I rented a u-haul truck in Dec 2011 and returned it and got my deposit back less charges I owed. In Dec. 2012 U-haul sent me a letter stating $50 for a ticket. I did not receive a ticket from anyone for anything, I sent a letter to U-haul informing them that did not get a ticket and to please explain why after year I received ticket info from them. No...

U-Haul International useless service and customer service

I found Movinghelp.com through Uhaul.com. But there is no information on the people who will be moving your things except for a rate they charge and a few reviews. I called movinghelp to find out what kind of insurance a specific mover had, and was told they have no information about their insurance and there is no way to find out until after I purchase the service. LOL. Beyond useless, who would use this? "Buy our service, we'll let you know all about it right after you give us money"

U-Haul International unfair fuel policy

[protected] is the contract number with JTS electronics, 5735 north state st, alma, mi 48801 i picked up a uhaul truck which was parked on uneven suface, which can cawse fuel gauge to mis read the actual contents of fuel tank... it did misread the contents by approximately 3 gallons or more... the needle was actually just under and barely touchung the 1/4 tank mark... after pulling the vehicle onto level surface the gauge promptly dropped to accomadate the proper fuel level which was in the 57 gallon tank, poof... i just lost 15-20 dollars in fuel, watt a scam... im a tool and die maker and previous drag racer... no fooling me on this kinda scam, ive seen it all before... i got a witness seeing both situations... and i know the exact mechanics and hydraulics of what happened, its simple grade school math, and geometry... i havent drove the truck but mabee 12 miles and its eaten up almost 1/4 tank of fuel according to the dealers calculations... i will contest/complain of this upon return of vehicle and i will keep this complaint updated as well as possible... everything is/will be witnessed and or photos/movies taken for evidence... frank boyd, ([protected]@yahoo.com)

U-Haul International Poor, unsafe trailer hitch installation

Good morning,
Allow me to vent my experience with U-Haul installation of a trailer hitch.
On 8/9/2011, my wife went to U-Haul on 878 Memorial Dr, Chicopee, MA to have a trailer hitch installed on our 2006 Jeep Commander. It seem, while waiting, two of installers were having an argument, and in the process, was using profane language, yelling and swearing as it went along. The manager at the counter was also cursing at these two guys to quiet down, but it continued_ After a couple of hours, my wife paid the bill, and left. She relayed what happened to me, and I shrugged it off, but thought how unprofessional and tacky that was for a customer to have to witness this nonsense.
A few days later, I hooked up my trailer and checked the lights, but they were not working. I didn't want to go back to the Chicopee, MA U-Haul, so I went to the Westfield, MA office to see if they could straighten it out. While there, the installer pointed out to me that the installer in Chicopee hadn't installed a ground wire (he even admitted that was a stupid mistake!) I also purchased the hitch ball, ball drop and pinclip assembly from Westfield.
Because the Jeep isn't used on a regular basis, I was stopped by a local police officer, and he informed me that I had a taillight out. The bulb looked ok, but I replaced the bulb and fuse just in case. Then, I noticed all kinds of strange things happening to the rear lights. For instance, if you put either directional light on, both would blink (like if the flashers were on, ) right rear bulbs were dimmer than the left side. I checked all the fuses, bulbs and ground wires on the taillight housings, but everything was ok. That's when I decided to go to the Jeep dealer, and have them run a diagnostic check on the car to see what the problem was. The mechanic informed me that what was causing all the strange taillight problems was the trailer hitch wiring. Some wires were not even connected, some were connected wrong, and some were corroded due to exposure to the elements under the vehicle (I live in the stormy Northeast.) After the U-Haul wiring was disconnected, the lights all worked fine, so I had the mechanic remove the trailer wiring, and I am now looking to find a qualified installer to wire my hitch.
I keep going back to the initial install in Chicopee, were the two idiots were arguing, and realize why this kit wasn't installed properly_ What would have happened if my family was involved in a rear-end collision because of the rear lights not working correctly?
To sum up here, you need to examine your installer's credentials before allowing them to splice into a vehicle's lighting system, because someone's life may depend on them doing a competent job!

