Don, t know where the company is - but known worldwhide - but sergeants flea control nearly killed my little dog - it is poison and kills very painfully and sureley. My vet tells me there are many cases like this but most are not so lucky like little spicky - after treatment and a bath in dawn dishsoap he is finally getting better (26 houres)
The product needs to be taken off the market - - - -
It is very poisones
We just picked up our Chihuahua (5.9 pounds) from the vet... She may live? We have to watch for seizures for the next 48 hours. She received shots steroids and benadryl shots to reveres the reaction she had from the Sergeants flea medicine. Her lips and eyes are dark red, she is swollen around her neck, she whimpered all night, she is shaking her head uncontrollably... Needless to say - I think she was better with the fleas!
We bathed our new cats (one is 18 months and the other amost 7 months) in Sergeant's SKIP-FLEA Flea & Tick Shampoo for Cats and Kittens last Friday - August 6th .. We just rescued them a week prior and were asked to wait a whole week before bathing them due to recent spaying and neutering ... He'd not cooperated very well during the rinse process and so there was some of the shampoo just was not rinsed completely off. I did find it strange that he did not dry himself at all -- he'd just let himself airdry. Well, the older and larger one had no visible symptoms while the younger one became very lethargic and had a runny nose. He just laid around, so I put some food and water in small containters and took them to him. He ate and drank his water with no problems ... soon after he got up for more. I did not connect all this together. Somehow though, he smelled so bad, so here I go and bathed him again today ... this time I rinsed him very well ... He was not happy with me at all! Again, he didn't dry himself ... just air-dried. He was not a happy camper .. did not like me much at all ... He was himself today ... but, we noticed that he has a lot of saliva, and continues to have a runny nose.
I will be returning the Sergeant's shampoo! And, will NOT use that mess EVER again!
Thanks to all who participate here with our accounts!
These flea drops about killed my cat also. He was given 3 baths to remove this stuff. It has been 2 months he is still sleeps all the time and is very skinny. He is eating now and looking a little better though. I'm still not sure if he will ever recover fully from using this product. It really upsets my young daughter that her cat is so sick. They ought to be ashamed of themselves selling this product.
We unfortuntaly have experienced the same reactions from this horrible chemical, our loving house cat was scratching and since it was between paydays we picked up sargents gold thinking this will be a good stop gap until we could afford the good stuff. We applied drops around noon and went down for a nice afternoon nap. When I came out of the bedroom, found him unresponsive and tremors through out his body, quick dash to vet for a wash, IV, muscle relaxer and 250 dollars later he seems to be recovering. We are currently in the waiting stage to verify that once the muscle relaxers wear off he is okay. We will be urging everyone we know that this is a horrible product and needs to be taken off the shelves immediately!
I bought sergeants frea meds for cats. after 3 hours of this on my cat he started to go crazy. i looked up sergeants on line to see if there was any side efferct. i wash my cat with shampo 4 times. i hope my cat will be o.k. i will take him in tomorrow to the vet. i could of lost my cat if i kept this flea meds on him any longer. do not use this sergeants for cats.
This stuff is nothing short of poison! My 11 month old puggle is now in severe pain and miserly only 12 hours after giving him Sareants Gold 9-20lbs. His back legs are twitching, he's obviously nervous and lethargic and just not himself. I've bathed him twice with regular shampoo for humans to take this poison out of his coat. He's still grabbing at his shoulder blades and his bottom where I applied the tube. I feel horrible. He's still eating and drinking and I'm nursing him through the next 48 hours praying he'll improve. Here's a tip: smell your dog where you applied the "poison". If you can still smell it, continue to bathe them every 12 hours. I will never buy any medication over the counter for my puggle again! If your reading this, I hope it's not too late for your family pet. After reading these posts for hours, it seems that your best bet is to wash your dog repeatedly and pray. If your dog or cat is seizing, seek medical attention immediately. It could mean liver or kidney failure.
