absolute worst moving company
I have moved numerous times over the years and I found American Van Lines to be the absolute worst moving company I have ever used or heard about.
The estimate we were given over the phone turned out to be 3, 000.00 off!
On June 5, 2012, we were promised that a truck would be there to pick up our household goods. Over two weeks later they finally show up. The excuse was always that they could not find a driver. The problem then was that they did not pick up all of our household goods. Maybe a month later the second part was to be picked up.
It is now August 8 and we are still waiting for the rest of our stuff. No one bothered to call and tell us that the truck had broken down and our stuff was now somewhere in a storage unit. As was always the case, they can't find a truck! This incompetence is atrocious! How does a moving company not have trucks?
This company should be forced to close down. I would agree to joining a class action law suit against this company for false representation, false promises, and breach of contract. Anyone else game?
moving
Took our deposit and set up a 2 day window for pick up. Never came! Every time my husband talked to someone they promised it would be the next day. Someone pretending to be one of the carriers actually called and said he was on his way with the truck on a saturday, but when we called him back he didnt pick up and upon calling the company, they stated that they hadn't sent anyone out! Supposed to leave on a wed, but by sunday my husband had to fly from maryland to ga to make alternate moving arrangements because we had to be out by the 1st! Horrible unprofessional company! worst experience ever!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I was given a Wednesday-Thursday pickup window, so I booked my flight to Kentucky for Friday at noon. I was called Wednesday and told they would be there the next day between 9am-11am. They called me Thursday at 930am saying they couldn't make it until the afternoon. I said that was fine as long as they came that day as I couldn't miss my flight. I call back at 4pm and ask where they were. They said they had to drop off the load they had packed up in the morning. So, I go book a hotel room as I had packed everything and broke down my bed. An hour later, they call and say the air brakes went out and they would be there at 7am. They showed up at 845 and I had to leave at 915 to get to the airport. My brother had to come watch them for me. I also had to sign a contract saying if I was late for the drop off, they would charge me $75.00 an hour. They were 24 late for me. I called to complain and all I got was sorry. They cost me $130.00 for a hotel room I wouldnt have needed if they would have told me ahead of time. I will never use this company again.
Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it!
Search for FMCSA on the net and file a complaint. AVL will be fined for moving violations, with the fines being most likely MUCH more than you paid to them! Sweeet! Although you will not receive any monies, you may feel some gratification.
Also report AVL to the BBB in AZ.
Although rarely lawyers can do anything, a consumer lawyer MIGHT be able to get your money back for you.
This guy would use AVL again?! What a pitiful, laughable, pathetic fool!
CONSUMER, BEWARE! Obviously AVL reads all AVL complaint sites; and when the HORRIBLE TRUTH about them is told, suddenly there are "customer" comments that glorify them!
Keep in mind: LEOPARDS DO NOT CHANGE THEIR SPOTS!

American Van Lines
Well, I spoke to American Van Lines today. They have decided to reimburse me for my hotel room, which is the only thing that cost me by the movers being late. I am very satisfied with their decision and will consider using them again in the future.
By the way, my items arrived in a timely manner. I was given a two week window, and they came a week after my pick up.
oh looks like they are switching up their lies from bad weather to the truck breaking down, have you even received your things yet? we were told they would come get our stuff on Sat Feb 11th then that turned into Sunday morning, then afternoon, they didnt show up till late Sunday night. We were told we would receive our things within 4 - 5 days and that the worst case scenario would be Feb 28th. Well its now March 7th and we still dont have our things. They keep giving us excuses like the weather is bad but I am not a dumb ### I checked the weather for where the truck is supposedly at and the weather is great! We were told last week that the truck had left New York, well when I spoke with the agents this Monday they said that the truck was still in New York due to bad weather, which I checked and the weather is fine. So the truck has been stuck in New York for like 5 days now? They also wont give us any info on who the driver is and what truck company has our items, which they are in violation with the FMCSA, THEY ARE REQUIRED to let us know that information. We should have found this site and checked with the BBB before hiring these guys, and we wont be surprised if some of our things are stolen since thats a complaint that most people have with AVL.

trying to make us pay more than contracted stated due to weight
We hired american van lines relocation division (Avlrd) to move us from nebraska to georgia. We went through a complete inventory list to assure we would have a smooth transition. We were quoted a not to exceed cost price for the move. We were advised to overestimate everything so we could expect to pay less at delivery (As we paid only a deposit until final drop off). We answered every question honestly and accurately and were told the price could only go down not up as long as we adhered to the inventory list previously quoted. As was the case. First, we were contacted 2 days prior to actual delivery wanting to pick our items up due to the fact they were already in omaha, we agreed; even though this made a lot more work for us. Second, two movers show up in a penske truck the next morning. Nothing showing avlrd; my husband requested that I call avlrd and make sure this was legitimate. Avlrd assured me that in fact it was; they were just contractors they hired outside of avlrd. Immediately, my husband and I are concerned about them fitting our items in this size of moving truck. Somehow they did manage to fit everything inside the truck; how it arrives in georgia is another matter entirely. Third, as the movers are loading the truck the mover in charge repeatedly said we were going to be over in weight. Again, I called and spoke with avlrd and rose assured me that he was just speculating and that we would have to wait until they weighed in and had proper paperwork. When the movers weighed in they text me a picture of the weigh paper showing we were in fact 2, 523 pounds over in weight. Again, I called avlrd and was told until we have all paperwork we cannot confirm your weight. I explained again that we did not estimate this weight; that we could only tell avlrd what we owned and what would be included on the truck it was their job to properly estimate all weight. I reminded them that this was a not to exceed cost price contract which avlrd explained that this is only true if we don't go over in weight. This was never disclosed to us. We did understand that if we added items to the inventory list we could expect to pay more; which we did not do. We strongly feel that they made the error on their side and we should not be penalized for such an error. This is a costly error; one that is not in our budget. We agreed to pay a total of $5, 083.67 for this move. We had less expensive quotes but we went with amvlrd believing they were the best company to work with. Sadly, this is turning out not to be the case.
I agree American van lines relocation division delivers nothing but lies.( It's what they are best at, not moving furniture). DO NOT USE THEM! or their subcontractors Relo movers, Mega movers, Unique movers. (Or any other company run buy Aldo Disorbo or his family.
Google Aldo Disorbo and you will see what kind of business he runs!

