In March of 2012, I was contacted by a company, claiming to sell "Minor Medical Insurance". This was after I requested insurance quotes online. They were selling Multiplan Health Insurance, offered through the Affiliated Workers Association. They claimed that Freedom Life was the underwriting insurance company. After several Dr.'s visits I began receiving past due medical bills. At first I was thinking that the bills were sent to me before the Freedom Life paid them. This week I received another past due bill, and a statement from Freedom Life. The statement from Freedom Life read " Physician's Visits to an Outpatient Hospital Facility or Emergency Room are not covered." No one on my plan has visited either of these places for care. Clearly it had to be some mistake But when I called Freedom Life's claims department I was informed that not only had that claim been denied, but each one of my claims had been denied. This goes back nearly a year! After speaking to everyone in the company, Homeland, and Compass (some of their other entities) they still will not pay up. I have given them over $$$$ and have only received a discount for using an "In network provider". This is only about a 5-10% discount. I figure if I start here I can get information on what my next step should be. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. Here is the feedback between the Compass representative and myself: I hope you are having a wonderful day so far. We have reviewed all of your bills. A summary of our findings is below:

Bill

Make Payment To

Payment Responsibility:
$87
XXXXXX
11/09/12
Total Charge: $75

Payment Responsibility:
$60
This claim is correct and was processed appropriately by Freedom Life. The PPO discounted amount was $15 since the provider is participating with the MultiPlan network. There was no benefit applied as you do not have benefits for Physician Visits at an Outpatient Hospital. We confirmed with Kelly at Freedom Life that this charge was billed as a Physician Visit at an Outpatient Hospital. Kelly also confirmed that the claims from April and May from this provider had the benefits applied the same way.

Please make payment to provider.
As we have only received your Explanation of Benefits, please refer to your bill for payment information. The above payment responsibilities do not include any payments you’ve already made to the provider or any changes that the provider may have made to your account. Kelly at Freedom Life confirmed that should you cancel your policy, that you can still have old claims reprocessed if they are incorrect. Please let me know if you have any questions or if we can assist further.

My Response to this, please note that they have scammed me:
Hello,
I have attempted to speak with billing at the XXXXX where my family and I have been seen. I will let you know what I find out, because you had not spoken with them. I was under the impression that you would speak to the XXXXXX on my behalf. You have only spoken with the SCAMMERS. Those were all REGULAR MD VISITS, and not OUTPATIENT or ER visits. I feel as though this was some type of SCAM and I will be contacting the BBB. Also if you could, please send me the number to the corporate headquarters. If you don't have it just let me know which number I should call. Thanks for talking to the same SCAMMING claims dept. that I had already spoken too. In other words thanks for nothing! I'm pretty sure you only followed protocol. It's absolutely sad that I was taken advantaged of for just under a year. Here I was thinking I was protecting my family and myself, but that was not the case. I should have researched more, that is my own fault. I can just bet the $$$ that I have put into this "Minor Medical" SCAM that this happens all of the time. To think I paid out ALL of that money for a $15 discount on bills that range from $60 and up. Who in their right mind would pay $XXX a month for a $15 discount! I am definitely going to speak with my lawyer about seeking legal action, for compensation. While I am at it I will be sure to find out how many others have been scammed. Maybe a class action lawsuit will be in order. My lawyer may be contacting you soon.
Hope you have a great day Michelle.

Ok here it goes... If you allowed yourself to be sold/scammed by some young 20 year old girl or guy over the phone into purchasing some DISCOUNT plan over the phone than this is your fault. Don't try to pass the blame onto anyone else. This is the 21st century.. unless you are talking to blue cross blue shield, CIGNA, AETNA, COVENTRY or a major medical licensed representative I have no idea why you would give your credit card over the phone. First of all you shouldn't have even put your correct phone number on the application, because once you do that they will blow your phone up like vultures. These people are just doing their job and reading a script to you, which in turn you allowed yourself to believe something that is obviously too good to be true. Insurance theeeessee days must have a deductible, co insurance and a lifetime cap. The plans that have 0 deductibles are obviously a scam.. Or they will tell you that these policies are under group enrollment and are under a limited availability to make you bite quicker. Your mistake. DONT GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD TO A RANDOM PERSON OVER THE PHONE UNLESS YOU KNOW IT'S A SECURE LINE/BUSINESS.

