I received a Reader's Digest book a couple of months ago. I did not order it. A month later I received another book. Also unordered. My "account" has been cancelled, but they have sent me a bill for $30.28. I have the book, but I am not going to return it by paying the postage myself.

Reader's Digest / Trusted Media Brands select editions

I also received a condense book in the mail with a cheap toy. When I last Dec 09 I was told my account was deliquent so I just paid up. Now I received another of these condensed "select books" with an invoice for $30.56. I read all the complaints that I just found & going to call in the morning & cancel this. I never return the sweepstakes info since which I know is major rip off. It is sad because I do like reading the monthly magazine & if they continue to do this I will have no choice but to cancel my suscription.

The first Select Edition which I received was titled the Black Box.I did not enjoy reading the novels and it flatly failed to impressed me. In fact I literally stop reading and abandoned the book. And for the price of Singapore Dollars Fifty Six (S$56) it is overpriced. I was shocked when I received the second Select Edition titled the Rosie Project .

I expressed my strong dissatisfaction and told them that the novels are not appetising to me at all. I unwillingly paid for this because they kept sending me multiple overdue invoices with a clause stating that a collecting agency will confront me if I fail to pay! They did not have the decency to reply to my gross discontentment which I highlighted in my earlier correspondence. I did mentioned that I am a totally dissatisfied customer.

A third set was again sent to my letter box! This really sent me up the roof. I now expect further "Overdue Bill" invoices...

Firstly, the reason why I subscribed was because I thought it would be a good read. I was not clear that there would be subsequent volumes. I did ask for clarification about the frequency of this subscription but they were tight lipped. I receive no reply at all! I fell that this method of doing business is dishonest, unscrupulous and unprofessional.

I received the first book, and immediately sent a letter telling them not to send anymore, and that I would not pay for them if they did.
sure enough, a few weeks later, another one arrived, with two pieces of junk, but no paperwork of any kind either on the outside or inside of the box.
a week later, I got a bill for 30.71...which included a sweepstakes entry that I would be required to sign. I believe that if i signed the entry, I would also be signing that I agree to continue getting these unwanted books.
I also feel that I will be forced to cancel my magazine subscription and all future dealings with this company.
they scared my mother into paying for numerous books while she was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Now I'm old and they're trying to get money from me too. Seems to me that there has to be some consumer agency that should be looking into this practice.

Reader's Digest / Trusted Media Brands Unsolicited VPP & Recipt of unordered book on 15-02-2010

Sub:Regd.V.P.P. packet (for Rs 449 only)SRT Nagar
P.O.VPP, P-06641,
09-RDRE09-RD09000078516/1-1001

TO,
The CEO/MD/PRO/CS Manager,

I the customer of RD, am experiencing immense grief to bring it to your notice that i have been duped by RD .

The India Today group has my knowledge goes is renowned for over many years now.
Iam sure you realise that a foul word of mouth by its customer can leave a deep scar or a black mark on its reputation built over the years. This unfortunate morning [protected]) at 11:30 A.M. a packet has been delivered to my residence with the name Sub:Regd.V.P.P. packet (for Rs 449 only)SRT Nagar on it from RD.

I regret to say it was delivered to my residence in my absence. My family unaware of what it was asked the delivery man a sbout it.He in turn collected Rs.472 saying that "she is supposed to pay him to collect the VPP, for the order placed by me".(which obviously i haven't).

I would like to know from you why you want to dupe me in this way.I hereby bring it your attention that i have not placed any order as such for any printed book what so ever with you.So i will not tolerate any such inconvenience caused by you.Like i said i am reputed customer of RD who has enjoyed reading its past issues but hereafter i would regret the inconvenience caused by RD to me.Strangely i find no reason why i should subscribe to RD in future.
I have been deeply hurt by the inconvenience caused.Your kind jesture to return my hard earned money will do me a favour & gain my confidence in RD.
My wife has paid the delivery man Rs 472 under the impression that i have actually placed this order, on the basis of what the delivery man said. After the delivery man left, she has opened the package to see what was in it.Alas!, she found a printed book in it (which is of no worth to us) and which was unordered. Moreover on the innercover of the book it says, "NOT FOR SALE, A FREE COPY ISSUED TO RD CUSTOMERS" I regret to say I AM ONE.
So i hereby request you to make arrangements to take this unsolicited VPP (unordered book)back and pay back the amount of Rs472 to the address mentioned as below.

