excessive nsf/overdrawn fees
Since I first open my accouunt at the compass bank on 09/2010, compass has continued to charge my account with excessive overdraft and other fees. This has not been the first time. By the time my payroll hits the bank for some reason the bank has charged my account with fees that only they know about. I had to call the bank twice to wave those charges in which the did but this become tiresome! On 01/02/11 was the last straw with that dame bank. I needed gas money to get back home from the new years holiday in which i live out of town, as I went to draw money from my savings account all my money was gone except for 7.34. I was mad! What happen to my money from my saving account! I had some into my checking accounting. Why would they take all my money from my savings. I went to call the bank but they were closed due to the holiday. This is ridiculous! Come Monday- I want my money back because they have no reason for taking it! I will be closing the account.

fake bank overdrafts
I would never suggest anyone do business with Compass. The managers are trained to avoid you. The Branch Manager in Jacksonville had to ask his boss permission to put me through to his voice mail. If you do not believe me, call your Compass Branch location and ask to speak with the Branch Manager...Good Luck !
They are under investigation for violating federal anti-trust laws because they tried to force customers to use Rapport Software. Anyone see that ad when you tried to log on the web site? If you did, you should moniter this because you may get a large check one day ! I closed my account in August, 2010 and now I get a collection service letter saying I am $224 withdrawn? They can't even tell me what it is for ! I am suing Compass Bank BBVA, but I can only sue the local branches, because this bank is headquarted out of the USA. They are not regulated by the State of Florida or any other State. They are fraudulent and do not care for their customers.

absolutely agree. Compass bank's service is nothing short of criminal. My wife closed an she originally opened with her dad years ago. She closed the account last year and withdrew the remaining funds. Some transactions she made before she closed the account posted after she closed the account and withdrew money. Here we are a year later and we've heard NOTHING from them until they froze my father-in-law's bank account demanding we pay 500 dollars. Every single tool that is suppossed to protect debtors was not available to us. It's like they had a gun to our family's head. I work in forclosure for a mortgage servicer and these guys make us look SAINTLY. Also, every single rep I spoke with at Compass did not know the very, very basic aspects of their job( fair debt collection practices act). Compass bank are killers. k-k-k-k-killers!

we are under the same situation me and my dad are trying to pay bills online but for some reason it wont let us and it says to call to the number and their office is closed and he fears he might have to pay a late fee my dad already has enough debt to stress about this is ridiculous
auto loan misinformation
We are trying to buy a car from a private owner which is financed through Compass Bank. The bank has now told the owner multiple different stories on how the loan must be paid off, including that they will not accept payment from my son's credit union and will only allow the current owner to pay off the loan (like a credit union will release the lien without confirmation of collateral!). They then told the credit union that once any payment is received, they won't release the title for 4-6 weeks. How can one possibly buy a car and then not be able to title it for 6 weeks? Either their customer service is completely incompetent or their practices border on insanity. This is the worst runaround I have experienced in 40 years of dealing with financial institutions. They are not even attempting to service their customer who is trying to sell the car and pay off the lien.