Beware a salesman named Kasich did not state there is a 30 day waiting period after I asked I could start using the next day and the next day I called the 800 number and asked if I can start using and she said yes and said nothing about the 30 day waiting period and know I have lots of bills.

I was sold this insurance by a family member, not a random person over the phone. She chalked it up to be the best insurance ever! So, trusting her, I took it. Needless to say, I updated to the "emergency plan" right before I had a baby. I was told that all you had to do, was meet your $950 dollar deductible and everything after that is paid at 100% and also that the baby would be covered at 100% as well for the first 48hrs as long as you pre-registered(which I did). . Boy was I wrong! Come to find out...the insurance doesn't cover "private" delivery rooms, only semi-private. So I was charged with the room bill. Does anyone have semi-private labor rooms?! I was also charged with the baby's stay. When calling Freedom Life to question the charges, I was told at least 5 answers when calling about the same problem. First the baby was covered, then he has a $950 deductible, then he has a $2800 deductible, then he wasn't in the Cigna network(but I was...doesn't make sense). I am still receiving bills from January for who knows what. This has been the worst experience I've ever had with insurance(or whatever you call this). Needless to say, that family member still works for them, and even gets sent of trips for screwing people out of lots of money!

These people don't sound like some that would sit down and go thru the policy to see what the limitations are. Every policy has its boundaries. The thing is to be prepared for the emergency and know what steps to take so you don't have these huge bills. I think these people are few not the many. This company has been in business for 60years. They have a great BBB rating. I call bull crap on these stories!

I was given the same tale on how this insurance plan would cover for any service to either primary care providers or specialists after I explained that I had medical issues and that I was currently being seen by specialist more so then my primary provider. I was assured that I would not have to pay not more then an office visit to either providers specialties regardless. The agent mentioned that it was a discount PPO multiple insurance and because I had pre-existing medical problems this would be the best for me. Come to find out that the plan has not paid nothing on any part of my medical visits and that the billing from the providers have only been discounted and I am responsible for what is after the discount thru this insurance. I am extremely upset for this whole deal. I currently have a appeal review at hand, still waiting on it. Its been if not close to a month since I called to dispute a $4000.00 bill from the specialist office. And the EOB (explanation of benefits) came much later from Freedom Life Insurance Company of America

I went through the same thing. I asked 100's of questions and went through every scenario I could think of to make sure all was covered. I went to in network doctor. I WAS TOLD I HAD NO DEDUCTABLE NO COPAY AND NO CO INSURANCE. Such a crock! The never paid out 1 penny. I to am filing complaints as this ruined my credit and financial almost ruined me.

Has anyone filed a class action law suit? I am going through this right now. I was lied to about coverage. I also asked 100 questions, I have kids who need there shots and well child check ups, so I asked to make sure that those were covered. Got my first "explanation of benefits" NONE of it was covered they gave me a 10% discount for using an in service provider. So now after paying almost $400 a month for insurance I have an almost $500 doctors bill for things I was told would be covered.

I was contacted by Jay trying to push this coverage. When I told him I would like to research the company/coverage he transferred me to another Jay who was the worst version of a used car salesman you can imagine. When I finally got him to understand that I was going to research the information he provided - 100% coverage in ER, doctor's visits, dental and vision, small copay for specialists, 0 deductible - he said obvious this policy was not a fit for me and hung up on me! Please question these options, research BEFORE you buy. They won't take your money - they won't even wait for your to research - they are a SCAM - STAY AWAY!

This company is a complete scam. Please do your due diligence and research any company well before you give them any personal or financial information. Any reputable company will give you plenty of time to research and will not try to strong hold you using a" limited time" offer.

I have had coverage with this company for 2 years now and honestly i have no complaints. I strongly believe that if you fully understand what the hell you are buying you shouldnt be let down when something isnt covered or you have to come out of pocket something. My doctors in Tampa all take the network and ive gotten discounted from the network and then the insurance company paid the rest. only thing i paid for last year was my prostate check up bc they did tell me that my wellness isnt covered. Ive looked up Aetna, Humana, etc and its the same types of review from people who claim the company ripped them off but in reality they are just usin it wrong and expect to have a smooth ride... and yes i am one of those people that will sit and review if i had a good/bad experience with a company and ive no issues when i had Aetna and the same now with Freedom Life
