Restaurant.com buyer bewart

You guys don't know how Restaurant.com works. I'll explain it from the standpoint of someone who owns a restaurant and works directly with them. Restaurant.com sells the Gift Certificates and keeps all of the money from said sale. Restaurant.com 'sells' their program to restaurants by giving them 'free advertising'. "We'll put you on our site, add your restaurant to our mailing list, and to our e-list and you'll see hundreds of new customers!"

The only money that the restaurant sees from these transactions is the money that is spent over and above the actual gift certificate. The reason many restaurants add an 18% gratuity is because you, the consumers, don't understand that when you're $50 bill gets reduced to $25 you should still tip on the $50.

This is also the reason that there are so many terms and they are different for different restaurants. The once a month rule is in place for the following reason: Restaurants don't make any money off of these except what you spend above the gift certificate. For example, you bought a $25 GC online for my restaurant for $2. Restaurant.com gets that $2. You come into my restaurant and spend your minimum $35. I add the 18% and take off the $25 from your bill. I gave you $35 worth of food and got $10 for it. You also tipped the server about $6.30. Factoring in the cost of the food, the cost of the server, the cost of the cook, and the cost of keeping the lights on in your booth, I made about -$1.27 on the entire transaction. Obviously not a good deal for me. We more than likely impressed you with our food, so you want to come back. If you can come back every day with a Restaurant.com gift certificate, I'll go out of business. If you want to come back every day but can only use a Restaurant.com GC once a month, you either come back in between and pay full price, or you wait.

To say that most problems come from the restaurants and not restaurant.com is completely false. In my experience, 95% of the problems come from the guests using the gift certificate. We as operators are put in a position every time one of you either didn't read the terms or didn't care and just wanted to take advantage of us. We either have to go with the 'customer is always right' and lose our balls, or we have to risk pissing you off and never seeing you again. What I've found in my experience is that you probably aren't going to come back without a gift certificate anyway, so we may as well piss you off and hold you accountable for reading a little bit. Here's what I see on a weekly basis:

Customer doesn't spend the minimum
Customer wants to use two restaurant.com coupons
Customer wants to use the 'gift certificate' with another coupon
Customer wants to use the gift certificate on a daily special that is already discounted
Two couples go to dinner, each has one
What is this 'service charge'?
Customer wants cash back for the unused portion
Customer spends $28, leaves the restaurant.com $25GC and $6 in cash in the book and leaves

We will not be 're-joining' Restaurant.com because for restaurants it is a profit eater.

No Shirt, No Shoes...thanks for your insight. You're giving owners some advice here, and since I'm one of the two owners on this post, I'll assume it was directed at me. I didn't get roped in by a hard sell. I was looking to drive traffic, and I didn't have the $$ flow necessary to do it. Trading COGS for guest traffic instead of $$ for guest traffic was what I got, and it was exactly what I thought I would get. The reason I made this post was because of all of the consumers complaining about the restaurants...why are the terms different for each restaurant? Why is the gratuity included? Why can't I get specials? Etc.

Here's my experience. I followed the rules and cancelled the program in writing 30 days prior to our anniversary. We continued to be listed on the site. Every gift certificate purchased from 6/09 until 2/10 had an expiration date 1 year from the purchase date (ex. Expires 12/23/10 except where prohibited by law). After 2/10, every gift certificate purchases stated on the bottom "This Gift Certificate Never Expires"; R.com told me that "we didn't sell any extra gift certificates so, no big deal, and the expiration date was taken off because some states, like California don't allow gift certificates to expire." I asked if the 'except where prohibited by law' covered that, and he told me that it did, but they "changed it and let all of their customers know that some of the gift certificates will expire in 1 year." So, I'm left to piss somebody off that comes in with a gift certificate for my restaurant that says 'this never expires' because R.com supposedly let every one of their purchasers know that "some restaurants have a 1 year expiration"?

With that said, I'll stand by my original post. The problem with Restaurant.com isn't R.com itself, it is the people that use the gift certificates. I'll argue that you can't compare the 'advertising' you get on R.com with traditional advertising. R.com advertising will drive more traffic in the short term, but its impossible to know what the long term benefits are. My experience is that a very small percentage of R.com guests come back as full price paying 'regulars&'. That was confirmed to me by a R.com agent who told me that according to their studies less than 10% of their customers return as full paying guests.

So, as an owner, I'll tell you that R.com will generate unprofitable sales in the short term, and the long term gain in regular, paying guests probably won't be worth the extra COGS as compared to traditional advertising. If you do work with R.com, add every single one of those guests to your database, as it will increase the liklihood that they become your guests instead of R.com customers.

I'm the original poster. I notified Restaurant.com in writing that we would not be participating in the program when our 'contract' ran out (6/30/10). On 7/2/10 we were still listed on their site. Our 'contract' states that we are required to honor the certificates up to 1 year after the purchase price. I notified Restaurant.com that since they breached their contract with us by having us listed after 6/30, I would not be honoring these certificates at all any longer. We have it posted on our website, on our facebook page, and on our specials board at the entrance. I have had one guest complain.

Now, for restaurant owners who are involved with this company...I've found that a very small percentage of Restaurant.com customers have become regular full price paying customers. With that said, as an owner, you do have access to the email addresses of every person that bought one of your certificates. Use them. I have added over 300 emails to my customer database in hopes of converting these guests into regulars.

