screwing the account holders
I have been a member of SunTrust for more that 15 years. This is the worst Bank, they charge outrageous fees for any and everything, have no loyalty to middle class or poor account holders because they are the ones who are hit with the fees that can be avoid on many terms, because SunTrust doesn't approve many loans for people who are not on the scale of which they think you should be (think about it) they just hit them with fee after fee knowing that this will only damage and leave the middle and poor class account holders in the rears and owing monies that they truly don't have ... ex: Suntrust bounced 5 checks in my account although 4 of them would have cleared with monies left over. They try to tell me that they processed the largest to the smallest ... thats why I was hit with so many fees.
The government is alway investigating something why won't they investigate these banks who are making there lazy shareholders richier by screwing the account holders.

extended overdraft fees
I had read all the posting on Bank of America. Well I just want to tell you that Suntrust is not much better. Just recently I started seeing "extended" overdraft fees. This is now policy that should you have overdraft anything in your account for more that 7 days, you will get an additional $36 added as a fee. Even if its an item as small as $3.00 Which is what happened to me.
Should there be a cap/percentage according to the dollar amount that bounced. I mean $3! That is insane! My $3 dollar item ended up costing me $75! What can we do? Anything? and has any one taken the time to research who has the cheapest fees and now apparently "exteded" fees? I would like to hear if so!

suntrust fraud banking fee
On August 27th 2009, my husbands Check was Automatically deposited into our Checking account. This Bank took 400$ in Banking Fee's out of my husbands Check. We had decided to stop with Suntrust that day. On August 31st 2009, we used our Debit cards for the last time, as they where turned off. On September 2nd 2009, my Husband went into the branch of...

I had four charges pending on my account from 10/19. I had $300 in the account when my wife charged and paid three bills electronically for $220 each on 10/20. This morning I went online to check my account and noticed $144 dollars in penalties, but still had a balance of $40 dollars and $600 in pending charges. I was going to depositi money today to cover those pending charges. When I called Suntrust, they told me that the unavailable funds penalty(UAF) is done on available balances including pending items. They told me that they put two of the $220 items first, then posted the other four transactions(but not the two $220 ones), all with penalty fees because the two transactions of $220 put my available balance into the negative. I got run around for two hours, everyone including supervisors giving me different answers. They told me I would be charged more UAF penalties if my available balance remained negative, even if they do not clear the pending transactions. Also, I would be charged NSF(Non sufficient funds penalties if they did clear. The only answer that was consistant was "That's how we do things". They are ripping people off with their penalty charges. SUNTRUST is the worst bank I have ever been associated with. After everything clears, I will be closing my account!

Hey Jimmerson and Maggie,
Im glad you think that the Charges are the account holders fault. When in fact it is suntrust that puts charges in a "pending" status. This status is so unpredictable and inconsistant that the bank can make money anytime they want to. Suntrust and BOA is leading the way in screwing people out of their money in new clever ways. Ie.. The Pending status. The new bank laws tried to cover this charge by telling the banks that they can not allow charges to go through if their is insufficient funds. The Pending status is a loophole. Clearly as a Suntrust account holder they are still allowing transactions to process at the terminal with insufficient balances.
If you idiots think that this is all the account holders fault, then you must be completely unfamiliar with the banking industry.
Yeah, but the bank is making money off these NSF penalties. They give people with lots of money lots of breaks, and hit the poor people who live from paycheck to paycheck the shaft, and these people cannot afford this in the first place.
Why did the banks authorize payment? They could have just said "not enough in account" and denied payment. No, instead, they pay all these things, and then hit them with $75.00 for something, $35.00 for something (three or four times), and in a bit, the charges are in the hundreds.
No, they just make money off people who need help, not penalties!
I'm afraid you won't have any luck getting those fees reversed. But I do have a suggestion for the future, if you don't mind?
When I got my first checking account, my daddy told me (and remember, this was before debit cards) "Don't even think about writing a check until AFTER the money is in your account." (He had a friend who got into a jam trying to beat checks to the bank.)
Now, I've spent years with a bank that many consider the King of Abusive Overdraft Fees -- Bank of America -- but, following Daddy's advise, I have never had an nsf fee. Not one.
So, you might want to try making that deposit before doing the bill pays instead of after. It can't hurt, and maybe it will help.
failure to notify of deposit issue
I made a deposit to my checking account to cover a mortgage payment. Because the amount was not written in - the numbers were there just not the written amount - they did not deposit the check. Rather than notify me, they held the check for a week. Until the mortage payment bounced a week later, I was not aware that the deposit was not made. They said they called me but when asked what number they used, they gave me a three year old number which is no longer on my account. They did not call the number on the account nor send a notice via U.S. mail. I incurred $94.00 in charges on the bank and mortgage end. Their only response was that they could not deposit the check. I closed the bank account immediately. The arrogance of these people is unbelievable and they refuse to acknowledge that the customer even has a point.