bad service
American Van Lines is a completely unreliable and unprofessional company! I moved with them from North Carolina to Georgia (pretty short distance). First of all they never got there on time, they will call in the middle of the night to say that the truck was on the side of the road or they were stock in traffic. Or they will simply not answer our calls. When they finally arrived they brought all of our new furniture completely destryed. All of our boxed were opened and objects were falling out. Every glass that we had was broken. We bough very nice wooden furniture less than 10 month ago and everything was destroyed. Our entertainment center was taken appart and buid back up incorrectly so the shelved would not fit. All of our tables were scratched and pretty much destroyed, our dryer is not working at all. All of the plastic tubs that we used to pack our stuff were broken and pretty much destroyed. Our mattresses were dirty and stripped open, without covers. A log bed that we build ourselves was broken and you know it has to be hard to brake a log bed. Even a very nice cutting board was delivered sawed in half! Now, why would anybody saw in half a cutting board. Every day we find other things that came destroyed. Our brand new grill, full of dents, the cover stripped open. And as if that's not enough, they did not delivered everything, they kept our bedside tables, a big new christmas tree in a box, a big mirror... countless things were just never delivered. When we called to complain they said that they couldn't do anything about it, that the driver said he didn't have our stuff, when in our paperwork he signed our inventory and all that was in there. I do not recommend this company, it was a nightmare! Beware!

Thank you for choosing American Van Lines Relocation Division as your moving coordinator for your relocation. We regret to hear of your displeasure with your moving experience. We believe our customers deserve optimal service at all times that is why we strive to ensure movers are successful, however at times we fall short of this goal. We notice that you have submitted a claim for processing and contact has been established between you and our office in reference to your losses and we definitely appreciate the opportunity to work in rectifying your issues.
American Van Lines Relocation Division apologizes for an losses and inconveniences caused throughout your moving process. It was always in our intention to provide you with exceptional services and a smooth transition to your new location. Please fee free to contact our office at [protected] if you have an further questions in regards to your claim or this response.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
American Van Lines Relocation Division.
You can trust that AVL and their hired movers will NEVER compensate you for anywhere near the dollar amount of your losses.
If you decide to submit a loss form, BE CAREFUL! For only a few dollars compensation, you might be forfeiting your right to sue AVL.
Due to the value / amount of your items that are practically a total loss, you are one of the very few AVL customers that a lawyer will have interest in pursuing your case to sue AVL.
The contract specifies that lawsuits are to be held in Broward Cty. FL.
Hiring a lawyer in Broward Cty. would be cheaper than paying for your local lawyer's accommodation expenses.
IMPORTANT: please do your homework! Turn every stone to make sure that many laws are on your side.
Find FMCSA on the internet and file a complaint. Unfortunately you will not receive any money for your disastrous situation that they caused, but at least American Van Lines will be fined for every moving violation.
failure to move on contracted dates
We signed a contract on 6 Feb for a move on 30 & 31st of May. At 3:00 pm on the 30th of May they called and said they didn't have a truck. We were obliged to cancell the contract because we had to be out of the house by the 31st of May. Phone calls were rarely returned, and our $2000 deposit has not be refunded as yet. One reason we cancelled is the fear that our furniture would disappear into never-never land and, due to their record of not returning phone calls, we would not know where or when the furniture would be delivered.
Find FMSCA on the internet and file a complaint. AVL will be fined for every illegal offese that was conected with your move, therefore lose money!
No, it's definitely in FACT:
We here at AVL just want your money. We don't care what happens to you after we get it. Now let us alone, sucker!
Our contract is drafted with that in mind.
ps: Now we have to apologize to let everyone else know that we "honestly" cared about your move and to make us look good for the next suckers!
The nature of the moving industry is one that is vulnerable to delay occurrences. Our contracts are drafted with this in mind as stated in the Terms & Conditions included in the documentation your received during your booking process. We make every effort in performing our customers' moves within the estimated moving dates as contracted and try to accommodate our customers despite circumstances that occur beyond our control but unfortunately at times our efforts prove futile. If we are unable to render services at the end of the contracted date, our customers can either accept an offer to be picked up at a later date which we ensure is convenient for them or they have the right to a full refund of their deposit if they decide to dismiss our services. Due to our incapability to render services within a mutually reasonable time frame, your account reflects that your order was canceled at your request of service dismissal and a full refund of your deposit will be issued. We ask you allow 7-10 business days from the date your order was canceled for this process to be completed.
American Van Lines of California will like to apologize for the unsuccessful efforts in providing services for your relocation and the inconveniences it may have caused. We value your shared feedback and it will definitely assist in our current efforts of improvement to our company entirely. unreliable movers
Beware of American Van Lines. We hired them to move us from West Virginia to Florida. All contact with the sales agent was via email and phone. The sales agent had us email her a list of items to be moved which became the basis for her estimate.
There was no physical inspection of pick up location and items to be moved. There was no communication whatsoever from the sales agent or anyone from American Van Lines to advise us of status. Movers did not show up on first schedule dates. Then they postponed our pick up date to 2 days later. No show for this either. We cancelled move order. The day after we cancelled, a customer service guy called trying to schedule yet another date for the move. By this time, we've had it with them and wanted to have nothing to do with American Van Lines. The salesperson, whom we thought was our primary contact till move was completed suddenly became unavailable to answer phone calls and emails.
Do not pick a mover who gives you an estimate and arranges the move without visiting the actual pick up location and the items to be moved. It is a "bait and switch". They give you an absurdly low estimate to get you to sign up, then probably jack up the price based on actual situation.
American Van Lines should keep customers informed of the status of the move schedule rather than just not showing up on scheduled dates. Should be one primary contact assigned to maintain contact with the customer. So frustrating to realize that the very super pleasant salesperson you dealt with to arrange the move, suddenly is out of reach when the move schedule goes haywire.
We ended up with Allied Van Lines who did what we expected of how a mover should operate.