I just put the Sargeants Gold on my morkie (4.5 lbs.) and my maltese (8.0lbs.) and within one hour both my dogs were drooling and moving around non-stop. Both dogs lost so much fluid that they soaked my comforter which is very thick. I immediately washed both dogs in dog shampoo and force fed them water all night through an empty syringe. I came very close to losing both my animals. I, too, am without a job and I am disabled. This might not have happened if I could have afforded a vet. The fact that this company KNOWS how many animals have been killed or hurt is disgusting. There should be a law prohibiting them from selling this stuff. I will tell everyone I know about this. And I pray for God to help all of you who have lost an animal with this product. My thoughts are with you all.
Something needs to be done about this company. I just had to take my moms cat to be put down because of the severe liver damage, due to using seargents flea and tick shampoo. She hasnt sleep in two weeks because she feels that she had killed her cat. Its really messed up when you take your animal into the vet and they tell you that, ya that seargents shampoo does severe liver damage to older cats and it happens all the time. This has been the worse two weeks watching the cat wither away trying to drink water and not able to because of the burns on her throat and mouth prevented her from doing so. I am so angry that my moms best friend of 14 years is dead over something that should not be on the shelves...
I put Sargeants Flea Control on our 2 cats in an effort to save some money. About an hour later our male cat began having severe seizures and was foaming at the mouth. I gave him a bath with shampoo to get the stuff off him. His condition only worsened. He was on the floor in uncontrollable seizures. He died in my arms after hours of pain and suffering. If I owned a gun, I would have used it to end his suffering. A soon as our female cat exhibited the symptons, I immediately bathed her with dishwashing soap. After 24 hours of mild shaking and lethargy, she made a full recovery. I only wish I had responded to the male cat sooner. Maybe he would have survived. The experience was heartbreaking for my entire family. I will never use another Sergeants product again. This crap needs to be taken off the shelves.
WOW - this stuff is HORRIBLE! We put Sergeants Flea Control on our 6 pound Pomeranian and it created a CHEMICAL BURN the size of the liquid on her back! We've bathed her 4 times and she's has been suffering for 5 days. The spot is raw, itchy, and just getting a scab now. We've taken her to the vet and had to tranquilize her to stop her from clawing the spot. She has (2) kinds of cream, Benadryl, and now a tranquilizer. Sergeants needs to pull this crap off the market!
Betty White supports it so it must be good. So what if it kills your best friend. Betty is making a ton of money from it. I wish they would put some on her and see how well she does.
we used this on our 4 cats i used just a quater on each cat because we only had one tube left. about 4 hours after putting this on my cats one end up having a grandmal seizure and we had to go to the vet at 1 am. then after staying up and watching my other cats at 8 am we were back at the vets office with the other 2 they almost died you need to take this off the market. Thank god we had the 1200 dollars to pay for their vet bills But this is awful
IM PISSED, I POISENED MY 20 POUND CAT WITH THE SEARGENTS DROPS. HE HAD SEIZURES, AND A FEVER OF l04. I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO DIE. MY VET BILL WAS $900, THEY HAD TO PUT IVS IN, AND KEEP HIM OVERNIGHT. NEVER BUY CHEAP FLEA MEDICINE.
I gave my cat Cooper some of the Sargeant Gold flea and tick liquid product as directed. Less than 12 hours later he had a seizure, foam from his mouth, and became very lethargic shortly thereafter. After a frantic call to the vet, DAWN liquid bath(s) and some praying he pulled out of it. Albeit very wet and miserable. It doesn't pay to be cheap sometimes - use products that the Vet's suggest. Stay away from this crap!
Justin
Folks, I got to tell you all, as a 20 + yr Vet tech, I see pets come into the clinic during flea and tick season suffering from poisoning, or reactions to many OTC products. they simple are not safe to use period. After all, they are poisons, period. they do what they are intended to do, and that is...yes...you guessed it...poison what it comes in contact with.