Yep, Suntrust is the worst banking institution, in the world. Crooks, Liars, and Thieves!
lost my check deposit. now claims it's not their fault
So I deposit a check at Suntrust Bank on October 2, 2009. On Wednesday the following week, the check has still not been deposited so I call up Suntrust. The operator that I talk to confirms that the check should have been posted already and is unsure why there is no money in my account.
So I then get told that Suntrust lost the deposit for $571.59 and that they need my authorization to look for it and that it could take 10 business days or more. The authorization cannot be given over the phone. I have to file a report with them which I did and provide them everything I can including a copy of the check (which they lost). I couldn't provide a copy of the check to thema nd am now being told that they still don't know where the money is located and that someone else may have been given the money instead but they're not sure.
Fast forward to today and I get told that them losing my check and making me late on my payments is just something I'm going to have to deal with. If they cannot locate teh check in 10 days, then someone will need to work with me and that could take months while they sit on my money. I asked if I could charge interest since that's what they would have done if I lost their money or was holding onto it. They obviously said no and that it's not the way it works. They are allowed to lose my money and not do anything to help find it while I am supposed to wait.
I suppose I could ask the check issuer to cancel the check. But that will cost them and they in turn would charge me. Moral of this story - Suntrust likes to steal money from little people. My car payment is probably going to be late now thanks to them and my CC rates could go up if I don't find a way to pay the balance off soon.
By the way, I think I'm also going to "tweet" about this every day until I get my money back from Suntrust. Maybe I'll tweet twice a day. :-)
Look for "tweets" at http://twitter.com/mcoutinho1982

extended overdraft fees
I had overdrawn my acct by forgetting that I had an a payment that I forgot about which was my fault, I had been charged 4 overdraft fees of 36.00 each plus the 101.00 ( the payment that came through). I went in the bank and they had told me that they pay the larger amount first as they think that it is a major bill that needed to be paid, the four smaller charges came in before the larger charge, and they did credit 2 of the over draft fees back, which i was thankful, I now noticed on my account since it is 7 days overdrawn and I told them that I wouldnt get paid until the 9th and they said that would be fine. now i noticed they had tacked on 36, 00 for Extended Overdraft Fees which i was unaware of this charge until i found out about it online. I have had the acct for over 2 years now, how am i to remember that if this happened that they were going to charge this.. I am going into the back to see if i can get the charges removed, and then if not, once the acct becomes current I am going to see what they have to say when I close this account, I can not believe that this happens, especially when there is no notification that this is going to happen.. I hope that someone can pass a bill or something to reduce the fees that these banks are charging for overdraft fees, and this is the first time in 2 frickin years that I have over drafted.. this really sucks. I hope that by law that they can not charge this amount of fee for overdrafts. thanks for hearing my side of the story of suntrust banks- steven in saint petersburg, fl