U-Haul International the $19.95 rental ended up costing $98.00

Rented truck in Oakland California. Customer service was good and there was no problem with the truck. However when you see 19.95 advertise on the side of the truck you believe the rental is $19.95. What is not mentioned is that you are charged .89 a mile, which is acceptable, except you are charged for 50 miles upfront even if you do not drive 50 miles. The $19.95 rental ended up costing $98.00. It is actually cheaper to rent a panel van from Enterprise, you get free mileage.

U-Haul International horrible employment

I want to start by saying that the reason I'm posting as anonymous and not giving the specific location in Houston Texas, is because I need this particular manager to give me a good job review when contacted in the future. He promised to tell the truth about my performance and say I worked there for a whole year after I threatened to out him for drinking on the job every day.

I worked for U-Haul for a short time and I busted my ###. I went above and beyond, got GREAT reviews from customers as detailed in person, and on U-haul's company website, and from co-workers, and was never once late or absent. I was trained at at sub-par level, at warp speed, and I STILL managed to get by without screwing up...that I knew of. Basically, they hired me on, didn't spend enough time training me, nor did they train me properly, and then they fired me without notice because I had made mistakes that I didn't know I was making. I didn't even know I didn't have a job until 2 weeks after it happened and I only found out because I went in and cornered the manager to find out why I hadn't been scheduled. I thought it was another typical situation where they didn't schedule me for a week, then put all 40 hours on me the 2nd week of the pay period. This time gap caused 2 utilities to be cut off and my children to go hungry because I didn't have time to find other employment before my bills were due. I also turned down 2 other jobs during that 2-week period that could have saved me financially.

They promoted themselves during the interview by telling me about how they're the 11th best company in the country to work for part-time because of their great medical benefits. In reality, the medical benefits are crap, and the only reason they rank at that level is because they compensate by paying you peanuts for the ridiculous amounts of responsibility they place upon you with little to no help from the managers. The job responsibilities DO NOT match the insulting pay. Not even close. I've been paid twice that for half the work.

Also, the managers that run the store make the schedules and, at my location, they ALWAYS scheduled themselves off for the high-traffic times. Shortly after I was hired, and after I had only had 30 hours of employment under my belt, my managers decided to take the busiest week of the entire year off for vacation, and then take their days off from the typical work week immediately following those vacation days. I was left alone that week to run the store with one other employee who was hired after me, and was a complete idiot who screwed up so much that I don't even know how he still works there. The only other employee, who had been there for 8 months, was only scheduled for 2 days during that time, and when he was there, he wouldn't stop flirting with me and reminding me of how beautiful I am. The rotating manager who was scheduled to help us for 3 days during that time, sat in the back, read the newspaper, and refused to help us, or even answer any questions because, in his words, "I'm here to handle customers who ask for me when y'all f*** up, speak to higher-ups on the phone, and make sure y'all don't steal. That's all." The only reason that store wasn't run into the ground during the managers vacation time, is because of my extensive experience in retail, and as a manager/supervisor in other industries. EVEN DURING MY OFF TIME, I accepted phone calls from the store throughout the day, came in to help because the other employees begged me to, did damage control, and basically took on the role of manager for the other employees, including the one who had been there for 8 months prior to my hiring. I was referred to as a "rock star" by the other 2 employees AND the lazy rotating manager, as a result of my exceptional performance during the managers vacation. I was sure I was on a trajectory to be promoted within 6 months. Boy was I wrong. It's clear that I was only hired to hold down the fort while the managers were on vacation because I was fired when they came back. I think everything that happened to me was completely planned by the managers and I think they seriously felt threatened by my performance, work ethic, and ability to learn the job at warp speed.

Unfortunately this is not all. During my training, I was instructed by the manager to input false information into the computer when qualifying the customers to rent a truck or trailer. Insurance is required to rent the newer vehicles and I was instructed to fill in the blanks with whatever I felt like to get the truck rented and make the customer happy. Also, during the trailer rental process, the manager told me to ALWAYS input the hitch rating and cargo weight limit at 6, 000, regardless of what the truth was. This would cause a SERIOUS safety issue, but the manager didn't care. He only cared to keep his profits at #2 in the district.