AVLs apologies clearly tell just how incompetent they are.
If AVL were that great, there would be no need for their REPETITIVE apologies that are loaded with stupid comments!

liars
I was getting ready to move from Birmingham, Alabama to Seattle, Washington and to avoid driving that far I looked into having my car transported. I called American Van Lines and they gave me a quote of $1350 with a deposit of $450. I told them that I would call back since I was still pricing other companies and they called me three times a day for four days. Finally, since they were the cheapest company and they obviously wanted my business, I put down the deposit on May 7th and reserved May 18th-May 20th for pickup and my car was to be delivered to Washington 6-12 days after pickup.
Everything was fine, everyone was really nice and everything seemed to be running smoothly. On the 18th I recieved a phone call saying that everything was still on schedule for the 20th and I recieved another call the next day stating the same thing. I waited at home all day on the 20th and no one ever came.
Since the 20th was on a Sunday, I couldn't reach anyone because the office was closed. When I called them today (Monday) the lady told me that (1) she had no clue why they didn't pick my car up (2) she had no clue when they'd be there to pick my car up (3) it didn't matter if I had booked my plane tickets already, I still had to be there when they finally did pick the car up (4) she couldn't connect me to a dispatcher (5) no supervisors were available. So, the "long distance customer service rep" could tell me absolutely nothing and she'd have to have a supervisor call me back. Apparently they're really busy lying to other people.
So, I planned my tickets around when they'd pick up my car and no one knew when they'd be there, I wasn't allowed to speak to a supervisor and when I tried to cancel they wouldn't let me speak with anyone immediately. I had to wait around for someone to call me back. When that finally happened, she was really rude and informed me that my money would be back in my bank within 12 buisiness days. She also informed me that she couldn't send me anything stating that for sure. So, if in 12 days my money isn't back in my account, I will be taking legal action. They're very rude, very unprofessional and apparently they can't help you with anything at all after they take your initial deposit.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I keep getting told lies after lies about where my belongings are and when I will receive them. These are the most incompetent people I have ever delt with. Once they get your deposit they no longer care about you or your things. I'm filing claims with the Atty Gen. office as well this is not acceptable. I've been sleeping on the floor for 2 weeks. My job starts next week and I have no clothes not to mention I have no pots to cook with. Extremely pissed off! Don't trust these people. I should've listened to the reviews I previously read. Never Again! Move from hell
We have located and reviewed your account and we noticed that unfortunately we were not able to execute your relocation. We do appreciate your business and we regret that we were unable to render services within your requested moving dates and hear of your displeasure in the interaction between you and our company.
Given the nature of the business, the moving industry is vulnerable to last minute changes which sometimes obscures how we function as a company. Unforeseen circumstances are liable to occur causing delays in pick up/ delivery. We make every attempt in performing our customers' moves within the moving dates as contracted and try to accommodate our customers despite the possible delays that may occur, unfortunately at times our efforts prove futile. If we are unable to render services at the ending of the contracted dates, our customers can either accept an offer to be picked up at a later date which we ensure is convenient for them or they have the right to full refund of their deposit if they dismiss our services. Our records confirm that you, unfortunately was unable to allow us any additional time, therefore you dismissed our services. Also, it indicates that a full refund was issued.
We most certainly value your business and our office apologizes for the unsuccessful efforts in providing services for your recent relocation and the inconveniences it may have caused. We will keep a record of your posting as we value your shared feedback and it will definitely assist in our current efforts of improvement to our company entirely. The ONLY TRUTHS connected to AVL are the NEGATIVE REVIEWS!
There's only ONE MORAL that can be connected to AVL, and that is...
...the MORAL of these TRUE stories is DO NOT USE AVL.
The End.
lies about pick up
Pushy to get the business but checked reviews (good and bad) and paid my deposit and got dates with a 4 day pick up window. Before booking I was assured that the pick up would be ok, even though it was in a very remote area of northern CA on the windy, narrow PCH. Flew to CA from FL just after Christmas, packed the household belongings (mom had passed away) and waited over New Year's. Called and got ok answers - not coming 1st day, 2nd day, probably 3rd or last day of window. Then answers stopped, full voice mail boxes, no return calls. 3rd day of window told truck broken down, but coming next day. By end of 3rd day told pick up was being cancelled. Panic set in as the house was being closed on and we were still there! My husband and I both called the company, spending hours on hold, being re-routed, put into voice mail jail. Finally got driver's name and # and worked with him - he was a God-send! Although he was not broken down, and not where we were told, he agreed to meet another moving company 2 hours south of our location if we could get our stuff there (he was approx. 8 hours sourth of that when we set this up). Hired a local mover last minute (another God-send!), who got our items and met the American Van Lines drivers about 19 hours later. The local driver also told us the large Am. Van Lines truck legally could not use the roads to the original pick up site. The 2 drivers finally made this happen! It cost us an extra $1900. Our items finally arrived (we had no rush for delivery), only 2 small broken items even though they had been to Timbuktu and back. The same driver called to say when he would deliver to our house in FL and showed up when he said he would. No resolution, apology or even an acknowledgement that the company screwed up, lied, decieved or had any fault in our experience. The company doesn't even seem to see that there was a problem. When I sent back the written 'How'd we do?" paperwork, I got a call offering a $100 credit for our troubles. I was so angry I told them to keep it and to call my husband, who was calmer. They have never spoken despite several attempts on my husband's part. We will NEVER use this company again and advise others not to. I don't know if any company is better than another long distance mover, but the local company we used was a jewel. They know how to run a company and provided excellent customer service, especially last minute during a very stressful time.

The AVL sales reps. are so saavy, so cunning, and so very prepared to answer any customer questions.
EXAMPLE: When asked why there are such BAD REVIEWS on so many websites about AVL, my sales rep. quickly told me they are reviews from other competitive companies...adding: "We all do that to each other."
Having said that, then it is logical to believe that at least some POSITIVE REVIEWS (if not all) are submitted by AVL.
I find it hard to believe that AVL would conduct the extremes of praise-worthy business and shoddy / shady business intermittently.
liars - did not respect contract
Do not use this company! American van lines promised to pick up my stuff in a 2 day window and promised they would over multiple calls. They never called and said they would not make it, they just didn't show up. 2 days later they called me and asked if they could come 4 days from then. They had no explanation. My lease had expired on my old apartment and I had to stay in a motel and then arrange to get a truck and move myself instead. Talking to them on the phone was awful. No one would take accountability and they would continuously transfer you and place you on hold. Again, do not use american van lines if you actually want your stuff moved.

