My name is Stephanie Popkowski and I live in Jacksonville, NC. I am writing this letter because I feel you should know about what goes on in your restaurants. Now I know there are thousands on Hooters restaurants around the country and it is hard to keep tabs on all of them but I feel it is my right and my duty as a woman to bring to your attention the actions of one of your employees.

On December 16, 2008 at 2pm my friend and I after not seeing each other for months decided to go to Hooters Morehead City, NC 28557 for lunch because we love the food and the environment. Well our mindset toward Hooters changed after today. I just graduated college and while my husband was deployed in Iraq I lost 40 pounds. I did this because of personal reasons as well as once I moved to North Carolina full time I had hoped to re-apply for a position at Hooters since I wasnt overweight anymore and that hindered myself from being hired the last time I applied. My friend whose name is Stephanie as well just had a baby after being honorably discharged from the Navy. She had both of her ovaries removed and was told she would never have children and found out about her pregnancy 37 weeks into it. So her baby was a miracle from God and she is a very proud mother of a baby boy. Now with both of us being familiar with the military we know that men military men love going to Hooters for dinner as well as wives love taking them there just before deployment because the restaurant makes them feel good about fighting for this country.

Now that you know our background here is what happened. We sat down and ordered two Hula Hoop Pina Coladas. The waitress checked our ids as appropriate and placed our drink order. Then came back and said it would be awhile because the computer system was down and she had to tell the bar tender herself. Now the restaurant was not busy and the bar was not crowded so the time to make our drinks was extensive. Then we proceeded to order our food which we ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Curly Fries, and a Hooters Burger. The waitress tried to suggest the mini burgers to me but I wanted the real Hooters Burger because that is what I was familiar with and called a real burger. Then when she finally brought our dinks I forgot to order and appetizer and ordered the cheese sticks. The cheese sticks came very quickly and raised suspicion to me because I have been in the food industry for over 10 years and know how long it takes to make frozen cheese sticks and it ranges from 7-8 minutes depending on the company. They were burnt and there in less then 5 minutes. She was very peppy like the cheerleader image you mention on your website but when she brought out our food she said Hungry Girls Today. Now I know from being a waitress for many companies you never make a comment like that. No matter whom the client is or how much food they order a comment like that is inappropriate. Also the waitress, Amanda, filled the Hooters image perfectly with her being at perfect weight and making the Hooters uniform proud. In other words she was very skinny and my friend and I are not twigs like she is. So we took extreme offense to her comment. She proceeded to walk away after making the comment. I sat for a minute with my friend and asked her if I just heard Amanda right and she said yes she heard the same thing. So we asked another waitress who came to check on us because Amanda was taking a lunch break if we could see the manager. There were two managers present that day and they both were doing interviews but one came over and said he was the manager. How appropriate to have a male manager address a comment a woman made about another woman. So we knew he was not going to fully understand the extent of the comment made but we proceeded to tell him what happened. He apologized for the comment and said he would take 20% off the bill, 10% for each meal but then continued to talk. He said to us that Hooters is mainly a man environment but we do encourage women to come to the restaurant. Right there he was in the wrong too because of what your webpage says.

Your mission statement on your website quotes:

Our mission is to provide a family of hospitality and services that achieves excellence and enhances lifestyles of all who come in contact with the Hooters brand.

We are committed to providing an environment of employee growth and development so that we can provide every guest a unique, entertaining dining experience in a fun and casual atmosphere delivered by attractive, vivacious Hooters Girls while making positive contributions to the communities in which we live.

As well as:

Hooters characterizes itself as a neighborhood place, not a typical family restaurant. Sixty-eight percent of customers are male, most between the ages of 25-54. Hooters does not market itself to families, but they do patronize the restaurants. Ten percent of the parties we serve have children in them. Hooters is in the hospitality business and provides the best possible service to anyone coming through the door. For this reason, the chain offers a children's menu.