U-Haul International service

U haul rented us a truck in the afternoon and we discovered that when you drove it on the expressway, it spit hot water at you through the heat vents. When we called Uhaul they directed us to call their garage. A guy at the garage told us it was drivable and that we needed to drive it back to them. After a much heated debate on the danger to us for driving this truck they relented. We now needed a new truck and they did not have one available. They were calling around looking when my mother called the city I live in which is Howell, Michigan to see if they had a 17 foot truck. They claimed they did so we set it up so that I could pick up the truck in Howell, no problem. When I got to Howell the big fat guy in the office told us he got some phone call about a truck but he wasn't listening to the whole thing so he had no information and would have to start from scratch. He seemed amused at our predicament and did more explaining than working. I explained that because of this truck problem we were now under a time constraint as we were paying movers by the hour who were sitting around waiting. After 20 minutes or so I told him I didn't appreciate that he knew we were coming and did not bother to even start the paper work until we got there and that was all I had to say on the subject and I turned to walk out the door. As I was walking out the fat slob yelled for me to "get out". I yelled back through the door, "you didn't throw me out ###, I left". He came charging outside to confront me. I told him I was out here not bothering him but he on the other hand was outside bothering me. Eventually, he gave us a truck and wound up giving us an smaller truck, of which, of course they charged us for the bigger truck. The consequences are it cost us $80.00 in mover's fees when they were waiting around. Uhaul put us hours behind and felt no need to hurry or make our problem with the truck minimal. They were rude and disrespectful and made us stressed and angry. I will NEVER use them again. Absolutely, horrible customer service.

U-Haul International fraud/dishonest/out to rip people off

Uhaul can be an excellent, convenient and affordable option when it comes time to move. This in itself ca be stressful enough, do yourself a favor and choose a different Uhaul location.

The bottom line is that I was completely ripped me off. It was the owner of this location that was intentionally deceitful from my experience and from what I witnessed that is his standard operating procedure. I have rented many moving trucks in my life; of which the majority have been from many different Uhaul locations. I have never done business with a company that clearly operates with the intention of tacking on extra charges to generate more revenue wherever they can. This is obviously to the detriment of their customer. My first clue should have been when I notice that they were running new credit card authorizations against my card every other day during my 7 day rental. In the end, he only got away with charging me for an additional day for the truck, moving blankets, an dolly rental fees. He was able to keep this because my truck was logged-in as being returned 15 minutes late. At least 5 minutes of that time was spent waiting for him to make the time to check the truck back in. In addition he attempted charge me for additional gas, claiming that when I picked up the truck it had more gas than he had indicated on my original paperwork, a cleaning fee, he tried to claim damage that he knew existed prior to my renting the vehicle, and the offenses go on.

Thankfully, I was able to successfully dispute the other erroneous charges he trie to tack on to my bill. His reason was that the

U-Haul International unreliable, lousy service

I was very disappointed with the way my reservation was handled. We reserved almost a month in advance and were told the day before the move that equipment was unavailable because the "reservation was pulled." We were depending on this company and they let us down. As a result, we have found another company and want to warn others about this incident with u-haul so that they can choose a different service as well. DO NOT DEPEND ON UHAUL!

U-Haul International misrepresentation

Uhaul takes resevations for moving trucks, etc. online. The reservation doesn't mean squat. The actual location doesn't get any info from Uhaul until 24 hours before you pick up. If the local location has taken reservations on their own, then those customers get the equipment first. If there isn't any equipment left...TOUGH. You can reserve a truck weeks in advance and it doesn't mean a thing.

U-Haul International overcharged/racial discrimation

I was charged 38.10 for 2 gallons of gas and 30.00 late fee or service fee which he called it. My truck was not late, I was told I could drop it off at the location in harrisburg upon rental, I was a little short on gas and would pay a fee but 38.10 was not fair and the person was very rude he spoke to me in a tone that I knew he was racist. 30.00 for his fee for whatever he wanted it to be. I will not pay this 68.10 I plan on fighting this for as long as I need to.