Furthermore, simply put, lets say you want to save a few bucks and put an OTC powder on your beloved pet. Do not forget that this pet shares the same living space that you do, often in or around your kitchen or dining area, and or cuddles up and sleeps with you or your kids. Yikes!
So, simply look at it this way. if it's on your pets, it's also on you and your children, and possibly in your food. Got it?
Now you are thinking, what alternatives are there? well, there are several, all have pro's and cons. I am not here to promote any products, but I use three different products for flea control, two of them are pill form, one is a fast acting, very effective, but temperary treatment for fleas that has been used for many years that begins with a 'C', and is reasonably priced. I then follow up the newer product that must be placed on the skin for long term flea, tick, heartwarm, and parasite control with the brand name that begins with 'EV'. Now the newest pill form flea control out there is fantastic, but control fleas only, its a huge honker of a brown, beef/chemical flavored pill that begins with the letters "Comf" . We are lately hearing from our clients that the spot on product we sell, 'FL' may not be offering as effective treatment as it has in the past, I am not sure this is accurate, but, I suspect it is possible that the fleas may be developing a resistance to the medication. It is a very common occurance for such to happen. Just keep in mind that overall, cheap OTC products are often ineffective, and at worse, problem plagued.
My cat died this morning after using the Sargents flea product. It was a cruel death that he did not deserve. He shook and seized for 4 hours before passing away this morning at 6:30am. I throwed the rest of the product I had left and any shampoos that I bought by this company. They need to take this product off the shelves. It kills! I am so heartbroken and feel so guilty for putting this on my beloved pet of 3 years. Thanks A Lot Sargents!
Seargants flea medacation almost killed my little dog too! He started having seizures and convultions and the company has a 800 number for emergencies on the box and when I called it they totally denied the fact that it was the flea medication that made him sick! Very poor customer service! This product needs to be taken off the shelfes immeadiatlly!
I used Sergeants Silver Flea and Tick drops on my 14year peek-a-poo last night and she had the same reaction as everyone else. Immediately she became restless (running from room to room), she was itching her self like crazy where I put the drops and her back legs starting twitching and jerking. Not only did she have a reaction but I had one as well, the skin under my eyes began burning for hours. After 3 hours of her acting like this I began reading all these horror stories and immediately gave her a bath washing her with soap. It seemed to ease her symptoms some, but she is still is itching a little and her legs are still jerking. I can not afford to go to the vet and I am hoping that since I didn’t leave it on too long that she will be ok. This is my baby I have had her ever since she was a puppy and if anything was to happen to her I will be devastate. I URGE everyone NOT to use this product at all! It should be taken off the market immediately!
i used seargent flea spray for cats on my cat precious one night and the next morning found her completely unable to move i took her to the vet friday saturday he said she could lift her head but that was all she is also bleeding in her kidneys i pray she will make it they shouldnt sale something that is so toxic my cat wouldve been better off with the fleas!
my cat precious is in the vets office bc of this crappy seargent flea spray! made specificly for cats!
My little Pug has burn marks on his neck, tail and the worst is his shoulder blades and I only used HALF of a tube. I have contacted the company who is sending me some papers and wants me to send them the pictures of the burns so they can see if they MIGHT pay the vet bill. He had to have this neck shaved and antibiotic shots and a steroid shot. Poor little guy. I cant believe they put a product strong enough to burn through his skin like that. Just terrrible.
My dog died last night because we used sergeant's flea and tick shampoo. He licked some of the soap suds but I really didn't think anything about it. We woke up in the middle of the night because we heard him whining and saw that be was covered in diareha. We sprayed him offf with water and noticed he couldn't stand up by himself. He had difficulty breathing, his tongue was severly swollen and his stomach was bloated. He died shortly after, about 20 minutes, because he could no linger breath, even after we tried CPR. We didn't even have time to take him to a 24/7 vet. After reading everyone's post on here, I know that it was indeed this product that killed my dog. THIS PRODUCT NEEDS TO BE BANNED AND PULLED OFF THE SHELVES! I don't want anyone else to go through what we had to go through.
