We contacted LexisNexis to purhcase online research services. They quoted me a monthly fee which was agreeable. After utilizing the service a couple of times, I found that I could get better quality research free via Google. I called and asked to cancel the service telling them I was dissatisfied with the service, that it was not useful to our research. We paid all of our monthly invoices to date. They refused saying our contract was an "automatic renewal" one which could only be cancelled on the "60th day before the annual anniversary" otherwise it would continue indefinitely! We were stunned that a company like LexisNexis would put such fine print into their contracts. Moreover, I have never heard of a reputable company that would not come to some agreement with a dissatisfied customer.
I will pursue ending this contract in other ways but I feel it is important to let people know not to sign a contract with LexisNexis!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
LexisNexis is giving me the same grief, claiming that my original 1 year contract is now a 3 year non-cancelable contract based on an obscure autorenewal provision. I will never contract with LexisNexis again and recommend others do the same.
Same complaint. Not only that, cancellation is difficult when you attempt it.
This is a bad company to deal with.
We had the same problem. Lexis Nexis auto renews. The Lexis Nexis contract states that you can discontinue the contract if you retire. Lexis Nexus will not abide by this contract term and will sue you if you retire. In other words, you will be paying Lexis Nexis for a contract you will not be using and you will we be paying your retirement funds to Lexis Nexis. They will sue you in Ohio so that you can not use your license to defend yourself in your own state. Beth Farnham of Lexis Nexus will ignore the language in the contract and make up falsities to collect on the account. Use Westlaw it is a much better company.
Lexis is an awful company that hides very long notice periods in the fine print. I thought I was signing up to a one year contract but it turned out to be a one year contract with automatic renewal and a three month notice period. Never sign up with Lexis. They refused to cancel and the customer service was awful. They pretend to call you up and help but they have no qualms when it comes to locking you in they have you.
I cannot cancel or terminate my LexisNexis contract unless i either 1) die or 2) give up my law license and even then you do not know if they will pursue a claim against my estate. CAn you believe that they actually have this provision in their contract. and the legal dept. emailed me with this same conditions. this is absolutely unconstitutional and someone should do something about it. If you are having issues with LexisNexis I am commencing a class action suit against them for unfair deceptive practice and amount a constitutional violation propoenent.
Same complaints here, classic exploitation of a "contract of adhesion." It isn't as though lawyers can't read the fine print, but when conditions change and a service becomes an expensive, useless obligation, a reputable company should be open to compromising in some sort of settlement to terminate. I would be interested in a class action suit; contact jkpoole@aol.com. Has anyone tried feeding these facts to legal or news media? I can't afford to retire (and LEXIS would pursue payment anyway, if I retired just to avoid their contract), and I have significant medical expenses coming up for myself and a disabled adult son. So far, reasonable discussion has not persuaded LEXIS reps to budge, so perhaps more unreasonable tactics are in order.
This is a response to jkpoole@aol.com. Are you an attorney or work in the legal field. How long as your meeting with the rep. Was it in person or over the phone. Did they discuss the cancellation and/or termination provision of the Subscriber's Agreement. Did you even ask them the question. I did. They told me that cancellation is not a problem as long as I no longer work for the firm, which made no sense to me but this is not the issue. The reps never went into detail regarding sole practicitoners. They have threatened to sue me and ruin my credit. My injury si my livelihood. I too cannot afford to give me my practice. It makes no sense whatsoever. I am drafting the complaint and incorporating a CPLR Section 901 class action certification provision. If anyone out there is being harmed by LN with the same or similar cause of action for deceptive practice let us know what state you are from, what your situation is and has it been remedied or are you still fighting LN.
I am in this same position! I know it has been almost two years since you posted this, but what is the situation now? Were you ever able to cancel? Or did you file suit? Looking for any assistance on the matter I can get!
Some Lexis sales rep found me on Linkdeln and pressured me into a contract. First he was selling me on 55 a month trial period. Then he told me about three year contract. I said I don't know. He said if I dissolve my practice because I got another job I could cancel. Turns out I have to give them dissolution paperwork. But I never filed with the state, so that is impossible. I tried to tell him I don't like the service I got, I don't use it and I can't afford it come October. They said I'd either have to die or get the dissolution paperwork handed in. They don't care people are paying for a service they don't want, don't use and can't afford. I'm stuck for the next three years.
Briefly, I'm a veteran patent attorney, currently admitted only in D.C., and solo practitioner, occasionally working with other attorneys and firms on specific projects, including expert witness work for litigation. I dealt with LEXIS exclusively by phone, did read the contract and found it then and now basically a "contract of adhesion, " designed to allow termination only under dire economic or medical conditions, e.g. premature retirement. I discussed some of these provisions at length with their reps, but did not think that a company with the long-term reputation of LEXIS would balk at releasing a customer who simply did not find the service useful or economic. In my case, I expected at least one PTO Board appeal to be required, but none materialized - good for my clients, but left me with little use for LEXIS. I don't have time to look now, but I believe the contract had an arbitration clause, which might be a barrier to litigation unless plaintiffs could allege bad faith or fraud. Thanks for your response.