Wow, I'm sorry all you restaurant owners are loosing money on this. I recently used points I had on my visa extras card to get gift certificates to use at Restaurant.com. I don't mind paying the gratuity on the full price of the meal. I personally try to correct EVERYONE when they try to cheat on the tips, those people suck. But I am always generous with tips. Anyway, I went on the restaurant website to redeem the certificates I got with my points and purchase these discount certificates for restaurants I thought my son and his girlfriend might enjoy trying in their area. You see they are moving south and don't know the area well, so I review the restaurants listed, picked a couple that got good reviews from Yelp and obtained them. Since they are moving, they will be on a tight budget for at least the first month till they get settled. They will be making plenty of money with the new jobs they got but I expect that they WILL be repeat customers after they have tried these establishments. I thought that was a great way to bring in business for those restaurants. If they are worth trying then my son and his girlfriend will be back but they wouldn't use Restaurant.com to buy certificates before they go. Anyway, the website DID serve a purpose to bring in business for the restaurants I picked anyway. I picked ones that fit their taste buds. P.S. I will be sure to remind them to tip on the full price. LOL

I am a restaurant owner. Unfortunately I have gotten involve with this scamming company, if I had known from the beginning how they worked I would not have even talked to them. They did not disclose any information about selling coupons or gift certificates to costumers, nor did they mention the fact that they keep all the money from those sales. According to the sales representative they wanted to put our name in their website for people to comment on it. This has caused us major economic problems since we are not getting any money from it. We tried to cancel, but they have REFUSED TO DO IT. THEY WON'T CANCEL AND THEY WANT US TO HONOR THE GIFT CERTIFICATES WHICH THEY KEEP SELLING FOR AMOUNTS OF 10 - 100 DOLLARS. WE Also tried to cancel the sale of certificates that were higher than 25 dollars and to post in the website that the restaurant was not accepting them because of problems with restaurant.com and the website canceled our ACCESS to the account. THEY WANT THE RESTAURANT'S COSTUMERS MONEY NO MATTER HOW THEY DO IT.

You discuss the mandated 18% "gratuity" which apparently you put in your pockets and expect that the customer tips on top of that? Wow... I'd hate to work for you. You talk about how all the customers don't read the terms and conditions and then gripe about how you're getting hosed by restuarant.com. Sounds like you didn't read (comprehend) terms of your agreement with restaurant.com and details of the program. Point fingers at others that (might) have the same failings as yourself and pocket the gratuity meant for the waitstaff: world. class. [censored].

Do any of you restaurant owners feel that you've been harmed by restaurant.com? Have they failed to cancel your agreement after you followed their cancellation procedures? Have they attempted to bill you for 'outstanding certificates' after you've been out of their program for some time?

We are assessing interest in participation of a class action suit against restaurant.com at this time for issues such as these and more.

I too am a restaurant owner in the Los Angeles, CA area. I must say, I feel a little better reading the posts from restaurant owners about their frustrations with restaurant.com. I concur with most of the comments made, although we have been really fortunate in that most of the people read the fine print and understand the restrictions. Of course, we get the few people that create an arguement, but we just show them on the gift certificate where it has the restrictions. I was mostly pissed at restaurant.com because the sales person would tell us one thing, then when we tried to make some changes, the "partner relations" department would say something completely different. For example, the sales person told us that we could restrict the # of days to honor restaurant.com to any time after the first 90 days of being involved in the program. After the 90 days expired, I called the sales person to tell him that we only wanted the GC to be valid Monday - Thursday as our busiest days are Fri/Sat/Sunday. I was so surprised to hear that we "had" to offer the coupons at least 5 days a week. Nowhere in the agreement does it say we would have to honor the GC on any # of days. We also wanted to change the minimum purchase from $35 to $40. I had to call about 6 different people at corporate, and pretty much had to threaten legal action in order to get this changed. It took about 5 weeks for them to make that change after they finally agreed to it.

After all of this disappointment, I decided to send in my notice to cancel my restaurant.com listing. Buth then I had an epiphany. Every restaurant.com customer that came in, I offered to sell them a $25 gift certificate for $10 (same deal as restaurant.com). There would be no restriction as to whether it was dine in or take out, I sweetened the deal by reducing teh minimum purchase from $40 to $35. As a restaurant owner, we get the $10 that normally would go to restaurant.com and on top of that the $10 delta from the gift certificate vs. minimum purchase. Customer doesn't lose anything because they are getting the exact same deal that they would normally get at restaurant.com. So far, this has worked really well. I sent out an e-mail to all of the people who purchased a gift certificate from restaurant.com and we've received pretty good feedback. Basically restaurant.com is doing all of the advertising to drive in some new customers, and then we are converting them to our gift certificates.

I completely understand the restaurant's position, but having recently tried to redeem a $25 Restaurant.com "coupon" and had it refused by the merchant in question (Shelburne Steakhouse, in VT) for the reason that "we aren't accepting them anymore because we don't make any money from them" (versus any issue where we didn't read the fine print carefully) we were just blown away and much angrier at the restaurant than at Restaurant.com, scam that they might be. Note that the restaurant has no mention of this policy on their Website, just on a printout at the hostess stand.

For context, my wife and I eat out quite frequently and tend to be very regular customers at our favorite establishments. Our typical bill (before gratuity) is $75 - $120, and we tip a straight 20% on top unless service is awful. We also rarely use gift certificates, unless they are given to us. The restaurant in question is a new one in our area we had not yet tried out, it's right across the street from my wife's offices, and my own little sister recently started working for them. If the food was good, we would be back all the time! When we were told that the $25 coupon we had (which we had been given as a "thank you" by a friend) would not be honored because the restaurant doesn't make money from them, we could not believe it. We shouldn't be responsible for the restaurant's poor decision to do business with a bad merchant. Based on that experience, they not only lost two individual customers, but also two large business accounts (my wife's firm and my own), and we are telling everyone we know about the experience and warning them away, both from Restaurant.com, but also from the restaurant because of their very poor handling of the situation.

It's very interesting how the restaurant owners continually complain vehemently about RDC but these same restaurants NEVER identify themselves. As I've said repeatedly, as a consumer, my husband and I have discovered some wonderful restaurants by using RDC and we DO return to these restaurants WITHOUT A COUPON! We've also recommended and taken some of our friends to these newly discovered restaurants and have NOT always used coupons. So, to begin with, your observations are NOT accurate (at least as far as our family goes) and, also... people filing complaints should check spelling so at least these unhappy restaurant owners appear to be somewhat familiar with proper use of the English language.