Hey Truth maybe the person who made the complaint does'nt have any more details to give? Seems like anymore people seem to just want to make allegations & assumptions, When they are Not claiming Discrimination, They are Over Playing that Race Card. When I went to MI. In 2003 to get My Deceased Mothers Personal Belongings, U-Haul would'nt even let me Rent a Truck from them that I could drive from MI. To Wy. I did Not Claim Discrimination, I paid somebody to put an Engine in my Truck & went back to get My Mothers Property that I had to pay Storage on.When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade!

How do you know he was being a Racist? Your Just Assuming that as you really were Not inside his head & Have No Clue what he was thinking, What are you a Human Cat Scan Machine? Maybe you just had an Attitude, much like the Attitude that you have put on display here for Us all to see & that was just how he chose to handle the situation with you? For Every Action- There's a Reaction, Thats Human Nature, And the Color of a persons skin has Nothing to do with that. I've Rented U-Hauls before the Contract I signed stated that I needed to replace the Gas I used before I returned the U-Haul, Why did'nt You just comply with the Contract You Signed?Quite sure your Contract contained the same Clause, Since U-Haul is Everywhere, I doubt that they wrote a Special Contract Just for You based on Your Race.Could it be Your Just an Attention Seeker & Want to Play that Race Card because You think it will get you sympathy? Or do You think that You are Special because of your race?Maybe you think that If You play that Race Card, They will just give you your money back?Or maybe you feel that your entitled to Special Treament because of your race & If you play that Race Card You will get it?Would like to know when it's my turn to play that Race Card? I'm a Wrinkled Up, Cranky Old White Woman with Arthritis, Gray Hair, & Liver Spots? Wheres My Race Card?

U-Haul International false mileage

I recently rented a truck from U-Haul. I ended up needing to keep the truck for about four extra hours and understood the charges on the contract for such an extension. What I didn't expect was a 100+ dollar debit to come out of my checking account two weeks later for "extra mileage." I knew I'd be charged 40 cents per extra mile used, but U-Haul charged me for 253 extra miles, when I did maybe 60 extra miles max. I made a local move from a section of Georgia maybe twenty minutes for the other. There is no way I traveled anywhere near 253 miles. I documented the mileage at pick up and at drop off and shocker, the numbers don't mach those on U-Haul's invoice. I've tried time after time to call and speak to someone helpful, but everyone is rude, useless, and generally a waste of my time. How lovely for U-Haul that they can manipulate numbers to charge people for miles never used. Must be nice to be able to steal from people then say "well, too bad. Our numbers are correct." This guy I spoke to today said "we've never had this type of complaint before and we're not accusing you of anything but..." What happened to the customer being right? What happened to hearing someone out before you dismiss their complaint as "nope, nothing we can do." I wonder if anyone else has had this happen - did anyone else get charged for extra miles they didn't use? One thing's for sure - I will NEVER use U-Haul again. They are crooks. If you haven't already, be warned don't use them ever unless you want money stolen from you.

U-Haul International overcharged

On June 10th, 2011, we picked up a 26foot Uhaul truck, with a car dolly, as well as 3 moving dollies. We moved from Corpus Christi that day, to Richmond, TX. Being the weekend, we had to schedule to drop truck off at an after hours drop off location which was about an hour from our new home. Saturday evening at 7pm we loaded up our 3 young children, and followed my husband who was driving the empty uhaul truck. We made it into Houston but could not find the location. So we called Customer Service, they were kind in directing us, however they were sending us in circles. We called a total of 7 times, telling them we could not find the store. The 7th person finally told us that the location we were looking for was not an after hours drop off location! So he directed us to a different store, over an hour away. By this time is was almost 930pm, and I didn't really care. Just wanted to get the truck dropped off. And get safely home. The area we were directed to was very dangerous, high crime location. Remember we had 3 babies in the car with us, driving all over downtown houston. But now this man sends us to a different location, and directs us to WRONG WAY..so we end up driving 45 minutes in the wrong direction! By the time we turned around, drove back and dropped off truck, it was past 11pm. We put the dollies in the cab, cleaned out our trash and left the keys in the drop. As you can imagine our weekend was ruined.
MOnday I called to ensure everything was okay. They told me if there was a problem they'd let me know. That was on June 13th.
So, why, on June 22nd is there an additional $295.55 charge from Uhaul? Which I only discovered because while I was shopping for groceries/diapers my card was declined. I am now being charged 4 additional overdraft fees because all my money was stolen by uhaul.
I've gotten the run around all last night and this morning. I really don't know if I'll get my money back or not.
The GM at that location said he made a mistake about the dolly and will refund us! Really? How do you just accidentally make a mistake? So what about the rest of the 235 dollars in charges? He said there was nothing he could do?
So do I have to file a police report? Or what?
Because we didn't buy their insurance, he said we have to pay for repairs done to the truck. But we didn't damage it at all. He said it's too late because repairs have already been done. But if there was actual damage, I asked if they have surveilance on their property to see if it was vandalized Saturday evening, he said he "highly doubted that" Even though his store is located in crime central.
Uhaul is a big rip off. That must be why they're so big. They rip off people a little here and a little there.
I suggest Budget truck rental. We had MUCH better luck with them.

