Purchasing a Kitten
TWO years ago we contacted Diane Varni around April/May to express interest in a blue point female Siamese. She wouldn't guarantee anything before we cut her a check to hold our place for a cat. Of course, how silly of us to cut a check of $300 to her before being thorough in our research. She cashed our check and ceased all communication for several weeks. After several attempts of contacting her, she finally responded months later to say the cat she thought was pregnant turned out to not be pregnant at all...That's when we decided to look into her. Turns out, she scams everyone. I was devastated. That was a lot of money for us to put down for a cat and I was completely emotionally and financially invested. Others, who continued to press her into giving them what they paid for, ended up with FIV+ cats. We didn't want to end up in that situation and decided to not pursue a cat from her. SHE WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE REFUND YOUR DEPOSIT. We never initially told her we found out because multiple complaints against her all said the same thing. She will not refund you. It has now been two years and she has not once attempted to contact us since the day she told us her cat was not pregnant. She's running a total scam. I'm sure she forgot about us...but she'll be hearing from our lawyers very soon.
My seal point cat died from FIP that I purchased from her
My mom bought a pair of kittens (brother and sister) paying $500 for each from Diane Varni in 2008 over the phone as a gift to me. I drove several hours from Central Oregon to pick them up. My male died of FIP when he was three years old. I was so heartbroken and so was his sister. I should have known something was very wrong when I went to pick the kittens up because the smell in the house was so bad from urine it almost knocked me over backwards along with a bathroom full of sick cats she had separated. I know it's been a very long time and I don't know why I didn't speak up sooner. I wish I had contacted her to ask for another cat. Today I was sitting here with Daisy Mei and regretted not doing so as she is lonely. I hope that her business has been inspected by Animal Control and cat associations because it needs to be. If I could be compensated with another healthy seal point adolescent cat that would make me happy!
I also have one of her cats. No heath problems with her.
I am so sorry that you had a bad experience with Diane. In all fairness to her, my experience is quite the opposite. I bought a kitten from Diane 13 years ago. He just climbed off my lap after I brushed him. I actually have 2 cats from Diane. She was so reluctant to ship sweet Jack, a blue point Balinese, across country to Charleston, that she offered me a second kitten at half price so that he would not be alone. I readily agreed. Nisa is a seal point from a different litter, born a couple of days after Jack's litter. They are now 13 years old, and apart from Jack having a tiny bit of herpes virus in his eyes (which Diane told me about, and I was fine with because I just wanted a pet, not a show cat), both of my cats are the picture of health and just fine.
Diane actually did not sell a friend of mine a kitten after I told her that I was concerned that the kitten would not have a stable home. My friend was losing her house due to divorce, and I was concerned it would be too hard for a kitten to adapt.
Diane Varni is one of the most compassionate and best champions of Balinese cats and kittens I have ever known. I had many late night conversations with her after getting my 2 beloved kittens, who are now more than 13 years old. They are both still super healthy, and have brought me and my kids so many wonderful years of loving cat memories, with hopefully many more to come. I cannot say enough good things about Diane and her super sweet kitties.

lack of communication, delivery of product not met
Diani Varni was initially charming and attentive. She urged us to place a deposit on her hot ticket siamese kittens, due in May. We placed the deposit at the end of March/beginning of April and waited. Come end of May, no word, so we emailed. She responded with some excuse about the litter being smaller than usual and that she would keep us up to date. Another month passed, and still no word. Again, an email triggered an excuse. July came and went without any update except another excuse triggered by our email. We then started looking up more about her on the internet and realized what a scam we had gotten ourselves into. Her deposit is $300 dollars per cat and is nonrefundable even if she does not deliver on her end, so beware.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
She has confirmed cats with FIP! The Drain Animal control have been out there numerous times because of the stench and sick animals, and they found numerous cats with FIP.
Diane Varni continues to breed these unhealthy cats. It is a travesty for these cats who suffer and are infested with FIP and corona viruses. Please follow instructions on how to file complaints against Varni. Only if those affected by Varni take a stand and file these complaints will she be further investigated by larger institutions. She has already been investigated by PETA and the Sheriff's Department. However, we need the Attorney General and CFA to take notice.