RDC has cost my restuarant thousands of dollars in COGS. My restaurant is no longer listed on rdc ever since I had an attorney take on the battle to be removed from their websight. This was the worst mistake any restuarant owner could make. The clientel are not faithful customers. I have never seen a rdc customer come back to my restuarant without a coupon. Actually I have never witnessed a rdc customer spend more than ten bucks over the minimum purchace. I am at my restaurant all six days a week so I can make my "witnesses" honest. I've dealt with so many hassles from the rdc customers since they choose not to read the terms and follow the rules. RDC costs a fortune and I wouldn't be surprised if they lied to me and sold more than one coupon a day for my restuarant. One friday night when we were participating with rdc we had 50+ tables booked in our 28 table capacity dining room. It was a nightmare! 34 tables were cheap rdc customers spending the bare minimum. Full paying classy customers were forced to wait long for their table to be ready which was not fair. I gave out over $1, 100 worth of goods to the rdc customers and none of them have come back without a coupon. Overal rdc cheapens the image of an upscale restaurant and eats profit. It's better to have low covers and control your operational costs than be booked with cheap customers and raise your operational costs.

I am a consumer and have been using gift certificates from restaurant.com for many months. I follow the rules and have never had a problem. I was curious about the perspective of the restaurant owner, so I came to this site. I just have a few thoughts:

1) I am not surprised that some restaurant owners have entered into a contractual arrangement with restaurant.com without understanding the terms of the contract. There is no excuse for entering into any contract without understanding the terms. There are many attorneys and CPA's out there who offer reasonable rates that can review the contract before you sign. Falling prey to hard sell tactics is not an excuse either.

2) For financial reporting purposes, each restaurant.com gift certificate transaction should be recorded at the full value of the meal provided. The offset should be recorded as an "Advertising Expense". That way a restaurant owner can track the expense and compare it to the annual advertising budget. If the expense is what you would have budgeted anyway, then you will balance correctly. If not, then you may have to cut back on other forms of advertising until your contract expires. If your total revenue is in excess of what you had budgeted as a result of using restaurant.com, you may have a favorable experience. The secret is to track the results of any form of advertising. If you can't track the results, what is the point?

3) I understand that many states, if not most, impose a meals tax. I am not suggesting that the restaurant owner pay the tax based on the grossed up transaction if it is not required by the taxing authority.

4) I notice that when I go to the restaurant.com site, that some restaurants are "out-of-stock" with regards to certificates. This is obviously a control mechanism to protect the restaurant owner from unlimited risk.

5) I noticed that some very reputable web sites have mentioned restaurant.com and recommended it to consumers, particularly in this economic environment. I know there are many scams out there, particularly for credit counseling and other services, taking advantage of desperate individuals. This does not appear to be one of them.

Restaurant.com unauthorized sale of discount coupons

This company sends representatives that hard sell a restaurant into "trying out" their website coupon sales. I was told by the sales rep that if it didn't work out for us, I could cancel at anytime. When he stopped by to try to re-up our participation, I told him that I wanted my restaurant to be taken off the site immediately and to sell no more coupons. He told me "NO Problem, he would immediately have it posted as "Out of Stock" and we would be removed ASAP". That was on Jan 8th and today--Feb 24, the restaurant is sill on the website and they are still selling coupons, that we will not honor. Restauranteurs beware!

In this economy, restaurants need to be aware that people are looking for value.
If you choose to alienate your customers, trust me you will loose!
Rest.com is a great company that offers value!
Why don't you give the people what they want instead of what you want!
Isn't that what a good business owner should do?

Our experience with restaurant.com is similarly bad. It may not be an out-and-out scam, but outright misrepresentation on the part of restaurant.com makes it damn close. This company basically blackmails a restaurant into honoring deceptively marketed and financially crippling discount coupons. The alternative is alienating your customers. At the very least we intend to post a notice on our door that we will no longer be accepting restaurant.com coupons as of the date we can "officially" cancel with them (around 5 months from now). Hopefully this will serve as a deterrent to customers with these coupons. If anyone has a personal story on how they ended this blackmail before their "contract" ended, please share.

We own a small Mom & Pop and we had a heinous experience similar to the ones above. After 10 years - between the economy and weather and Rest.com, we're close to the breaking point. Rest.com told us it was ninety days from when we asked them to stop, which was Feb 15. They continued to sell them at $2 on a $25 and we kept up our end of the bargain and stopped accepting them on May 15. Today is Dec 15 - and we got 2 within 5 minutes of each other. RESTAURANTEURS BEWARE - even if you have it in writing, NO ONE represents you when it comes to these people - stay away! Plenty of other ways to do it besides this scam. (No - we explain that they're scammers, and if they sign up for our e-mail, they'll get even better coupons - but not $2 for $25...)

My restaurant just signed up on June 9, 2010. Sounded good at the time as a way to get new customers in the door. After a few weeks, we were being flooded with these rest.com gift certificates, with a total of $2890.00 of "give aways"in the first month. Its like this...if customer spends $36.00 for their total bill, my restaurant receives $12.00! We are losing money! The only one benefiting from this is the customer and Rest.com. When I called my sales rep to complain, of course she would not call me back. Then finally got a call from corporate office who said you cant make changes within 45 days & suggested limiting the amount being sold to an average of 30 per month, sounded reasonable.Why was I not told this upfront? I asked that they quit selling them since they must of sold 200 the first month to try and help alleviate the financial burden this is causing my company. Less than 9 weeks into the program my restaurant has given away over $5000.00 of free food and alcohol! The biggest fraud is being told by the perky sales rep that a customer can only use their coupon once a month.Really? then why can a customer buy 4 at a time? How can a restaurant police the customers to abide by this when you serve 400 people a day...impossible, , , and yes customers do use them whenever they want and we cannot control it. We are done with this company! I will contact the BBB about the fraud on our end and maybe for all you other restauranteurs who feel scammed by them, maybe a class action suit will get their attention !

Our experience was similar -- sales rep said we could cancel anytime but the fine print is 30 days written cancellation.

Because it doesn't cost them a thing after they post the information, the deep discounting is no skin off their nose, and yes, it DOES cheapen the customers' perception of the business.

There are lots of other opportunities for flash sale type things, like Groupon, where the restaurant gets a % (usually half) of what the customer pays for the certificate.

I seriously doubt we'll do Rest. com again, ever.

Had similar experience. Worse yet, they discount the certificates so deeply sometimes -- like $2 for $25 -- it cheapens the customers' perception of the business.

If they were more transparent and shared the $ that the customers spent, it might make sense.