AVL IS NOT A MOVING COMPANY.
AVL IS A BROKER SERVICE...that takes your money and does nothing for you after they get your money.
(remember the "low" quote? That money goes to the brokers / AVL)
But in all fairness, the brokers do hire a moving company for you; however, all of these NIGHTMARES TESTIFY to the companies they hire.
We regret to hear of your reported dissatisfaction with the level of service provided by our American Van Lines team. We would like the opportunity to address your issues and concerns but, unfortunately, with the information provided on this review we are unable to find any records of such a move with our company. worst moving company ever!
We contracted with this company to move our household items from Dayton, Ohio to Tampa, Florida on Friday, March 9th. In the original estimate my husband told the estimator, Joseph Amato we were closer to 10, 000lbs, but were told by that in order to keep our deposit low we should go with 7, 000 lbs and if we went over the weight it wasn't a problem and that we would pay the difference. Well, truck shows up (a day later than what was promised to us & no notification was given to us of the date change until the NIGHT before they showed up) & there is not enough room on the truck for all of our items. The movers also did not show up with the items we contracted for (mattress covers) & only 2 men showed up for our 3, 500 sq ft home. We had to scramble the next day & rent a U-haul (more costs to us), get a storage unit (again more costs to us) and fill up my parents & sister's garages with our leftover items. Once the truck arrives at our home in Florida we discover that dozens of our items are badly damaged/broken or ruined. I called "customer service" and they told me to write a letter describing our problems. I did this & never received a call or email back. After numerous calls into AVL asking to speak to a supervisor the only compensation made was that they would waive the deposit for our next order? When I call back to discuss picking up our remaining items I am asked if I have anything in writing saying that they would waive the deposit. It took over a month of calling Joseph Amato, supervisors, customer service to even get a new written quote stating the deposit would be waived. We finally gave up & went with another company. They wanted to charge us all of the fees again as if it was a brand new order. One of their fees is something they call a 'binding estimate fee' which I have been told by Sam, Aramid, Joseph Amato & Matthew all different explanations of what this fee is- all of which are bogus. We still have yet to hear anything back on what the status is of our damaged items and receiving a claim check for those items. This move cost us double what it should have & the company no concern for our problems, resolving our issues or wanting our business. I would hate for anyone else to experience what we have with this company as it has been the most stressful, horrific, frustrating & costly experience. Please people, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! They seem very nice on the phone, but that is it. After they have your money forget about anything they promised you & expect headache after headache & if you even get your furniture at all- consider yourself lucky!

horrible customer service, delayed pickup and drop-off, damage
My experience with this company has been terrible. They do not return phone calls, especially the reps. They made up excuses for fees they couldn't explain, which changed constantly throughout conversations. Their moving company, infinity movers, never came when they were supposed to and american van lines did not care about the problems I had with either company.
My problems started when customer service could not tell me when my actual pick-up day would be. I had to call them multiple times to get a day and time which I was given the day before the supposed pick-up. Then they postponed my pick-up a day (1 day past the window). I had already moved, so I assigned a family member power of attorney. He had to call the movers to find out what time they were coming on the pick-up day, then they called later to say they would be late.
When the movers arrived, at first they did not recognize my brother-in-law as my power of attorney and then wanted $740 cash from him, which I was never told, so I hadn't provided him with the money. He had to take out money and pay the fee for me.
The movers wanted to box a floor lamp that my rep. As well as quality assurance specifically told me did not need to be boxed. The fee would have been $75 so my brother-in-law told them to leave it. They also put my suitcases in a box though I was never told they needed to be. Otherwise, I would have done it myself to avoid the fees.
The movers were supposed to drop off my boxes anywhere in the next 19 days. I had to pay extra to have my things transported to a van prior to delivery (Condo community rules). I called the movers for days trying to find out which day they would arrive and what my remaining cost would be. I tried calling my rep twice because customer service was not helping me. He never answered or called me back. (I haven't heard from him since before the pick-up.) each time I called customer service, they promised a call back the following day with this information, but they never called me. I found out the amount and delivery day the day before the estimated arrival (And the end of my drop-off window). Infinity movers was supposed to arrive between 3:00 and 6:00pm. The community where I live does not allow movers after 6pm. After 6:00pm I tried calling customer service and dispatch, but no one answered or returned my calls. The drivers called us at 7:00pm and said they would be there in one hour. We asked if they were driving a van and they said they weren't because no one had told them that that was necessary. They said they would get a van and come back the following day (On day 20).
When they arrived the following day they were very careless with my boxes. They tossed them on the floor, piling heavy boxes onto light ones and crushing them. I had labeled a few boxes, "fragile, this way up," and some of them were unpacked up-side-down. Multiple boxes were wet and two were destroyed. One soggy, wet broken box was shoved into a garbage bag with empty broken cleaning bottles in it. They broke a few of my plates and glasses. Some of my art work was damaged and my 50" plasma tv had multiple large cracks in the screen and no longer turned on. I paid $45 for them to box this tv (Which they wrapped in a blanket and taped) and then they broke it anyway. Again we left a message.
Customer service called the following day to find out if we received our delivery. I told them about the damage, they apologized and then quickly told me to just submit a claim, which they emailed to me. I complained that the movers boxed things that I was told didn't need to be boxed and tried to box others, so I was not able to bring all of my things in the end. Customer service told me they would find out why the luggage was boxed (I still haven't gotten a reason) but made excuses in regards to my lamp, none of which made sense. Eventually, I just gave up.
During the last five days, american van lines called me two more times to find out if my stuff was delivered. Each time I asked them why they kept asking me this. Each time they said they would update my information. The second time I asked if they could give me a breakdown of my packing fees (Everything that the movers had packed for me) because the actual price did not change from the estimated price though originally it was estimated that I would need many more boxes than I did (I had a friend go to my house and pack everything that I knew needed packed, other than my two tvs). The customer service agent tried to tell me that I was credited back all but $16 for the packaging fees and that that was reflected on my final bill. I told her that wasn't possible since my final bill was the same as my original quote and the weight hadn't changed. She said I didn't notice the price change because a destination fee was added and evened it out. I told her my destination did not change from my original quote and there was nothing about a destination fee or credit on my final paperwork. After a minute she went back to the same explanations so I asked her for a breakdown of all my charges. I am currently waiting for the invoice that I requested.