No site exists! If you are going place these contests for people to register, then you need to have a site to go to. We have been with Readers Digest for many years, and lately it has been more of a problem than it is worth. We may need to re-think our status with this company for magazines, books and entering contests. You need to make this fair for everyone and not a select few.

I don't want the small Reader's Digest and please stop sending me the bills for one. I read only the large type and it seems when you send the request for a Reader's Digest by mail it will get you every time. It is frustrating and confusing. Refrain from sending them again and remove me from the small Reader's Digest list. To say the least I am a bit disappointed with this company. I only get the large type. What do I do with the small type. Can I return them or throw them away? Sincerely Norma F. RDA0319293469/2#

i received a post card that said to go to readersdigest.com/myfreegifts-went to the site(it is really there but it was to get you to agree to join their book club. THEN you will get the three gifts. the post card does not say that anywhere AND it says 3 FREE(means no strings attached) waiting for you. I was very dissappionted in Readers digest for that. I just recently started getting their magazine again. This card was mis-leading-I guess I am not "special subscriber "afterall. When my subscription is up I will not renew because of this. A business like them should know FREE means free not if you sign up or try out or what ever. Free means free no strings attached.
sorry nothing free in this post card.

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH READERS DIGEST! THEY CONSTANTLY SEND OUT LETTERS SAYING YOU NEED TO RENEW. YOU GET A SUBSCRIPTION, AND THEY BUG AND HOUND YOU AFTER THE VERY FIRST MONTH. I HAVE NOW DECIDED TO AVOID THIS MAGAZINE AS THEY SEEM SHADY AND SEND OUT CARDS LIKE THE ONE I GOT THAT PROMISED FREE GIFTS- WHICH IS A SCAM. I HATE THEIR TACTICS OF TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO PAY FOR MORE SUBSCRIPTIONS! BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THESE PEOPLE. WHEN I WAS DONE WITH MINE THEY THREATENED TO SEND MY NAME TO A COLLECTION AGENCY BECAUSE I DID NOT RENEW MINE- I IGNORED THEM AS THERE WAS NO WAY THEY WERE GONNA BULLY ME!

Reader's Digest / Trusted Media Brands fraudulent sweepstakes

I am SOOOO grateful that I trusted my instincts and decided to check to see if this was a scam. Bless all of you out there that wanted to make sure that you were protecting other innocent, law abiding citizens who wanted to believe in a miracle that was a fraud!
I just recieved a Reader's Digest sweepstakes winner letter today [protected]) and my family is in a desperate financial situation and I wanted to believe so much that this could help us out...then I read all of the other complaints that have been posted and it probably saved my family from becoming even more destitute. There is NO WAY I could ever believe that Reader's Digest does not know about this scam! My check was actually sent from AIG Annuity Ins. Co. from Amarillo, TX ("A member of American International Group Inc.") but there is also another financial firms name on it; BNY Mellon Trust of Delaware of Newark, Delaware!
The letter, however, is from Reader's Digest. If someone had stolen their letterhead, they would have surely known by now what was happening--unless they are involved at a silent partner money laundering level. I will take this to the state legislature and beyond if I have to! I am tenacious.

I received my letter and check October 9, 2010. After researching and calling the number I knew it was a scam. If you look up the listed phone number it is a cell phone in British Columbia, Canada. I e-mailed AIG per a request on the internet, awaiting a response. I will also report this to the post office, attorney general of my state, and the BBB.

I recieved the same "certified claim" check in the mail from AIG Annuity Ins. Co. from Amarillo, TX ("A member of American International Group Inc.") but there is also another financial firms name on it; BNY Mellon Trust of Delaware of Newark, Delaware mine arrived yesterday 3/10/10 so this has been going on a while since the scam has been listed all over the internet. People I hope know better, thats why I checked out the companies first.

Mine did not come from Readers Digest, which I know would not be involved in a scam anyway. Mine came on AIG letter head, a poor copy I admit but the outer envelope (where the return address isn't even on the correct side of the envelope) is congratulations canada.

Your 3rd clue that its fake, is if you do call the number your not talking to Kevin or Allison or even Lewis out of Washington, your talking to a foriegner whos name is probably Abdula lol get a grip people, nothing is free not even guareenteed money with your name on it.