nsf fees
I with anyone who thinks Conmpass bank is a ripoff, I just got charde 240 dollars when i deposited 3000 dollars yesterday and they said i overdrafted 6 debit card transactions. Any one going to sue i would like to get in on it.
I was a customer of Compass Bank when it was Texas State Bank and never had any complaints. The employees of the bank were always helpful and understanding. I don't know what happened to those employees and their attitudes when the bank switched over. They are now rude and not very sympathetic.
My complaint is with their shady practices involving NSF fees.
I had $32 dollars in the bank on Sunday and knew I had to watch what I was spending. So when I decided to get the kids something to eat, I knew I couldn't spend very much. We spent about $13, so that left about $19 On Monday, there was a $10.00 service fee taken out, which left $9 in the bank. So Tuesday morning, after much talk and thought with my husband I decided to withdraw $220 to pay some bills that needed to get paid. I understood that I would be charged a $38 fee. On Friday of the same week my paycheck got direct deposited, and I needed to check the balance and found that the bank had charged me a fee for the debit I made on Sunday when I had money in the account to cover it. My husband called the 1-800 number and was told that the debit made on Sunday was taken out of the account the next business day, which would be Monday. That would have been fine because I had the $32 dollars in the bank on Monday. But what the bank did was post the debit made on Sunday, which was actually posted on Monday, on Tuesday afternoon. That means that they took out the $220 that I debited, then took out the $13 that was posted the day before, resulting in two $38 fees. If it sounds confusing, that's because it is. The representative on the phone could not explain how the the service charge posted on Monday, did not bounce, but the debit made on Sunday did... three days after it was made. Now we are waiting for another representative to decide if we should get one of the NSF fees returned. So I guess we'll cross our fingers and hope someone actually calls us back.
Compass Bank is a joke - We had 6 accounts. They charge there debits before credits so your co called free checking is not free. You can have your payroll be credit Tuesday morning if you withdraw money from there bank on that day they will charge you nsf fees. Had over 7 such fees refunded from there customer service line only to have one of my accounts shut down by local assitant manager Amy Whitehouse [protected]. Explained the NSF fees were do to there error - She did not care. Went in to close 5 of the 6 accounts to until they could release the 6th. Still they care less. Complain to Regional Manager Chuck Sprague [protected] no reponse - no response - no response - Sucky bank. We have two buisness's in the Ocala area both we have refuse to take any one check or debit card issued from compass. If you have an account with them close it it will be the best thing you ever did!
My account went into overdraft do to me paying my AT&T bill, which was my fault. However, when it was not cleared up in 10 days they began charging $7/day from the day it went into overdraft. No diclosure or notice was given until the fees reached $241.00. The employees was less than helpful. If you have a similar problem send a complaint to the Federal Reserve Bank (their regulator) at http://www.federalreserveconsumerhelp.gov/
IF you had been watching your account like you should have...this would not have cost you near as much.
I think the fees they charge are absolutely beyond crazy...but...ya gotta take responsibility for what YOU'RE responsible for. It still sucks I know.
I can tell you what is wrong with the employees. Its just as bad to work for Compass Bank as it is to bank there. They are probably just showing up to collect a paycheck until they can find another job. Most employees spend their day getting chewed out by customers so you were just another one in a long line! Been there done that!
This very scenario has happened to my wife and I more times than I care to remember. A few times, we were able to get some of the fees back, and other times they "stuck to their guns" and wouldn't refund us anything.
While their practices MAY be legal, they are completely illogical, not following the normal flow of cash that normal people think about when trying to manage their account.
I'm seriously shopping for another bank right now.
excessive inactivity fee
Unbelievable fees. I had used this account to manage my travel expenses for work related travel. Being unemployed, the account was inactive. They said I was informed that a fee would be imposed but I never saw one. They charged $39 inactivity fee. Bad, but it gets worse. I thought that at least the fee would be considered an 'activity'. It wasn't. They charge another $39 the next month. I went in to discuss but they did not seem to care on way or another so I closed the account. I will soon be reemployed and need another account and you can rest assured I will not be using Compass.
system keeps going down
THIS BANK IS A JOKE! 2 TIMES ALREADY THIS MONTH THEIR ONLINE BANKING SYSTEM HAS GONE
DOWN. TELEPHONE BANKING ALSO WAS DOWN TODAY.. SOUND'S LIKE TO ME THAT THEY ARE BROKE
AND NEED SOME FREE MONEY IN THE FORM OF NSF FEES. IF I HAVE NO WAY TO TRANFER FUNDS BETWEEN MY ACCOUNTS THEY MIGHT AS WELL TIE MY HANDS, AND TAKE ALL OF MY MONEY.. I WILL BE CLOSING MY ACCOUNT! BEWARE!

lost $10,000 of my money
This happened several years ago but it still steams me to this day! I agreed to transferr $10, 000 from an IRA to an Annuity in December 2004 at the Crestline Branch. I completed all the paper work and the branch manager, Grant Lauderdale, gave me a copy of the paperwork and told me I'd get confirmation in the mail from the annuity company... Well, I'm not a rich man, but I trusted Compass with this money... and I sort of forgot about it... I never did get a statement and a couple of years went by and I thought "I'd better check on this money"... so I went back to the Crestline Branch in late 2007 (3 years.. I know!) - the Lauderdale guy was long gone.. so I spoke with the branch manager and told them I wanted to confirm the annuity was in force... they looked and looked and told me they had no record of the transaction and gave me a number to call in their brokerage dept... I called and they looked and looked and said sorry... no record or an annuity OR you old IRA... "sorry, sir - you'll have to prove to us that we processed this transaction"... I felt like a fool! I could not remember where that carbon copy was... so I dug through old boxes of stuff (thank God I keep everything) and finally found it. So I took it back to Crestline and they said... we'll look into it... I heard nothing from them for over a week so i called again and they acted like they knew nothing about it... and another guy told me "we have no idea where this money is"... Well it turns out that Grant Lauderdale never submitted the annuity paperwork and he left the bank shortly thereafter... and the money was finally traced to a "unknown" account. TO THINK... if I had not kept that piece of carbon copy paper I would have been out over $10, 000... Anyway, what made me so mad was that the bank offered me no apology... Forest Suber in brokerage acted like I was just bothering him... I will never do business with them again... they lose your money and then act like it was my fault. THERE...I got it off my chest! Oh, and I continue to get a bank account statement showing I have 9 cents in the account - and I closed the account in 2003 and have asked then numerous times to just keep the 9 cents and stop mailing me a statement every month... but I keep getting it.