last week my girlfriend and i knowingly overdrafted are account on a friday. we had two dollars and some change in the account. she went to the dollar store, two days before friday and spent one dollar and seven cents, wich left us with about a dollar in the account. then on friday i went to seven eleven and spent eleven dollars; overdrafting the account. so we knew there would be a $36 fee pluss the $10 i spent. well it didnt work out that way they held on to the dollar store transaction until after the seven eleven trans action went through. this overdrafted the account twice wich is $36+$36+$10= -$82, instead of the $46 dollars we thought we would owe them. so, we said ok thats fine they got us again those sneaky ###. we had to wait a week before either one of us got paided again to deposit any money into the account. so, on friday when we got paid her money was directly deposited into the account from her payroll at mid night. we checked the account to make sure they didnt hit us with an extended overdraft fee and they didnt the only money they took out was the $82. so, we went and paid bills and spent the rest of our money on what ever we wanted to spend it on. we left $4.52 in the account. after 5:00 p.m. that evening we checked our account online and sure enough there was that extended overdraft fee of $36 wich put our account into the negative $31.48 and charging an additional overdraft fee of $36 for going into the negative. now our account is at -$67.48. we called the bank and told had they posted that extended overdraft fee at the beginning of the day we would have left enough money in the account to cover it. they said that there was nothing they could do about it, that our ounce a year courtesy overdraft removal had already been used in january. in january they gave us an overdrat fee for nothing then we had to call and argue with them to get it removed and they called it a courtesy! you are supposed to have seven days to deposit money into your account to avoid getting an extended overdraft fee, but its really six days. because when we overdrafted the account last friday they counted friday as a day. it should have been fri to sat 1 day, sat to sun 2 days, sun to mon 3 days, mon to tues 4 days, tues to weds 5 days, weds to thurs 6 days, and finally thurs to fri 7 days. banks are full of heartless money grubbing [censored]bags. i hope they all die broke and overdrafted.
auto loan
I had an auto loan with SunTrust Bank since 2004. In July 2009 I made the 60th payment (the last payment according to the loan agreement for a total of $66, 000). I then start getting calls from SunTrust stating that I still owe $3300! They said I had over 20 late fees and interest on the late fees. Never once in 5 years did SunTrust notify me that a late fee was charged to my account.
I always mailed my payments in and allowed plenty of time for it to reach them. On the account statement that they sent me, the late fee was charged on the 22nd of each month and wouldn't you know it-my payments always posted on the 23rd.
I have sent them all of the copies of every check that was written for the loan and bank statements. They are unwilling to work this out. They are now threatening to repo the truck and report me late to the credit bureaus unless I pay them this $3300 immediately.
It is absolutely criminal that banks do this. I am the third person in my community that has had the exact thing happen with SunTrust.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
SunTrust is yet doing this... My loan matured this month and they're stating that I still owe $2, 000.00 on it. How do they get away with this ---what can one do to make this bank stop this?
So what are you going to do? I am in a similar situation and would like to find an attorney to do a class action suit against SunTrust as they just keep on ripping off the working class and refuse to work with people.
closed checking account (what a joke)
In July, I went to Suntrust and cancelled my checking account. The lady helping me, and myself, researched my account to see what outstanding checks and debits had cleared so as to leave enough in the account to avoid NSFs. She gave me my cash and documented that I wished to close my account and the balance was at -0-. I went on my merry way with the belief...

Don't you dare deposit a check into this bank! They won't give you one cent until the next day! A local check they will not show funds available till the next day! so even tho you went to the bank at 8 am.. sorry buddy better wait till the next day! They suck I am soo pisssed
At suntrust if you ask to cash the check then deposit it. it will deposit it immediately and you will be able to use the money.
All banks can actually put a hold on check deposits if they want too. I usually goto my local bank which isn't suntrust and deposit my paycheck either thurs. or fri. if it's before their cutoff time and they will credit the acct. and I can actually view it online or withdraw out of the atm when they update their system for the evening. I also have a suntrust acct. which I hardly use and cash will show show up immediately and what I'll do is withdraw cash from my local bank and deposit that into suntrust so there is no way they can dispute cash. If I deposit a check it can take a day or two for them to credit into the acct. It's not just suntrust doing that. If you look around there are banks that are more leinent when it comes to that.
checking account
I opened a Suntrust checking account online. After a year or so, I no longer needed it. I live in Alabama and there are no Suntrust banks in my state. So I tried to find a site online where I could close my account. It had been inactive for several months and I knew there were no outstanding checks. I could find nothing online to accommodate me. So I called a Suntrust bank in the neighboring city of Pensacola, Florida, about 60 miles from my home. I was told that if I wanted to close my account, I would need to send a letter and that there would be a $25.00 charge to close the account via mail! I explained that I live in Alabama and the nearest Suntrust bank is 60 miles away and with gas being so expensive, I did not think it feasible to travel 120 miles round trip to close an account. I explained that I had opened the account online and would think that I could close it online. I was told "NO, you will "have to" come into one of our branches or close the account by mail. So much for "customer service". ...no more Suntrust for me.
holding my money
I opened my account with Sun Trust on line on Friday 7/24/09, $200.00 cash, on Monday I went to the bank and withdrew $100.oo to pay bills, I havent received my checks or my atm card yet. On Tuesday I went to the bank and was told they have closed my account due to a negative report they received and they would send my money to me in 6 TO8 WEEKS!, I couldnt believe it, they didnt even have the decency to at least call me and let me get my money out, that was all the money I had to my name, I had to pay my electric bill and now its shut off, and I have no money to feed my kid, I have no idea why they would keep my money for two months, its outrageous, Im filing a civil complaint, Im going to call the police and charge them with theft and then call the newspaper and the local tv station, this is the worst customer abuse I have ever heard of and they keep telling me there is nothing they can do.

