoid this business. They left me a message demanding payment or I would be advanced to the next stage of collections. I do not owe any money to them. My account is not in arrears. So their threat of collections was unfounded. When I called to get this sorted, the customer service rep 'Nita' was rude, made accusations of non-payment, and lied about the availability of a supervisor or manager. This was such a miserable experience I doubt they are even a legitimate business. I have no reason to think this is a legitimate company at all. DO NOT SIGN WITH EASY ENERGY! Stick with your current provider. I had to leave a star rating, but zero should be an option. They do not deserve even one star.
If it were possible, I would give a zero rating, I was fortunate enough to be able to cancel the day after the high- pressure phone call. I gave out too much information and provided electronic initials without adequately reading the document. The caller did not provide the rates. The rates are higher than the current *** rates and you are locked in for a year minimum. I find the *** rating from ComplaintsBoard.com too high.
A salesperson phoned me this morning from ***, telling me they were calling as a contractor for ***. They stated that if I could confirm my billing for the last year and that I'd consistently paid my bills on time, I qualified for a pricing discount from ***. I told him to pull my bills up and look, the person said they couldn't, they were only a contractor so didn't have access to my account. I said I couldn't access my paid bills at this particular time, and so they indicated they will call me back. In the meantime, I checked with ***, who stated they have no such program, and are not providing discounts. I called the number above back, and ... it was EASY ENERGY - so their salesperson is clearly misrepresenting themselves in their calls. NOT IMPRESSED - ***.
When a rep from this company knocked on our door, he said he worked for ***. Luckily I was smart enough to ask a few questions (because the story he was telling didn't make much sense to me), And I let him know I wouldn't be signing anything that day and then he left. I looked up the company from the pamphlet he gave me and as I thought, he didn't work for ***. Quite frankly this is bordering on impersonation. There's nothing outright illegal with what they are trying to sell, however the way they're going about it is not right. They may want to train their sales personnel better to avoid any issues and to give the face of their company a better look. Right now they're just coming across as *** looking to make a few bucks off of unsuspecting people.
A salesperson called me claiming to be a contractor for a well-known company.
A salesperson called me this morning, claiming to be a contractor for a reputable firm. They mentioned a discount for consistent bill payments over the past year. When I asked them to check my records, they admitted they couldn't access my account. I was unable to review my bills at the time, so they offered to call back later. After verifying with the supposed company, I learned there was no discount program. I redialed the salesperson's number and discovered they were from Easy Energy, falsely representing their affiliation. I am not impressed by their deceptive tactics.
The gentleman that called me was good but very persistent and not forthcoming at all. Had me believe that we have always been part of the program (actually told me this) but that now they have to call businesses directly to sign them back up for the program. *** I can see on here that they have only been in business for 3 years, so how could we have been part of this program before now? *** when I was called by the next person I asked more questions and did not confirm anything. I then sent a letter for extra insurance that we were not going to be part of their program. They confirmed we would not be enrolled. I have our lawyers on standby in case they still enroll us and will make sure everyone in BC knows their name. ***. I did some research ***. Only way it benefits us is if prices go sky high (but I'm sure there is something in their contract that will allow their fixed rate to change). In the mean time you are paying higher rates for sure. You are locked in for five years *** Only thing he said was that this was just for businesses *** and we have always been part of this program and that the rate will never go above 8.75. What the actual rate would be as of today was never stated no matter what or how I asked. This question was continuously evaded. *** No real transparency was given. What happens if you move and no longer need ***?
Very *** tactics. Guy phones today from Easy Energy making it sound like they're somehow approved by government and connected to ***. I normally don't do things like this over the phone but the guy made it out like natural gas prices go up every quarter like clockwork and they're the only option to save you money. After I'd agreed and was told somebody from *** would call me next day I did some digging. Turns out *** charges $5.90/GJ for natural gas. These *** artists are locking me in for 5 years at $8.75/GJ. As soon as I saw this I called them and cancelled. The lady who I spoke to was like "Not all our customers will save money" Only if prices go above $8.75/GJ. But I don't see it going up over 50% in the next few years.
