My elderly grandmother lives in a house that we own in Michigan. The bills are in her name because they wouldn't let me put my name on them while she was living in the house because I live in California--whatever. We did what they told us to do, which was put the bills in her name, but we would pay them online -- no problem. I noticed recently that her bill went from an average of $250 per month to $1, 200.00 -- a pretty significant increase! So, I called their customer service to get things figured out. After a lengthy discussion about why I was calling and not my mother (who is deaf), they finally began to discuss the details of the bill with me, the HOME OWNER. During this time I was told that I was a liar and lying for mother so she didn't have to pay the bill. I couldn't believe the things being said to me! What I have learned is that for 3 whole months the bill was "magically" switched to someone else's name. Pretty strange because I was still receiving bills during this time as well. The person, we do not know or have never known. During those three months $1200 worth of charges were made. Then it was again "magically" returned to my mother's name. They believe my MOTHER did this to escape having to pay the bill for three months. Did I mention she's elderly and can't hear?! Which they also said was a scam. So, apparently, for no reason what-so-ever you can have your utilities switched to someone else's name without any proof of residency or lease. I need proof of residency just to get a library card, but a utility bill? No need! Then they can switch it back to the previous person's name without any contact? Apparently, they are so powerful that they just do what they want and make YOU pay for it. For 3 months we were being doubled bill, even though half the bill was in someone else's name. That makes sense right? UM, NO! My guess is that there has been a clerical error on their end, but instead of investigating it, they'd rather act tough and argue with you over the phone, while calling you names and accusing you of scamming and stealing. Way to go Consumer's, excellent customer service! I have refused to pay the bill. There is no way I'll pay for someone else's mistake or someone else's use -- no way. They gave me the name it was switched to and I intend to either find this person or figure out their mistake and them fix it. How can people take advantage of a poor, innocent, old woman who lives off of fixed income from disability and still sleep at night? I just can't believe the way that they treat people. I have never been more offended in my life!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
This seems like a huge problem with me as well. Recently my roomates moved out (about six months ago), soon after them moving out we were informed by Consumers energy that my roomates bill was being tacked on to our current heat bill which is in my wifes name. His bill is 1000$, they asked us for proof that he doesn't live here. So we sent them a copy of our current lease which does not have his name on it. They told us that the lease is not sufficient and said that we needed an older lease? Needless to say they have given me a shutoff notice and will be turning off my heat tomorrow unless I pay 900+dollars to stop the shut off notice. Is this even legal?

The State of Michigan needs to put a yellow tag on Consumers Energy thus notifying them they have ten days to pay and see how they feel, I was also faced with a similar issue a simple call to local tv and an attorney seems to offer some help always get the name of the person you speak with at Consumers and their ID number so you can file a complaint and have record of it.
My daughter had the same thing happen to her. A ex boyfriend had a consumers bill from a previous apartment in the amount of 3 thousand dollars and because he live at my daughters apartment. Consumers is saying she is now responsible for his bill,
They did similar to me. They put my dead aunts amount on me after I moved into the residence. Consumers energy gets away with an illegal monopoly and antitrust yet, other companies are sued by the government for much less and action is taken against those companies. Not the case with consumers energy.