customer service issues
They have lied to me numerous times, they put a fraud hold on my payroll check that I deposited on friday 7/25/2009 and was told the funds would be in there immediately, went to make a purchase, was declined. went back to same bank and teller and now was told midnight. Saturday morning, I paid my monthly bills, went to buy food for my family and was declined again. Called customer service they not put a fraud hold because the funds couldnt be verified. So I spoke with a corporate manager would told me that the corporate office could do nothing that basically the branches ran the company, so if they can't do anything why to they make close to 6 figures a year. Anyways now I was told monday before i could get food for my family and gas to go back to work. Monday, still not available, so i called again and now it was said that unless the other bank sent over the funds, they couldn't release it til August 1st over a week away ( no remember I had no food for my wife and 7 yr old daughter and no gas for work), so I call my works bank and was told tuesday morning the funds would be sent over. Tuesday morning posted lifted but now they charged me 144.00 in overdraft charge for the bills I paid with my check before they put a hold on it. So again I called customer service and was told they would be refunded once the funds were available. They had the funds from the other bank and refused to release my money still, now I have to wait to August 1st and hope they give me back the overdraft charges. This is the worst bank by far, I am closing my account once the money is in there and sent a complaint to the better business bureau.

Suntrust bank is horrible. I opened an acct online. It was approved. It needed $100 to open checking and $100 to open savings. Within the next 3 days I received a visa check card in the mail and a password. Then 2 days later on a Friday, I called to activate my card and verify my balance. Balance was "0" in both accounts. Accounts were closed. They turned down my request for an account. They couldn't tell me when I would get my $200 back because the finance office wouldn't be open until monday. I called monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday asking where my money was. Finally on Thursday they told me it would go into dispute for 60 days and then it would go to check processing and I should expect my money in approx 90 days. They told me to dispute it with my bank. Well, I asked them and they said the process would be 60 days plus they would close my account. So Suntrust totally screwed me. Now they keep my $200 for 3 months and $200 is a lot of money for me. Groceries, prescriptions, etc. And rent is due first of the month. I never would have opened the acct online had I known this would happen. They should have declined the application or at least put it pending. Instead they stole my money and will keep it for 90 days...no fault of mine.

* so i honestly can't stand suntrust w . tha fees they give ; just looking into my savings account i see 10 + excessive withdrawal fees ; not even to mention how many i have in my checking .
- i closed my account once &+ am really thinking about closing my new one soon ; i opened up an account with another bank &+ they are so much better .
* when i went to take out all my cash from both accounts tha suntrust teller asked me to leave atleast $ 50 to pay for my fees ! ; i didn't even know that all my fees equaled to that ammount ; i hate suntrust's fees !
fraudulent charges
I had checked my checking account and found that they had taken a unavailable funds fee out and when I called the teller couldnt give me a reasonable explanation after putting me on hold for 3 times and finally credited my account. Also she told me that check charges are not the current $36.00 charge but $72.00 per check. They charge you an insufficient funds charge for $36.00 and then charge you a unavailable funds charge of $36.00. I think these charges are for the same thing just worded differently so they can rip you off. Times are hard and this company is asking for a bunch of money from the government to help them out. What are we getting for our money ? I plan on looking for another place to put my money.