Restaurant.com Rejected certificates

Restaurant.com certificates used to be a great way to save money. Sure, you must read the fine print. A minimum purchase is required and many have specific days that are blacked out. It has saved me some money, however I have had several certificates refused at the restaurant. They've just decided to no longer except for various reasons, apparently there is a fraud problem with these certificates, so it's hard to fault the restaurant. Restaurant.com says you can exchange an unused certificate for another, but it's a huge hassle. I don't know the solution, I'm just saying BE CAUTIOUS. Read the fine print and don't let certificates get close to expiration (1 year from purchase) so you'll have time to exchange if refused. Because the customer service at R.com is like most companies and pretty much non-existent.

Restaurant.com Certificates

I am really surprised to see so many complaints about Restaurant.com. I have purchased dozens of certificates from them and never had a problem. We have gone to many new places we would have never tried without the coupon. I have never had a restaurant reject the coupon. I was able to see all of the terms and conditions before I made my purchase. I think this is a great service and I am very happy with them. The only time I've ever regretted my purchase was with one restaurant that is in a shady neighborhood. But that is not restaurant.coms fault.

I have a complaint- I bought a certificate that said 25.00. The restaurant did not take the full 25.00 off they took the less entree off (22.00) then they put on 18% tip on the full bill INCLUDING tax which was 72.00. In any other situation you tip PRIOR to tax especially since tax is at 8.75% tax it ridiculous! When I called restaurants.com to complain the certificate states 25 they simply said not our problem call the rstaurant.

Restaurant.com Consumer Fraud

They offer discount certificates for restaurants. I bought three $25 certificates for a local restaurant which I like (Regatta Bar & Grill in Syracuse, NY). It provided a $25 discount; I only needed to spend $35 to qualify for the discount each time. We tried to used one of the certificates for Brunch on Mother's Day Sunday and the restaurant refused to honor it. Even though my certificate allowed me to use it for any meal and holidays were not excluded, the restaurant changed the terms of use after my purchase (I now could only use it for dinner on a non-holiday and I had to spend $50 to qualify for the discount).

I am upset because I did not get the $25 discount for brunch. When I complained to restaurant.com, they said the restaurants can change the terms any time they like (although this is discouraged). Restaurant.com said I should call the restaurant before I go to make sure they are still honoring my coupon under its original terms.

This is nothing but consumer fraud. Restauant.com website does not disclose that the terms of the certificates can be changed at any time. The site says that the certificates are good for one year and come with an unconditional guarantee.

Restaurant.com gave me the opportunity to obtain $25 certificates for a new restaurant, but I think that I am pretty much done with this company. What a turn-off to find out that the restaurant can change the terms of previously issued certificates at its whim.

To make matters worse, I had another certificate for a different restaurant (Rocco's Pizza in Rye, New York). We tried to use the certificate in May 2009 and the restaurant said it no longer particpates in the program at all! We still had 8 months left on the one year certificate.

These certificates are good when they work. However, beware! The restaurants can refuse to honor the certificates at their whim. Restaurant.com will not give you the money you lost (i.e., the $25 discount for your meal).

I would NEVER give one of these certificates as a gift again. Can you imagine how upset the gift recipent would be if the restaurant refuses to honor the certificate?

I had purchased a certificate for a restaurant which stopped participating with restaurant.com, and I was allowed at no charge to change the certificate to my choice of other participating restaurants. Just ask the restaurant beforehand if they're still honoring the certificate, and you won't get stuck paying the extra money.

In December 2009 I purchased 4 gift certificates from Restaurants.com. Two for $25 each off on a $35 meal at Quick Kabob in Westminster, Ca. When we attempted to use one of them, the owner or manager said the minimum price had been raised to $50. I advised them that they were breaking a contract. They did not seem concerned.
I will contact Restaurants.com and ask for a refund for all 4 certificates, and if that does not work, I will ask VISA to reverse the charges.

Restaurant.com Terrible place

I have emailed them and reported them to the BBB. They are a scam. I purchased a $100 certificate and then had to spend $200, plus buy the certificate, total would have been $140 for $200 restaurant bill. That is worse than a 50% off Entertainment coupon. But the restaurant wouldn't honor the coupon. Also on the website it read minimum purchase was $35 not $200.

When I went to get my money back they emailed and replied NO REFUND - their words exactly: To complete an order, there is a box that needs to be checked off that states 'I have read and agree to the restaurant terms and conditions merchant terms and conditions and applicable restaurant restrictions So read the fine print! BUYER BEWARE!

I have never purchased a coupon but have read through a lot of these complaints and it looks like the restaurants are the ones really getting ripped off here. To put a restaurant on a list without the owners consent or leave them there when they have asked to be taken off is dishonest. Looks like the problem has been exasperated by cheap, stupid people buying these coupons (Geez you want to save 90 pervent and then not tip the servers!?!) -- between those two things no wonder there are a lot of problems -- sounds like too big a pain in the ### for my money and time -- I refuse to make phone calls on my own time because the people I bought the coupons from are dishonest -- count me out

This person obviously did not readtthe terms and conditions. I have used restaurant.com several times, with no problems. It seems that some people think that restaurants should simply give free meals, with no conditions? I think that when you can get a $25 coupon for only $2 (with the 80% off code), then it is more than fair for the restaurant to have a min order of $50 and exclude alcohol. After all, I just got a $23 discount on a $50 meal. In fact, I almost feel bad - like I am getting too good of a deal.

And - for those of you who don't tip their servers on the entire amount - shame on you. You should just stay home and cook/serve yourselves.

I am looking into using this service for the first time and have just discovered that there are radio buttons in the screen where it lists participating restaurants and shows the coupon values each restaurant will accept and under what conditions. The conditions change according to the face value of the coupon, you have to click on the button next to the specific coupon you are interested in to see minimum purchase amount.

I have been using Restaurant.com for discount coupons for almost 3 years and NEVER had a problem! I even had a coupon for a restaurant that went out of business and got a new $25 certificate. I've used them in NY and Florida and as long as you - read and follow the instructions - they work great!

Did you show it prior to ordering?

Whats the name of the restaurant? Expose them

I think they sign on for the advertising aspect...but maybe arent ready to honor the discount?

The problem is that you didn't read the requirements to use the coupon - not that restaurants.com shafted you in any way.

If the restaurant didn't honor it for some reason *outside of the terms of the coupon* then you should contact corporate headquarters of the restaurant.