All their products suck. Due to me being laid off. Wanted to save money. Their cat shampoo for flea and ticks is total junk. Their Flea and tick collars are useless. Would never buy any of their products again.
Same thing happened to us - applied Zodiac flea spray on 9 pounds miniature schnauzer, according to label, but she licked/chew it off of her fur. Soon enough she started to have symptoms of trembling, muscle twitching- and she was very lethargic, seemed depressed. It was very scary, she couldn't stop these involuntary movements. Both of her back legs were twitching. We were all panicking and did not know what could be the issue and what's that line after when we should head out to the vet.
First we did not think that this could be related to the flea treatment. Then slowly we Googled our way, then finally the picture came together, (also found this board). We are truly shocked that some companies are able to put such product to the market, make us PAY for this s.it, while we are slowly murdering our little innocent pets. How this can be possible in 2013 in the US?
After some research I see endless complaints, many many cases when people have to lose their furry pals, it's really CRAZY!
Do you want to know how is it possible? Here are some of the things I've found:
Our pets are a matter of serious money for some:
"Merial — a subsidiary of Sanofi-Aventis SA (FRONTLINE PRODUCTS) — and Bayer collectively sell about $2 billion of the flea and tick products each year, according to the lawsuit."
Article here: http://www.law360.com/articles/277609/bayer-merial-hit-with-32b-class-suit-over-flea-meds
It's just pennies for them to pick up random vet bills. and while driving fancy cars and away on nice luxury getaways, between two margaritas the CEOs can't care less about one or two pups down the drain. Talking about social responsibility...
Why are they doing this? Because THEY CAN. There's no law in place against them, so civils have to pay out of pocket to prove that their product is harmful. At the same time, the companies that owns Zodiac and Front Line, had an army of 8 lawyers in total. Of course. You would probably have 16 if it would come down to protect your billion dollar company.
I just don't understand since they are already in this business, why not spend a little more and come up with a different formula? Something more sustainable, that would not leave so many grieving people behind?
I am pretty sure that NONE OF US bathed our pets in these products, we ALL DID REASONABLE USE, so PLEASE DON'T COME WITH THE BS about reading the label and small letters!
"Two of the most popularly used brands for flea treatments are Frontline and Advantage. Both brands have an increasing number of complaints. The most common adverse reactions are skin problems and seizures.
There were 26, 977 incidents reported in 2010. The number of reported incidents in 2008 were around 44, 000. Consumers are petitioning for improvements in the ingredients and are getting involved in class action lawsuits. In addition to the cases reported each year, we can assume there are numerous injuries and deaths that have gone unreported."

"Each year, millions of Americans purchase flea and tick products believing that they couldn't be sold unless they were proven safe. But the EPA did not begin to review pet products for safety until 1996. As noted on CPI's website, "The EPA cannot make its own assessment because unlike the regulations directing the FDA's approval of human products, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act does not require pet products to undergo field trials prior to approval. So the agency can only require less extensive testing, often only on one breed of dog or cat."

This is where dog owners stand: Class action Law suit was filed and was lost in 2013 March.

These products are still on the shelves as of right now, and people are still buying them. WE HAVE TO TRY to make a difference!
Lawyers fighting for our pets needed our support. They couldn't show enough data, because WE HAVE TO REPORT at the right place! If we don't report it, it's like never happened and THAT"s EXACTLY THESE COMPANIES USE AGAINST US!
"According to Merial, the rate of customer complaints from 2009 through 2012 for all of its Frontline products — is .046 percent. And there are even fewer consumer complaints with regard to Bayer’s products, the judge said."