I am a small business owner who use my Suntrust debit card to buy gas for my equipment. Recently they charge me $175 in fees even though the money was in my account for these transactions. They claim the gas stations put a hold on my account for $50 to $100 to guarantee they get their money for a $10 dollar gas purchase. Imagine 2 or 3 of these. All this time that I have been a customer and running my business in the same manner, I have had this to happen. Suntrust is not my idea of a bank that looks out for their customers. Even if they are at fault, they wii figure out a way to some of your money

We have been banking with Suntrust for over 30 years, and Suntrust don't give a rats tail about any of their valued clients. Well where do I start about all the rude, unfair, bunch of idiot's high up that make all the decisions on charging 35.00 on people if their 1.00 minus before their check clears. Read full review of SunTrust Banks and 8 commentshorrible customer service
I have been with SunTrust bank for over 10 years now. I have been severely burned by the m in the past. They posted an $800 as $300 to my checking account and caused all my bill payments to get returned. My credit cards were all put on hold and my bank account was in the negative. Many calls to management and customer service left me with no answers. It took me about 2 weeks to get everything straightened out.
Recently I went to a branch to exchange $2, 000 into foreign currency. I went to pick up the currency and I was told that it would be deducted from my account. I went out of the country with my money and when I got back I noticed that the money was still in my checking account.
I went to the bank to ask what the problem was. The woman who helped me at the Arlington, VA branch was so rude and insulting to me, as if I was the person in the wrong. She accused me of intentionally overdrawing the account and using the bank's money to pay bills. When I showed her that I had deposited a check that would cover all the bills I paid (which had not even cleared yet) she had the nerve to ask me if the check was going to clear!
She then showed me the amount of money that was going to be deducted from my account. The total was $10 more than the original amount. When I told her this she became impatient with me and said that this is what they were supposed to charge and that the first time they probably made a mistake. At this point I was infuriated that I was bringing this bank error, which would cost them $2, 000 of their money and they had the nerve to take more money than they said they originally would. At this point I brought it to her attention that I was the one helping them out by bringing this to their attention and I had to take time out of my schedule to come to the bank to notify them. She then responded with "we would have found the error eventually." Unbelievable!
I thought I was doing a good thing by letting the bank know that they forgot to take money out of my account. Instead of being thanked for my time and apologizing for the inconvenience I was insulted and treated with great disrespect. The people at this bank have absolutely no respect for their customers.
I was considering taking out a mortgage with this bank but now that I have seen this behavior I will never enter into any sort of long term financial agreement with them. If they can't keep track of their money how are they going to take care of mine?
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
They treated me the exact same way. I had to wait for almost an hour, after finding out their bank teller had made a big error on my account.
When I went in to get it all squared out, the customer service person didn't seem the least bit sympathetic, apologetic, or even respectful to me!
They just said, "well, people do make mistakes, " like that was some kind of slimy excuse to deduct funds from the wrong account, and cause my account to go into the negative! I'm quite disgusted with this branch, but also this bank period. I've noticed the good & professional people who once worked for this bank, no longer do, and I'm wondering just why!
I've also been treated quite rudely at several local branches and their interest rate on their savings account isn't squat! It's not even worth keeping your money in this bank to start with, but to add insult to injury, they are now not even being careful enough to be sure they handle their customers money correctly!
Now reading all these comments makes me wonder if I want to continue to do business with this bank. To think this teller who made the error, had actually worked at this bank for years too, makes it even worse.
Well, i got another bit of news for you. Even if it's THEIR mistake, they don't even want to bother to be apologetic for it!
We went to withdrawal some funds from our savings and put it into our checking account. There wasn't much money in the checking account, and we knew how much money we needed to pay off some bills with. So, we went down to the bank to withdrawal cash from our savings and deposited it into our checking account.