failed contract
I hired American Van Lines a month before I needed to move. I needed to move Friday March 23rd they wrote in their contract it would be the 23 or 24th. Today is the 26th and what they are telling me is that they are still trying to hire a truck. Every day that I sit here is costing me 100s of dollars. In addition to not having movers the company will not return my phone calls. I have left dozens of messages and several emails and still nothing. when I finally got a hold of someone in customer service they gave me a shrugged shoulder reply "we are just doing the best we can" How is this their best? When I asked for a refund they said I could talk to their cancellation department and start processing this request. I have never been so angry! I never in my life imagined a company could handle someones very stressful situation with such disregard. I think American Van Lines is PURE EVIL!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.

I am experiencing the exact same situation. They were scheduled to pick up 3/25-26 and as of this afternoon still no truck has been hired. I'm on board to file any formal complaints
I am still VERY ANGRY, and I am MORE than prepared to be part of a NATIONWIDE, CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST AVL!
If there is an assertive, intelligent attorney out there who is interested in making a powerful reputation for himself / herself, please make contact to us massive AVL victims ASAP!
still no items
we were told they would come get our stuff on Sat Feb 11th then that turned into Sunday morning, then afternoon, they didnt show up till late Sunday night. We were told last week that the truck had left New York, well when I spoke with the agents this Monday they said that the truck was still in New York due to bad weather which I checked and the weather is fine.
Find FMCSA on the internet and file a complaing. AVL will be fined for every illetal offense connected with your move, ie, lose money!
Have you received your items?
AVL is ### !
scam & no truck
American van lines is the worst company ever! I wish I would have done my research first and found this website which has nothing but complaints after complaints about this moving company! They even have a lot of complaints with the bbb about them! I was given a promise time of either fri or sat to come get our stuff then they gave me a time for 6pm saturday night then sat rolls around and they call and say they aren't coming till 8:00am sunday that was not our contract well guess what guys its now 10am sunday and they are nowhere to be found! I called michael olsen our agent yesterday and he said he would call me back, do you think he did? So I call customer service and the stupid rep says that the driver didn't want to be rude and come late on saturday but as i'm yelling at her she changes her story and says the drivers got caught up in bad weather there hasnt been any bad whether, they need to get their lies straight! We were told that the truck was here in colorado so I don't understand what the problem is, im sure that was another lie they probably don't even have a truck! They sure took my money and ran quick with it I hope I can do a charge back! The truck driver hasn't even given us a call to let us know where they are at!

broken promises/ scam!!!
Using American VanLines is the worst thing I have ever done. Broken promises after broken promises and lies after lies. They were quick to take my money and promise me that everything would be hassle-free, but it has been anything but hassle-free. My stuff was supposed to get picked up on Feb 10th, it is now Feb 12th and they have not called, and there is no sign of the driver. The "moving consultant", whatever that means, Michael Olsen is no where to be found and has not returned our phone calls in 2 days. I am in the process of now calling my credit card company to do a chargeback on my deposit. Hopefully I am not out of luck. Stressful thing is that my lease is up and I am getting charged by the day that I stay in here. Also, my new job starts in 5 days. I am going from Denver to South Florida. Please listen to me and DO NOT USE AMERICAN VAN LINES!
Ridiculous! We have yet to receive our items from American Van Lines. I hope all future potential customers read this and AVOID AMERICAN VAN LINES. They are the worst company ever. It is March 13th and we have yet to receive anything from these scam artist. All we get is lame excuse after lame excuse, and lie after lie about the reasons why they havent fulfilled their end of the contract. Our "contract", whatever that means, stated that they would have delivered our things by Feb 28th (which is way too long, but they said that they needed that amount of time just incase of "unforseen" events. ). These contracts that they have mean nothing unless it benefits them. They should be obligated to compensate the customer 100% on the back-end for GROSS contract breeches, but yet all they do is compensate us 30 dollars per day that they are late. AVL needs to comp the rest of our moves and square up with United Transport (who they hire to transport your goods. Thats right, its not even AVL. SUch a shady scam) themselves.
I encourage anyone who needs to move to GO ELSEWHERE, and do research on AVL or whoever you are considering. I failed to and now we are paying dearly for it. Beware, the owner of AVL also owns several other moving companies so be careful that you dont get the same crappy service, just under a different name. For those who have been unfortunate enough to deal with AVL, please contact the Attorney General's office of the State of Florida and raise a complaint. Something needs to be done. This company has pushed around people and acted like its NO BIG DEAL for long enough and will continue to do so until they begin to really feel the heat of the law, or out of business. What they are doing is NOT LEGAL. RESEARCH PEOPLE. Until people start taking action against this phony "company", we will continue to get these "templated", generic responses, like the one above saying they are sorry and to call their "customer service", which does nothing about expediting your goods. TAKE HEED PEOPLE.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.

fraud
This company is based out of Florida and makes on line estimates and over the phone estimates on moving costs. They are a total fraud. They gave me a quote. I live in NJ. When they showed up, they started demanding several hundred more dollars before they started. I told them that I would not use them. They became aggressive and I became worried. I had to tell them I was going to call the police before they would leave. It has been 2 years and the company is still hounding me. They have sent this to a credit agency and have been trying to ruin my credit. Read their fine print. There is alot of it. You cannot sue them outside of Florida. My suggestion, use a moving company that gives you a fixed price or someone who will come to your house and give you an estimate on the move.
Wost bunch of crooks I have ever met. They lie to you, hold your stuff hostage and then steal your stuff and what you do happen to ever see again will be broken or damage. DO NOT USE THSES CROOKS! They will never call you back and will leave you on hold for ever. Do your research first! This company is owned and operated by Aldo & Anthony Disorbo, both of them have criminal records. Check with the Department of Transportation, BBB, [redacted] and any other place you can find a review on this company. Whatever you do DONT HIRE THEM!