I bought a 'coupon' for $10 using Paypal (for protection, thank God) good for a $25. After checking my email, I found the link to PRINT my coupon and only then saw that I had to SPEND $35 in the restaurant in order to use it.

The restaurant is one we frequent often and the staff knows us fortunately. It's not an expensive restaurant but we knew the food was good and thought... oh well... it's ok... even though we now have to actually shell out NOT $10, but $20 to use the $25 coupon.. we ordered 2 softdrinks, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 3 desserts (one to take home with the other leftovers we thought) just in order to get the bill high enough to USE the coupon.

Then we went to pay and the staff had never heard of nor seen this type coupon before. I decided to call the phone number on the coupon and then noticed the line that said I would be INVALIDATING the coupon if I did... so quickly I hung up and asked the staff to call instead. The two staff members poured over the coupon thoroughly and called one of the owners and he also had never heard of this coupon or website. I was put on the phone with the owner and he said it could not be used until he talked to his partner. I gave him the phone number listed on the coupon as well as the validation code on the coupon and insisted he call right away to verify, as I would wait. We had already spent more than we expected to pay, then PLUS the $10 to restaurant.com. what a ripoff... then I read the fine print that said we couldn't get any money back anyway... I was starting to get upset and my fiance was getting ticked off the longer this took.

But we waited to hear back ... this took about half an hour in total. The owner did call back and he told his staff to go ahead and accept the coupon as he wanted the copy to look over and let his staff know he "had a problem with restaurant.com as he had never SIGNED anything with them". Thankfully they knew were were repeat customers and wanted us to not be upset with THEM.

Suffice it to say that it caused stress on us, and with the hefty tip for their troubles, we still had out of pocket expense of about $30. I don't fault the staff... they were understanding. The owner ended up only making about $10 on the whole deal for a $35 meal. It turns out that the TEN dollars I paid goes to RESTAURANT.COM... the restaurant only makes the $10 on the back end (since you are forced to spend 10 more in order to use the $25 coupon) and the loss of $25 dollars ends up being an advertising expense for the restaurant. Maybe that's not a big deal to large chains.. but for small restaurants I think it sucks.

I highly recommend NOT buying anything from this company UNLESS you went through Paypal... (for protection that they don't get a hold of your credit card number.. now they DO have my email so I'm expecting potential spam now after this experience)... and EQUALLY as important... I recommend CALLING any prospective restaurant you MIGHT like to try out using one of these coupons before you BUY one from Restaurant.com. Lastly, only buy ONE coupon to try it out for yourself FIRST.

I hope this helps someone else before they feel scammed. It was NOT a pleasant experience, but one I will not repeat again.

Also be forewarned about the possible unauthorized charges if you should use a credit card to pay. I called Paypal to put a note on my account should it happen to me. I've read that a company called Shopping Essentials Plus might get a hold to your credit card and start billing you monthly, starting the month after you buy a coupon at restaurant.com in the amount of $14.95. I alerted Paypal and they say it won't happen to me after they looked at my account. I hope not, but at least I learned beforehand from THIS website to watch out for it. Thanks for reading and don't be a troll. If you have something negative to say to ME, then explain yourself fully please. I DID scan over the fine print before buying from the site, but they obviously don't make it easy because they seem to intend to scam people AND the restaurant owners.

I've bought and used MANY certificates and E Cards from Restaurant.com; and have never have a problem! If I change my mind after I buy the certificate, I just go to the website and exchanged it into an E Card and then use that to buy a different certificate. No problem. Those who gripped about being surprised at the amount they had to spend above the face value of the certificate did NOT take the time to read what they were purchasing. It's Not hidden in small print off in some far away location either! It's right there it front of them-I don't know how you can possibly miss it! It's right there next to the button you click to purchase the certificate! Here's a tip: I also have always Called the restaurant First Before I went there to check and make sure that they were still accepting the certificates. This can avoid a lot of your problems in the first place! I'm 67 years old, and I don't have a cell phone, plus I don't even have a car. What I do have is "Common Sense"! Come on people, quit your multi tasking and take the time to use yours!

I redeemed Coke Reward Points to get a $100 Restaurant.com credit. Before I redeemed my points, I looked at the list of participating restaurants and found one in particular that I wanted to visit. After redeeming my points and getting an access code to Restaurants.com, the restaurant I had chosen doesn't appear in the participating restaurants list anymore! I called the number on the Restaurants.com website only to be told that they are limited as to the number of certificates they can offer per restaurant. I wasn't very happy about this as I had to redeem 1, 000 coke reward points for this $100 credit, but I decided to choose another restaurant. We were going out of town for the weekend - about a 3 hour drive - so I decided to see what was available in that area. I chose a restaurant on the list and redeemed $25 worth of my $100 credit (because it stated you had to spend $35 to use the certificate and we had never been to this restaurant before - therefore, I did not want to redeem the whole $100 credit) I had my husband, son, one of my son's friends and another guest with me and we went to the restaurant. Thank goodness I showed the waitress the certificate BEFORE we ordered! She informed me that they no longer honored the certificates and they had been contacting Restaurant.com since January of 2011 telling them to take them off of their list, but they had not done it yet. I bought the certificate on August 9th, 2011 and tried to use it on August 14th, 2011. It was quite and embarrassing event as it happened in front of my guests. I did call the number on the website again and told them what had happened and they issued an "exchange" credit to my account. I did find a couple of local restaurants on the list and I called them before I redeemed my credits, just to be sure they accept them and to verify if there were any "blackout" times that the certificate could not be used. I'm certainly glad I did not actually spend my money on this website. I would really have preferred to get my coke rewards points refunded to my account than use these certificates. To me it's a type of false advertisement. There is nothing that tells you BEFORE you redeem the coke points that you have to spend a minimum amount of money to use the certificates. Only after you redeem the points and try to choose a restaurant is this information revealed. Lesson learned.

Oh, I forgot to add this: The current website does state somewhere that you have to present the coupon before ordering your meal, so maybe that could have saved you some hassle and expense. Again, this is kind of standard practice, most stores do want you to present the coupon before ringing you up. Sorry it happened to you.