Their door to door rep, was not upfront about with why he needed *** account info. Just said he needed the info to give to ***, only half way through the form, when asked why he needed this information did he provide the information that it was to switch gas providers. This is not an acceptable practice
My *** got a call July 21 & signed up for an agreement with easy energy. We called back to cancel at no cost within 10 day period & we sent email to easy energy requesting immediate termination of the contract. Just want to ensure agreement is actually cancelled. The agreement was for 5 years for higher rate than what she pays presently with ***.
This guy came to my house yesterday, portrayed himself a representative for Easy Energy, I asked for credentials, made everything sound VERY
This guy came to my house yesterday, portrayed himself a representative for Easy Energy, I asked for credentials, made everything sound VERY legit, signed the documents, after all he made it sound like I would be saving money on my gas bill. Said I would get a text tomorrow to get things locked in. Started to get a funny feeling this morning, phoned to cancel, could not get someone, had to ask for call back. Tried 3 times in less than 5 minutes to cancel by email, their email address kept bouncing back - huge red flag. Finally got a call back, person kept cutting me off, would not listen without interrupting. Had my email wrong, said her eyes were blurry, made her stay on line until I received my cancellation by email. Now reading the cancellation the working seems off, it says the cancellation code is for my reference - seems strange wording. DO NOT SIGN WITH THESE PEOPLE. READ THE REVIEWS! Extremely misleading.
I was contacted by this company recently and pressured into signing an e-agreement. It was indicated that I was remiss in not signing up with their company earlier for a certain rate for the provision of gas and that they were the energy provider to ***. I called *** later to confirm that Easy Energy was indeed the energy provider to them. I learned that Easy Energy is not the energy provider to *** I have subsequently been able to have the contract cancelled. I am writing this review to *** others who may have had a similar experience.
On the phone, they totally misrepresented what they were doing in a way to get you to sign up with their distribution system. I did sign up, but when I looked into it *** I cancelled the agreement the same day.
Extremely *** telemarketing. Outright refusal to admit that they are reselling energy. They talk in circles and try to make you think that they are representing *** by careful use of language. They refuse to answer direct questions, such as "are you an energy re-seller (or similarly phrased questions). They use language that makes you think you have a billing issue to *** you. As others stated, it's a shame that the stars don't go into negative territory
Be aware and don't be pressured to sign anything ... they should be shut down! These guys have called me at least 3 times falsely 'implying' that they are calling from *** (call display shows other) and start making false claims with high pressure sales tactics. They then starts asking for my *** Account details (which they should have if were calling from ***) and when asked to provide more details on who/what they are they just continue to push to see your account info. After telling them 'no thank you' and asking them 'to take me off their calling list' they showed up at my house when I was not home and tricked my *** (who's name is not even on the *** account) to give them my *** Account details and sign the contract on my behalf.
A salesman implied he was from a known energy firm, offering a service to help clients.
A salesman led me to believe he represented a well-known energy firm through a service company aiding clients who pay their bills on time. He claimed the firm would hike rates to recover a $30 billion deficit from a no gas cutoff policy during the pandemic. Many didn't pay, inflating the deficit. Rates would rise 130% over three years. However, the firm, via Easy Energy, was supposedly rewarding good customers by freezing their rates. He quoted my rate at $7.5 per gigajoule, promising a 5-year lock-in. Upon signing with Easy Energy, the firm's letter advised careful reading. I reported the salesman's claims, but the firm refuted them, stating my actual rate was $3.85 per gigajoule. Caution is advised.
Unfortunately I can't leave a no star review. The repcame to my door, intimated he was with ***. He said Easy Energy supplied the gas to ***. He said I could lock in at my current rate for 5 years. I gave my billing info and initialled the contract. Once he left, I read over the contract. It stated that they could charge up to $8 a Gj- far above *** current price. I called and canceled the next morning.