more than a month and they have not delivered my household items
I had used 'Nationwide Relocation Services' to move my household items from Texas to California. Turns out they used 'American Van Lines' to deliver the items. Its been more than a month that American Van Line has taken my household item from my previous residence. They promised to deliver within a week and now I have no news on where my stuff is. I am told each week that they will give me an ETA the following week. I have called them every day for the last week and I have not once been able to speak to the dispatcher, whom the customer care people keep forwarding me to. The customer care dont have any clue about where my stuff is and what is the status (dont know what they are there for). I keep getting transferred all over the place but never get to talk to anyone nowadays. I have gone ahead and bought some new furniture because I dont have any hope that these guys will ever bring my stuff back. There are no laws in this country to keep tabs on these unscrupulous people. I have a two year old daughter sleeping on the floor. I hope this never happens to anyone else and I hope anyone who reads this stays clear of these folks..
Yes, file a complaint with the FMCSA enforcement division. They only stop holding your goods hostage when you report them to the authorities. Until then, you stay caught up in their web of deceit.

total scam and fraud
I was extremely confident using this company when I hired them, however this turned into a terrible, terrible experience. I was moving from a one bedroom apartment in Dallas (less than 800sq ft) into a one bedroom apartment in Chicago. The customer service rep, Bobby Diaz, was extremely nice and reassuring, however once the actual move happened, it turned into a nightmare. The movers came to my apartment at 9 PM to pack my things (I am a single female); they left at 3:30am. When the movers took the truck to the truck stop and my belongings were originally weighed, they came in at 4, 600 lbs (and I had to pay them based on this weight), but after I requested a reweigh the truck came in at 3, 400 lbs. I had to hire a lawyer just to have them give me back a portion of my money, and I’m still not being made whole. They refuse to provide me with an itemized estimate; I am supposed to TRUST a company that was trying to charge me for an additional 1, 200 lbs, however pursuing further legal action would cost me thousands of dollars more. The only good thing is I have no damage claims to make on my entire move.
What is even more sad is that the movers told me that one of the other loads on my truck was a guy who lived in the apartment building next to mine. Coincidentally, I knew this guy. His one bedroom apartment was also weighed exactly 4, 600 lbs, when put on the CAT scale. Interesting, right? The details are as follows, but the above is the general idea.
• My original contract with the company was for $2, 135.11, and included 9 boxes for all of my glass and televisions. The movers only used 4 of these boxes.
• I calling the moving company on 10.26.11 and told them that I might need them to pack approximately 10 boxes for me when the movers got there on October 28th or 29th. The price went up to $2551.03, which included an increase of nearly $250 in the binding estimate fee. The original binding estimate fee was just over $500.
• The movers were supposed to arrive on either October 28th or October 29th. They called me at 1:30 on October 27th, and said that they would be to my apartment around 3 that afternoon to pick up my things. I told them I was still in Chicago, but would be landing in Dallas at 6:30, as they were not supposed to arrive until the following day. They asked if they could pick my things up that evening, and told me that they would be at my apartment around 7. They also asked if they could move me into my apartment in Chicago earlier than my contract, because if they made it to their next drop off location on Monday, October 31st they would get a bonus. I contacted my apartment, they said I could move in early, called the movers back and told them that this would be ok.
o The movers arrived at my apartment around 8:30pm on October 27th. I was able to finish packing my things with my own boxes and packing materials prior to their arrival. They arrived with paperwork in hand, and told me that the estimate would be going up; after they took a look at my apartment they said that I definitely had more than 4, 000 lbs, and they made me sign paperwork that charged me $0.70 per pound for every pound if I did not exactly meet my original contract estimate. Because it was nearly 9:45PM at this point, I had to sign the paperwork, or they would not be able to load my things. I felt I had no other options, and signed the paperwork.
• They were finished packing my apartment between 3:00 and 4:00 am
• I landed in Chicago on the afternoon of Friday, October 28th, after changing my flight to accommodate the mover’s request to bring my belongings early. This was a $140 extra fee incurred by me. There was a message requesting that I return the call, as they had the remaining balance. I called back and found out that my truck weighed 4, 689 lbs, and the balance due at delivery was $2, 500. After spending nearly 5 hours on the phone with the moving company, we were able to have some of the charges removed (what for, I’m not sure. It was originally boxes that I did not use, and the shuttle fees, however I’ve been told different things about which fees were removed and which remained), and my balance due upon delivery was $2, 072.20. My move was put into dispute at this point.
• The mover, Eddie, called me at 4:30pm on Saturday, October 29th, and told me that he forgot that his company did not process credit cards on Sundays. He asked if I was able to get him either cash or a money order. When I told him that it wasn’t possible, he said that he wouldn’t be able to move me in on Sunday, October 30th, as he had originally requested. He was instead going to go to Ohio where they had a money order and unload their things. He said he would be to my apartment on the morning of Monday October 31st. He also requested that I pay the $10.50 for the reweigh because he hadn’t been paid in two weeks, however after I spoke with American Van Lines they told him that he had to pay the charge to reweigh the truck. On Sunday he called and said that his customer in Ohio also didn’t have cash for him, and he would have to unload their things on Monday, October 31st, so he would deliver my things on Tuesday, November 1st.
• We met at Pilot Travel Center in Indiana, where he pulled his truck onto the CAT Scale with me present. We went into the Travel Center and got a weight of 24, 460. This weight was with all of my things in the truck.
• We then went to my apartment, where they were able to pull their truck into the freight unloading area of my apartment complex. We took pictures from my window, which show that I did not use their shuttle service. I had to provide them with my credit card information, and this was processed before they unloaded their truck, per their company policy.
• Eddie gave me the final Texas weight ticket at this point, which showed a weight of 24, 520 at the same CAT Scale in Anna, TX. The date and approximate time are blacked out on this document as well.
• They unloaded my belongings, and I have no damage claims to make.
• We returned to the Pilot Travel Center in Indiana, where Eddie pulled his truck on the scale and I witnessed the reweigh. We went into the Pilot Travel Center, and received the final reweigh ticket. The weight was 21, 060. I left the Pilot Travel Center after this.
• Eddie called me and asked to find me, as he forgot to have me sign the Credit Card Authorization form, on which I had him note that the weight had been reduced.
• He told me at this time that he would be fined if he did not submit the paperwork within 48 hours
• I contacted American Van Lines 4 times within the week of my belongings being delivered to my apartment to find out the status of my refund; they told me the refund would be processed within 7-10 days of my delivery
o I requested they send me an itemized invoice of my charges. They sent me an email from Chantal, however it was not what I requested. I needed to see what I was being charged for, such as the shuttle, boxes, binding estimate fees, etc. Marcus told me they no longer provide these to customers, however he said he was trying to work with his manager to get this for me.
o On November 10th, Marcus told my mom (who has been helping me mange this process due to my work schedule) that the paperwork still had not been submitted to them by the driver. He told her that we could fax the weight documents to him, but he does not have email. He also told my mom that they took off the shuttle fees, however on the documents that Chantal sent over these charges are still on the bill.
• Bobby Diaz was my original contact. His number is 800.338.9361 x 739. He created the original contract and the revised contract. He told me that they were not a broker service, and they used their own trucks. He told me that anything that I did not use would be taken off of my contract and I would not have to pay for them.
• I spoke to Matthew Magro the week of my move to confirm what was on my order. His number is 800.338.9361 x 727. His counterpart, John, also tried contacting me about this. His number is 800.338.9361 x 737
• Marcus was my main point of contact for the disputes over the weight. His number is 800.338.9361 x 154. His fax number is 954.772.4061. He does not have an email, and therefore I have not sent him the updated weight slips.
• We have talked to many many other people at American Van Lines to try and get this resolved. It was not until I got a lawyer involved that they even started the process to return my money. I was only able to get just over $700 back, despite not using many of their services, and documents that show they charged me for services I did not use. They say they cannot provide an itemized invoice showing what I was charged for, however it took my lawyer multiple phone calls to the company and the threat of legal action just to get them to return her phone call.