At least that's what we thought was being done. Come to find out, almost a week alter, that one of the tellers that's been there for some time, didn't put our savings account number on the withdrawal ticket. They put the checking account number and instead, so we ended up withdrawing money we didn't even have in the account to start with.
So, I go to check my checking account balance, and find out it's in the red, instead of having a positive balance, it's negative! I go to speak to the customer service person, and show them where the teller had even called my checking account, my savings account instead, & she was so aloof and uncaring they had even made a mistake in the first place!
Her attitude was more like, well, everyone makes mistakes, though if I had made one, I'd be out of pocket several hundreds of dollars.
The fact is, if I had not caught that they didn't even bother to subtract the amount I wanted out of my savings acct., instead of my checking, I wouldn't have known why my account was so low!
I'm pierre R Antoine. it isn't there a long time since I've the opportunity to open achecking with Suntrust bank. Recently I used made a transaction with my debit card to convenient store on wintergarden, florida. I made a debit purchase of $14.89 on 07/29/2009. Immediatelly I checked my account on line, the transaction was showing debit, two days after the same accnt shown pending. On the following days I received an unsufficient charges for $36.00. In addition an other $36.00 for extended overdraft. I felt very upset for unfair practices. I have those following which could have been paid prior the debit transaction of $14.89, but they pilled them in orther to penalize me for unsufficient fund. More over, in accounting system I never saw this kind of practices. After retrieving all of the information with my debtors, I realised that I had been penalized unfairly, so my account stiil figured a charge of $108.00. As up to day.I denied the $82.00 which is a result of bank unfair practices. I do acknoledged and agreed that extended overdraft fees need to be paid in other to bring the account current. Please let me know wether this issue can be resolve in friendly maner.
Don't ever think of getting a mortgage through them... they have really nice representatives here but their company sucks. I applied for loan modification assistance 4 months ago telling them I needed help and now they have me in foreclosure status and also I am in the process of selling my home to be able to move on with my life and yet they cannot provide me with a payoff amount. I went to the local branch and talked to the branch manager who called them and told me that they would fax me a payoff within 48 hours well 2 days go by and still no payoff amt. I really shouldn't have to bring it out of forclosure to sell it as long as everything is paid in full. The house is apprasied at least $40k more than what is left of the mortgage. It's like a race to who sells the house first. Also I've talked to their forclosure atty. and they have told me that I don't need their permission to sell the house as long as it's paid in full.
I went through my bank originally for the mortgage who then sold it to suntrust right after. Never again I will get another mortgage through this company.
bad customer service
I had to vent this somewhere. How can SunTrust be so bad at what they do?
I had been with SunTrust for more than 7 years, a faithful customer and somewhat biased towards the home team. That all dropped the day I realized I put a "3" instead o f a "4" for the month category under billpay.
SunTrust sent out a check for $980 to my landlord, who cashed it. Since I have a savings account, I don't put a lot of money in my checking, and it was overdrafted. Now, some banks don't cash the check, and you must pay a $35 returned check fee. Not SunTrust. They sent the money out and charged me $35. Ok...
But it doesn't stop there. Though I acceded to their demands and have been getting paperless statements, they figured the best way to contact me about this overdraft was to MAIL me a letter. Four days later, I get a later from SunTrust saying my account is overdrafted. I look online, and see that a check went to my landlord that wasn't supposed to. I go into SunTrust the next day and expain it, and the bank manager says that the excess charges that have racked up since that day ($250) are not their fault, because I put in the date wrong, and so I can't get a refund. I explain to them that is was a simple input error, but the woman was adamant, saying I should be "grateful" that SunTrust took the "courtesy" to pay my incoming charges. I said, LADY! It's not a courtesy when you charge me $35 per transaction, and can't even email me when you're spamming me with junk everyday!
In the end, I switched to BANK OF AMERICA. I don't know, maybe they will suck as well, but I know one thing. There overdraft protection is free, and they provide me alerts when my account goes below a certain amount. To me, those two things are the LEAST SunTrust could do.