Thank you for the tip about using Pay Pal to avoid spurious charges, I will try that if I decide to purchase. I also agree with your suggestion to call every eating establishment before printing out their coupon to confirm they are still participating and the terms of use. I just called up nine restaurants in my area to check and see whether the terms listed for them on the website matched the restaurants' actual policy. For six out of nine the terms matched exactly, in two more the terms were a match but the website had failed to list some detail, such as not being available to use on a holiday or for the Sunday brunch. One out of the nine restaurants was in the middle of relocating and didn't plan to use the program again once they reopened, so the website information was out-of-date and erroneously showed the restaurant as participating when in fact they were not.

Many of the complaints I'm reading about the service seem to be based on not having fully read or understand the terms, for instance, not realizing that coupons of different face values require different minimum purchases. It took me a while of perusing the website to realize that the restaurant listings have radio buttons next to each coupon value for that business, and the conditions change depending on which button is selected; I can imagine this detail has been overlooked by other people as well.

Your story about the confusion at the restaurant where you went with your fiancé is one of those which gives me greater pause, in that the restaurant for which you printed a coupon apparently hadn't even agreed to participate. I don't know quite to make of this story and I wish I had more information about how such a thing could have happened.

Thank for you typing in the details of your printed coupon. I don't know whether the website has been recently improved in response to complaints or whether I am just more thorough than most people in reviewing the site, but most all of what was on the coupon is already on the website in some form. For what it's worth, "Void to the extent prohibited by law" is standard legalese. It just means that if for some reason in some jurisdiction the use of the coupon would be illegal, then it can't be used. Probably a non-issue.

I have to agree, the terms are very clearly spelled out and I always take the time to think about 1) how much $$ I think I will be spending at the restaurant to determine which level of coupon to buy since EVERY coupon requires a purchase in excess of the coupon value, and each required purchase order is clearly stated, and 2) what meal I plan to eat at the restaurant since some restaurants have add'l limits on usage, like dinner only or not valid for alcohol purchases, etc. Again, though, those stipulations are clearly stated prior to purchase. If you are able to use a discount code, slickdeals.net usually posts one every month, to get an add'l % off the cost of the coupon, like 60, 70 or 80% then you can purchase a restaurant.com coupon for a few bucks. I bought a $25 coupon for $2. I felt that even if I didn't ever end up using it, the cost to purchase is so low it's worth it to just go ahead and buy it. I did end up using it and the overall meal was still expensive, esp since it didn't taste that good, but at least it was $25 less than it would have otherwise been, which is good when you don't know whether the food quality will be good or not.

The terms of the coupons are available before checking out. There is no scam here - you guys just didn't read the terms before buying... EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE TO CLICK A BOX STATING THAT YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE TERMS PRIOR TO CHECKOUT.

This happened to me too and I should have read scam websites first because I did not find out that I have to spend $150 to use my $75 certificate until after I bought it. I read the frequently asked questions on their site and I found nothing about this, but it was crystal clear after I paid them. This is very deceiving indeed.

Restaurant.com Customer Service

I have been ordering from Restaurant.com for the past several months and have enjoyed the savings at various local restaurants. For the recent holiday, however, I ordered 20 general gift certificates from this company and it has been a disaster ever since. When one of the recipients printed the certificate for a specific restaurant listed on restaurant.com's website and went to use it, the restaurant told them they no longer participated in the program. I have attempted many times through email to restaurant.com to resolve the issue but the person who responded to my numerous emails is incapable or unwilling to understand and rectify the problem. Her last response was that the certificate had been used but when I asked her to give me the name of the restaurant it was used at, she decided not to respond. They have lost a frequent customer as I will never deal with them again. In addition, I will caution everyone I know not to deal with them.

I can not get an answer to what should be a simple question. I have posted the same question 3 times. Both thru email and phone, all I get is the run-around. This has given me the suspicion that customer service knows that they are running a scam and I am out money paid.

I've used many restaurant.com gift certs. On a couple of occasions, the restaurant refused to accept the coupon (both timed due to a dispute between the restaurant and restaurant.com). All it took was one email to restaurant.com customer support and they gave me enough credit to purchase another gift cert of equal value.

From reading the comments on this site, it does seem that they do seem to sell a load of goods to the restaurants. But, they do seem to take care of the consumers. Now, whenever I plan to use a restaurant.com gift cert, I call the restaurant BEFORE I leave home to ask if they still accept restaurant.com gift certs. That's alot better than having a very embarrassing situation at the END of a meal.

But, I have noticed that there is clearly resentment in the eyes of the restaurant managers and waiters whenever I pull out my restaurant.com gift cert. It looks like many restaurants sign up for the program and then regret it later only to discover that hundreds of certs have been sold already that must be honored.

This is a huge scam. Don't buy anything "certificates" from this website. They are not certificates, they are "coupons". You can only use ONE coupon per month per purchase and each purchase has to be a certain amount. I didn't find out the ONE coupon per month per purchase policy until after the purchase was made. The term of the coupon can only be accessed...

Restaurant.com Fraudulent/deceptive ways

I bought 4 gift certificates worth 25$ each at restaurant.com valid only online through mrsfields.com. It was on a sunday, so I couldn't inquire either of them (restaurant.com or mrsfields.com) about the expiry and the minimum order. I came to know about the fraud after I bought the mrsfilds.com certificates that I need to purchase a minimum of 75 dollars (excluding shipping charges) and can use only one coupon for redemption at checkout. so, I need to pay 50 dollars from my pocket everytime I make a purchase. Buyers, be aware.

I've used numerous certificates and except for the poor service at the one restaurant I have nothing but good things to say about the site. I read the disclaimers and fully understand before making purchases. Makes no sense why people ### and complain about things THEY should have know from reading. Perfectly good site from a consumers perspective. Will continue to use.

That is stated on each restaurant offer...the total bill MUST exceed a certain amount.

It also generally states..."excludes Alcohol, taxes and gratuity"...some also state an 18% gratuity will be added PRIOR to deducting the certificate, that so their servers aren't shorted by the certificates.