Dear Laura,
Thank you for choosing American Van Lines as service provider for your recent move. We have reviewed your posting and we regret to hear of the events that occurred resulting in an unpleasant moving experience. It was always in our intention to provide you with the most exceptional service ensuring a smooth transition to your new surroundings as we understand how stressful relocation can prove to be. We are definitely seeking to provide clarification where necessary and hope to address to any issues or concerns you may have.
Upon scrutiny of your account, we were able to confirm your request for a reweigh was executed and the new weight slips have been submitted to our office. Your balance was revised and a refund was issued for the difference. Generally, when our customers request an invoice reflecting the breakdown of their charges, our office provides a letter known as a balance letter reflecting the deposit that was paid to our office and a breakdown of the final charges which are based on if any additional services were rendered at the time of pick up and the actual weight of the shipment. If this proves to be insufficient, a more detailed breakdown can be found on the deposit slip received at the time of booking, and the bill of lading received at the time of delivery.
In providing clarification of any misunderstandings and to also discuss any other issues or concerns, a member from our management team will be contact in attempt to further address. American Van Lines wishes to extend our apologies for the inconveniences and the frustrations caused. We are making genuine attempts to rectify your situation as we are always working diligently to ensure that all of our customers are satisfied with our services. You are more than welcome to contact us in regards to this response at [protected]. Our Team is at your disposal.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Customer Relations Manager.
AVL is a notorious, unlawful scam operation. However, despite EVERY type of respective legal agencies, deptartments, organizations, authorities, and govt. offices knowing about AVL, NOBODY --repeat-- NOBODY will do anything to stop AVL or even investigate!
That speaks volumes about our lame legal system, our worthless govt., the worthless "professionals" involved, and the worthless employees!
You really need to file a complaint with the FMCSA at http://www.protectyourmove.gov Be specific on all of the charges and the reweights. Also contact the State AG of both states. This is a common practive for them. What company hauled your items since they brokered it out.
lies
I contacted American Van Lines for an estimate of a small shipment from Orlando to Denver. I spoke to a "Michael", that I now believe to be a generic name for anyone answering the phones.Probably the phone numbers for many different companies all go to the same office and "Michae"l answers. When I asked a number of questions, "Michael" assured me that he was not a broker and that the truck which would move my belongings would say "American Van Lines" on it. He also quoted me a price just under what it would cost me to rent a U-Haul and pay for the gas. He informed me that his company billed by cubic measurement rather than pounds. "Michael" told me that he liked to educate the public about movers who added extra pounds after the truck was loaded up and charged more money. His company was reputable. I sent him the exact measurements of each box and of each piece of furniture. The quote remained the same, and I would avoid having to find friends to pack up the truck and the long drive acrosscountry for a slightly less amount of money. Naive me! On moving day a white van showed uo with no permanent identity, just a small removable magnetic label on the cab door. After inspecting what I had to move, I was told that it would cost me another $1200. Here's the game on moving day: you have everything packed, you've sold your house (my renters were moving in that weekend) or your lease is up, you have no dishes to eat off of, no bed to sleep in, your utilites will be turned off the next day, your refrigerator is empty, and you must report to the first day of work for your new job in the immediate future. The movers know all this. It is called "the elenenth hour screw." I refused to pay. I then spoke to the rudest businessman in the world. His name was Gill Daniels from Colonial moving company in Orlando. Over the phone he slowly enunciated each word as though talking to an eight year old as he asked me "DO YOU HAVE A PENCIL AND PAPER?" He was going to give me a math lesson on how to figure cubic feet. When I told him to speak to "Michael, " he said "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?" After a heated exchange, I ended up paying an additional $600 rather than $1200. I would lose a $200 deposit plus have a $400 cancellation fee charged if I cancelled Funny how that math works, isn't it? I don't know how Gill Daniels keeps his job. I next had to worry about the moving company holding my belongings on delivery day untill I paid the extra $600 dollars. I had read horror stories about that and decided that once the moving van backed up to my door, I would block it with my car and call the cops if they gave me any trouble. Luckily that didn't happen. They were, however, two weeks late on the delivery and I had to place many nasty telephone calls to "Michael." He was always conveniently in a meeting for the first few calls until I threatened a class action law suit based on the written complaints I had read of their moving company. All of a sudden they decided to answer my calls and be specific about when my belongings would arrive. The men who delivered the shipment were Armenian. They were polite and did not charge me any more money. I tipped them and thought to myself how sad it is that immigrants are more polite and more honest than the native born Americans that I had been arguing with. Maybe it's just in the moving industry.Hope this info helps you in your move.
I filed a complaint with the FMCSA, with my fed reps., and with many, many more authorities. I filed, emailed, and called and called and called.
No one did anything!
I am sure AVL is very happy knowing no one will touch them.
But more potential customers will be much happier knowing to AVOID AVL!
Well you fell for the classic scam perpetuated upon many. YOu need to file a complaint with the FMCSA at protectyourmove.gov and also write your federal representatives. They need to make sur ehte fed does their job.
failure
I would not recommend American Van Lines for anyones future moves. I orriginally spoke to Don Otis who gave me a quote on a move based on a random number. The quote was around $2700 which was far less than other companies, and around the cost I could do the move myself. It interested me because I was very limited on time. Once the weight estimate sheet was done the quote was changed to around $3500, which was still within my budget, but higher than I could do myself. However, as long as it was done within my window I was ok with the price and Don assured me it would be. I gave a $1500 deposit and the day of the move, NO MOVERS? I could not get anyone from scheduling to return my calls and barely got Don to return them. I spoke to customer service once after 20 calls, and was passed directly to the scheduling voice mail which again noone answered. Around 4pm I was finally called to inform me they would be rescheduling my move for later, at a time I would not be available. I had to fly a person to the location at a cost of $500 just to be there the first time. A cost that was not reembursed. They did give back my deposit, and I did the move myself. Cost? $2000. Save the headache and do it yourself.