online outage 5 days already
BBVA Compass have their online access down since Friday 1/15/10 supposedly for some upgrade. The message said it will be up by Monday 1/18/10. I tried Monday 1/18/10 to no avail. I tried again on Tuesday 1/19/10, still to no avail. I called the local branch, no explanations. There are federal laws that prohibit banks from closing 4 consecutive calendar days. I don't think it applies to online access. However, Compass seems to be abusing the lack of regulation on this. I am contemplating on closing down my account. Have to take care of outstanding checks written and then ADIOS. I don't have to be a victim of banks that think they're TOO BIG TO FAIL. If this is how they do business in Spain, it's not what I expect here.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Ok, honestly? Online banking is NOT the only way to determine your balance! How about...keeping a register? Thats what normal people do. If you go overdrawn, its not the banks fault; its yours! Also, there is 24/7 automated phone banking as well as customer service, and you can always go into the bank or use the ATM to get your balance. This is why people irrate me. Use your brain. Don't spend money you don't have, and don't blame your bad bookeeping on the bank.
Yeah, they really need to issue some kind of official appology when this is resolved. If one of my higher profile customer's website's went down for 4 days, there would be hell to pay for sure.
Just think of all the NSF fees this "outage" will help them generate.
hidden fees
I have had numerous problems with BBVA Compass and today the nail was placed in the coffin. I have had a small savings account (x-mas account) for about a year and a half. I noticed that on 12/31/09, I had 2 service charges ($3 & $12), I placed a called and was told that they have changed their policy in October with savings and you are now required to have $500 minimum balance. Keep in mind the charges didn't hit my account until December. I said "excuse me" when I opened up the account I signed a contract and I was never notified of this change. I never keep much in this account b/c it just for left over x-mas gifts. If I was notified I would have immediately closed the account before October. Or if I would have received the charges in October I would have flagged the issue then and saved $ on the other charges for Nov & Dec. I said “I would like a credit of these charges and I would like to close my account. I was told they "can't" give me a credit b/c they added a sentence about it on the August statement *at the bottom about the change. Keep in mind I do all on-line banking and there was never a single notification. Not only did I not receive notification my account wasn’t deducted until December so I racked up more charges.
I am closing both of my account with them effective immediately! I have never had issues with a bank as much as this one. I am a firm believer they are not out for the customer just the bank!

atm machine ate my business debit card
To start Compass ATM machine ate my business debit card. I asked teller to look into it and she denied it. She flat out said there is no card in the ATM machine. The next day they called me and said they found a card because a customer turned it in from the ATM machine. I asked them to cancel it. Two weeks went by but I didn't get the new card. When I called them, they said they never cancelled it. I asked them again to cancel it. After a week I got (not one) personal (not business) debit cards in mail. I went to the bank and they told they made a mistake. Now I had three debit cards (one that I've been using) and two new ones. They cancelled two of the personal checking account cards and I kept one of the new cards. They told me I will get the new business debit card in a week. Finally my new business debit card arrived. A week later I started getting these over draft charges in mail from my business account. I called compass and they said they had screwed up my debit cards and that they have to look into it.. Now my personal debit card was taking money out of my business account and the balance had gone to negative and they were hitting me with $38 over draft fees every time I made a purchase with my personal debit card. No one ever called me back so after couple of days I went to the branch. This is almost a month ongoing now. I went to the bank and asked them to look into it. I got interrogated and felt like as if they are trying to blame it on me. Finally they said they will look into it and will call me back. Three days went by and they finally called me back and said they had voided all the overdraft fees so I didn’t have to pay it. But now my balance was negative because I couldn’t transfer any money to my business account due to the whole mess they put me in. She demanded that I come to the bank right away to put money back in that account or they would not cover me if there is any charges coming in against that account. I was at work and I couldn’t make it to the bank that day. Next day I went to the bank and she has the audacity to tell me that since she called me the day before, there has been to charges on that account from my automatic withdraw accounts and now I have to pay over draft fees no matter what. They made me wait over a month to fix this mess but now they punish me for behind a day late. DO NOT open an account with Compass Bank. Half of my fiends have left that bank due to similar reasons.