Proper Inspections of Equipment Needed:
With the regular use of equipment for both local and long-distance moves, it is highly recommended for U-Haul to have their equipment on an inspection routine to address items prior to emergency repairs. They have turned into a band-aid style of maintenance that places customers and the general public at risk. I currently have a tow dolly, rented from 'an authorized retailer' for U-Haul and have endured three separate repair stops on a 3000 mile trip. Two of these stops have been for a taillamp issue - constant failure due to both cut wires and a bad LED assembly (finally diagnosed by one of their techs - had to drive 30 miles off of my planned trip route, but was fixed); third stop was for a blown wheel bearing (thankful I wasn't driving at time) - had to have their dispatched contractor replace the entire hub assembly.
I'm only 1800 miles into my trip, let's see what the remaining 1200 miles has in store. See attached pics for evidence.

U-Haul International horror story and do not recommend them

We rented a 26′ truck from U-Haul, one month prior to our scheduled move from New York to Dallas on November 28 2009. I had made all the arrangements with the movers and my husband had made an arrangement to buy a car in Dallas on the day of our arrival.

The people who are selling us their car were moving to another state but they’ve decided to wait for a couple of more days until we arrive so that they can sell their car. On Friday at 5pm (about 15 hours prior to the scheduled delivery time, and right after everything closes) U-Haul gives us a call to say that they don’t have a truck for Saturday but we can get it for Sunday.

We are moving from an office building and the freight elevators on Sunday are closed unless you make prior arrangements. Friday at 5pm we had no time to make these arrangements and now our move is automatically scheduled for two days later which is the Monday right after Black Friday weekend where it will be impossible to park the truck near the freight entrance because of the volume of delivery trucks on busy Monday mornings.

I have looked at uhaul reviews on the internet and saw that many people posted similar comments. I should have looked at those before. I hope someone else reads this before making their decision with U-Haul.

I have rented from U-Haul a number of times and have been rather satisfied with the services I have received. This rental was a far cry from all prior uses of a U-Haul rental, and not for the better. I will never rent from this location again and advise others with BUYER BEWARE. The location is 830 Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, CO. The U-Haul Customer Resolution form does not provide the ability to attach an image that I could find.

I rented a U-Haul van for 2 days (12/21 to 12/23/20). As I pulled up to the office I noticed a van nearby, that obviously had recently been returned, based on the notable road spray on it from a recent snowfall. I did the paperwork and the lady in charge said I could take the one that just came in, which turned out to be the dirty one. I asked her if it had been sanitized yet. She replied "Yes" as she went to get the gas level for the paper work. (I question how good the van inside was cleaned, as I later discovered a zipper pull on the floor.) On my way home from picking up the van I stopped at a local gas station to top off the tank since it was barely above 5/8 full. This was fortunate as will be seen later.

