I gotta say, I had a pretty rough time with Eccotemp's L5 water heater. I spent way too much time on the phone with tech support, and honestly, they didn't seem to know much about the product. It was frustrating to say the least. And even when I did manage to get it working, it was a struggle to regulate the temperature. I mean, I guess I got a few decent showers out of it, but it wasn't worth the hassle.
To make matters worse, I had to try and replace some parts without a manual. Let me tell you, that was not a fun experience. I must have spent at least thirty hours trying to figure it out. And even then, the showers were just okay. Definitely not worth the effort.
But the real kicker? This thing is made in China now. And let me tell you, it shows. The quality just isn't there. I really think Eccotemp should have recalled this thing a long time ago. It's just not worth the headache.
So yeah, my advice? Stay away from the L5. There are better options out there.

I recently had the pleasure of installing an Eccotemp water heater from eccotemp.com. At first, I had some trouble getting it to work properly. But then, on November 14th, 2022, I decided to take matters into my own hands and try to fix it once and for all. I opened up the panel marked LPG and was surprised to find not one, but fifteen jets inside. These were sized at .040", which I suspected might be the cause of my issues. So, I took a risk and drilled them out to .043". And boy, am I glad I did!
Now, I can enjoy hot showers whenever I want. It just goes to show that sometimes, the manual or instructions aren't always right. You have to be willing to experiment and try new things. And in the end, it was worth it.
Overall, I'm very happy with my Eccotemp water heater. It's reliable, efficient, and gets the job done. Sure, there were some hiccups along the way, but that's to be expected with any new installation. As they say, there are no bad ideas, just bad directors and designers. So, I bought one of these Eccotemp units and it was broken right out of the box. It had a big ol' warning label on the front that said "danger" but they still wanted me to crack it open and mess around with a screwdriver inside! I mean, come on, that's just asking for trouble.
Anyway, I had to order another one and it took forever to come back in stock. And when I tried to return the broken one, they told me I had to pay for the shipping myself. But get this, their return address is all the way over in the Netherlands! So, of course, it cost me an arm and a leg to send it back.
And then, to make matters worse, they gave me the wrong information about the return costs. They were supposed to send me a pre-paid label, but they didn't. And since I hadn't paid for the shipping myself, they couldn't give me a refund. I was pretty ticked off, let me tell you.
After a lot of back and forth, they finally offered me a store voucher. But what am I supposed to do with that? I don't want another one of their heaters, I just want my money back! So now I'm stuck with this useless broken unit, unless I want to use it for spare parts or something.

After going back and forth with the support team, they finally agreed to send me replacement parts. However, the process dragged on for so long that the unit went out of warranty. I was disappointed that the unit had been having issues since before it went out of warranty, and yet they only offered to repair it after I complained.
To make matters worse, I had to pay for shipping and return shipping, which cost me $80. As soon as I put water into the "repaired" unit, it started leaking again. When I contacted the support team, they insisted that they had repaired it at the factory and that the pictures I sent of the leak were "inclusive". They said they would only send me a replacement part if the leak was coming from the part they replaced, but they would not honor it as a warranty issue. All they cared about was that the unit was now out of warranty.
I was frustrated that the fact that there was an email trail that dated back to before the warranty expired did not matter to them. It seemed like this company only wanted me to buy their product and expected me to be the repair person. If the time to fix the unit went beyond the warranty period, they kicked me to the curb. Eccotemp's Dangerous Water Heater Exploded - No Warranty Coverage!
I bought a remanufactured FVI-12-NG water heater from Eccotemp on E-Bay in September of 2015. I heard that they fixed this one after it failed in another home. I had the same type of water heater FVI-12-NG in a guest house for about four (4) years before a freeze-related incident made the unit unusable. I didn't install the water right away, about 60 days, because we were remodeling the guest house. After proper installation, the unit exploded on the wall after the first time it was used! I was so scared and didn't know what to do. I contacted ECCOTEMP Tech "Mike Extension 309" and he asked me to take the water heater apart and take photos of the internal area of the water heater for a warranty return. I was suspicious that they wanted me to take it apart for photos after I had reported that it had exploded. But I did what he asked me to do. After taking it apart, no one from the company would call me back. I was so frustrated and scared.
The company closed out my warranty claim without explanation and refused to have this item returned. I couldn't believe it. Eccotemp has refused to stand behind this dangerous water heater that actually exploded! They simply don't care about the consumer! How can a legitimate (?) company not care or stand behind a dangerous water heater that exploded after the very first time it was used? This type of problem could possibly blow a home up or hurt or even kill people! I wonder how Eccotemp can stay in business when they sell a product that explodes and they don't even want to investigate it? Shame on ECCOTEMP, they really are a bad company who don't care about public safety.
I would never recommend Eccotemp to anyone. They don't care about their customers and they don't care about public safety. It's scary to think that there are companies out there like this. I hope that people will read this review and think twice before buying anything from Eccotemp. It's just not worth the risk.