There were many certificates I didn't purchase for these, and other reasons

Do you read terms and conditions before you check out on any online company? I sure do. If you read the terms that were listed at check out on restaurant.com, as well as under 'terms' at the bottom of their website, and one each individual restaurants' /online partner site within the restaurant.com website, you would have seen that you can only redeem one per order and there would be a minimum order. Also when you click on 'more info' on the online partners tabs they state the minimum..I just checked myself. Seems to me like someone just doesn't like to read before entering a credit card online, which is stupid!

Restaurant.com Bad service

The day before my aniversary I decided to buy my husband a gift certificate from Restaurant.com, paid right away $40 and my aniversary was ruined, had to tell my husband I have bought something that did not arrive (nov 15), as his birthday was yesterday, though at least would be able to use it by them and invite him for a nice dinner. Tried to call more than 30 times, for the past 5 days, no matter what day or what time there is nobody that ever picks up the phone and you are always forced to leave a message (what I did not as I dont like to talk to machines) I also emailed customer service twice and no answer. NOW I MIGHT HAVE TO WAIT 45 DAYS OR MORE TO HAVE MY MONEY BACK... the good thing is that I used a wonderful company PAYPAL and They will help me retrieve my money from this company. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS PEOPLE, CUSTOMER SERVICE OFFERS NO SERVICE!

I love restaurant.com. I just bought about 40 certificates and used my printer to print them out.

I have so far used 3 certificates so far.

I always purchase additional items, such as a cocktail, appertizer and coffee & dessert.

I am still saving $25 and have a wonderful full course meal.

The people that are complaining are probably the type of people that the restaurant can do without because all they want to do is spend the $25 and they will never return.

The one time I purchased a coupon for a restaurant that had closed, they cheerfully replaced it with a different restaurant with no question or problem. I have purchased coupons for various area restaurants and had great experiences. You must print the coupons on your own home printer!

the certificates are not mailed to you, you have to print them on your computer. also, about not getting in touch with them by phone, check the no. had no problem calling them at all. some times a rest. will either go out of business or stop participating in the program, i had no problem redeeming a cert. for another rest. GREAT COMPANY...have many more to use !

Restaurant.com unauthorized purchases with my credit card

I am writing about restaurant.com and the scam they are doing to custmers who purchase gift certicates on their site. It is unethical, and they are doing it for ecomomic gain without your consent.
When you purchase a gift certificate, you are unwillingly letting them sign you up for a company called Shopping Essentials which bills your credit card for $14.95 per month. Restaurant.com has over 3, 000, 000 visits per month and about 5% of people purchase the gift certificate. If 150, 000 gift certificates are sold per month and they are billing $14.95 per month, it works out to $2, 242, 500 per month. Thats a huge number and they are doing it without your knowlege. I bought my gift certificate in May of 2008 and my first bill for Shopping Esstentials was July 2008. Apparently they wait a month so you forget that you purchased it over the internet and dont link it to them. As a restaurant consumer, I am appalled that a company would steal money from me in this nature. As a restaurant owner, I would not allow my reputation in the community be destroyed because some company is scamming my customers. Its not the restaurants fault, they DO NOT receive any money and are unaware its happening. They are legitimate, and using the program correctly. Restaurant.com should be ashamed of themselves for scamming unsuspecting people from their hard earned money, and also risking the restaurants reputation by cross selling products customers are not seeking. I hope the restaurant owners out there are reading this because you are unwillingly scamming your customers without your consent. Pass this on to restaurants. I am.

I have had a same experience with restaurant.com. Two years ago after buying certificates from it and looking at credit card statement a few months later, I noticed a monthly $14.95 charge from Shopping Esstentials which is the result of buying the certificates from restaurant.com. At that time, it was too late to file an complain tp credit card issuer and get money back. I will never do any business with restaurant.com!

I just emailed you a couple of days ago. I sent a link to this
site to a district manager for restaurant.com I am happy to
say that after weeks of struggling to cancel a restaurant contract with restaurant.com I received a telephone call day
cancelling the contract and taking down our restaurant from
their site. I am so happy to be rid of the fraudulent service
that prays upon both the restaurant owners and their customers. Believe me restaurant owners do not want to
participate with such businesses. You are so right they have
never responded to any emails that I have sent or telephone
messages other than transferring me and putting me on hold
on a voice mail.

Restaurant.com Scam and unauthorized charges!

In July 2007, I signed up for a coupon on restaurant.com to a restaurant near where I work. In JANUARY, Shopping Essentials Plus (an on-line shopping site of some kind) began charging my credit card for some type of membership fee for some type of services I never knew about and never requested. I traced the charges back to restaurant.com, but they claimed I must have signed up for Shopping Essentials Plus when I filled out an on-line questionnaire on their site.

I went back and reviewed restaurant.com's terms and conditions of use, and it states nothing about giving your credit card information to Shopping Essentials Plus, which is exactly what they did, without permission. Restaurant.com claimed no responsibility and simply referred me to Shopping Essentials Plus.

When I called Shopping Essentials Plus, I have to say, they were very nice. The lady I spoke to, Kanika, was apologetic and said she would credit the the membership charges back to my card. Restaurant.com was clearly not apologetic at all.

look ppl if you do read the fine print its all there if someone gets info about a rest obvisouly they have sighned up, they dont pull the inffo out of the sky now do they?

I had the same problem...soo embarrassing! The last one I tried to used was posted as "new"...the clerk told me they no longer have a business relationship...I am scared of using the other ones I bought...

We have been to two restaurants that have refused to honor the Restaurants.Com certificates which we purchased last week (at 80% off), both claiming that neither of them have a relationship/contract with Restaurants.com.
This was not an issue with time of day, total amount of purchase, etc. or other fine print of which I am aware.
This is smelling like a big scam!

READ ALL OF THE FINE PRINT! Yes some have stipulations. ex. spend $35 min excludes alcohol and includes 18% gratuity. They are not fake or a scam to me. I just used one at a local diner. Our bill was $45.00 the cost was $22.00. As with anything real the fine print. Call the restaurant, ask them if it's legit. Common sense people.