unhealthy kittens
Diane Varni hoards unhealthy cats in an environment that can only be described as utter squalor. The overwhelming stench of cat urine can be smelled from the dirt driveway outside the house. Although some cats appear to be healthy(ier) the inside of the house is overrun with cats and kittens exhibiting nasal discharge as well as discharge from the eyes. Kitten diarrhea is visible all over the house. Diane Varni doesn't take her animals to a veterinarian for treatment. She "trades' for medications to treat her animals. She admits she "tests" the drugs on the stray and unwanted cats that have been dropped at her home. If the drugs don't kill the strays, she gives them to the indoor cats. She's not a veterinarian so she has no idea what kind of dosage is necessary OR safe. However, she states she believes she knows more about the health and treatment of cats than any veterinarian we consulted. The two kittens we purchased/rescued from her both tested positive for the Corona virus, the precursor to its mutated form: FIP. At the time we acquired them, three veterinarians were concerned these kittens would not survive to adulthood. We spent thousands trying to treat these animals and nurse them back to health. While they currently appear to be relatively healthy (one cat still has a terrible cough and both cats still have conjunctivitis) we've been instructed by our veterinarian to have any visitors to our home (who have cats of their own) change their shoes and clothes before they return to their own homes in order to avoid passing the virus to their own pets. We have been warned against bringing any other cats into our home. THESE RESTRICTIONS WILL APPLY FOR THE REST OF THESE CATS LIVES. When she was notified of their illness (within hours of accepting custody of the kittens) Diane exhibited no interest in the health of the kittens. Her only interest was in the money she believed was still due her. We also discovered that communication with Diane was impossible. Her views and responses vary from conversation to conversation so it is impossible to make any progress trying to resolve our concerns and reach a mutually agreeable resolution. Finally, although not a significant concern to us, Diane Varni's website USED to specify her animals were CFA and ACA registered. As the result of my inquiry, CFA told me Diane had never registered any cats with them and subsequently asked her to pull their name from her website. After a long Internet search, I was finally able to locate a disconnected number for ACA which led me to an active telephone number. The organization appears to be run by a lone, elderly woman who wanted to know how I got her telephone number and told me Diane had not recently registered any animals with her.
TO-DO LIST FOR THOSE HURT IN CONSEQUENCE OF DIANE VARNI'S BREEDING ETHICS (advice from an attorney)
PART I: WHAT DOCUMENTS IT HELPS TO HAVE (even if you don't have any, it is ok, proceed to part II & file complaints, read about subpoenas & how they uncover truth on breeder's part)
PART II: WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO FILE ORDERS (follow all steps; I ordered in ORDER you should FOLLOW).
----------
PART I:
- Best to have documentation/evidence. Best to check if you still have...
A) VET DIAGNOSES/EXPERT TESTIMONY (just contact the vet who diagnosed pet/put it down, they will gladly generate them)
B) VET BILLS/RECEIPTS (if not, just call vet clinic, they will regenerate them & the file)
C) if you do not immediately have A or B, search for the EMAIL CHAIN between breeder & you. Attach it & note the email provider (for subpoenas linking IP address to said breeder; also, email providers keep original databases of emails, so neither party can alter emails to their benefit).
D) if you do not have A, B, C, or D & have interacted with breeder via phone, just know you have phone logs permanently kept with cell phone companies, so don't lose hope.
E) the check/money order/etc METHOD OF PAYMENT DOCUMENTED
F) even photos of deceased pet when it was ill/put down helps to prove said pet did exist, etc. if you have papers, this can help prove as well.
^BASICALLY, it's better to have some sort of credibility/verification that you did own/purchase some sort of pet, which if you did, is extremely easy to conjure.
* BUT, even if you don't, you can STILL submit complaints to all the places below, and they can investigate it. A subpoena on anything (bills, bank accounts, email accounts, etc) will show the truth in all matters.
ENOUGH DOCUMENTED COMPLAINTS have to come in, however, to help move this process along at certain places (not at the BBB, Sheriff's Department, or PETA, however-- they investigate EVERY INDIVIDUAL CLAIM).

PART II: WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO FILE (critical instructions)
1. FILE A COMPLAINT with the BBB. must know breeder zipcode (97435) (best shot at getting money back & very important for affecting BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU standing. businesses with too negative of standings may be shutdown)

* extremely important so the business is not in 100% standing with the BBB. if you do NOT file a complaint, it IS in 100% standing with the BBB. if wronged, it is important NOT to keep quiet about these things.
* The more that report their experiences/true instances, the better for building a case leading to inspection.
2. Contact the Drain, Oregon Sheriff's Department. They will transfer you to the Animal Control Unit. (disclose cat's cause of death, offer evidence/expert testimony from vets that put cat down/examined cat during its living duration, explain if disease arises from bad breeding/genetics and/or unsanitary conditions).

Diane Varni
Four years ago, I purchased a Siamese cat from Orecatay, the cattery owned and operated by Diane Varni. This woman is a cat collector. I have been in her house three times. She has over 150 cats...she doesn't even know how many. The first time I went, things were fairly okay, but the second time, it was a complete sick mess. I felt like I rescued my cat for...