My name is Day. I work for Reader's Digest.

The letter and check you reference is not affiliated with our company and has no connection with our Sweepstakes. It is fraudulent. Please be aware that there are many “scam artists” out there who prey on unsuspecting individuals. Unfortunately, they are very tough to track down because many of them are international or close up shop and change their names to avoid being caught.

Please let me reassure you that Reader’s Digest has always - and will always - encourage and follow reputable practices that make our Sweepstakes honest and real, as well as exciting and fun for our customers. No purchase is ever required for entry. Reader’s Digest never charges an entry fee or a fee for winning. Our Sweepstakes is conducted in accordance with all applicable laws. A list of winners is printed annually, and is available by written request.

All our winners are selected through a series of random drawings by InfoUSA, an independent judging agency. Winners are notified by mail within thirty days after the drawing date. Our winners are never notified by telephone. After each Sweepstakes effort, we file a list of winners with the State of New York and verify that all prizes have been awarded.

We also work closely with law enforcement organizations to alert consumers to Sweepstakes scams, including publishing public service announcements and listing information about Sweepstakes on our website (www.rd.com). If you have any further questions, you can contact our Customer Service toll-free number at [protected].

Thanks!

What are you talking about? How do you propose Reader's Digest stop criminals from using letterhead that can easily be created on any computer in the world?
These are scammers. There is no contest. There never was a contest. Criminals are trying to get your money. They use stolen checks from business accounts, and create phony letters on their computers.

Reader's Digest / Trusted Media Brands Billing me for something I did not order

I received a PAST DUE BILL Dated September 1, 2009. The letter states that they sent me a bill for VOL 4-09 SILKS that I ordered which was shipped on 07/09 which I know for a fact I have no clue what this is. I do not order from RDigest. They say that the payment is due Sep. 22, 2009. I have searched for a customer service number on the bill and to no avail. Only a web site and could not get to that site. So, I am here with this complaint and for fear that I will have credit problems with RDigest for not paying $29.93.

I am overseeing my 89 year old mothers activities and she had received the exact same letter, with identical dates listed and the same dollar amount due. She did get something in the mail and returned it to the sender on September 8th, 2009. I have not gone any further with the follow-up at this time, but I do find this deception very disappointing. (as a side note... I thought that I read that RD is or has just filed for bankruptcy). They sent a notice to me because they don't deal with the public and sent me a check from a licensed bonded insurance company for the amount of $2, 921.91 which was part of my winnings to pay insurance and processing charges on my...

Reader's Digest / Trusted Media Brands unsolicited books

This company is truly appalling.
Notwithstanding an order issued against them by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in 2003/5 and an undertaking that they would not make payment demands for unsolicited goods...they are again up to their old tricks
My 85 year old mother ( recently deceased) has payment demands for a plethora of unsolicited items including childrens books.
The excuse no doubt this time is the same as the last ...a breakdown in their 'systems' as they argued before the tribunal

Reader's Digest / Trusted Media Brands Scam letters

i have been sent a letter informing me of a place of winning a quarter of a million pounds among millions in the UK- which i personally think is bizarre. so the reader's digest people tell me that many others have also been lucky enough to win the large amounts of money.

is this too good to be true! in addition they have given a 72 hour
limit for entrees. i mean why would they possibly give 250'000 away for non-customers. we are not even loyal customers- we hav not even spent a penny on a reader's digest.. so why! is this a scam?

they also have a picture of a woman named helen and many others claiming they have won! yeah surely there is some catch!

HELP! in addition there isn't a fixed name from the person, all we are told is

your sincerely

a mysterious squiggle which looks like jeremy jacob but can possibly be any other!

and then ends with Finance director...

I also received the same letter. The check seems to be legit but I've heard about people cashing checks from an unknown person and once you've deposited the check then the person who sent the check in the first place has all your bank account info. i'm very curious to see if this is for real or not... I think I will be contacting Reader's Digest to find out what's really going on

I say go cash it & let us know the results. Nothin' suspicious about winning a sweepstakes you didn't enter.

As we say in Canada, "Jeez Buddy", "What's wrong with you?"

Take it to your bank and deposit the cheque (that's how we spell 'check' here). If it is not a real cheque/check your bank will let you know.