High pressure phone calls and stating that they "worked with ***" and we qualified because we are "in good standing". Agreement arrived May 13 but we've changed our minds. We arrived home from out of town late on May 14 to see that Agreement Opt-Out Deadline is May 15. Today. Sunday. They are NOT OPEN. *** returned our message quickly when I messaged them to say we DO NOT wish to change suppliers. Not happy.
If I could leave no stars I would! This is like the old gas marketer *** of earlier times. Their prices per GJ are significantly higher than *** is charging and you are locked into a contract. *** Exercise your 10 day cancellation immediately if you have signed and change your mind.
Easy Energy cold called my *** and conned him into signing up. My *** believed he was speaking with someone from *** who is his regular gas provider and they were just offering him a better price. He was completely *** to. He was told that there was "special seniors pricing" that he could lock himself into if he signed up right away. *** Why are they still in business?
What a ****!
What a ***! These guys called me at dinner time, were fast talkers suggesting they were an arm of *** and just wanted to make sure I was taking advantage of programs offered by *** as they can be hidden. After a few questions it became obvious that something was fishy. These salespeople are slick for sure. I almost signed up but decided the best thing to do was to do some research on the internet and told the guy to have someone contact me later. *** am I glad I did, this company described my fixed rate from day one for 5 years, what they did not say was that the starting fixed rate was 2 and a half times more than I pay now! Fast talker, friendly and personable these salespeople are seasoned professionals for sure. Stay far away. Checked online and the final fixed rate could be as high as triple current gas prices! They had access to all records that *** does so it seemed likely Easy Energy was a branch of ***. They wanted to close the deal asap with papers being delivered via email the next day, filled out, ready for my signature.
Scammers. They are going door to door pretending to be from a utility company
They are going door to door pretending to be from a utility company. If you fell for it at the door, thankfully you have 10 days to cancel without penalty. Also, all the 5 star reviews on their website are clearly fake. I looked into this company further and found out a few interesting things: 1. The Easy Energy rate that you're locked into is about 2.5 times higher than the current market rate, meaning you'll pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars more over the 5 year contract. You can find the rates on the utility's website. 2. There is a regulatory branch that oversees these companies. You can complain by phone and/or email to help stop them. 3. There is a consumer protection law that these gas marketers are blatantly violating, meaning that even if you signed a contract and only found out weeks or months later that you were deceived, the contract that you signed is likely not legally binding.
I received a call from a very smooth representative of Easy Energy that was highly persuasive
I received a call from a very smooth representative of Easy Energy that was highly persuasive. The caller was so friendly and casual at first that I thought it was a friend whose voice I didn't recognize. I had to ask who was calling. He said he was from Easy Energy and asked if I was aware that my gas rate has increased significantly in the past few months. He said that I could expect another rate increase over the summer but that he was working with my gas company to have the rate reduced - and all I had to do was sign a paper. He continued to say that he was working to have my rate lowered and he had lots of personal information, so it appeared he really was with the gas company. He then calmly asked for my email to forward more information and attempted to get me to sign and return 'the contract' without my reading it or having it explained that he actually represented an 'alternative' gas provider. The caller was very smooth and convincing. My advice is to stay away from this company. I checked the rates they offer.
Door to door salesman claimed to represent a reputable utility company
A door to door salesman claimed to represent a utility company, offering a 'consumer choice program' and promising government-endorsed frozen gas prices. He assured me of 'the lowest gas rates' while using deceptive tactics to get me to sign a contract. Upon reviewing it, I found it would triple my rate and lock me in for 5 years. The contract had a 10-day cancellation clause, so I tried to cancel immediately. After multiple calls with no answer, I finally reached them to cancel.
I signed up with Easy Energy in April when a salesperson visited, offering a lower rate.