I had to extend the rental for one day more. When I returned the van on 12/24/20 the same lady was there again. The van rents for $19.95/day, but she charged me $79 for that extra day. She claimed that she always does that as people use the van during the extended days and that adds miles. I told her I had a car that I used at the destination, so there were no added miles on the van. (At this point I did not yet know that my original rental agreement was altered. She did not care.) I drove the van 513 miles and the rental was changed to a weekly charge at $295 with 750 miles included, thus there should be no added mileage or day charges. I received a damage sheet stating there were “deep scratches on driver side of van”. I see that she also added a charged of $30 for CDW (Collision Damage Waiver). After I left she claimed to have had the van detailed, called to tell me I sideswiped something and caused damage to the driver's side, which was going to cost me $150 more. Since the van was dirty when I got it, and I did NOT hit or scrape anything at all, how could she possibly assume that I was responsible? The van was very dirty on the driver side when I got it, more than the passenger side. How is it that she does not blame the prior driver, assuming there was only one prior, for the damage to this van? Is it possible that driver was responsible? Perhaps even someone else?

I drove back to their lot and took pictures of what she claimed I did. The marks supposedly "scratched" looked like they were from a brown grease pencil. The same type of marks, but lighter, were on the rear and passenger sides as well. She insisted that I was responsible because she had the van detailed before I got it. I told her the van was very dirty when she provided it. She said "Do you have a photo to prove that?" I said “No” and she went directly to her co-worker and told her to cancel the prior charge and add $150 for damages. She had a photo on her cell phone that she claimed was my van, which had been “detailed”. The photo displayed no date and when I asked about the photo not having a date she put her phone away. Fortunately, the gas station I topped off the gas at provided evidence of the dirty van. VERY IMPORTANT is the fact that the roads were DRY on Dec 21, so I did not cause the road spray on the van. I have photos and video evidence that the van I was given had not been detailed.

Due to Christmas time off, I was unable to see the gas station manager until Dec 28, 2020. He found the clip of me getting gas in the van as I had the gas receipt so he could find me at the pump. He watched it with me. He agreed the van was dirty on the passenger side. He had to leave so I was unable to get shots of the driver’s side, which I claim was dirtier than the passenger side. The lady also refused to provide the prior rental TIME IN for the van that she provided me with. She would not provide the report showing when the detailing was done either. When I returned from taking my photos I told them not to process the damage portion until the damage issue is settled, at which time the co-worker YELLED at me that I was threatening them and to get out of the building. I left and called the Lakewood police, who said that what I described was a civil matter and that they could not be of assistance on that. I then left. I will never return to that location for a rental vehicle again. I feel that I have been essentially slandered by the lady claiming that they did a detailing and wanted me to pay for “damage” that was minor and would likely rub off. The metal of the van was not even dented/scratched where she claimed that I sideswiped something. The damage looks like a brown grease pencil and is also on 2 other sides of the van, in different amounts, but mostly lighter. Originally the lady said my damage was on the driver side. Why is there a $30 CDW fee and an extra day added without my knowledge if the van shows to be a week rental? Thanks to a nice gas station manager I do have videos and still photos for the day I received the U-Haul rental and dirt is clearly visible on the passenger side, making the “just detailed” claim to be an outright lie. Let me be perfectly clear – I did NOT cause any damage to the van, let alone on 3 sides of the van. The van was driven on a highway and then sat outside on the driveway of my destination. I also have a photo on my phone. Even that old camera shows the road spray dirt.

I want a written apology from the lady and her co-worker as well as a reduction in my bill. The bill has been altered from 3 day to a week($19.95 x 3 days, not $19.95 x 2 plus $79), a CDW was added ($30), and I have falsely been accused of damaging the van ($150) that shows no damage to the metal. The co-worker obviously does not know the difference between a threat and a statement of fact.

I feel like I have been set up by the lady telling me that she was going to rent me a van that had recently been returned, but was NOT “Detailed” on the outside. Has the definition of “Detailed” drastically been changed to include “road spray”? If the lady eventually provides a photo showing the van was detailed BEFORE I returned it I would like a copy so a friend can analyze it. He will be able to determine if any changes to the photo have occurred.

Take photos of your rental vehicle before you leave the lot. Unfortunately, U-Haul does not provide a means to attach a photo, but a judge might be interested in your photos to prove a point, such as the lady in my case lying about the van being detailed when she provided it to me.