She sells kittens with FIP, pretends she is clueless and has no idea about it/that she has NEVER sold a cat with FIP before...
Many complaints about her online, but posting on Complaints Board to broaden the field. Want to warn other consumers so they do not go through the heartbreak. For those who do not know what FIP is, it is an autoimmune disease (parallel to the human version of AIDs) brought on my genetics and/or unhygienic conditions. FIP is a death sentence; cats with FIP die.
Buyers BEWARE.
She will not return a dime for her FIP kittens.

DO NOT BUY from this woman, if you want a decent chance/likelihood of a normal kitten, life expectancy, and vet bill expectancy.
In general, beware of breeders who RELY on cat breeding to pay their bills/general life needs. According to her, she is one of them who lives paycheck to paycheck and doesn't have extra cash to just "give refunds."
---
IF IN DOUBT-
Just ask yourself: How are kittens and cats with health problems/extra help needed supposed to GET help when there's no extra cash to go to the vet?
Just think about this: Why is it that no major (or many breeders at all, really) carry the ORECATAY breeding line (I can only think of 2)? Look at the most famous breeders in the Siamese/Balinese industry; do they carry her line? Breeders breed for quality and health, I can attest that her cats seriously lack the latter. Not a breeder, so don't know how to judge for quality measuring up to the breed-standard.
Just think. Good day:) Hope I saved some the heartache, as that was my intention. I don't want anyone to go through what many families already have.

• She asked me for a deposit because I wanted a female Balinese cat. I gave her $300 after two months she said that she oops! discovered that the female was a male. She did not return the money and she gave me many different excuses for her bad actions."Your cat died", "I need to pay the electric bill", "My teeth hurts" . I have all her emails and I have proof of everything. She appears recommended in the CFA web page under the name of ORECATAY.

The first cat had the corona virus .she had seizures we had to put her down.

• Diane Varni sold me a cat after two years of waiting for one. The cat was crawling with fleas and I even confronted the vet that cleared the cat for shipping. I used the cat for one litter and then sold the cat to a breeder friend in Wisconsin. The cat died of FIP. Two of the kittens that I sold from my breeding, died of FIP. The breeder in Wisconsin has a pregnant cat and she is scared to death. I have contacted Diane on many occasions and she has not responded. I have to replace the kittens that I sold and Diane shares no responsibility for selling a cat crawling with fleas and FIP.

• Diane Varani sold me a kitten back in October 2010. I called before going to pick it up and everything was okay and ready. When I got there she said it had a minor cold and gave me some doxycyclene. From there started my hell. The kitten was sick with FIP which infested my 3 year old siamese. Working with my vet we tried to save the kitten but it ended up having to be put to sleep. Diane admitted selling me a sick kitten and promised to repay the purchase price. 15 months later I have not seen a penny. She's always short of money etc., all kinds of excuses.

• I think she has 25 cats or more. How can she be short of money? She has so many cats she does not even the sire and dam of the litter for sure.

Regardless of disagreements about less important specifics, the most important thing and original intent is to help other potential buyers avoid heartache and loss of money. Losing a pet, purebred or mixed breed, is painful, especially when it is so young, as FIP usually manifests in younger cats. I don't wish that on anyone/any family, and hope they could avoid that.
AIDS is an immunodeficiency disease. AIDS and FIP are comparable examples.
You basically have no immune system with AIDS, which humans get, or FIP, which cats get.
FIP is brought on by genetics and unhygienic conditions. Please do research on FIP if in doubt. You may not understand cats; their health works completely differently than dogs. This is the reason breeders keep closed catteries and do not allow anyone or anyone who has cats, or other cats, in and out of their catteries. FIP is also airborne and can transfer from cat to cat.
It is a very perplexing disease because of BOTH its genetic components and ability to transfer through contact. It can be both genetic and brought on by unhygienic conditions and by stress. Perhaps you may go beyond your level of expertise, as you disagreed with the very basics of FIP.
And purebred animals are as special as mixed breed animals are. They are both special.

Will be filling a complaint and working towards getting her Cattery shut down so this doesn't happen again. I bought my mother a kitten from Diane last christmas (2014), and yesterday that kitten had to be put to sleep due to a confirmed case of FIP from two vets, one a specialist who has been in the field for decades. Any more information, besides what is listed above, would be greatly appreciated.
AIDS is not an autoimmune disease and I know of no disease that has, as its pathogenesis, genetics OR unhygenic conditions...no such thing; it's one or the other. You got beyond your level of expertise there. Wouldn't hurt to say what FIP stands for.
And by the way, dog "breeding" has also become a way of earning some extra dough these days. Be very careful if you are looking for a dog or cat from a breeder. Both categories have become "money mills." Eff those people - they charge exhoritant prices for nothing special animals.