freezing account
I had a business checking account with compass in 2008 and they overcharged my account numerous times with overdraft fees and I was not over drawn. When I went in and tried to pay them anyway just to get my business account in the clear they refused to open the account. I had a savings account with them and had continued to use the savings and in oct 2009 I went to open another checking account and let them know what had happened with the previous account and they opened my checking account and said it was fine. When I went to deposit some money a couple of weeks later I WAS TOLD THE ACCOUNT HAD BEEN FROZEN BECAUSE I OWED THEM MONEY. THEY KEPT MY DEPOSIT MADE TO OPEN ACCOUNT AND HAVE RUINED MY AVON BUSINESS. COMPASS BANK IS THE WORST.

stay away
Applied a new checking account 1wk ago from BBVA Compass bank. Called three times to be able to set up online login. Initial deposit was withdrew from another bank on Nov. 23. Money is gone from another account but didn't show up in this new Compass checking account. I'm transferred to 2 reps and both of them didn't give any useful info and told me they don't where is the money go. Customer service is extremely slow.
The Compass Online Banking is worst one I've used. It's not fully automatic online banking. You have to call in to setup everything. The application form is also delayed.

excessive nsf charges
I have been charged NSF fees on a few occasions for reasons that make absolutely no sense. I have now opted out of the "overdraft privileges" that the bank extended to its customers earlier this year. It was a new scheme for them to make more money.
The first incident was a double charge that was no fault of mine. I had a pending charge (authorization on my cc for a bill) which was holding up funds. Then, when the charge actually went through, the authorization was still on hold. This double charge took my account negative and I was charged a fee when I did nothing wrong.
The second incident was on payday - of course. This new overdraft privilege allows you to use your card, whether there is money there or not. I get paid on Thursdays (well, it goes to my bank on Thursdays, but of course doesn't post till midnight.) I used my debit card on payday (since the pending money was reflected in my available balance.) The next day I never saw anything negative because my paycheck had went in and I assumed it all went in at the same time. A few days later, I saw a $125 NSF fee - and no charges that went through that day! I called the bank and even though online it shows the charges going through on Friday - they were pending on Thursday (along with a hefty paycheck that way more than covered them) so that took my account negative - even though it never went negative because all of the charges went in at the same time as the deposit.
I've since opted out of the overdraft privileges. I'd rather get my card declined because they decide to make money off my paycheck for a day than suffer fees because of it!

piece of crap
Eeded to purchase a plant. Greenouse did ot take VISA. Sent me to BBVA/Compass. Entered my information. ATM said, "do you really only want $0.01? Tried to change it. Again and again. ATM repeated. I went into Bank. They said, "sorry ATM ate your card." You are up S__t creek. A Thousand miles from home. No gas, no food, ATM ate Card, and they say, "ATM is not ours. Someone else services it." They would not give me name or phone number. In effect, it was "Eat s__t. We're too big to mess with you!"
Really made my trip to the southwest a piece of crap!

holding deposits and transacting debits to generate nsf fees
I made the mistake of opening a checking account with Compass Bank 6 months ago. It generally takes them 24 hours to process an automatic deposit. Deposit goes into the bank electronically at midnight, shows as pending and if you use your debit card the next day they will process the debit before they post the deposit IF the debit creates a negative balance so they can charge you an NSF fee.
I had 300 in my account. Used my debit card four times on Tuesday and had the funds to cover the debits, wrote a check on Thursday and had an automatic deposit made on Thursday night. They held the deposit until Saturday. Processed all four of the debit and the check on Friday BEFORE processing the deposit and then charged me four NSF fees in the amount of $38.00.
I will be closing the account. Their customer service is poor and they obviously don't care they have a low customer base.

