Other than TurboTax having minimal and useless customer service, an all around horrible product that you can get most other places for a fraction of the price and continuously send you emails even though you never agreed to recieve any- you cannot delete your account. You cannot cancel your membership. I wanted my PERSONAL information out of their database, out of the hands of their affiliates and after searching with a fine-toothed comb through the website for some way to get out, I emailed the comapany. Two days later I recieved this email:
Dear TaxACT(R) Customer:
If you wish to discontinue using our services at any time during the tax season, you may simply abandon your online return. If you would like to remove all personal data from your return, simply log back into your return and remove or replace any personal information with fictitious data.
You may also disable your account by signing in to your return at www.taxactonline.com. Then click the link "My TaxACT"; click "Update your Account Information"; click "Disable your Account". On the following screen you will see a link to permanently disable the account.
Thank you for using TaxACT. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Hows that for protecting your identity from identity theft? I can't help but think this website and the whole process is a scam and a phishing website. It's too late, I signed up for a low priced e-file and they wanted to charge me over $40 for a state return. Crooks. I got the same thing from a similar website for less than $20 and now these people have all my personal information and never supplied me with a thing.
It is TAXACT not TurboTax, my wife used TurboTax and was happy with it. Now TurboTax has a complaint againt them they don't deserve. I'm going to repost this for the correct company, but I cannot delete this post. Wish there was a way to edit it or remove it. It says "please check spelling before submitting a comment"- well, Please check your complaining about the right company before sumbitting complaint.
I'm the ### among ### in this meadow. Thanks for the tip KixStar.
So wait, is this about TurboTax or TaxAct?
TurboTax cost us $60 plus $50 for the 2 states we had to do taxes for... so for a total of $110, it found $3200 in refunds for us. TurboTax is awesome.
Okay. I was so confused by your use of both companies in the post.
Yeah... TurboTax is excellent. :)
great my a_ _ turbo tax was a ripoff as far as i'm concerned it was suppose to be free and end up paying 2 /29.95 fee's for what idon't know and the IRS says they have no record of me fileing a tax return for this 2010
Turbo Tax has dubious business practices. They will sign you up to Turbotax advantage without your knowledge, then they will automatically sell you the product and charge your credit card, about 6 months before tax time! This happened to me last year and I called them and they said I was removed from Turbotax advantage, but this year, they started the same thing again. They sent me both paper and email to tell me that I was subscribed and that the product would be charged to my credit card...
I have now contacted them again, plus removed by credit card. I'm apparently no longer subscribed to Turbotax advantage, but then again, I was also unsubscribed last year and that did not prevent them from me being subscribed again this year.
Out of frustration, I requested my account deleted and they told me that they no longer delete accounts... I tried and tried to no avail. They escalated the request to supervisors, the support team. I was on the phone for 1 hour and 14 minutes and all I could accomplish was to get them to say they're sorry, but they do not delete accounts anymore.
So, I changed my name to Return To Sender and gave the California department of consumer affair's address and telephone number. Perhaps if enough frustrated California Turbo Tax customers do that and Consumer Affairs gets enough junk mail, Turbo Tax will have an incentive to allow people to delete their accounts again.
What a slimy company!
I came to this thread because I was looking for a place to post my nightmarish Turbo Tax experience. Tax Act is great! No problems with them. So here's what heppened to me with Turbo Tax. Details are abbreviated, this is basically the email I sent them. Should be fairly self-explanatory: "Dear Turbo Tax,
First of all, you misspelled my name --and it's on my email and I spelled it out for your agent.
Secondly, this has been a nightmare experience. Verify my identity? What identity? I deleted ALL my personal information and all you had was a userid, email and password. I'm warning you, if there is any compromise of the personal information I had to provide to delete this account there will be legal ramifications.
Over an hour on the phone with two different agents, one of whom hung up on me, asked to provide all kinds of personal information, followed by an email asking for even more personal information, followed by a message stating it may be days before this is done and I still haven't been able to get rid of this unwanted account.
Mind you, I have never, ever filed a tax return with Turbo Tax and, after this, I guarantee you I never will. Nor will I ever sign up for or register with any other service provided by this parent company. This is just outrageous! I will make sure my story goes far and wide to discourage anyone else from using Turbo Tax now or in the future.
Oh --and to add insult to injury, your software came up with the exact same figures as one of your competitors. I filed with them. Their cost was $29.99. You wanted to charge $104. Add price gouging on top of information extortion. What a horrible company.
SIncerely furious,
TaxAct isn’t the same program as TurboTax.