I'm having the same issue (Louisiana) now Lexis has a judgment (Ohio) against me and threatening further legal action. I would be interested in any class action that may be started. There was a similar issue with Massage Envy that could be useful as well. Ctoneyjr@gmail.com
Latest action from LEXIS is to threaten to suspend my service, as I am a bit behind on monthly payments ... but of course, not cancelling the financial liability! Has anyone contacted legal media such as National Law Journal? Might produce some well-deserved nasty publicity for LEXIS, whether or not it restrained their bullying.
This is jkpoole with an update... my contract expires July 31, and I have made a point of advising my LEXIS rep that I want to cancel. Meanwhile, I have fallen behind on payments for various reasons, and LEXIS suspended my account at some point, so I've been paying for an account that I couldn't use if I wanted to. In addition to not needing the legal research for patent appeals now, the "CASEMAKER" service available free through the CO bar assn. now includes PTO appeals board opinions, which was a principal reason for my signing up with LEXIS at the outset. As you all know, LEXIS doesn't care about changed circumstances, only squeezing each contract for the last dollar. Their latest stunt is sending me another 'FINAL NOTICE" threatening that they might "consider" collection action, then assigning the debt to a collection agency several days before the stated deadline for payment, even though I had repeatedly stated that I would pay the (unjust) debt in due course, as funds permitted. In CO they would not be able to sure in small claims court, so they would have to hire an attorney and sue in county court (lowest trial court), which wold not seem to be worthwhile for them. Nevertheless, if they did, I would defend on the basis of bad faith and inequitable business practices, plus "unjust enrichment" for pursuing payment on services which were suspended. If anyone is pursuing a class action I would be interested in participating. I plan to file complaints with the AG'S of CO, OH and NY (HQ of collection agency) and ask both CO and DC bar associations to advise their members of this money trap. I hope to interest the ABA to publicize this also, but they may be getting too many advertising $$$ from LEXIS to be interested in that. That's all for now... would welcome updates from others with effective tactics for giving LEXIS the bad publicity they deserve!
Same thing over here from Portland, OR. Was never mentioned verbally, won't let me cancel. Would love to sue them

Automatic renewal clause --- seek plaintiffs for class action
Dear Fellow Members of complaint board re LEXIS:
A number of you have said that you would love to file a class action against LEXIS.
I am ready to do this as class counsel -- having gone through the exact same thing when they refused to allow me to cancel my subscription after a cancer diagnosis. I am doing ok now and I want to pursue a class case against them. I have done class cases for a long time.
Their automatic renewal clause is subject to attack on a number of grounds.
I am anxious to get case started asap. LEXIS customer service actually is the antithesis of serving the customer -- the customer is the guilty party as they deal with them.
Looking forward to talking with you about your LEXIS experience,
Please call me at [protected] or email me prossnitzlaw@gmail.co
I’m interested too!
I have sent you an email I am interested in joining your class action. you may reach me as well [protected] Brad Oliver Azura Leasing.
Monday my rep is supposed to call me back...I have no doubt that they will tell me I can not cancel. If that is the case and there is a class action suit...I want in! Here is my situation:
False representations to lock me into a 3 year contract using the guise of a great promotional period which rises to over $300 a month for the last 2 years. I haven't been using their products at all because I stopped practicing IP law...I actually did stop practicing altogether.
The false representation came from the salesman that knew my full situation in that I only had 1 client when he sold me this package. The salesman also stated that due to my circumstances, I could discuss cancellation with them if my situation worsened. My client moved so I just gave up on practicing and now they say they won't cancel. NEVER trust them...always record conversations with them...I wish I had done that. Due to my student loans, credit card bills and now a child's medical expenses...I'm tapped out!
I explained this to my "representative" but she kept trying to twist my words and when I told her that I still pay my bar dues...she tried to make me say I was still practising...I'm not!
My two-year contract with Lexis concluded on August 31, 2017. My account was paid in full at termination. Since that time I have been dunned on a monthly basis. After repeated letters to Lexis account services I received an email dated July 19, 2017, from a person who identified themselves as "Vanjie R. Cayetano" whose email address was vanjie.cayetano@lexisnexis.com. This person reported that "I forwarded your email to Stacey Bales copying her manager for this to be actioned. I will provide you updates as soon as they respond." Since then, I have continued to receive dunning messages the latest is dated Feb. 5, 2018, from a "Jason Ace Ermitanio" who identified himself as an "Associate Telephonic Client Manager" who wrote "I am reaching out on behalf of my partner Andrew Jones who is also your Account Manager for your LexisNexis Account. Just a reminder for your 3 open invoices in your account for the month August 2017 – January 2018 and to offer my assistance making your account current." He asked to be called at [protected] so that he could process my invoices. In my opinion, one enters into a service agreement with Lexis/Nexis at their peril.
Please call me at [protected] so I can help you process the payment.