I signed up with Easy Energy in April when a salesperson visited, offering a lower rate for my gas. My monthly bill was $40.00. He seemed credible, praising my low usage. He assured me my bill would stay the same, even if I moved or used more. I misunderstood, thinking my bill was fixed. The confirmation matched my current rate. But then my bill doubled. Reviewing it, I couldn't find the cause for the hike as my charges were consistent. It turns out I'd agreed to a Green Energy charge, doubling my cost. The contract didn't mention this. I accepted the cost since they reduced the contract term from five to one year upon complaint. The only exits are cancellation or relocation. How do we stop such companies from exploiting people? Easy Energy is disreputable. When I informed another salesperson of their conduct, he was rude and dismissive.
I had a similar experience with Easy Energy as described below by others
I had a similar experience with Easy Energy as described below by others. Their rep came at my door, presenting himself as being on behalf of *** and that my contract expired and that we need to renew it (to find out from *** when I called later that actually that is a complete lie because no contracts are required with ***). The rep also asked to see a *** invoice, so I showed him a copy. The rep generated the agreement which I had to sign on the spot (on his ***). Not at any time, he told me that their company is in direct competition with ***. At no point in time their rep mentioned any "numbers" or any charts showing how they align with the competition. *** has monopoly in , so rightfully so, I thought that *** is dealing with various gas companies on the customers behalf and I thought that this is them letting the customers know that there is a new company representing them, which will provide the gas in our area and a contract needs to be signed. Their contract is misleading as well. *** I believe that if *** or *** does not getting involved in a way to warn their customers
A sales agent of Easy Energy gave extremely misleading information to induce our organization to sign an agreement
A sales agent of Easy Energy gave extremely misleading information to induce our organization to sign an agreement. He claimed that Easy Energy were a representative of *** and that our organization had been selected by them to be part of their Customer Choice program. He stated that *** were selecting people who had regularly paid their bills to be part of this program to protect those customers from future increases in gas prices. He further stated that through this program we qualified to fix our gas rate for 5 years at whatever price was set by *** in April 2022. He claimed that if the price of gas decreased our rate would also automatically decrease in line with this. He stated that he was just there to look at a gas bill and collect my signature to enroll us in this program. The clear impression I was given is that Easy Energy is a branch of *** and that we had no choice but to sign up for this program. The information was given in a forceful and rushed manner clearly designed not to allow the chance to question what was being said. At no time were the terms of the agreement explained in any detail. Specifically the fact that the price would be fixed at $5.75/GJ per term (much higher than Fortis current rates). The "sales pitch" from Easy Energy has strayed into the territory of misinformation and misrepresentation and is questionable at best and fraudulent at worst.
The gentleman that called was persistent, not forthcoming, and claimed we were always in the program.
The gentleman that called me was good but very persistent and not forthcoming at all. He made me believe we have always been part of the program and said they now need to call businesses directly to re-enroll them. However, I found out they've only been operating for 3 years, so our prior involvement seems unlikely. When another representative contacted me, I asked more questions and didn't confirm anything. I also sent a letter to ensure we wouldn't join their program, and they confirmed our non-enrollment. Our lawyers are ready in case they enroll us anyway, and I'll inform everyone in BC about this company. My research indicates the only benefit for us would be in the event of soaring prices, but I suspect their contract might allow rate changes. Meanwhile, we'd be paying higher rates and be locked in for five years. He mentioned this offer was exclusively for businesses and insisted our rate wouldn't exceed 8.75, yet he never specified the current rate despite my inquiries. There was a lack of transparency, and it's unclear what happens if we move and no longer need their services.