Sorry! the company name was America Vanlines, 11221 DOLFIELD BLVD #106
Owings Mills, MD 21117
I had a bitter experience with this company as well. They were so nice to get my pick arranged as soon as possible and priced low initially. The pick up driver came 2 hours before hand and started creating urgency and therefore we had to make him participate in the packing for which he made money ($250+). He made his own list of bags and packages in his own nomanclature which he did not explain to me. SINCE HE MADE THE LIST WHILE PACKING AND MADE ME SIGN AFTER LOADING I COULD NOT COUNT THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ITEMS AND SIGNED ON FAITH. I DID GAVE HIM TIP AS WELL CUZ HE WRAPPED UP THINGS IN GOOD TIME. 2 of my bags were missing when delivered and they said they never accounted for them. One of the bag was a regular 23 KG passenger luggage bag and had all my Mother's clothes and my warm suites and some other expensive clothings with a total price value of over $1200. They also did not deliver my Vacume cleaner as it was never accounted for in the total count. THEY NAMED BOXES AS BOXES IRRESPECTIVE OF WHATS IN THEM AND EVENTUALLY MADE ME SIGN AND FOOLED ME. MY MOTHER WAS SO VERY HURT ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE CAME HERE AS A TOURIST AND CARRIED BACK SUCH AN SHOCKING EXPERIENCE. tHE EVENTUAL PRICE WAS INFLATED BY ANOTHER $500 WHEN GOOD WERE AGREED TO BE DELIVERED DUE TO SOME WEIGHT ISSUES WHICH THEY ANYWAYS CONFUSE YOU WITH INITIALLY. THE INSURANCE PROGRAM WAS SO PATHETIC THAT IT WOULD NOT HELP MUCH. WHEN i KEPT FIGHTING AND SAID I WILL FILE COMPLAIN IN POLICE THEY ASKED ME TO APPROACH SOME CLAIM AGENCY AND THEY OFFERED ME $40 WITH NO PAPERWORK. THE LADY ON PHONE INFACT EVEN THREATENED ME IF I GO AGAINST THESE POLICIES AND SAID I WILL BE IN TROUBLE IF I WENT AHEAD LEGALLY WITH THIS CASE. I CHALLENGED THE OVERALL PROCESS OF LOADING AND DOCUMENTATION BT SHE SAID ITS ALL MY FAULT. PEOPLE LIKE US THOESE WHO HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES ON THEIR SHOULDERS WILL ALWAYS BE IN TROUBLE DUE TO THESE MALPRACTICES. THERE IS NO CONTROL AND REGULATIONS / HARING FOR SUCH COMPANIES CUZ WHAT AM CHALLENGING IS THE LOADING AND DOCUMENTATION PROCESS WHICH GIVES THEM A WAY TO CHEAT. THE WORST PART WAS THAT IT HAD MY MOMS CLOTHES. PLEASE SUGGEST IF THERE IS A WAY TO BRING THIS FORWARD AS AM ALL CHARGED TO TALK ABOUT THIS SINCE NOW MY FAMILY IS BACK IN HOME COUNTRY AND I HAVE TIME AND EBERGY TO FOCUS ON THIS. LOOKING FORWARD TO ADVICES. I HAVE ALL THE DOCUMENTS AND MAILS IN PLACE TO SUPPORT THE ARGUMENT.
Search the net for FMCSA and file a complaint. AVL will be fined for violations, most likely MUCH more money than you paid to them. Sweeet! Although you will not receive any monies, you might feel some gratification.
Report AVL to the BBB in AZ. Be aware that AVL will continue to fabricate.
If your items are in storage and the moving company* is demanding more money, well, that seems like you NEED to report them to the BIG time investigators!
ATTENTION CONSUMERS: American Van Lines is NOT a moving company. AVL is a "moving service" that is conducted by BROKERS! Unaware customers pay thousands of dollars to the brokers, who take customers' money and leave them stranded!
A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT IS THE ONLY WAY TO DEAL WITH AMERICAN VAN LINES.