Dealing with the same issues. I am in the process of fighting 8 NSF fees and going to switch banks. I can't afford to bank with them. How crazy is that?!?!?!?!
nsf fees
I deposited $1000 CASH at 12 noon. My bank told me the fees were available immediately. I went and used my card three times later that day. A week later I check my account and find they charged me three $38 NSF fees for those charges. Even though my statement shows the deposit that day. Then three days later, with still plenty of funds in the bank, they charged me another 4 $38 NSF fees. I asked them why I got the first three, and they said the charges took place the same day, but the deposit hadn't been recorded till after. Bull. They submit the deposit immediately and you get a computer printed deposit receipt back. Then for the four additional charges three days later, they explained, using terms I have never heard in my college educated life, that the first three fees three days prior caused the charges when additional charges went through after my deposit. Didn't make any sense, but they still didn't refund them. I deposited $1000, had five charges after I deposited it totaling $60 over three days and paid $266 dollars in NSF Fees. Nice way to stick it to your customer.

I opened a checking account with Guaranty Bank through a promotion where I would get $100 after 150 days, with terms and rules. I followed all the rules they had posted on the promotion page but now that BBVA Compass has taken over, they refuse to pay me the $100. I had planned to close my other account and move all my money there, but I sure won't now. I will not do busines with thieves. I will stick to credit unions because I have never had problems with them stealing my money.
Excessive nsf fee
I made the mistake of not maintaining my checkbook register for a week. In that week I charged $366 using my VISA debit card. I do not dispute those charges, but I have a real hard time with the $805 dollars in NSF fees they charged me. When I discovered my mistake I immediately drove to the bank and sat down with a bank rep to see what can be done, if I...

I overdrew my checking account last week, and was out of town on business. There was not a BBVA Compass branch in any of the cities I was in. I called customer service to explain the situation. They told me a customer care specialist would have to contact me within 48 hours. It was nearly a week before someone returned my call. I racked up almost 500.00 in overdraft fees, causing 3 checks to be returned. I also had an unauthorized debit that I was charged to NSF fees for. When I called on Friday and told them it was not authorized, they told me they could not dispute a pending transaction. Of course not, the were waiting to charge me another NSF fee on Monday. When I was traveling I also checked my account online, at one point it showed the checks that were returned were paid. Not pending, PAID. They were playing a "shell game" with my checking account. This is very deceptive.
nsf fees, account holds, deceipt
Compass charges overdraft charges on hold amounts authorized through your ACH card. If you go buy gas and they "hold"$100 on your account and the charge is $31.00; if the $100 "hold" overdarafts your account they will charge you $38 for each transaction. This in itself is a bit shady, but that is not the worst part: They report different information to the...

BBVA Compass prays on people who live pay check to pay check. I know, I used to work for them when they first came to this country and took over Compass. Thankfully, I was able to quit and move to a career that doesn't make me feel like a thief every day. And I can honestly tell you that the Management team struggled when Reg E came into play because they needed to find other ways to make up the lost fee income. They are manipulating your debits and credits in an attempt to find a way to charge you... largest debits first, followed by smallest credits... and when a debit comes in late from a slow retailer, they will back it up as far as they can to see if it can go in front of a deposit and cause a fee. And a check register won't really do the trick because you have no way of knowing how long they hold a deposit before making funds available. Only those people who have a large cushion to keep in the actual checking account in case there is a deposit hold should bank there. I strongly suggest that everyone else move over to a credit union until BBVA Compass gets the message.
From: Texas...I have has this same experience with compass as well and they suck. The difference with my story is I went out of town for my anniversary. I checked my balance daily to make sure I was staying within what I thought was budget. I had a positive balance but I knew I had to make a deposit on Monday to make sure all charges were covered. I made a $100 deposit on Monday when I returned from my vacation. On Tues morning I had 2 NSF fees/OD fees on my account totaling $76.00 ($38 each) for two items they say posted to the account on Monday but were not showing on my online banking. The deposit would've covered all charges that came through and I would've had money left over. Then I went to compass branch and they told me I had to call customer service 800 number. I contacted the customer service dept and discussed the issues with the account. Not to mention, I have a savings account with money in it as well with compass. Customer service told me I have to have at least $500 in the savings for them to cover charges in my checking account. They agreed to reimburse the OD fees but I checked my online banking again and 2 more OD fees came through so I had to call back and dispute those as well which resulted in them taking the OD fees before the items charges were paid which caused a dominoe effect. I called back again and spoke with a different rep and he informed me the policy concerning the $500 in the savings account in order to cover charges on checking went out in 2010 and we was given incorrect information. He advised we call back tomorrow and they will reimburse the fees but I just wander how much trouble I will have to go through to get that accomplished. I am unemployed with a fixed income and I can't afford any extra fees and problems with my money in the bank. I am parent as well and I amso frustrated and compass only adds to my problem. I will be closing my account as well.