These guys are using using deceptive sales tactics
These guys are using using deceptive sales tactics. Their door to door salesperson first explained to me that they could buy volume gas at lower prices. The way it was presented had me thinking that their "lower" price would be lower than my current providers price, the local utility which was currently priced at about 2.40 per GJ, which he did not state but I was aware of, which he knew. He did state their price was on a term contract. Later he would state that I would only save money if the market price of gas exceeded their price. I was confused so asked clarifying questions and he several times said I would always get the lower rate, all I had to do was call in and request the lower rate. In ignorance I signed up. Their instant emailing of the contract from their mobile unit, they deemed, as me reading and understanding the contract, when in reality I would not see the contract until I got to my emails. I later read it, and although it was unclear, the contract said the rate was $7.00 perGJ, for a 5 yr term, but was presenting it as a "maximum" rate that had me wondering if this implied there was in fact a lower rate. I could not find that anywhere...This was the first i learned of the $7.00 price, since the sales guy never mentioned this once!. In looking on the Web that eve I found data that compared the various retail gas companies contract term pricing, showing they all were very closely priced. I then realized what he meant when he was stating I would always get the lower price...he was *** refering to these competitors prices, all the while knowing I was thinking the lower price would be based on the current local utility provider price of $2.40 per GJ. *** I hope my story here can save others from getting taken to the cleaners on their gas rates... Gas marketing
Company is a scam. Said they are Fortis, said they would provide a fixed rate at the rate I am paying and if rates drop then I still save. So their promise is you don't pay more than you are paying. At this point you are believing you are dealing with Fortis and you trust them. Then they rush to get you to sign an agreement (which nobody reads) and you are...

The representative from Easy Energy said he was a government agent and was "here" to help small businesses in this COVID situation
The representative from Easy Energy said he was a government agent and was "here" to help small businesses in this COVID situation. He never explained about what the rates were going to be but said it would be cheaper than the bill that I showed him, but did not provide any details. He filled out a form on an *** and told me to sign - again indicating he was representing the government to help with COVID and business. We were not aware at the time of signing that the "signing" was starting a contract with a new company for the natural gas and would lead to a long term commitment with Easy Energy.

Easy energy's natural gas rate offer of $7/GJ is triple our usual cost, and they withheld this until contract signing.
To whom it may concern: Easy energy offered our company a natural gas rate of $7/GJ, which is three times our usual cost. They did not disclose this high rate until they asked the boss to sign the contract, presenting it as competitive pricing. They also pressured for an electronic signature. Upon receiving our bills, we realized we were paying at least $3500 more than usual. When we reached out to cancel, they demanded a $140000 cancellation fee, which is unreasonable.

A visitor claimed to represent a firm offering to secure natural gas prices.
A visitor claimed to represent a firm offering to secure natural gas prices. Unaware, I didn't know they charged double the going rate. They promised a 10-day cancellation period but delayed so I missed it, only learning of the hike after. To cancel now costs over $700, a tactic I find deceptive and unethical.

In July , I was solicitied by phone by an Easy Energy representative. He promised cheaper natural gas prices, and that he would lock me in for 5 years with a ceiling rate freeze. He explained that I would be paying the current rates which was 1.4 GJ, and that if the rates went up, I would never pay any higher than 6.0 GJ. He explained that my bills will still be sent by ***, so my change over would be seamless. ***. He had me sign up by email signature to a 5 year contract. After receiving my bills, I have noticed that they are charging me 6.0 GJ flat rate for my natural gas! The company sets up their customer service so that no one can inquire or complain. I cannot reach them by phone. I was hugely mislead and lied to by there representative. The contract cancel fee is $700!

An individual named Jeff, claimed he represented a local utility company in August
An individual named Jeff, claimed he represented a local utility company in August . He scheduled a meeting at our business to talk about our natural gas rate, offering assistance with future gas prices and fluctuating bills. Unaware that we were a business, he thought he was dealing with a residential account. Upon realizing our residential classification, he promised a lower rate for our bill. Later, he called for verification, quoting a rate of 6.750 per GJ, much higher than our current 2.844 per GJ. I declined his Easy Energy program upon learning it was a separate entity. Jeff claimed the new rate would cover all additional charges seen on our bill. However, our expenses increased significantly. I am seeking a refund of $781.19 for the October 5-November 4 period and cancellation of the misleadingly signed contract.

I fell for their scam with the help of Fortis B.C making them seem legit. Not even close. I now pay more then twice the cost for natural gas. I feel so sorry for people on a fixed income who got screwed by these greedy scumbags. Government should be involved in shutting these kind of people down.