Companies producing poisonous flea products are afraid of reports, that could possibly undermine their profits. Humane Society must have already run these circles because they took a more strategic approach when all they asked for is the poison hotline in the product label, so all data can be collected at the same place. GUESS WHAT! the number is still not on it.
"I think we are only scratching the surface as far as the actual injuries or deaths that occur as a result of these products, " Adam Golfarb of the Humane Society said. In a letter, the Humane Society told the EPA it wants a National Poison Control Hotline so complaints are processed in a central location. The Humane Society wants that number added to the labels of flea and tick products"

And this is the reason those lawyers fighting for us, they can only show 0.046%.
This is what we have to do.
1. Tell the National Pesticide Information Center: Call [protected] to report an incident. They WANT TO HEAR your story.
2. EPA also welcomes reports directly from pet owners. You can use the "Ask a question" option on the Pesticides Web site to contact them, searching for "flea and tick" in the drop-down menu and looking for Question 5482. Please be sure to include all of the information requested. Or just click here: http://pesticides.supportportal.com/ics/support/ticketnewwizard.asp?style=classic
3. The HSUS would also like to keep track of these cases.* Please send your contact information, the product name, a brief description of the health problem, and a brief summary of your veterinarian's findings to The HSUS at the following address:
The Humane Society of the United States
Companion Animals Department: Flea Products
2100 L St. NW
Washington, D.C. 20037
4. Make informed decisions about pet products. This website will give you information before you shop:
http://www.simplesteps.org/greenpaws-products
5. Donate $5 or more if you can afford for Humane Society. It will give you a piece of mind that you do participate in meaningful action in every way you can. It can also serve as recognition and appreciation for those who do the fights for us. If all of us who are affected (50.000 people and more) donated a small amount, Humane Society could at least have some funding against these giant corporations.
You could also consider donating to http://www.hartzvictims.org/, they specifically fight against over the counter flea products. Their motto : "One more victim is one too many" . The federal judge could've keep this in mind before ruling on the 0.046%.
6. Call your friends and family who are dog owners, and let them know the shocking findings and your experience. Put it on Facebook. The word of mouth is still harmful for the profit of these big companies.
7. Vote this post UP so the chance of other pet owners seeing it will raise. So they can participate in taking action.
Anyone who lost their dogs or cats: I'm truly sorry about your loss :(
I can't even imagine how it would feel if I would lose my puppy because of using a product from a pet store. Especially when you have to go to the vet who says" Yeah. I see this all the time". There's hard to find what's the right lesson to learn. i am just hoping for better days, and future generations that will never have to face such situations.
As for us, our dog had a mild reaction and the muscle trembling went away after 3-4 hours. We bathed her 4 times with regular soap, and kept her warm and in comfort. We are still stand by and keep watching how she acts, but for now that was it, the symptoms seem to fade. We were lucky.
i gave my pittbull molly a bath in the flea and tick shampoo and she broke out in hives and was not acting right all an the sergeants was the only thing i used on her...me and my fiance rushed her to the bath tub and washed her in dish liquid im praying she makes it through the night if not ill be calling my lawyer...if this product is harmful to animals it shouldnt be sold...im sure if any of the ladys or gentalmen that owns or works for this company washed there pet in this shampoo and they died from it they would react the same way
I had used the flea shampoo and the flea control gold, I have 4 dogs and all of them had a reaction to this treatment. I am really concerned about this product. Not only did my dogs have a reaction an hour after a bath with the shampoo and the flea gold. my dogs STILL had fleas. I have a lot of money in vet bills for my 4 dogs. I will never buy this product again, and I'm telling everyone I know and then some, posted it on face book everybody needs to get the word out. My heart goes out to those who have experienced the same reaction by using this product.
So many families have to watch their pets go through neurological poisoning and maybe even death before this company pulls this crap off the shelf and actually do something about it? I makes me so flipping mad that they keep selling it to vets offices and in bulk online... until a child gets a hold of it and dies then they might do something about it. Consumers beware your children may have to see your beloved pet quivering and dying before their eyes but don't worry they make millions of dollars selling this product so they are happy.