U-Haul International defective trailer

On February-- I rented a 6x8 enclosed trailer from the Uhaul dealer at 594Bearses Way in Hyannis Massachusetts. My purpose for the rental was to pick up some seat cushions in New York for my antique car. When I picked up the trailer, the person at the counter could not complete the reservation because the computer was down. They had to rewrite the contract by hand. I agreed to the insurance when they asked if I wanted it. At no time during the transaction was any explanation given to me about proper operation of the trailer, or any safety precautions that I should know. I was not told that a lock should be used to keep the door closed and there are no stickers or other information on the trailer suggesting this either.

At some point on my return from New York, the trailer door opened and my cargo fell out onto the highway. I was not aware that this had happened until further down the road when the state police stopped me to inform me that something had fallen out of the trailer and caused an accident. When I went to the rear of the trailer, the door was open and the cargo missing. The car that was following behind me was unable to avoid hitting the seat cushions when they fell out and damaged his vehicle when he ran over them. He had to have his vehicle towed because it couldn't be driven. The state police provided my information to the driver who contacted me the next day. He stated that what he ran over did extensive damage to the underside of his vehicle including the radiator, cooling system, transmission lines and bumper moldings.

When I returned the trailer the next morning and explained what had happened, the rental agent did not inspect the trailer but gave me the contact information for Western Republic. I called and opened claim #[protected] with them. I was told they would do an investigation and get back to me. It's very interesting that Uhaul and Western Republic are part of the same corporation. Isn't this a conflict of interest? They never called me back so I called them. I was told that there was no defect with the trailer so they were not accepting any liability for the accident and I would have to go through my insurance company to pay the damage claim. They also told me because they found no defect that they weren't responsible for the damage to my cargo either. I asked how they determined that there was no defect and was told that they looked at the rentals prior to and subsequent to my rental and found no complaints. Are you kidding me! This is how you investigate a defect? What was the insurance that I took out supposed to cover? They had no answer when I asked if the latch wasn't defective, how did the door open on its own. They made some half baked remark about something to do with the distance I drove. The lack of depth of the "investigation" flabbergasted me. This was not an accurate measure of liability or way of determining a defect. Quite possibly previous renters have not hit the same type of bump that I did. Were these previous rentals local and driven at slower speeds over in-town roads, or used on highways at higher speeds where bumps have a more exaggerated effect? They cannot say that looking at the prior and subsequent rentals is an accurate way of comparing like situations and determining if a defect exists. Being totally frustrated with their attitude, I requested a written explanation of their determination. Attached is Western Republic's response to my request for documentation on their decision to deny liability for the defective door latch.

Not happy with Western Republic's response, I called Uhaul's customer service. They put me on hold for ten minutes and then came back on the line and told me there was nothing they could do for me. I asked to speak with a supervisor and was told that he would tell me the same thing so there was no reason to connect me. I had to ask repeatedly for the name of a person in a management position in Uhaul that I could have review my situation. They finally gave me the name of Thomas Snell. I called him and explained what had happened. Mr. Snell initially said that Uhaul had already investigated the claim and didn't know what else he could do. After hearing all the facts, he decided to investigate further, but didn't say exactly what that investigation would entail. I have not had a reply back yet from Mr. Snell and he does not return my phone calls.

It should not become my liability for a situation that was out of my control due to a latch is definitely worn and defective with no mechanism to prevent it from popping open. I also believe that I should not have my perfect driving record tarnished and have to pay surcharges on my future insurance policies because of this defective latch. I have also lost my seat cushions which were in mint original condition and irreplaceable.

I sent all this information to Mr. Shoen, the CEO of Uhaul. Lets see what he has to say. No results from him and I'm off to court.
Please respond back to me that you have received this and also with your findings.

You state "a latch is definitely worn and defective with no mechanism to prevent it from popping open." Every U-haul trailer has holes on the latch to put a lock. The lock is your responsibility to provide. Some-U-haul sites even sell locks. With the light weight load you put in that 6 x 8 trailer it was probably bouncing all over the road and that unsecured latch opened. Regardless, it is your responsibility to make sure your trailer and its contents were secure. Same thing if you put the car seats on your roof racks and didn't tie them down.