Now I am an educated female having graduated college and taking classes of interpretation and your Morehead City restaurant does not follow either statement. First off this restaurant did not follow the mission of providing excellence or enhancing the lifestyle of all who come in contact with the Hooters brand because the waitresses comment put both of us down and made us feel horrible about ourselves. Also while Hooters make characterize itself as a neighborhood place I would never call someone in my neighborhood hungry for I do not know their financial situation or how much their family eats. For all your waitress knew in this economy today we saved up our money and wanted to treat ourselves to good food but instead were insulted. I know that the cliental is 68% male but that leaves 32% of the cliental to be either women or children and that is not the best possible service to provide to either woman of children by calling them hungry. The food also on the menu is not cheap nor does it really follow the value for the item because everything is ala cart. Everything is separate and charged an extensive price for so while 20% off may have seemed appropriate for the manager to take off the mean was still $34.83 after discount. Alcohol I understand to be priced the way it is but to charge extra for fries, blue cheese, and cheese on a burger alone is ridiculous. The comment Amanda made ruined our whole dining experience as well as our impression of Hooters.

I would expect a response in an appropriate time manner for I will be telling the many thousands of Marines in Camp LeJeune, NC to not eat there as well as their wives not to apply there because we were truly discriminated against for our weight and the fact we were women. I truly hope Hooters can resolve this issue for I feel that despite the ridicules the company has been through hiring attractive women as servers it would not discriminate against the sex it takes pride in hiring.

I am sorry but it seems to me that you are just upset because you cannot get a job at Hooters. Yes, maybe the comment was out of line, but so what...I am a waitress in Las Vegas and formerly worked at Hooters. Im sorry but if you don't fit their description of what they want in their restaurant they are not going to hire you, regardless of what company it is. I know other companies that are the same exact way. Anytime that you go to a "adult" atmosphere...you have to be prepared for what you were dealing with.

I worked for Hooters for almost four years and I will tell you, people say things everyday that they don't mean to be offensive. This girl probably didn't mean to offend you and didn't have any idea that you had lost a lot of weight. Give her a break, ya...she's probably really pretty, skinny, and bubbly...and she made a bad comment. I can GUARANTEE you that SHE hears much worse comments on a daily basis. Maybe you should step back and think of what those girls endure everday. It's not as glamourous working there as it seems. If comments like that offend you that easily, you could never make it working at Hooters so don't even bother applying.

Oh and FYI...the cheese sticks do take less than 3 minutes to cook. Our deep fryers are HUGE and that is the fastest cooking item along with the Turkey Sandwich.

I was a hooters girl at the Morehead City Hooters. I heard about this situation and that girl didn't mean her comment like that. Obviously you just took it the wrong way the sad part is because of your complaint, the girl was fired and a single mother of 2. Maybe if you weren't so self-concisous you wouldn't of taken offense to this. So maybe you should take you 2 dollar tipping self to mcdonalds next time.

I went in and ate at the local hooters around the corner from my house... I sat down and did not get greeted for almost an entire song! Than after looking like I had disturbed the WAITRESS, she took my order and never returned to the table! She just sat with another table of gentlemen and ignored us. Must be nice to do a crappy job and still get to keep it!

Years ago, I went to a Hooters with my (then) boyfriend. No surprise, our
waitress paid more attention to the table of all guys near us; even when she
took our orders, she spent more time talking to my guy than me. What she
failed to realize, is that I paid the bill and my guy only left her a $2 tip!
(One dollar for each of her hootahs). LOL don't be offended, be clever!

Listen, I am not a fan of hooters AT ALL! but this was totaly in your control. DONT GO TO HOOTERS. What the heck is the big deal about a place that sells burgers and fries on a plate by a waitress in short shorts? You went there to pick a fight and to prove a point...bottom line. It's like the other person said you are upset because they refuse to hire you. Big deal they wont hire you. this makes a much sense as NASA hireing a ###. The same thing applies here Hooters will not hire large girls the same reason you don't see "FAT" runway models...It's not fair it's just the way things are. Hooters did not create this rule "WE ALL DID" Including you. Hotters just plays on the idea that this is an OK thing because we and you make it ok. If it wasn't you would not have gone or tried to get a job there.
It sounds like your not sure about who you want to be. One you want a job where there are nothing but skinney girls there. You admit this in your opening that you lost a lot of wait. So you admit that you are not happy being FAT. Then you defend your FATNESS because of what the waitress said.
Bittom line is that you will not take anything anyone says to heart because the bottom line is you want someone to agree with everything you say infact you want this girl fired from her job! Because how can someone like that get a job there and you can't. All you really want is premission to be who you are. And frankly the only premission you need is your own. SO if you want to to be fat be fat if you want to eat a 7 course meal in one sitting eat it if you want to be skinny be skinny but make up your mind on who you want to be. and You were sounding just as bad as the skinny girl when you used the twig remark and about the guy manager so you too are just as prejudice as we skinny peopl...by the way I'm a guy too