Is it just the small breed dogs that seem to be affected by this? All that read seem to be under 25 lbs. Does anyone have bad experiences with their dog over 30 lbs?
Product is so harmful it is lethal! The worse of all people are those who maim and kill defenseless animals.
View this and tell me its safe https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=885558434803629
I have not seen this product or used it before, but I do know how bad it hurts animals. I think you and your company should be very ashamed for doing this to animals and for knowing that its happening yet still not doing anything about it. I have seen a cat having a seizer because of your product and I cried very much even though I didn't know the cat. I just want you to know that I am going to make as many people know about this as possible! And I just hope that I can help to shut down your company.
Please take sergeant bansect off the market! By word of mouth your products will be banned from Consumers in the Rescue Realm and by Individual Consumers! Your Company should be sued in a nationwide class action suite w/pain and suffering included ! Many had to have their beloved pets euthanized due to your bad products and those lucky enough to survive have never been the same, People who believed in your products assumed they were safe because they were allowed on the US markets ! Another thing frowned upon by people everywhere is your continues use of animals for lab experiments .I pledge to make a difference by forwarding all info to others . Let the people be the judge and jury ! Link to video of what your product has done to many of its victims = https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=885558434803629&set=vb.100000484431962&type=2&theater
sergeant YOU should be ashamed of yourself for putting a product on your shelves that knowingly causes pets especially cats to have seizures and in the end result having to be euthanized. I just got done watching a video of a poor family having to put their precious cat down after giving her the dose of bansect that was suggested on your box for their size cat.how many more animals are going to have to suffer before you do something about your damn lethal product. Paying for vet bill for people doesn't help comfort loss of a family member. these families should be suing the hell out of you, and your product should be banned from ALL shelves!
Back in [protected] I used Sergeants on my golden retriever mix. He is 12 now and I feel blessed he is still with me but I believe this is the reason he now has seizures. I didn't really think about why before till I started reading the posts of what this stuff has been doing to our babies. Their product didn't really work all that good in the first place for getting rid of the fleas. I know that when we use any kind of medicine like this that it is a pesticide and there are risks but when you see so many complaints form one company it is sad to think they have not changed or pulled their products. Shame on a company to keep placing or pets in such danger when they are aware of what it is doing. I just wonder how many have died from this that never put 2 and 2 together and didn't complain about it. We need to make it known all across the world what these products are doing to our babies. I wish there was a safer alternative to get rid of the pest but I for one have not found one. These products need to be pulled from the shelves till they fix the problems. Everyone who has ever had any kind of problems with their products should get together and sue the pants off of this company for what they have done and continue to do to our pets. The big dog in the picture is the one that has the seizures now. He only has 3-4 a year but I still believe their product is the cause of them
Sergeants: You should watch this clip. I see a lawsuit coming. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=885558434803629&fref=nf
I used sergeants on my dog and he became extremely ill.
He is a small dog at about 15 to 20 lbs. He had seizures and
Vomiting.
I never used the product, but I have seen what it does. Why is it still on the market? You clearly know it can kill our pets, yet you leave it there! Our pets are part of the family! We want to protect them not kill them! YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR PRODUCTS OFF THE MARKET IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT SAFE FOR PETS!
Sandra how in gods name are you still working and supporting a company that does this to animals? Do you think your words of "less then satisfactory" experience with our product help families that lose there loved ones due to a horrible and long process of seizures. if you really care about the people that have these bad experiences you will put videos like the one below on every one of your employees computer screens and FORCE THEM to see what they are doing to animals and how they are destroying families. As far as i'm concerned your company and Hertz company are murderers I do not know how you sleep at night promoting your product.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=885558434803629
My apologies i meant Julie not Sandra
How can you continue to sell a product that causes such horrible consequences in peoples loved companions? Look at this cat's suffering from this poison!