Invariably, the people taken advantage of in these circumstances are always men who are in a hurry and are naive to these "opt-out" boxes to check or uncheck. I know this discussion area doesn't qualify as "scientific", but it is nevertheless interesting that all the men were "ripped off" and the two women respondents easily handled the requirements to avoid being "ripped off". Men are supposed to be the "Hunters", women the "Gatherers" from the beginning of time. This is a perfect example of bad hunters who got caught by the sabre-toothed tiger... Having learned this lesson I have taught my son how to avoid being "scammed", and you guys ought to learn from your mistakes, and pass it on to your male offspring, the girls you produce will be able to figure it out on their own - they are all born with the "shopping gene" which is akin to that "gatherer" business... Learn to hunt...

Glad you had such a good experience, Dave. I spoke with them very politely and worked my way up the pecking order, but they were adamant about only returning one month. Based on my Googling, it is clear that they only have pissed off customers. My credit card company crammed a second refund down their throats, but I am still out 10 payments of 11.95. So, now, I am on a campaign to let the world know that Chase Bank and our legal system allows obvious criminals to sucker the public.

Dave again...

After my last post, I spoke to a representative of Shopping Essentials plus, and she passed me on to a supervisor who confirmed that I will be getting back all of the fees that they took from my account. I just looked in my account, and indeed there has been credits for every one of my payments, which added up to the total fees that I calculated. The whole situation took under a week to resolve.

To the companies credit, (or perhaps to the credit of their customer reps...) the refund process was relatively painless. I spent more time fretting than I did dealing with the company. My instinct was to ready myself for a high blood pressure inducing battle, but I just kept calm and everything went okay.

If you just call Shopping Essentials and be nice and explain that you didn't know you were signing up for SE+, you will hopefully have the same experience I had.

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. I just got an email confirming my "membership" cancellation (where by membership I mean they take money out of my account) and they are only refunding one month of fees. I sent an email telling them I want my entire fee history back and will call later this afternoon.

I fell for the same thing as the OP, and my girlfriend just discovered the problem after over a year of charges (I'm pretty bad at checking out my bank account info... my own personal failure...)

I just got off the phone with a representative from Shopping Essentials. I didn't have an account number and the system did not recognize my phone number, so I waited for a representative to pick up the line; she took my email address, which apparently pulled my account successfully since she asked me if I was the person whose name was on the account.

I explained my situation in the following way (paraphrased, of course):

"I signed up for restaurants.com last January, and was unwittingly signed up for shopping essentials as well; I have never signed into your web site and was not aware of the charges, and I would like to have my account cancelled and a refund of my payments."

I tried to sound nice as possible, as the person on the phone with me is NOT the person who devised what may be considered a scam; they just want to do their job.

The individual that I spoke with told me that she'd credit my bank account and cancel my shopping essentials account, and gave me her name and a confirmation number.

I REALLY don't know how I signed up for this; I'm the type of person who avoids signing up for anything that might lead to spam, ignores all "special offers, " and I'm very net-savvy and protective of my information. I'm not presuming that my "No, thanks" to the offer was ignored, but I'm just puzzled by the whole situation.

I'll come back here in a few days to let everyone know if this case is closed successfully.

I messed up trying to purchase gift certificates each one of these Customer Service Rep's were all 10's...
when I sent out an email for help they all immediately responded and resolved each of my issues.

It is a wonderful experience to have a knowledgeable rep help you. A+'s to each of them.

On November 2, 2011, I purchased a $25 certificate for $10. When I hit the "print" button, a center message popped up giving a message about the coupon: I must have a $50 minimum purchase. Minimum purchases were not mentioned in their "terms and conditions". The next day, I called [protected], and spoke with an agent named Julie Krumwidee. I explained the above information. After checking with her boss, she credited back the $10.00. She explained that since i just became a member on the day (11/2) I made the purchase, she would give me a one-time courtesy favor of reversing the charge. I remained pleasant the entire time and she mirrored back great customer service. Just remember...if it sounds too good to be true, read the entire fine print. When I revisited restaurant.com and the restaurant site, the minimum purchase was actually stated on the screen: There was a message in red that said something about a promo code, and then right under it in black print, was "on a minimum purchase of $50". I was too much in a hurry to read EVERYTHING!

My friend, Charlie, earned $100 in gift certificates with Restaurant.com. I assisted him in printing out $50 worth of certificates in January 2011. Recently, We attempted to print out the remaining $50 but could not find a current portal for access. Upon sending an email to the website's customer service dept., I received a prompt and helpful reply from William Weimer of Restaurant.com.
We have obtained the remaining gift certifcates and we are thankful to Mr. Weimer for his excellent customer service.

I live in San Rafael, California. I bought the $25 gift certificate for $2.00. I don't own a printer so I emailed Restaurant.com my situation and certificate number.

A week later Bryan in Customer Service emailed me he had mailed my certificate to me from Chicago. It arrived today for a great local restaurant.

I don't think the minimum purchase amount changing is fraud, it's a matter of website design. Apparently a lot of people don't see that the radio buttons to the left of the coupon values (on the list of participating restaurants) are meant to be selected and the conditions listed below will change accordingly. Did you really think you were going to use a coupon for $50 off on a meal of $35, thus getting the meal practically for free? What would be the point, to the restaurant? "Come on in, folks, free food!"

The other two complaints do not divulge sufficient detail. Is there some disagreement about the time frame in which free promo discount coupons can be used? I don't understand the disagreement.

And Mr./Ms. Runyon, in what way were you overcharged?

Sorry, but none of this was very helpful.

these people hide behind the legal agreement when you set up the account. The fraud is that the minimum amount changes as you select the coupon you want.

Then when you get the coupon wow watch out, you will get screwed. An honest vendor would have returned the money if a customer was not satisfied with one week.

I have a copy of the promotion email sent to me, however since you are being very stubborn about making good on your deal and also not willing to give a refund, I will once again ask nicely for either a refund or my free certificate. If you decide on neither I will forward the promotional email to the local BBB and the local fox TV investigator, and have them both contact you for resolution. In case you forgot here is the infor once again!

They ripped me off. I reread it and there was nothing about giving my creditcard to another company. I got the 'survey' line also, and the only thing on the site is an already marked box stating if you want to hear of other offers type of thing.

Hello, I recently bought some certificate from restaurant.com. The purchase was paid with my credit and but I didn't not receive any certificate. I try to contact the company about the certificate through multiple emails and phone calls. I didn't get a reply through email and when I try to call no one pick up the phone. I hope that no one will do business with this company because it is all just a scam. DK