omg lady...you wrote a lot in your comment about a "hooters girl" that said "boy you guys are hungry". You must have a lot of time on your hands. haha! hey my daughter got a job there this summer and yeah she is beautiful and got hired on the spot because of it but she relizes its really hard and she says to me that "this job isnt glamerous at all" haha again. But she is keeping her job because they put a lot of time in her training and the managers are really nice to her. Its a very respectful place and the male clientel cant get out of line because the managers would never put up with it. Oh and the girls awlays get walked out to their car with a manger to make sure they are okkay... Shame on everyone who has something negativce to say just because the girls are beautiful I guess its true when they say" dont hate me cus im beautiful" lol

your just a bit self concious. and if I were you I would eat elsewhere if I was going to be looking at skinny attractive girls while eating a big plate of burgers fries wings etc. Why would you even hurt your own self esteem like that? You brought it on yourself. I feel bad that, that girl got fired. she should have a little more respect but it wasn't that bad of a cmment. You need to go on a diet and really improve your self image of yourself cause iit is rediculous to spend this much time groping about what that girl said to you. If you were confident it would not have bothered you. I also interviewed in my home town for the job at hooters. I am 128 lbs. Not overweight. and have also been modeling since 14 yrs of age so I know Im not ugly. I did not get the job either but Im not making a mom of two lose her job over it. I know Im still beautiful. Getting a job does NOT determine my beauty. And another thing is I think you might be mad that your man enjoys hooters aswell.

on sat. 7-31-10 my husband and I went to the Hooters in Nashville on Largo dr. Always go there, even w/our son at least 3 or 4 times a yr mainly summer time. June and July we went & the airconditioner was broken. After being downtown that day for my bday we stopped there on the way home to KY, needless to say we could've ate whereever but chose there because we like it.. I will NEVER go back, sat there for almost 10min. w/out being asked what to drink, the lady at the door came up to us & asked has anyone waited on you. We were fixing to walk out when a waitress came to take our order, I looked around & didn't see one waitress the place was packed. I figured they were locking themselves in the freezer since it was so hot in there. The manager was no where in sight & even asked what his name was i believe it was Chris Johnson. Poor service, normally i tip very good i did tip but not what i would've if I had good service. The waitress all acted like they were pist off, & didn't want to be there. I watched 2 groups leave the table in front of me due to the service. Pathetic, glad this happened, i'm NOT gonna spend my hard earned $ on poor service and bad attitudes... KY!

I have worked at hooters for over three years and it starts to get really annoying when women like you come in looking for something to complain about. Im sorry that you didn't get hired to work there but who wants to look at an overweight Hooters Girl? They did you a favor because you wouldn't make any money anyway. Women who are self-concisous don't need to come to Hooters and ruin our day to. We dont just hire girls based on image but attitude and personality, which you def. don't have.

So the story is that the waitress made some insensitive comment and that made you angry? I'm sure she didn't mean any offense but yeah complain to the manager which makes sense and maybe he could talk to the girl and tell her to watch how she talks to people next time because some customers are more sensitive than others. Do you really think a girl would deliberately try to say something [censor]y if she was relying on your tips? After talking to the manager why do you feel to write such a long and useless post about this? And why the heck are you rambling about the details of your weight loss, blah blah blah, friend getting ovaries removed (why is this even relevant?) blah blah blah, and taking classes of interpretation blah blah frikken blah. No one cares about these useless and stupid details. You could have made a point here in 2 sentences but decided write more than 5 rambling paragraphs. You also discredit yourself when you blatantly discriminate against the manager for being male. 'How appropriate to have a male manager address a comment a woman made about another woman. So we knew he was not going to fully understand the extent of the comment' I'm sure a Hooters manager who is around women all day might understand more than you think. I'm sorry you found the comment offensive, insensitive, whatever, but you need to get over it and not find the whole brand accountable for this. I highly doubt your military guy friends will heed your request to not patronize this particular Hooters. In fact they are probably telling each other that you totally overreacted.