refusal to lend
This letter is being written to document the negative impact the financial institutions are having on our current economy. My name is Jeff Schwarz, and I am one of the largest, private commercial landlords in North Carolina. I have been both an incubator of small businesses and partner to large businesses in the market for over 45 years, and, until recently, have had an outstanding relationship with over 70 community banks. It has recently come to my attention that a local financial institution, SunTrust Bank, refused to renew a small commercial loan that they had owned for 5 years. Immediately, I had one of my employees request renewal terms, and received a response from the bank in less than one week: 12 month renewal, 12% interest rate, 1% origination fee to the bank, and all updated third party reports. These terms are a disgrace to any investor, large or small, and the American public should not have to be forced to deal with issues such as these during this economic crisis. Banks can only make money by lending money, and for an institution such as SunTrust Bank to deny credit, or offer terms that may as well be saying no, is absurd.
As an upstanding member of a small North Carolina community, I am not going to sit back and allow these financial institutions to crush the American Dream. I would like your help, as our elected official, to make an example out of this event and help us, the consumers, fight through this economic turmoil. Consumers are giving these banks billions of dollars in TARP funds, and are not getting anything in return. I am outraged, and hope that you are as well.

Mr. Schwarz, sir you are full of crud. If you cared about economic turmoil, you sir would stop your employees from doing illegal lockouts and illegally obtaining personal property from businesses and homes that you house in your J&S Wholesale Warehouse. You sir have caused a lot of the economic turmoil in your community. Maybe one day you wont be able to obtain a loan big enough to buy your way out of the courts once someone gets the guts to stand up to your company. Just, maybe sir, you could help out the economy by investing instead of thieving and using smoking mirrors. One day, the small man will step up and let you have back what you and your employees have stolen from your community. The only reason you haven't been caught is because of the power you posses and one thing that is certain, power is not forever.
terrible bank
Suntrust Bank and I have heard that others do it as well, but I only have actual experience with Suntrust. When an account go nsf, the bank holds electronic transactions and small debits to your account and Processess the largest transactions first. The time span varies with slightly with the posting deadline, ie weekday or weekend, but they post the largest transactions so they can charge you a $35 fee for each of the smaller ones.
Example. I wrote a check for $100 and did not log in in the register. Later that week when the check was posted to the account, I watched as they withdrew 8 minor transactions and processed the check. Then they reprocessed the small transactions, $3.95, $8, 00, $14.75, $22.00, $5.50, $6.69, $10 and $5.79 and charged me $35 each. Count them, They charge me $280 rather than process charge me $35 for the check, which by the way came in last.
I had verified the balance earlier that day to see if I had enough to make a purchase. I decided not to make the purchase because the balance was low. On my electronic statement, the check had not been presented. The following day, I watched as they withdrew my paid debits, posted the check and then paid the electronic debits again and charged me $35 each time. Letters to everyone in the bank here in Atlanta, in Florida and two other cities yielded no positive results.
the first time it happened, it was only one fee. But the second time, I saw the technology in action and closed my account. We are still in dispute about the debt.

This is one area I tend to agree on regarding NSF's - the idea of "largest to smallest" items.
However, there are really only three ways to do it: Large to small, small to large, or random.
People say "order they come in" but in reality, all items for a particular date are "batched" so they don't know what was first if it was a paper item or ACH debit. For check card purchases, yes, but otherwise, no.
They are terrible...simply put. Many other banks do what you are mentioning so I would recommend a Credit Union first! The problem I have with Suntrust is that they treat you like the criminal should your account information be used fraudulently. It takes several days for you to receive a credit to your account after your card has been used fraudulently, and they are not sympathetic. Their process is to make you fax an afidavid to them, then patiently wait 3-5 business days for your money to be credited on a "temporary credit" until their investigation is complete. What kind of multi-million dollar bank does not have the capacity to simply put a temporary credit IMMEDIATELY into your account...remember fraud is NO FAULT OF YOUR OWN! I am officially done doing business with them and my girlfriend is as well. Just wrote a complaint to them via email but they will probably be out of business before anyone gets around to reading it!
Oh my goodness, I glad someone notice that too. I stopped calling to get my balance and started balancing a check book register for my atm transaction. Because they do that to me all the time. Its like the hold transaction until I make a purchase thinking I have the money in the bank. And one of those times it caused my rent check to be reversed. I was short $5.00 in my account. The damage from everything was their fee $35.oo but I had to pay over a hundred dollars to my apartment complex for paying late. As soon as i get my direct deposit changed from my job, i am closing them.

Here's a trick I have used in the past.
After you have written a check, round it up to the next highest dollar and enter that amount in your checkbook. Makes the "match on the go" easier and at tahe end of the month you have a few dollars extra for a movie ticket or a lunch.