Ha! Location closed! Bad service, bad manager. Looks like our vets got the last laugh! You may be a bit too big for support hose & orange shorts but you sure as hell can carry camoflouge, a deadly weapon & sport bigger balls than the "majority clientele." I say this with admiration because I have been blessed with a sharp mind, the ability to validate & communicate with all social & educational statuses, a pretty face, solid, cut physique and a F cup that has the Hooters waitresses b lushing! I stand in awe of you though. Thanks for doing what you do so that simple idiots on here can insult you & shallow females can feel better about themselves. In my experience, I don't get mad, I get dirty looks in my car because male halfs are checking me out in front of their mates. I am just stuck in gridlock like them. I feel sorry for someone who reduces themselves to "book cover" status. My looks or my rack may get me in the door but my brains keep me there. You are my hero...no one cares what you look like negotiating landmines & you made it to Hooters so because of your efforts I am here writing this freely. In my book, she should be trotting her cute ### to the kitchen dumping your scraps with that mindset. Hooters does train servers and I am positive customer insults or recommendation of cheaper entrees are not inclusive of the mantra. I am pretty sure this was not so much a looks issue but more of a mind issue. The fact that you were so offended & offered validation of deeper issues states that. Either way, you won. You were smarter, you left her where she stood & she is jobless now. Just for kicks...how much did you tip her on that $34 check? My gut tells me you did right by her even in the face of insult.

Hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! You are entitled to your opinion as well as your preference for more "boyish" figures. BTW, had you had experience with girls & boobies you would know F is also a DDD cup. LOL. I am sure you can rally a bunch of guys on here that find big boobs, cut arms & a flat stomach a freak of nature. Don't even answer [censored]. If after my post that is all you picked out not only are you small minded, you must prefer "boyish" because they "inflate your uhhh ego." Have a nice day Tiny.

yy4u: Now I know why you said "grow up." From your Chamber of commerce website: Designated a Certified Retirement Community by the state of Texas, Harlingen boasts a low cost of living, year-round sports and is the health care heart of the Valley. Thousands of birders flock to Harlingen for year-round birding and the internationally known Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.

Does your sag inhibit bird watching, your overall health or your dream lifestyle as it pertains to your locale? One, from all evidence perused, can only determine that you are old, in poor health, broke & kinda comfy in the fact that you made it far enough to tell a Vet's wife, a vet & an educated YOUNG, MARRIED, PROFESSIONAL, GOODLOOKING female to 'grow up." Whassamatter? Your hubby take off with a chickadee & you reduced yourself to birdwatching & bashing the stronger versions of your sex? I love all these negative comments! I was stating fact & giving a "thanks" to our military. Thus the regular attacks... Go spot a vulture & justify your audacity to tell Stephanie to grow up. If I were to sink to your level I would call you a Texas Heifer. The reduction "trust me" reference already has me picturing udders. Some of us work out daily. Keep bloggin Tessie! Mooooooo! Opps! I went to Hooters on Friday, June 24th. The first time I went to Hooters it wasn't good food, so I thought I would try it one more time. I was not happy with the food. I got a buffalo chicken sandwich. I thought I would get cheese, lettuce and all that good stuff on it, and all I got a was a slab of chicken on a bun. Are you kidding me? And my pop was 3 flippin dollars! That is ridiculous, I am never going there again. I was not happy with how much money I had to pay for a ### meal. I really would like my money back, but I doubt that will happen. The chicken had no taste to it, and either did the wings. I don't think I should have to pay 30 dollars for a ### meal when I could have gotten an awesome burrito from chipotle for 7 dollars.

Okay I worked at hooters before in Manassas Virginia, I have to say that is the worst place to work. There are many reasons to support my opinion. The managers there don't give two ### about anyone but themselves, they are not organized at all, I started in may of last year and it took.a whole month for me to be put in the system and it took just ask long for me to get a name tag. Please do correct me if I'm wrong but they cut back the dishwashers hours and expected us to do them, I didn't mind at first but then I've come to realize that Im doing free labor. If someone WAS getting paid to do the dishes then why Arnt I getting paid? Well that didn't happen, another thing was I have complained to them about giving me more house cuz I have bills to pay. They didn't do anything about it and hired 4 new girls so I still wasn't getting enough hours. There are also alot of girls there who were pregnant, which is no big deal but they gave them.everyday they wanted to work. Its not fair just because Im not pregnant or have kids because I want a career. Overall it sucks working there, the food is terrible and I would not advise anyone to go to hooters.
